The rāhui is a ceremonial closure of an area, making entry into the area tapu or forbidden according to Māori custom. The area is home to hundreds of kauri trees, many of which are infected with the contagious dieback disease. Between 1095 and 1911, Mt Matavanu erupted on Samoa's island of Savai'i sending lava flowing northwards, burying five villages. On a high hill, overlooking the capital of Samoa, Apia, lies on of the Pacific nations most famous import, Robert Louis Stevenson. Tusi Tala, as he was known in Samoa, was the author of Treasure Island and died after living in Samoa for only four years. Part of a news shooters job is improvisation - spur of the moment solving of problems you didn't know you had. Here it was shooting the Modern Māori Quartet - so I just asked them how long I had (not long, they were in the middle of writing a song); is there a room we could shoot in (nope) so it was out into the garden with an off camera flash. They had no issues hamming it up on request (media pros!) with spades and tomato stakes - boom!
