Toni Morrison’s Most Memorable Quotes
Tumblr media
Toni Morrison was a Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who left behind a powerful literary legacy. Here are a few of her most memorable comments on language, creativity and identity.
“A writer’s life and work are not a gift to mankind; they are its necessity.” (“The Source of Self -Regard,” 2019)
“We don’t need any more writers as solitary heroes. We need a heroic writers’ movement: assertive, militant, pugnacious.” (“What Moves at the Margin: Selected Nonfiction,” 2008)
“I thought of myself as like the jazz musician — someone who practices and practices and practices in order to be able to invent and to make his art look effortless and graceful. I was always conscious of the constructed aspect of the writing process, and that art appears natural and elegant only as a result of constant practice and awareness of its formal structures. You must practice thrift in order to achieve that luxurious quality of wastefulness — that sense that you have enough to waste, that you are holding back — without actually wasting anything.” (“Toni Morrison, The Art of Fiction,” in The Paris Review, 1993)
Tumblr media
“Language alone protects us from the scariness of things with no names. Language alone is meditation.” (Toni Morrison’s Nobel lecture, 1993)
“The very serious function of racism … is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and so you spend 20 years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says that you have no art so you dredge that up. Somebody says that you have no kingdoms and so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary.” (“A Humanist View,” a 1975 speech Morrison gave at Portland State University)
“I never asked Tolstoy to write for me, a little colored girl in Lorain, Ohio. I never asked Joyce not to mention Catholicism or the world of Dublin. Never. And I don’t know why I should be asked to explain your life to you.” (“Conversations With Toni Morrison,” 1994)
“We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” (Nobel lecture, 1993)
Tumblr media
“What I’m interested in is writing without the gaze, without the white gaze. … In so many earlier books by African-American writers, particularly the men, I felt that they were not writing to me. But what interested me was the African-American experience throughout whichever time I spoke of. It was always about African-American culture and people — good, bad, indifferent, whatever — but that was, for me, the universe.” (From Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah’s 2015 profile of Morrison in The New York Times Magazine)
“Freeing yourself was one thing. Claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” (“Beloved,” 1987)
“If you surrendered to the air, you could ride it.” (“Song of Solomon,” 1977)
“He has double eyes. Each one a different color. A sad one that lets you look inside him, and a clear one that looks inside you.” (“Jazz,” 1992)
“Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined.” (“Beloved,” 1987)

Inspirational Quotes About Life And Its Struggles
Tumblr media
Struggling is an unavoidable part of life if you want to achieve anything great, but it all comes down to your approach on managing it and having the right perspective. Here are some quotes which share how life can be beautiful regardless of the struggles you are facing.
#1: Struggling is not the identity. You must learn to live while you struggle, such that anyone who sees you can separate the struggle from your life.
#2: Don’t be stuck on the struggle that you refuse to be a part of life, there’s so many people waiting on you to show them that they deserve to live, so breathe a bit and live life even in the struggles.
#3: Struggles are a part of life but they are not the totality of what life entails so we must remember to discover all the other ingredients that make life worth living.
Tumblr media
#4: Those who struggle do it because they want to live so it’s only injustice if you struggle so much and pass up on opportunities to live life.
#5: Struggles like life will not last forever, so you have to choose which you’ll devote your attention to.
#6: As much as this will not be easy, it’s better to choose life even through the struggles.
#7: It’s so beautiful when you get the rewards for struggles and a chance to enjoy the life you are making so much sacrifices to get.
Tumblr media
#8: Struggles are just as addictive as life so when you find yourself on that balance scale tilting towards one than the other, you’ll feel the withdrawal symptoms like you’ve been getting too little of one.
#9: Maturity does not come with growth, it’s most times a function of perfecting that balance between struggles and life and learning to be yourself regardless of what life throws at you.
#10: Without the struggles we face in life, we might be unable to tap into our deep crucibles of creativity and produce all the art that makes the world this beautiful place it is.

Tumblr media
Spring is around the corner which means spending more time outside. Here are some beautiful quotes to help you look forward to the pending season.
Hummed of mystery
“Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.” —Cormac McCarthy
Her secret
“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
Silence to touch souls
“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature—trees, flowers, grass—grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…We need silence to be able to touch souls.” —Mother Teresa
Tumblr media
Beauty everywhere
“If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” —Vincent van Gogh
In praise of a walk
“An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” —Henry David Thoreau

Useful tips for being at your best for that key interview
Tumblr media
Humans can be quite contradictory creatures sometime. We can often get stuck in a rut and be determined to pull ourselves out of it, but at the same time be fearful of taking a huge step towards something life-changing.
Switching jobs, or even starting off on a new career path is a big move and often the key to opening that new door is selling yourself in an interview. This is where many people fall done because, as qualified and capable as they are, selling themselves just doesn’t come as naturally to some as others.
Tumblr media
But a job or college interview is about much more than just selling yourself. One of the tricks is to see an interview as more of a conversation – albeit with a panel of total strangers – than an interrogation.
If you are not naturally outgoing, there are number of things you do to make sure you do your best at an interview and make lasting impression at an interview – and this starts from before you even walk in the door.
Before the interview, do some light stretching and breathing exercises to help calm your nerves and make you feel comfortable.
Tumblr media
When you get into the room, it is important the you shake hands with each member of the panel and tell them ‘Nice to meet you’ and repeat their name. Remember each name is crucial as it reflects your ability to remember key facts and also adds a personal touch when you are responding to their questions.
When talking about yourself, avoid rhyming off a list of achievements. Instead, tell a story about your experiences. That will be much more personal and memorable.

Three tips on how to beat writer’s block
Tumblr media
For writers, the first word is often the most difficult. Anyone who writes regularly will know that, once you’re in a flow, you can be unstoppable. However, with many things in life, the old saying that ‘a good start is half the work’ is particularly apt for writers.
However, thinking of the hook or opening line to get things going can be difficult and getting over that roadblock can seem almost impossible some days. So, if you are suffering from the dreaded writer’s block, here a few tips to get over it.
Tumblr media
1. Go walking. It’s amazing how many times this is the solution to a problem, but going for a walk has many advantages for writers. First, it clears your head which allows ideas to pop into it organically without you have to force them. Also, the physical activity is also good for your brain and can stimulate activity, and therefore creativity.
2. Get into a routine. It may seem obvious, but if you create a routine for your writing, you may find that your brain will click in at the same time each day too. A routine is also more about what you don’t do as what you do. If you know you are going to writing at certain time, you can spend the rest of the time on the other distractions which normally contribute to your writer’s block.
Tumblr media
3. Brainstorm on a blank sheet. Get a piece of paper and write down any word that comes into your head, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. Don’t force it, allow the words to come naturally and you might discover a thought you didn’t know you had.

How to keep motivated in winter
Tumblr media
In the winter time, the majority of us love to spend our time cozied up indoors and generally have less motivation than in the summer months. When it’s dark outside, it’s harder to get out of bed, work hard and have that push to reach our goals. However, if you have that lack of motivation, we have a few ways to help you out.
Get a good night's sleep - Without a doubt, sleep is the one thing that can help you through the winter months and keep you motivated. A regular pattern of 7-8 hours sleep per night will give you that boost in the day to get going at work and prevent you from slacking half-way through.
Tumblr media
Switch off in the evening - To get that good night's sleep, it’s important to switch off when the evening time hits. This means forgetting everything to do with work and focusing on yourself. You could unwind with a movie, have a lovely long bath or start a new book. Choose whatever it is to make you feel fully relaxed.
Eat well - Eating well is a great step to motivation. The right foods will aid your body and mind and boost your mood more. We’re talking anything healthy, that releases endorphins and gets your energy going. Eating more energized foods will get the ball rolling for you to work hard and boost motivation more.
Tumblr media
Treat yourself - In the same breath, don’t forget about the indulgences in the winter months. This could be all the festive treats, a glass of wine or a day out. Working towards a treat will motivate you more.

How to be more body confident
Tumblr media
Body confidence is a struggle a lot of us go through regardless of gender. As human beings, we naturally always compare ourselves to other people and especially celebrities. Social media today is huge on appearance, how we should look and getting the perfect Instagram shot. However, we all need to remember it’s not real and we should love who we are. Here are a few ways to grow your body confidence.
Tumblr media
Wear what you’re comfortable in - We all have parts of our bodies that we aren’t the biggest fan of and the first step to being body confidence is accepting them. Do this by wearing the clothes you’re comfortable in that don’t necessarily show those bits off. Once you are comfortable, you can then be a bit more brave with your fashion choices.
Compliment yourself - The most important thing when it comes to body confidence is boosting yourself up. Your friends and family can tell you a million times that you’re pretty, however, it needs to come from you to believe it. Every day, start the morning off with a compliment as it’ll boost you and your confidence.
Tumblr media
Step out your comfort zone - As you grow with body confidence, you can begin to take fashion risks and wear things you’re not necessarily used to. Over time, keep stepping out of your fashion comfort zone and before you know it, you’ll be able to rock whatever you want. Always remember that everyone is beautiful in their own way.
