@/welovemonstergirls asked: Can I see hcs for Whitney, Candice, Hilda, Sabrina, Elesa and Skyla with an adopted child that was previously abused? The child is quiet, shy and fearful and is prone to crying and nightmares.
Franchise: Pokémon
Genre: General headcanons; angst; hurt to comfort; familial
Trigger warnings: PTSD mention
A/n: Ah, my first angsty ask. Poor little thing, I'll make sure these girls take good care of them, don't you worry!
❀ Sabrina
Sabrina hasn't been around kids since she herself was one; the only time she interacts with them is if a gym challenger just happens to be a kid. So to say that she's inexperienced with children is an understatement. But she's a kind woman with a big heart, and has absolutely zero tolerance for child abuse (well, game Sabrina anyways). Seeing the awful state that the child was in, she took them under her wing immediately and vowed to give them a second chance at living a happy life.
Despite her cold and aloof exterior, Sabrina is actually pretty laid back and chill. She won't be particularly strict or overprotective, but she won't just throw the child to the wolves either. As soon as the adjustment period is over, she'd gift them an Eevee and task them with evolving it into an Espeon, though that's not to say she'd be disappointed if it accidentally evolves into an Umbreon or Sylveon, she'd just be proud to see her child's growth as a trainer and person. Having a partner Pokémon that's a psychic type would not only serve as a protector, but if the child has a panic attack, the Pokémon's psychic abilities could help calm them down.
Speaking of which, panic attacks and nightmares become a non issue. With Sabrina and her Pokémon's psychic abilities, the child could be hypnotized into falling peacefully asleep or winding down from a PTSD episode. She'd be careful not to overuse them, as she knows that she can't always be there to help the child, so she would research and teach them some healthy coping mechanisms which range from the more normal tricks like taking 10 deep breaths or squeezing a stress ball, to more outlandish things like biting into a lemon. Not particularly elegant, but if it works, it works.
Sabrina would love doing activities with the child. Once she reached adulthood, she realized just how much she genuinely enjoys spending time with other people, and her favorite person to be with, of course, would be her own child. She'd like to read to them before bed, do puzzles with them, bake with them, or just sit together while they each did their own thing.
There's a chance that being around Sabrina and her Pokémon constantly would lead to the child developing their own psychic powers. In that case, Sabrina would be an excellent teacher. Whether it be teaching them to have a better grip on their telekinesis, clearer telepathic communication skills, or making sense of their visions, Sabrina would be there to guide them every step of the way.
*•.¸❀
❀ Whitney
Whitney is... Well, a bit of a mess. I can see her being a great babysitter or older sister figure, but being a child's primary caregiver? Let's just say not a lot of "parenting" will be happening. Whitney is spontaneous and energetic, and that's reflected in the way she takes care of her child. She takes the child with her everywhere, and I mean everywhere. To the gym, the baseball field, the mall, the beach, to run errands, to hang out with friends. Whitney loves them to the moon and back, but she'd end up treating them more like an accessory than a human at times.
Whitney would make absolute certain that the child will always look and feel their very best. Lots of cute clothes and accessories, the best skin and hair care products on the market, and a lifetime membership to whatever the Pokémon equivalent of the YMCA is. Of course, all of those burnt calories are nullified by the amount of sweets Whitney shoves down their throat. She likes to spoil and be spoiled. What can she say?
Whitney is prone to crying and, well, tantrums. She's a very emotional person in general, so if the child is upset and crying, she ends up crying too. Whitney tries to keep herself together for their sake, she really does, but seeing her little angel break down tears her heart to pieces. She'll panic, which sometimes makes things worse, but she'll do absolutely whatever she physically can to calm them (both) down and make them happy again. In the end, Whitney figures out a routine and is able to calm them down quicker whilst also keeping her cool. Maybe she's not so bad at this whole parent thing after all.
Very protective of them. They're her little baby, why wouldn't she be? If Whitney spots anyone being mean to her kid, cute little immature Whitney vanishes and she goes full mama bear. And if God forbid a person or Pokémon tries to physically threaten them? They get a taste of Miltank's most powerful Rollout. She can come across at times like a helicopter parent. It's not that she doesn't trust the child, it's that she's genuinely interested in their life and wants to be able to connect with them. Friends, hobbies, likes and dislikes, she wants to know it all. Helps with picking out birthday gifts, too!
*•.¸❀
❀ Candice
10/10 soccer mom. Probably the most experienced (and most normal) caregiver on this list, though Skyla would be a close second. Anyway, Candice takes her role as a parent very seriously. She'd buy several books on parenting and even take a few parenting classes. She wants her child to have the best life they possibly can.
Candice wants her child to live and grow from their experiences. She's not the type to throw them out of the nest and leave them to their own devices, of course, but she'd try to teach them independence to the best of her abilities. This is a little easier said than done at the start considering the child's background, but Candice is willing to put in the work to help them thrive.
Snow hikes, ice skating, sledding, Candice would make sure that the child stays active and healthy. She'd make sure they were the only ones around if the child was too anxious to be around other people. Afterwards, she'd treat them to a nice big mug of hot cocoa.
I can see her homeschooling the child for the first year or two after the adoption, to help them adjust before throwing them into another unfamiliar situation. You'd think that she'd be running short on time thanks to her juggling her job as a gym leader, her social life, hobbies and now a child, but somehow she manages. Candice is pretty intelligent, so educating the child wouldn't be too big of a challenge. Additionally, she'd enroll them in any extracurricular activity they show interest in so they'd get some social interaction, though she'd try to find groups that were a bit on the smaller side at first to avoid them becoming stressed out.
Walkie-talkies would be kept on Candice's and the child's nightstands in case they're woken up from nightmares or have an anxiety attack and need comfort. Candice can wake up in an instant, so it's no bother to her. She'll stay up as long as they need, talking to them, listening to them ramble, or telling them stories. She wants them to know that they can rely on her, and that she'd never find them annoying or a burden.
*•.¸❀
❀ Elesa
Elesa has virtually zero experience with children, but not because she dislikes them. She likes kids, thinks they're fun. I picture her as somewhat of a vodka aunt. Always showering her child with gifts and trying to prioritize being cool and fun so they don't find her annoying.
To expand on that last part, Elesa is rich, that goes without saying. She could afford practically anything the kid wanted. They want these specific snacks from Johto? Elesa will buy them a month's supply. They're too anxious to play outside with the other kids? Elesa hired the best architects in the region to build them an indoor jungle gym. Not to mention that she made sure to hire a great therapist to help the child through their trauma.
Unfortunately due to both of Elesa's jobs being extremely demanding and time consuming, she's rarely ever home. She hates this knowing how upset the child gets when she's not around. To at least attempt to remedy this, once she's on break she will immediately start a video call with them to check in. She would also make sure they were surrounded with stuff to keep them busy, whether it be toys, games, books, movies or Pokémon to keep them company.
Elesa doesn't mind being woken up in the middle of the night from nightmares, as she's used to functioning on little sleep anyway. She'll invite them into her bed with her and lay their head on her chest, ask them to tell her about their nightmare as she gently runs her fingers through their hair to calm them down. Being a model is a stressful job, with having to deal with everyone's expectations of her to be perfect, so she understands stress and anxiety. If the child is too nervous to sleep alone, Elesa will wrap them in the softest blanket she has and let them cling to her arm for the rest of the night.
Elesa is very gentle and patient with them, especially at first, but she isn't going to let the child continue to live in fear for the rest of their life. She won't push them beyond their limits, but in the rare moments when she has some time to spare, she'll take them out on walks or to visit the amusement park. The world is so beautiful and has so much to offer, and she wants her child to be able to experience all of the wonder and good the world has to offer. Like previously mentioned, Elesa hired a therapist for them, and is also willing to do everything she can to help them heal.
*•.¸❀
❀ Skyla
Second best parent on the list. Incredibly bright and optimistic, Skyla can rather effortlessly turn anyone's negative mood into a positive one. Though the child's case is a little more than a "bad mood," Skyla is patient enough to take any issue that arises head on and with the utmost care. She's always liked kids, always treated them with kindness and respect, never talking down to them or belittling them because of their age. Children are humans too, just because they're young and still learning does not mean that they are stupid or that their feelings don't matter, Skyla believes this wholeheartedly.
The child is on a set schedule that prioritizes both health and fun. Early mornings with breakfasts that contain lots of fruit, then afterwards a morning ride in Skyla's airplane. Most of their time during the day is spent either outside or in the gym. Fresh air is good for the mind and body, and so is being around Pokémon! That's what Skyla thinks at least. Of course, if it all gets too overwhelming, Skyla will take the child to the gym's break room for a little recuperation. In the evening, the child is free to do whatever they please - within reason, of course. Skyla always makes sure to be nearby in case she's needed, but learning some independence early on never hurts.
Skyla spends a lot of time with her friends. She's a social butterfly, and maintaining her friendships is very important to her. She wants the child to have that kind of experience as well, so she'd encourage them to join clubs or attend camps. Sometimes, she'd bring them along on shopping dates with Elesa and Caitlin, who were both completely on board with taking the child to as many clothing stores as possible to play dress up. Not only does the child have a caring mother, but two aunts who love to spoil them.
Also gets the child in therapy immediately. Skyla's smart, but she's no professional when it comes to children's mental health, and she knows this. She wants her baby to be healthy and happy, after all. Whenever they have a panic attack, Skyla makes sure to remain as calm as possible, and carefully walk them through it. Do they need water? Do they need to go somewhere quieter? Do they want a hug? No matter how they respond, Skyla stays gentle with them. It's not their fault that they feel this way, or that the adults around them failed them. Skyla's heart aches for the poor thing, and she'll do whatever she can to help them recover from their trauma.
*•.¸❀
❀ Hilda
I wouldn't exactly call Hilda "motherly," but I'd say that "sisterly" would be an apt description. She's... well, a bit of a meathead. Her fiery personality can leave people a little winded after meeting her, especially if they aren't as passionate about battling as she is. Despite how seemingly one track minded she is, I firmly believe that she would take on the role of a caretaker instantly if a child needed her help. She'd just be a little clumsy at first, but thankfully, she has friends like Hilbert, N (who would also be a bit clueless, but would try his best to help), Bianca and Cheren, ESPECIALLY Cheren.
As soon as they were old enough, Hilda would take them to Professor Juniper (or Bianca) to receive their partner Pokémon. As I said, Hilda is very passionate about battling, and would want to share her interests with the child. Even if they're not particularly interested in it, a Pokémon would still be able to protect them if the need arises.
Every weekend, Hilda would take them out to get Casteliacones. I mean, who doesn't like ice cream? It would be a good way to bond, while also gently reintroducing them to public spaces. If they were too shy and nervous to order themselves, Hilda would have no issue ordering for them. She hoped that her confidence would one day rub off on them, but until then, she didn't mind if they hid behind her. She promised to protect them no matter what, and she never goes back on her word.
I'm not gonna lie, I don't think Hilda would even notice the nightmares at first. Girl sleeps like a ROCK. She would one morning notice how groggy and sickly the child looked and would ask what was wrong. When they tell her that they had a nightmare and weren't able to wake her up, she'd feel terrible. After that, she'd ask every night if they wanted one of her Pokémon to snuggle with. Emboar was big, but very warm, Ursaring was also huge, but its fur was soft and you could also count on it to keep you safe, and Musharna would be able to keep the nightmares at bay.
Hilda wouldn't know how to respond to the anxiety attacks at first. Her knee-jerk reaction would be to hug them, but was later told by Cheren that that could make it worse by making them feel suffocated. Instead, she opted for sitting down next to them, letting them cry it out, and quietly telling them that everything was going to be okay, that she would always stay by their side. It's one of those rare moments where Hilda is softer and quieter. She loves this kid so much, and all she wants is to help them feel better. Normally she would rush into things without a second thought, but this isn't the sort of thing you can speedrun, and she knows that. This time, she'll be patient.

Pokemon Characters and Date Ideas
Basically: what dates would these Pokemon characters do with you? Characters: N Harmonia, Leon, Grimsley, Rika & Prof. Augustine Sycamore
N Harmonia
Was honestly showing affection and did private, one-on-one hangouts together even before you two started dating
It was around this time he got more affectionate in your friendship. Resting his head on top of your hair, deep eye contact (which he was often really bad at), and braiding/playing with your hair or vice versa.
It wasn’t until you “officially” ask him out and he cocks his head to the side like a confused puppy and goes “I thought we already were?”
Confusion ensues.
As for dates, N is a really quiet and private guy. He doesn’t like being out in public or in overstimulating environments.
Most of the time dates are hikes, picnics, exploring, all that the fun outdoorsy stuff where he gets to shine in his element.
Occasionally y’all go to Nimbasa City and go on the Ferris Wheel or play at the arcade in the Amusement Park which you both find enjoyable.
But his favorites are on late nights when neither of you can sleep.
You two will just go to Dragonspiral Tower and stargaze at the top of the ruins or watch the local wild pokemon do their thing.
It’s quiet, it’s fun, and he’s with you. What else could he ask for?
Leon
Dense boy, you probably had to beat him over the head with a book to get his brain to understand (mostly bc he keeps accidentally friend-zoning himself)
Has never really dated before?
Like, Rose set him up on dates because it's good publicity but he probably hasn’t gone on a real date.
He has money, all these brand partnerships and stuff. He tries to do really classy stuff when y’all first start dating but it leads to him being clearly uncomfortable and you getting fed up and explaining you like him for him and to do fun stuff together.
Mostly home dates from that point on or outings that don’t feel like “dates”.
Game nights where you two play video games are super fun. Some days are challenge days where you see who can do the best run on a Roguelike or who can win the most rounds of a battle royale type game
Some days are cozy co-op games where you solve puzzles and create things…
Y’all’s favorite thing to do together though is just walk and get lost. Esp with Leon’s terrible sense of direction, you two find weird hole-in-the-wall places that are so much fun.
The best one you found was a great hole-in-the-wall traditional kantonian ramen bar that was on the edge of going out of business. However, due to you and Leon talking about it so much with friends and posting about it online, you saved the shop from going out of business.
Grimsley
Your first date with Grimsley wasn’t really what you were expecting in all honesty
He took you out for lunch at his favorite Kalosian cafe then took you to a bookstore and had you both pick out different books for each other, then went to his house and read while old records played in the background
Of course, the book he picked out for you was one of Shauntal’s (because gotta support your friends/little sister figure)
It was so different from what you were expecting but so sweet at the same time.
Most common dates are drinks at bars after long days or flower viewings knowing you would like them
He also takes you to his favorite spots whenever he visits Alola with you.
But the most fun dates are when the two of you go to Castelia or Nimbasa to the casinos
You both are given the same amount of money and the challenge is who makes the most in time for your dinner reservation
Whenever the two of you see each other during these you have a habit of teasing the other about who’s in the lead.
In the end, the winner pays for dinner (much to the chagrin of the other)
Rika
She’s the one who asked you and was super casual and blunt about it
Picks you up after work and takes you to the store where the two of you talk about what to make for dinner.
The two of you go back to her place and begin cooking together, smiling and chatting the whole time as the two of you get distracted by cutting veggies and being in each other’s company.
From then on dates were mostly cutesy, one-on-one time for the two of you.
Crafts while watching movies are the most common, sewing, embroidery, sketching, it's just fun and relaxing
Ceramics classes too, wet clay on your hands and you rub it on her face. Only for her to cock her brow and smirk as she cups her face with her filthy hands and kisses your nose.
Her favorite dates are the ones when you get to help her at the Academy. Running after-school activities or working in the library
It combines her admiration of her students and her love of you… her two favorite things
Prof. Augustine Sycamore
Honestly over the moon when you accepted to go on a date with him
The man is in his late 30s/early 40s and his last relationship kinda fell apart really badly
*cough cough Lysandre cough*
So he was out of the dating scene for a while and didn’t exactly know what to do when you said yes
Like, his brain crashed and did a hard reset. He was not expecting to get this far…
He gives all his employees off one day and decks out the backyard of his lab with string lights, and sheets, rummaging around the attic of the lab, and a call to his favorite restaurant.
When you arrived you saw the backyard completely transformed into a cozy outdoor movie spot with takeout and snacks prepared at a picnic table
It’s super sweet
Besides that, you two go on “research” dates together. It’s mostly pokemon watching and taking notes on what you find.
The little sketches he does of the pokemon you find absolutely adorable!

@/welovemonstergirls asked: Scenario request: Candice is on an ice skating date with her s/o and ends up crashing into a snowbank, getting buried with her upper body and legs trapped, leaving only her butt sticking out. She decides to take this opportunity to tease and fluster her s/o as much as possible.
Franchise: Pokémon
Characters: Candice
Genre: One-shot; fluff; light spice; gn reader
Trigger warnings: None
A/n: I'm so happy to see some Sinnoh requests! Modern Pokémon is nice and all, but the older characters deserve some love, too.
You were no stranger to ice skating. When dating Candice, any activity relating to ice and snow was a common occurrence, and after dating her for a few years at this point, you were quite skilled. Able to do twists and turns, to hold Candice's hand above her head and twirl her out, then back in, and races with her would normally end in a tie. Neither of you were pros, but you were long past the era of you crashing on top of her (much to her dismay, not that she would ever admit it) or flying out of the rink and into a snow bank. Well, you were at least. Candice, on the other hand...
Hand in hand, the two of you gracefully glided around the frozen pond. Every so often, you leaned over to whisper sweet nothings into her ear, or plant a kiss on her cheek, which never failed to make her blush and giggle.
"Hey, I've been learning a new move recently." Candice said, suddenly letting go of your hand.
"Oh? What is it?" You asked.
Candice pointed over to a bench by the bank. "Sit! I'll put on a grand show for you!" With a light laugh, you obeyed and sat down, hands folded neatly over your lap, giving her your full attention.
With a pleased smile on her face, Candice skated to the center of the pond, and got into position. She took a deep breath, and using one foot to push herself to gain momentum, she dashed forward. After picking up enough speed, she leapt into the air and quickly spun around, moving so quickly that she looked like nothing but a blur of blue and white. She landed with only a small stumble, and, upon realizing her success, completely turned her attention to you.
"That was amazing!" You praised her while clapping gleefully. But your excitement turned to worry as you saw her unknowingly glide towards the edge of the pond... Where there lay a giant snow bank. "Wait, Candice- Look out!" But it was too late. She was at the point of no return when she snapped her head back to check where she was headed...
...and she was flung directly into the snow, with nothing but her backside sticking out. An unfortunate position indeed.
You rushed over to the snow bank and got to work digging her out. "Can you hear me? Are you alright?" You paused, however, when you heard a muffled giggle.
"Oh, I'm fine~" Candice replied.
You tilted your head to the side, a bit confused at her calm response. You figured she'd be a bit miffed at least, but she seemed perfectly fine, more so than that, she seemed to be enjoying herself. Whatever the case, you resumed digging, and removed enough snow that her waist was now free. The snow was soft, so you figured you could just pull her out at this point.
"I'm gonna pull you out, so try not to move, okay?" You wrapped your arms around her waist, unbeknownst to you, causing her to blush and grin mischievously from ear to ear.
"Y/n, don't be so rough~" she cooed. "Your hands feel so warm after all this cold."
"O-oh, uh, sorry." Why were you feeling so hot all of a sudden? You shook your head to regain your focus, and after you positioned yourself directly behind her - with her ass pressed against your abdomen, no less - you firmly but gently pulled her out, and she fell back against you, making sure your bodies were still flush together.
"You saved me!" Candice teased. "My knight in shining armor~" Candice turned her head to you and kissed you sweetly on the lips.
"Y-yeah, no problem." You said, bashfully. "Are you hurt? That really didn't look comfortable."
Candice giggled. "Of course I'm fine! But what about you?"
"Huh? What about me?" You asked, clearly confused.
"Your face is all red, silly! What, did you enjoy the view that much?"
Your eyes widened like dinner plates and your blush grew even redder. "No! I mean- well, I was just... Just worried, is all." You tried to stammer out an excuse, but Candice wasn't buying it at all. She only playfully rolled her eyes, and, to make your poor little heart beat even faster, she coyly slid your hands down her waist until they were resting on her hips, just mere inches away from her ass.
"Mmm, well, if you say so. But I am pretty tired after all of that." Candice slipped out of your embrace, leaving your arms and hands feeling cold and empty, and turned around towards you to boop your nose. "Let's head home. I could really use some help warming up~"

Little hc I just thought of
Poppy refuses to hold Rika's hand because hers is always cold. She won't hold Hassel's hand because his hands seem to always be sweaty. But she WILL hold Larry's hand because he walks a decent pace that she can keep up with him and his hands are always warm and dry. So seeing Poppy hanging on Larry as he walks isn't out of the ordinary. Hassel and Rika make up for it by giving the best piggy back rides in the world, though.

Nessa x Mer!Reader
Franchise: Pokémon
Genre: One-shot; friends to lovers
Trigger warnings: None
Proofread, but I'm stupid, so I might have missed something. Sorry T~T
A/n: A little something I've been wanting to do for a while. Happy (extremely) belated Mermay!
"Dreadnaw, use Rock Tomb!" Nessa commanded the Pokémon before her. Dreadnaw obeyed the order immediately and let out an angry cry as it kicked up rocks and sent them flying towards the Appletun on the other side of the field.
"You're doing great, Appletun! Now use Solar Beam!"
As usual, Milo was beating Nessa into the dirt. Her eyes widened as the Pokémon began to gather light fueled by the sun that had been previously set up by Milo's Eldegoss. Dreadnaw was weakened, and she had no more team members that could fight, but there was no way she was going to give up. Her honor and dignity as a gym leader was at stake.
"You can do it, just hang in there, Dreadnaw!" She encouraged. "Take it head on then make a comeback with Aqua Tail!"
Dreadnaw grunted in agreement. Nessa could see it physically tense up, waiting for the Solar Beam to hit.
"No-!"
Nessa watched in anguish as her ace yelled out in pain as the blinding light made contact. The crowd was going wild, people were screaming, cheering, chanting for both Nessa and Milo.
Please make it, please, please make it.
The light began to settle as Appletun's attack finished. Nessa squinted over the dust that had been kicked up to see the state of her Dreadnaw. The announcer's voice blared over the intercom before she even had a chance to react.
"-and it looks like Dreadnaw is unable to fight, which means Milo is the winner once again!"
Once the initial shock was over, Nessa ran over to Dreadnaw and knelt down beside it.
"I'm so sorry buddy, I shouldn't have..." She sighed, pulling out her Pokéball. "You did amazing."
*•.¸❀
Interviewers crowded the lobby of the Turffield gym, making it hard for Nessa to escape the locker room.
"Who designed this place? Since when do locker rooms not have a back exit? God." Nessa muttered to herself as she swiftly dodged the camera crew and news reporters before being spotted. At least she had practice escaping paparazzi. Lots of practice. She successfully exited the building when she heard a voice call out to her.
"That was a great match, Nessa! You and your team make one heck of an opponent."
Nessa turned around to see Milo smiling at her cheerfully. Win or lose, he always had something to be optimistic about. Sometimes Nessa wished she had that superpower.
"Y-yeah, thanks." She answered, awkwardly tugging at her sunglasses. "I'm kind of in a hurry, so..."
"Oh, no worries." Milo assured her. "I know you're a busy person. Keeping up with your gym, modeling. Anyways, I'll see you around!"
"Mhm. See you." With a curt nod, she briskly picked up her pace. She wanted to get as far away from the stadium as possible. "Next time, we're going to win. And I mean it. I'm supposed to be a gym leader, I'm not going to be able to keep my position if I let type disadvantages be such a huge roadblock."
Saying Nessa is a competitive person would be an understatement. What's the point of trying anything if you don't win? She was going to get stronger. She had to get stronger.
*•.¸❀
Hours had passed since her loss to Milo. Hours upon hours of training and Nessa still didn't feel like they had accomplished anything. Despite this, she and her team were exhausted, and she decided to quit for the day. She collapsed into the grass with a heavy sigh and looked up at the sky, now an orange-pink as the sun began to set.
"Draaaaw..."
Dreadnaw lightly headbutted the side of Nessa's head, a look of concern on its face. Nessa smiled tiredly and reached up to stroke its cheek.
"You did great today. Why don't we go for a quick swim before heading home?"
Nessa stood up and brushed the grass from her clothing and walked down the grassy slope towards a small lake on the outskirts of the wild area. The water glistened beautifully underneath the setting sun, and Nessa felt the tension in her body melt away just by looking at it. Upon reaching the lake, she removed her sandals and slowly waded into the water, while Dreadnaw loudly ran into the water and began splashing around excitedly. Nessa closed her eyes and inhaled, taking in the fresh scents of lush water plants.
"Naw!"
"Huh?" Nessa opened her eyes and turned her attention back towards Dreadnaw, who was staring intently at a bushy area of horsetails near the edge. The water was rippling as if something had made a quick dive beneath the surface. Deciding to investigate, she made her way towards the source of the splash, expecting it to be a fish Pokémon of some sorts.
"I don't see anything. It was probably just a Feebas or someth- AH!"
"Hmhmhmm~"
From within the horsetails, something had splashed water into Nessa's eyes, a sharp giggle coming right after. Nessa wiped the water from her eyes, and stared in disbelief at the culprit.
"What... You're a..."
With only their head and the tip of their tail emerging from the water, a person with the tail of a fish looked up at Nessa with mischief dancing in their eyes. The way their scales shimmered in the sunlight made it hard for Nessa not to reach out and touch them. After staring at them for what felt like hours, trying to discern if this was all real or not, Nessa cautiously reached out her hand towards the Merperson, but their eyes widened at the sudden close contact and they quickly retreated into the safety of the water.
"No, wait!" Nessa yelled out. "I wasn't going to-" the ripples in the water settled, and there was no sign of them. "They're gone..."
Nessa left the water, still in shock from what she had seen. She had come face-to-face with a real Merperson, like something out of a fairytale. She decided right then and there that she would befriend them, and that she would keep this a secret, even from Sonia. Who knew what would happen if word got out about the existence of Merpeople.
Even if they weren't friends yet, Nessa vowed to protect them at all costs.
*•.¸❀
Nessa woke up bright and early the next morning and headed straight towards the bakery. Before heading to the gym, she planned on getting her soon-to-be friend a pastry as an ice breaker. She stood in front of the glass case looking at all of the warm, freshly baked pastries.
"What would Merpeople even eat?" She mused.
"What was that, Miss?" Asked the baker behind the counter.
"O-oh! Nothing, sorry." Nessa replied, silently cursing herself for speaking out loud. "Um, I'll take two raspberry danishes, please."
After paying for the pastries, she left the bakery and made her way back towards the lake where she met the Merperson. Her thoughts began to wander back to the playful look in their eyes that sparkled like the water, their wet hair clinging to their forhead, and the sound of their voice after they had splashed her. It was all so enchanting. Nessa hadn't realized how long she had been walking until she heard a voice coming from the lake.
"Your face is all red."
Nessa snapped out of her daydream and looked towards the source of the voice. There in the lake, propped up against a large rock was the Merperson, staring at her with an amused smile tugging at their lips. She touched her cheek and discovered that her face was not only red, but hot.
"Oh, um, I must have gotten a sunburn." She said sheepishly.
"Mhm, sure." The Merperson replied. They pushed themselves from the rock out towards the center of the lake, floating on their back. "So why'd you come back? To oggle the fish person, I presume?"
"Oggle? No, I, well. I brought you something." Nessa held out the bag for them to see.
"A bag? Just what I've always wanted!" They said sarcastically, splashing water into the air in mock excitement.
Nessa laughed. "No, I mean I brought you something in the bag. A raspberry danish." She pulled one of the pastries out of the bag and went to sit on the edge of the lake.
"A raspberry what?" They swam over to where Nessa had sat herself on the grassy bank. "Mm, it smells good."
Nessa handed it out to them. "Here, try it."
The Merperson looked inspected it for a moment before reaching out a hand to grab it, but before they did, they grabbed a fistful of Nessa's shirt and quickly wiped their hands on it before taking the pastry.
"Hey! What was that for?!" Nessa exclaimed. "Now my shirt is soaking!"
They shrugged. "Oh, I'm sorry. I figured you were supposed to eat this dry, but I guess it needs to be dipped in lake water first."
"You're kind of a piece of work, aren't you?" Nessa said as she wrung out her shirt.
The Merperson giggled in reply and took a bite of the danish. "Hey, this is actually pretty good."
Nessa smiled. "I'm glad you like it." Her phone vibrated in her pocket, which made the Merperson perk their head up in interest.
"What was that noise?"
"Oh, just my phone." Nessa answered.
"Phone? What's that?" They asked curiously.
"It's- shoot. I have to get to the gym."
"Gym?'
"Yeah." Nessa stood up and put her phone back in her pocket. "I have to go. But real quick... Can I get your name? Mine's Nessa."
"Nessa..." They repeated. "My name's [Y/N]."
"I like it. It's pretty." Nessa said with a smile.
[Y/N] swam over to the edge. They seemed... Down. "Nessa? Will you... Will you come see me again? It gets lonely out here."
Nessa crouched down by the edge. "Of course, I promise I'll come back every day." Without thinking, she brushed the bangs out of their eyes, causing their cheeks to flush a faint pink. Nessa's hand lingered on their cheek for a second too long as she looked into their eyes. Their beautiful eyes... "Um, anyways, I'll see you later, [Y/N]." Nessa backed away from the bank, and gave them a wave before hurrying away, trying in vain to keep her face from lighting up any more than it already was.
"Bye, Nessa." They called from behind her.
For some reason, those parting words seemed to vibrate in the back of her skull. They had such a nice voice. Nice eyes, nice hair, a nice smile.
Nessa felt lighter and giddier that day than she had in ages. She had difficulty focusing on her work, which concerned some people, but she didn't care. All she cared about was getting to see them again.
*•.¸❀
A few months had passed since Nessa and [Y/N]'s first meeting. The first few weeks consisted of Nessa bringing them food offerings, or else they would just sit there, arms crossed and pouty, and pretend she wasn't there. It was a little aggravating, but soon the Merperson became accustomed to Nessa's presence, and "offerings" were no longer necessary.
"Have you beaten him yet?" [Y/N] asked. They were sitting on the edge of the bank beside Nessa, with only the tip of their tail in the water. Nessa sighed in response, her furrowed brow giving an amused [Y/N] their answer.
"No..." The young woman replied, glancing away out of embarrassment. [Y/N] only laughed in response.
"Aww, are those cute little plants giving you trouble~?" [Y/N] playfully poked Nessa's nose, laughing even harder at her surprised and bashful expression.
"H-Hey, it's not funny!" Nessa half heartedly swatted [Y/N]'s hand away and adjusted the denim cap she was wearing. "Even with my team knowing practically every ice type move under the sun, it feels like he's just this indestructible wall. It's so frustrating." She glanced over at [Y/N], whose usual mocking expression was gone, and instead was replaced with one of sympathy.
"Well, regardless, I wish I could see one of your matches." [Y/N] looked off into the distance. There was an uncharacteristic sadness in their eyes that made Nessa's heart crack.
"I wish you could too." She said quietly. There was a moment of silence, before [Y/N] spoke up.
"Um, Nessa?" They said quietly.
"What's wrong?" There was a bit of worry in her voice. The Merperson was never this... vulnerable.
"Do you... enjoy coming to visit me? Aren't I boring? I can't exactly leave..."
"Of- of course I do!" Nessa assured. "I've come to visit you every day, haven't I? Just like I promised." She gave [Y/N] a reassuring smile and laid her hand atop theirs. The softness of their hand was almost distracting, she kind of wished she could run her fingers over their silky smooth skin for hours.
"Yeah, you have." [Y/N] exhaled, letting out a bunch of tension they didn't know they were holding in. "Just like you promised." They scooted closer to Nessa, and rested their head on her shoulder.
Nessa's heart nearly leapt out of her chest. Her eyes wide, she looked down at their ethereal figure. They looked so calm, so at peace. The fact that they trusted her enough to be this close filled her with a warmth she had never felt before, and one she wanted to preserve for as long as possible. She intertwined her fingers with theirs, and gently kissed their forehead.
"And I'll continue to keep that promise. Because... because you're the most precious thing in the world to me."
