Back with some more Italian folk magic thoughts and recommendations

I believe the spirit of my Nonna was reaching out to me recently as I was decluttering in my efforts to spark change in the new year. I went through some boxes in my basement and came across her old chaplet rosary and several holy medals she kept and immediately felt a sense of immense comfort after a stressful week. Her rosary, though beautiful, is a precious and fragile heirloom and while I would love to use it in my day to day practice, I fear it’s too delicate to carry around. So for now, I will put her rosary on my altar and give it a special place.

The chaplet rosary did give me inspiration though. I’ve found in moments of intense anxiety and dysregulation I need an external means of grounding. In college I used to carry around prayer beads and say meditative chants when I was overwhelmed to keep me in the present. I’ve since lost those beads and have reconnected to my folk practice, finding that praying the rosary has a similar effect for me. After rediscovering my Nonna’s chaplet I decided to craft my own 2 decade rosary I could cary with me. Granted, I’m not really Catholic anymore and consider myself mostly secular (though I heavily resonate with animism and ancestor veneration), the rosary feels like more of an emotionally and culturally significant tool for me as opposed to a religious one.

I used sodalite beads for my rosary to help promote emotional balance. As I crafted my rosary I thought about my Nonna and my memories of her, as well as my intention of inner peace, protection, and blessing. As I worked I burned loose rose and mugwort incense to invite out the divine energy of the Madonna as well as increase the power of my intention. It was a very meaningful and personal process, but one I would recommend if you’re so inclined. Since creating this chaplet rosary I’ve carried it with me to work in case I need that external grounding. It’s given me a sense of ease and a deeper connection to my Nonna ( who I miss very much).

I try to remember to post about my reconnecting journey and folk practice every once in a while— though my last post on the topic was 6 months ago. I’ve come across more resources recently that I would highly recommend for others interested in learning about Italian folk magic that were not included in an older post I made. These are more recent publications and are more accessible than some of the academic sources I shared. These first is an academic text but it’s one I thoroughly enjoyed. Italian Witchcraft and Shamanism: The Tradition of Segnature, Indigenous and Trans-Cultural Shamanic Traditions in Italy by Dr. Angela Puca. It’s an enlightening and incredibly well researched read. She also has a YouTube channel where she discusses her work. I highly recommend checking it out.

I’d also like to recommend Della Medicina: The Tradition of Italian-American Folk Healing by Lisa Fazio for my more herbalism and green witchcraft inclined practitioners— though there’s plenty of in depth info beyond herbal remedies. I’d rate this one a 10/10– it’s super thorough and incredibly interesting. It feels like the perfect blend of academic and layman information. I really appreciated this book and it deserves some more love!

To everyone curious about fic updates…. I promise they will be updated soon. Back in December I had issues with multiple client’s health insurance and became extremely burnt out and overwhelmed by the process of fighting with insurance companies (fuck united most of all, all my homies hate united). It triggered a chronic illness flare so bad that all I’ve been able to do is go to work and sleep. I’ve written when I had energy but that hasn’t been much so it’s been like trudging through the mud to do much of anything.

I’ve had tonsillitis on and off for almost 2 months straight folks… and my own insurance is dicking me around about getting properly treated for it. Plus getting a tonsillectomy in your 30s fucking sucks so I’ve just been living with it. America is a dumpster fire. Hopefully there’s something for both Play Dead and Ego Death by the weekend. I read (and write) an unhealthy amount of Devil's Minion/Armandaniel fic, so I thought this little list was long overdue. These are the authors I find myself returning to again and again, or who are writing some of my fave WIPs right now. 1. Author: Tei on AO3 ~ @bloodripelives here on tumblr Favorite Fic by Them: Acts of Collusion Why I'm Obsessed: Some of the best BDSM I have ever read, and some of the only believable tertiary Danlou I've seen in the fandom. The atmosphere is deeply erotic, almost cloying, and you get the sense that when Louis punishes Armand, it's a healing thing for both of them - a real shot at redemption and cleaning the slate. 2. Author: AnimalCeramics on AO3 - @animalceramics here on tumblr Favorite Fic by Them: Blanket of Night Why I'm Obsessed: Too few people write true horror between these two. This is some of the best psychological horror/suspense horror AND erotica I've ever read full stop. *SNL Guy* It has everything!

3. Author: Thunder_Puss on AO3 - @pickingbelovedoffthesofa here on tumblr Favorite Fic by Them: Lie Back and Let Me Unlock You Why I'm Obsessed: I gotta admit. Cannibal mafia human AU was a hard sell in the summary. But I was IMMEDIATELY sucked in by the BEST scummy young Daniel I have ever read, and a truly insane, vulnerable, beautifully broken Armand. Plus she SHATTERS the Overton Window like you NEVER know what's gonna happen and I love that. 4. Author: Nikocat on AO3 - @nile-the-empathy-cleric here on tumblr Favorite Fic by Them: Ego Death Why I'm Obsessed: Quite simply, this 'Armand goes to art therapy' fic is literature. It has helped me process my own trauma and think about things I experienced in new ways. The world of it is expansive, and Nile NEVER takes the easy way out narratively. 5. Author: GrayGiantess on AO3 - @graygiantess here on tumblr Favorite Fic by Them: Camboy Molloy Why I'm Obsessed: Usually when you see an escort fic in this pairing it's hot young Armand being the escort. I LOVE that it's Old Maniel, and the beautiful details of their budding romance/crackling chemistry in this fic have me consuming every new chapter like fat lines of Louis's coke. Obviously not an exhaustive list. I'll do more of these little listicles as I have time. What are some of your faves?

Eslam is a teacher and a young mother of 2; Hanaa (age 5) and Ana (age 1). Since last year, she and her family have been fighting to survive the siege on Ghazzah.

She and her family lost their home to the bombings, displacing them all to a tent. The unhygienic conditions have caused both of Eslam's children to develop skin diseases.

Medicine and soup are extremely expensive in Ghazzah, $30 a bar; since Eslam's husband Rasmi had his place of work bombed, these prices are are completely unsustainable.

In order to help support their daily life and be able to evacuate, they need to raise $50,000 USD. So far, they've only raised $14,262 USD; their last donation was 4 hours ago.

I think I might take a bit longer between chapters from now on, but I won't leave it hanging for over a month again. I had a VERY difficult time with this chapter. It was the one I was dreading the most. I rewrote it at least 4 times, but I'm finally okay enough with how it turned out. I hope it was worth to the month and a half hiatus 🥺

I will update Ego Death tonight hopefully (tomorrow at the latest). Life has been crazy lately and so many things got in the way of writing/ editing. One of my irl cases became incredibly overwhelming and I felt really burnt out. I love what I do but sometimes the system sucks and dealing with courts, angry families, and CPS is extremely taxing and disheartening. I cried every time I had supervision the past 3 weeks. It’s been rough, but writing again has been a release. I am so grateful to every who’s been supporting this fic and me! You’re the best 💕
