Pros & Cons of Having Monitoring Devices
Though some people have their beliefs on if monitoring devices are safe or not, monitoring devices are used in various places: hospitals, homes, cameras, and more. Some believe that having monitoring devices is a good idea, and others believe that monitoring devices are violating their privacy rights. Should the public really feel unsafe about having cameras watching their every move? Monitoring devices that expose too much information should be banned in order to keep personal information from being exposed. Although cameras are said to be safe, an analysis of people’s concerns suggests that the government should ban monitoring systems that observe their every move. Learning to live with the knowledge that there may be someone listening to your conversation, taking pictures of you, and keeping documents of your every move serves a great purpose to many in the end. Not only are you safe but monitoring devices help ensure that personal liberties are secured and not just given out to anyone who asks for it. This is a key element for public safety, from a household, to the higher power of government.
The cons of having monitoring devices include the violation of the people’s personal liberties and law enforcement gaining too much power. Some people do not believe in having monitoring devices, because they feel as if they are being watched too much. For example, monitoring devices are said to cause more people to have anxiety, emotional, physical and mental problems, especially at their workplace and in public. To fix this problem companies should take away their monitoring devices and use another type of security, hiring security guards to walk around the company would help prevent employees from having anxiety problems.
The pros of having monitoring devices include schools being a safer place. Along with the violation of personal liberties, there is criminal activity. Even though criminals were caught long before cameras were created, monitoring devices make it easier to identify who committed a crime, with more evidence. The schools are protected from vandalism, trespassers, weapons, and thieves. Another way that schools could keep the students safe is by having software monitors put onto each of the students school-issued devices. It could help monitor what each student is doing and prevent inappropriate behavior. Another form of a monitoring device is what can be defined as “physical.” Physical surveillance includes: ID and license cards, police officers, gates, and locks. For example, ID cards are used to identify people, to make sure no one is stealing someone else’s identity, and separating people of different age/sex groups into various categories. Each student at school use school-issued ID cards to get into school, so that trespassers can get noticed. Schools and work places believe that having monitoring devices better assure that they have excellent security. Over the years, schools and jobs have updated their security and monitoring devices so that their students and employees can stay safe.
In conclusion, monitoring devices are safer than not having them. Living with the fact that technology is trying to help the public stay safe may be hard for some people, but monitoring devices are keeping track of everything that you do or listening to your conversation, they are not exposing your public information.

Social Media & News
Social media plays a tremendous role in society, even if it’s just for catching up with old friends and family, or daily news. In the 2010 “Focus on Feed” video, Ruchi Sanghvi revealed that over the past couple of years, status updates and check-ins have become the most concrete use for news and information. Over the past few years, social media network views have sky-rocket, in view of the fact that so many people are upset about news channels publishing misinformation. Today, there are more people keeping up-to-date with social media than there are people watching television. Companies like Facebook and Twitter are two very strategic companies that use the solutions they have discovered through algorithms to get the public's attention (Ward). Creating algorithms are like separating the signal from the noise; helping create and set clear goals for the company, while striving for the best performance. On social media today, more people are interested in creating media consumptions, to get more people’s attention and make them aware of different problems/activities that are going on globally or locally. What is a media consumption? According to Wikipedia, media consumption/media diet is the sum of information and entertainment media taken by an individual or group. As for example, to young boys, video games are the coolest thing ever. They sit in their rooms all day playing violent videos games, which may include gang violence— using guns, inappropriate language, and drugs. Companies like Microsoft and Sony, strategized and used algorithms to attract the youth’s attention. There is an equal amount of men and women playing those types of video games, which was once said to increase attitudes.
According to the “Relevance of Algorithms”, when users click “Search,” or load their Facebook News Feed, or ask for recommendations from Netflix, algorithms must instantly and automatically identify which of the trillions of bits of information best meets the criteria at hand, and will best satisfy a specific user and his presumed aims. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are a great use to people who are seeking information about news, because these companies try to provide their viewers with the best possible news. In the twenty-first century, social media companies try to make sure that all of their information is both understandable and comprehendible for all of their viewers.
In conclusion, not all media consumptions are bad. For example, start-up businesses spend more time on social media, reading books and magazines, and listening to the radio, than an average person (Ward). Daily, those businesses are trying to find new ways to market their business and get the word out. Over the years, media consumptions have sky-rocket tremendously, because there is always something new to watch, read or listen to.
