I'm an immigrant in the U.S. and right now I'm trying to figure out a way to pay for next term's tuition. I am from Ukraine and my entire family was displaced to Ireland when the war started. As a result of the war and displacement, I don't have sufficient funds to sponsor my education anymore :(
I don't know which late/self-diagnosed autistic needs to hear this, but your autism pre-diagnosis wasn't "mild" and you didn't go "under the radar"
You were ignored - whether it be intentionally or unintentionally. There was a time or multiple when you tried to advocate for yourself - when you were visibly struggling, and you were ignored, ostracized and expected to "rise above" it.
You are disabled. You've been disabled. Unfortunately you just did not have the support system to help you.
Update on this post! Madisyn has finally taken down the video. As of earlier today, she hasn't apologized/addressed this in Instagram or YouTube, hopefully it happens soon
Thank you all for supporting the previous post â¤ď¸

Watched this video first thing in the morning. I have supported Madisyn for a very long time, but this was like a punch in the gut.
The video is full of references to Autism Speaks as a legitimate resource, comparing autism to herpes or calling it a disease, and a lot of transphobic rhetoric. If you have ever watched any of Madisyn's videos and liked them, I urge you to leave a comment about her terrible takes. A lot of people are already doing that and I'm really hoping it brings her attention to how poorly she handled the situation.
TW for ableist language, transphobia, and other allistic bullshit in the video

So my autism eval went really poorly :( the psychiatrist said multiple times throughout the meeting that I "don't look autistic" and proceeded to brush my autistic traits off as trauma responses. I was able to get a referral to a psychologist who will hopefully be more open-minded, but I am honestly just so discouraged :(
This maybe sounds mean, but I think we should be able to send doctors âhey, you were wrongâ letters.
I was misdiagnosed with asthma when I was 12 and took asthma meds daily for seven years, and then it turned out I hadnât had asthma in the first place; I actually have a different breathing problem. I donât think the doctor who told me I had asthma (my pediatrician, who I was no longer seeing by that point) ever found out sheâd been wrong. (This is one of at least four misdiagnoses in my life, from a variety of doctors, that I can think of off the top of my head.) Similarly, my first therapist told me she didnât think I was autistic because I wasnât obsessed with trains. I donât think she ever found out that I am, in fact, autistic, because I wasnât seeing her by the time I was diagnosed.
I get that it might be demoralizing to have someone contact you specifically to tell you that you messed up, but I think it would be useful for doctors to have data on how often they misdiagnose patients, especially since some doctors tend to think the patient is generally wrong when attempting self-diagnosis. It would be useful for my former therapist to move me from the mental column of âpeople who erroneously think theyâre autisticâ to âpeople whose autism I did not notice when they were right in front of me.â It would be useful for my pediatrician to realize she needed to look more closely and listen to kids when their breathing symptoms werenât the classic asthma ones.
Doctors can get on their high horse and refuse to believe patients a lot of the time, and the power dynamic makes that dangerous in plenty of situations. I think it would be helpful to have a way to at least alert doctors when we have proof they messed up.
