ARTLICKS FESTIVAL LONDON : EXHIBITION, SCREENING, ARTIST TALK, KISS & TELL TOUR
The proxy of looking is the authority to represent someone else in the act of looking. We are being sold a story that has been premised on pipe dreams and illusion. As Laura Mulvey states ‘the male viewpoint controls the viewing within the image and sets the spectator’s looking position’. In a world in which sexual attractiveness is built on subjective preferences, instead we see a flow of carefully constructed repetitive tropes, when a wider range of images could potentially free us to construct our own desires.
‘The hope that we might draw from history is that clear-eyed individuals can see beyond what is socially acceptable to what is morally right. If we get used to questioning even what is universally accepted, we might be able to avoid getting used to social norms that are well past their use by date.’ Julian Baggini (2015)

Sky Line is a utopian virtual world based on London, where players explore a new transportation network that connects galleries and project spaces across the city. Modelled as a floating version of the Circle Line, each station is based on a location participating in the Art Licks Weekend festival, the work is set on a railway that connects twenty independent art galleries with its curatorial concept and physical architecture adapted to its digital double in time and space at the station stop. The Hackney stop features A Brooks Art.

FROM THE ARCHIVE 2016-2018: Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’ at Turner Contemporary, Margate 2018.
Through weekly meetings, discussions, talks, workshops, walks, research trips, studio visits and individual inquiry, the Journeys with the Wasteland research group developed their own methods for making decisions together, deciding on exhibtion content and artworks. The exhibition foregrounds the multiple perspectives of those involved from the community. In doing so, it mirrors the form of the poem, where Eliot juxtaposes many different voices and references; discussing personal connections between art, poetry and life.
This series of artworks created in Margate for ‘Journeys with the ‘Waste Land’ at Turner Contemporary and developed during the project research period from 2015 to 2018 explores T.S. Eliot the person and The Waste Land poem from a range of different perspectives including the exhibition and performance of four works that address this complex poem and the quixotic poet.
Journeys with 'The Waste Land' was a major exhibition exploring the significance of T.S. Eliot’s poem The Waste Land through the visual arts. In 1921, T.S. Eliot spent a few weeks in Margate at a crucial moment in his career. He arrived in a fragile state, physically and mentally, and worked on The Waste Land sitting in the Nayland Rock shelter on Margate Sands. The poem was published the following year, and proved to be a pivotal and influential modernist work, reflecting on the fractured world in the aftermath of the First World War as well as Eliot’s own personal crisis.

Celebrating both Flamenco & Colita on international flamenco day 16th November 2022. Colita, a towering landmark of Spanish contemporary photography, Colita is regarded as the photographer of the "Gauche Divine" in Barcelona, a group of Catalan intellectuals and artists who were active in the 1960s. Together with J.M. Caballero Bonald they explored Flamenco in the seminal book ‘Luces Y Sombras Del Flamenco’

From the Archive 2016/17: Being A Girl Is Not A Crime
Boss(Y) Girls Project: “I’m not bossy … I’m the boss.”
The Boss(y) Girls Project was created after WOW (Women of the World Festival in Folkestone/London in 2016) supported by the Folkestone Fringe, with local designers and artists. The name was inspired by Beyoncé’s quote, “I’m not bossy … I’m the boss.” and was designed to address the double standard that girls are seen as bossy and fussy when they are assertive and leading, yet boys are seen as strong and having good leadership skills. No Pink Tax Please!

SHINRIN YOKU
Shinrin Yoku translates literally as ‘Forest shower’ or ‘Forest Bathing’, and is an invitation to totally immerse ourselves in the embrace of the woods.
Shinrin Yoku originated in Japan in the 1980’s as a response to mass urbanization, disconnection from the land, and the results of unhealthy lifestyles in large overcrowded cities.
Shinrin Yoku is an evidence-based approach encouraging people to engage with the natural world – particularly trees; demonstrating through clinical testing and research the physical and immunological benefits of contact with Nature.
