“Just because I’m Pro-Black does not make me Anti-White” • • For over 400 years Black/Brown/POC have been targeted, tormented, stripped, beaten, brutalized, humiliated, disrespected, raped, murdered and not taking serious. So much that even when we are killed in broad daylight - on camera - in front of others - we still get no justice. • • I am a Black man who graduated from a predominately white institution (PWI) and even went to an all white acting school where I was the ONLY black enrolled full time. Often finding myself having to speak on behalf of other POC. Not every BLACK person is the same. Our stories, cultural practices, language, way of life, complexions etc. vary in multitudes. • • At this Black Lives Matter mural in Brooklyn, NY I wept. I wept for those names that I stood upon realizing that could’ve been me. Painted in the street. Waiting for justice. Another lost life. Another number. Another statistic. Each one of these names were once alive and breathing. With people who loved them. Families. Children. Friends. And that could’ve been me. Doesn’t matter how educated I am. Or how sincere. Or how nice. Because people can’t see that until they get to know me. So what they see is my physical appearance. In which I should NEVER have to alter to make those around me more comfortable. • • Being Black comes with many sorrows but also an abundance of Joy. Shit I’d be mad too if I wasn’t born Black. ESTABLISHED [7.18.1991] • • Tomorrow makes 10 days since my surprise 29th birthday during COVID-19. Granted I knew more about the surprise than I should have because I needed to know what was going on. But nonetheless, I was “surprised” when the time had come. • • Safety precautions were taken: Temperature checks were given at the door. Hand sanitizer and masks were made available. We even had matching spa slippers for everyone. No temperature was over 98.1 degrees. And safe to say no illness or symptoms have occurred since then (Thank God). Thank you to everyone who was in attendance - even the ones I met for the first time. • • With this new journey around the sun I ask that God continues to cover me and keep me protected. Letting no hurt, harm or danger come my way. I thank God for the talents he has blessed me with. The genuine love in my heart for others. And the path in which He has chosen for me. I am filled with joy while continuing to work towards peace, all while trusting the process. • • If you are reading this - I pray the same prayer for you as well. We don’t always know what’s in store for us - even when we think we have a clue. But as long as you Trust God and know you are created in His image - then all things are possible. But I mad a vow to start sharing more. Even when it’s ugly. I’m learning that I’m not alone on this journey. ISSA THING • • My anxiety has been at an all time high! I’ve never lived through a Global pandemic before so each day is different, do you agree? • • Lately I’ve been questioning everything - down to my very existence. Most days are good but some days I feel like I’m going crazy. A slight panic attack out of nowhere. Small everyday things become triggers. I started painting, reading more, keeping up with therapy, writing in my journal and still attempting to have a virtual social life 🥴 • • I realized that I couldn’t be the only person going thorough this... “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth”-Pablo Picasso • • My second major production of 2018 was “The Exonerated”. A true story told through the words of the accused. The play was included 7 individuals who were wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death row (one whom was killed by execution) in the United States...only to be freed after serving major time for crimes they did not commit. It included the story of Sonny Jacobs (played by the incomparable @lauralockwood777 )- the first woman to ever be sentenced to Death Row in the history of the U.S. • • This piece reminded me of how #Art is political, personal, passionate, precise and provocative. These stories must be heard. They must be told. It reminded me that we must use our art and voices for the betterment of our culture, livelihood and shed light on social injustices. We must use our art as a means to bring awareness to ideals and values that are beneath our standards in order to correct them. We must first acknowledge the problem. Then come together to find solutions. • • This production allowed me to cross paths and create friendships with a group of talented and hardworking individuals. The dedication made to create this show was outstanding and an experience I will never forget. Our energies connected and became the voices of those that needed to be heard. We were even blessed with the presence of Kerry Max Cook - one of the people who’s story is dramatized in the play. It was unreal. These stories were emotionally draining, sad and angry but still beautiful. • • So if you’re reading this...Give more love. Start with yourself. Pass it to others. Pray it be contagious. May you be great. Secure that bag. Go and get the money - go and get the money. Drink water. Exercise. Eat healthy. But also have a snack too. Don’t be so hard on yourself. We all have flaws.
