Before covid 19 and all the travel restrictions, Ramon and I just bought a boat on FRIDAY THE 13TH. The very same day we were living on it with our little BLACK CAT. As if that isn't enough of sailor superstition, we ALSO changed the NAME of the boat. 😂 What does that have to do with these pictures? well, let me elaborate... Apart from the above, we weren't very experienced sailors and boat maintenance was an always present echo, never deeper explored... Till we met a few skillful engineers that work for the countless flotilla companies in the Ionian. Some of them; always eager to spread the electrical and mechanical word. 🛠️ Several times we ended up with one of these flexible geniuses, I kid you not; they may not look like it but they almost perform the split over the engine to inspect if all is fine. Incredible... In the engine room as in all other places on the boat, it's a constant battle against corrosion and movement. WD 40 works wonders... ⚔️ We don't have any keel bolts but many of the charter engineers work with production boats and always warn us. Corrosion and rust, please do check your keel bolts!!!!!! ⛏️ This week after working on the boatyard we saw this bolted keel. As you can see in picture one it was taken off the hull. This in order to grease and check the condition. It was the first time I saw it detached on the dry and I found it immensely interesting. In the third picture, you can see where this keel attaches to the hull. Mutiny doesn't have any keel bolts and to be fair we are immensely happy about this!! Moreover, we narrowed down our choice of boats based on not having this built up. Seaworthy is what we breathe,... We need to be able to put all our trust in the hull and keel not separating from each other. A sailboat made of one mold is our preference. I love clouds! They tell us so much. Will it rain? Is there wind coming? Are they good weather clouds? Is there a storm building in the distance? Today, our soon to be 80 years old neighbor Gwen from the pirate boat, a few boats apart from us said: "Don't cast a cloud till May is well out". With her half Irish/Scottish accent it sounded like a fairy tale, although it was only one sentence 😁. Anyhow, picture 1, I took this a few days ago, this cloud attracted my attention and I stared at it for a long time. It is quite different from all the others because the top is very high in the sky; the stratosphere and the lowest part is kilometers away. A very vertically long cloud, I would say... amazing... For the other cloud porn addicts the wikipedia description: Picture 1: A cumulonimbus incus (Latin incus, "anvil") also known as an anvil cloud is a cumulonimbus cloud that has reached the level of stratospheric stability and has formed the characteristic flat, anvil-top shape. The first time things went quite wrong... Summertime meant the quay was full and there was no place to hide for the coming storm 😱. As you can see amazingly well displayed in this stunning picture by Bobby Dazz. Not only the harbor was busy but also just outside of it were way too many boats to closeby for anchor. Ramon, I and Styx, held an anchor watch and there was one moment we both dozed off that only lasted 15 minutes. Long enough for another boat to slam onto us... That boat was anchored way too close to us, we should have moved but we thought it would be fine. Lesson learned? Move your boat when you think another one is too close to you... After the incident, we moved further out to make sure nobody would bump into us. Moving further out means more swell created by the 45 knots Southerly... AND WE ROLL ALL NIGHT AND WE ROLL ALL DAY... 🤣 That made us extremely tired. A little bit later a boat left the quay and we made the wrong decision to quickly go over there and moor up...
