Assembling Game Boy Color Games
I thought this would be a fun post, just to show the process.
If you're interested in the game, Annihilator is available on itch.io. You'll need to join my newsletter, if want to get notified for when physicals are available. ROM: https://saltandpixel.itch.io/annihilator Newsletter: https://zc.vg/hrVkA
Tumblr media
Inside these boxes are 230 computer boards of Annihilator for the Game Boy Color. Inside Gadgets supplied them and they are great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sourced shells from a manufacturer in China. There really is no other place to get them. They are very well made. Though, the next batch I get will need to be blank. I didn't realize when I ordered them, they would have a certain someone's branding on them.
Tumblr media
I had 24 cart only preorders, and decided to assemble and ship them out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I planned on making labels at home. I wanted to do something extra for my first ever preorders. I gave them a choice of holographic Red or Blue First Edition labels.
Tumblr media
The labels were printed on an Epson XP-15000 and I have a Brother Scan n Cut for the .... uhh cutting. I plan on sending these out next week. This was also a good time to test out my assembly process. But the final, boxed will like the image below. I'll be ordering boxes and manuals next week also.

Let me tell you about BLITZ VIKING (working title). My first idea was to call it Ogrekill (like a play on overkill) but it felt a little to gruesome.
Tumblr media
It's a game I really can't figure out yet. I'm not sure I want the main character to be a Viking. I kind of want him to be a wrestler. But the current idea, is that he's carrying around a huge cannon. Maybe it ties into the story somehow?
But even the cannon idea, I don't like much. The "fun'st" aspect of the prototype (video above) is the jump and spin and bounce on enemies. But it does need something else. IDK!
Tumblr media
What I do know, is that it has Orcs, Trolls and Beast. I think the natural protagonist to that is a barbarian. Blitz Barbarian does have the benefit of alliteration. But is it original? Should I even care about originality?

An this is one of the levels in the game I'm recreating. I get to do a little more with it now - which I'm excited about.

Years ago, I posted the image below to Twitter. It was one of those minimum effort things. It became my most popular post, ever.
Tumblr media
So I decided to make a prototype. *Which you can download from my website: https://saltandpixel.com/ (you'll need a Game Boy or emulator). The plan is to restart development next month on a prequal game to the movie. I'm calling it Night of the Flesh Eaters, after the prospect title of the movie. I want to make it like, Link's Awakening but a survival horror.
If you would like to stay up to date, join my newsletter: https://zc.vg/hrVkA
Tumblr media
Night of the Flesh Eaters, an unofficial prequel to George A. Romero’s groundbreaking 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, is in development as a top-down survival horror game for the Game Boy Color. This long awaited homage offers fans of retro gaming and horror a nostalgic experience.
Set in a fictional town in Pennsylvania, the story follows Ben, a central figure from Night of the Living Dead, and the events leading up to the cinematic nightmare. Explore a town under siege, scavenge for supplies, and face unrelenting ghouls. This project aims to honor the legacy of Romero’s work and invites horror enthusiasts, retro gamers, and potential collaborators to join the journey.
“Video games owe a lot to Night of the Living Dead, and it doesn’t make sense for it not to have its own. That’s what I’ve set out to make.” says Brandon, founder of Salt & Pixel.
------ Developing this game has been a bit of a struggle, even though it's public domain. *You can read about that here: https://saltandpixel.com/night-of-the-living-trademark-infringement

In January I made an announcement for the official release of Annihilator for the Game Boy Color. After being in development for 2-3 years, it was an exciting moment for me. What was also exciting, I was able to pick up some coverage with a cold press release. That was a first. The boost in digital sales allowed me to hire an artist for a new cover. I've been able to grow the game. That's what I hope this year is about. You can get Annihilator for $10 on itch.io
What's next?
Well, I'm also making 1:1 modern version of the game for PC. A demo will be available soon. Once the cover art is finished.
youtube
I'm thinking about selling a poster with early access to the game to help raise funds for localization.
People are wanting to get their hands on physical copies of the GBC game, and I want to make regional carts.
I think this is pretty good first post. Maybe I can follow it up with some pixel art?
