Welcome back everyone to "one sketch of THEM for each episode"

And ehy, the whole reason I'm doing this is because I suck at making people look like they are supposed to! So I'm not going to be too harsh on myself.

On the other hand... The only Merlin I like is the one in 1×09 😭

So this post caused quite of a stir, so this is in answer to everyone asking themselves: “WTF?”

In my last year of High School, we were tasked with creating some designs for these two buildings in a park close to our school. Long story short, instead of choosing two sets of designs, they chose mine and later tasked me to create more, so it could all be cohesive. The general theme I had gone with is sort of like... “Magic creatures in a fantasy land”, since it was for kids. I had to go with things that could be done quickly (We had 2 months)

So I put some Merlin references. Sadly some ideas had to be simplified, so there are only two recognizable references in the walls...

On the little columns, however...

So I’ll show you the designs, keep in mind that I was working on a tight schedule... 

vs How it looked while being made

Fairies were a common fixture. If you look at him from up close you can see Merlin’s red scarf and his boots. So like... dragonlord Merlin with a dragon. (It can be Aithusa, OR it could be one of my favorite tropes, which is Arthur as a Dragon)

Another one is this design:

I think the lake Avalon, with the island and tower, is easier to recognize than the last one.

(The lighting sucks I know)

But the REAL deal are the little columns.

Top left was supposed to be white, but I was asked to turn her blue. But in my mind she’ll always be little Aithusa.

Next to it: The iconic blue butterflies from 5x12. 

THE NEXT ONE IS A REFERENCE TO FANFIC OF COURSE. The Dragon Rises from Footloose, the design is completely from Mushroomtale. We made no money from this, so I just put in the reference. Also, the finished product is always different from the original.

On the bottom left we have Merthur, but like... as dragons. I threw in even more references, like the COIN, Merlin’s scarf, Arthur’s pendant, the scales that look like a crown, the transition from red to blue...

And last, but not least, a bear (with a long tail because as I said, the theme is ‘fantastic beasts’) and a merlin (with 2 pairs of wings because as I said, the theme is ‘fantastic beasts’). For those of you who don’t know, Arthur actually means bear! Also for those of you who don’t know, Merlin actually means merlin! You learn something new every day. So a bear and a merlin.

I hope this was satisfactory and answered all your questions, I’ll tag the people who were curious in the comments.. There are more designs of course, but have nothing to do with Merlin, so I didn’t mention them, but just so you know, I also snuck my OC there because she’s been with me for 10 years and I love her.

I'm starting this thing that I call "One sketch of THEM for each episode"

For several reasons. Though especially because 1) they are just wonderful and 2) I am horrible at drawing people that actually look like who they are supposed to be. Hopefully drawing them 65 times will help and 3) it's almost Christmas T.T

I also beg you to ignore the difference in colour between the pics. Inconsistency is my middle name.

In honour of Merlin being number 2 on trending, I'm gonna share a couple of pages of the comic I'm writing based on Footloose's Next To Die, which is among my favourite fics of all time.

I'm making it for myself, mainly because Idk how she feels about stuff based on her own works.

But, given how much I love the fic, and how much the finale hurts me, here are some sketches.

Also, forgive my chicken scratch, I blame my horrible handwriting on my dad, cuz my mum's looks straight out of a handwritten 14th century book.

Anyway, don’t you find it funny that Merlin was the one who was supposed to bring magic back to Camelot, and instead was the one who kept it outlawed more than once? I do, I call it irony.

They do say love makes you do strange things.

So Merlin was the one who lighted the match with a spark of hope for all magic users when he was born, just to be the one to snuff it out years later.

Initially Morgana was going to be next, but her file on my computer disappeared, nice! So you get Merlin instead! Someone asked me to do him next in the tags, so it seemed only fair.

Like before, I’ll include some of my thoughts below, and here’s the previous post if you are interested.

First of all. I don’t like that face up in the left corner. But who cares, I need to learn to just go with it, so here it is.

An update from last post: I have decided that centaurs prefer to grow their hair longer. Kings, in particular, almost never cut their hair, why is that? When a kingdom loses a war against the other, it is custom for the King (or queen) who won to cut the losing King’s hair. A king with very long hair is a ruler that either managed to keep the peace among its neighbors or one who hasn’t lost any war. A king can choose to keep their hair short on purpose, but it can be seen as cowardice, as no one can cut your hair if it’s already very short. So it’s regarded by many as a preemptive measure of a weak King or Queen. This concept is taken from some actual historic fact that I morphed into this. Betcha can’t wait to see a long hair-ed Uther, uh?

All of this to say: Merlin has longer hair in here. I would like to imagine it being actually quite long at the beginning, but slowly getting shorter as the years go by. If long hair represents peace (even if just for the Kings), it would make sense for Merlin to shorten it after all he goes through. Yeah. Sad boi hours.

LET’S GO BACK TO SOMETHING POSITIVE!

AITHUSA!

If you’ve seen my last post, you’ll know that my dragons are quite different from the ones we see in canon. So here she is in all of her adorable glory. There isn’t much to say about her, tbh, other than the fact that she’s the cutest! But we already knew that.

Shifting onto the dragonlord side of Merlin, since we talked about Aithusa, we gotta address that drawing on the top left. For no reason aside from the fact that it looks cool, dragonlords have dragon scales on their bodies in this universe! That’s why Merlin must always keep his scarf on. Can’t let anyone see! They go from the sides of his neck, down his spine, and they stop right above his pelvis. I actually made a drawing detailing that, but I won’t share ‘cuz I hate it! 

As for what he is wearing aside from the scarf: 

The first thing he has to put on is his shirt, it’s much longer on the front, as it needs to wrap under the horse’s belly to avoid chafing because of the leather harness.

After that he’ll put on this long version of his jacket, but to hold it in place on the front he needs to secure it with something, that’s where the harness comes into play. As you can see from the second drawing, it’s rather simple to put on, it can’t be otherwise in this universe. He can simply hold it in his hands and step in the places where the legs belong, a bit like us when we put on our underwear. He secures it over his back, sliding in a bag (bottom right) or two if he needs them for something, and then he can attach the jacket through those holes you see on the leather band on top. In my mind, they use something like jacket cuffs/ wristbands. You know, these things:

Maybe Arthur can gift him some better ones for his birthday!

One last thing! The sorcerers in this universe technically have the bodies of unicorns, not horses, lucky for them, the only thing that distinguishes horses from unicorns are the horns on their heads! And they don’t have horses’ heads, just plain, human ones! I still hinted at the presence of a horn in the sketch, even if I didn’t go through with it. Still, you can KINDA see that it’s a unicorn and not just a regular horse by its tail. Some people draw them in a way that resembles a lion’s tail, right? There you go, then. If you squint, you’ll see that the hair doesn’t start directly from the body but is entirely attached to the bone. I couldn’t make it too obvious, or anyone in Camelot would go: “Look at that tail! That person is clearly a sorcerer! Get ‘em!!”

The guards are dumb, but not that dumb!!
