I have bad news
A troubling development is breaks in the Kung Fu Panda community
TLDR: @argentphoenix11 is actually TheGreatestShenFan/Akasainemos, a notorious bad actor and frankly dangerous community member. A document has been created showcasing this association as well as all the hateful and disgusting things this user has done over the past 7 years. I won't link this document here, but check r/KungFuPanda for the pinned post explaining the situation.
I won't be able to answer any questions here. Hopefully this situation gets resolved peacefully and we can all go back to being normal, responsible fans again.

KFP Map Geography
FINALLY! We have solved the mystery of the KFP2 map of China after countless discussions and much speculation by laying an actual map of China over the KFP2 map, and this is the result; (Credit to ShootBANGDang for figuring out the obvious by literally turning the image based on the compass)
For the most part, things line up pretty well with Gongmen being in the right place (close enough at least) as well as the Valley of Peace being in Southern China, specifically in Guangxi. Or at least in the Hunan-Guizhou-Guangxi area. (Some things may not line up just because I don’t think they were going for 100% accuracy, but the idea is clear enough)

Well, the 2 from the logo. I've always thought it was such a cool design. The dragon on it is striking

I recreated the Kung Fu Panda 2 logo for my new video!
Well, the 2 from the logo. I always loved how it looked. A striking gold band surrounds a deep shiny red center, with a very subtle but very cool dragon on it
youtube
Here's the logo I traced in case you want to use it. Tumblr doesn't support vectors so it's a PNG soz

community help with finding a lost kfp2 app!
tldr; lost ipad app with behind the scenes content and excusive art from kung fu panda 2
greetings pandom! ever since 2019 i've been a MASSIVE fan of kung fu panda, practically becoming obsessed with the franchise and learning whatever i could about the movies themselves. one of my huge fascinations has always been with the concept art and visual development, which is why i practically lost my sanity upon first hearing about this
when kung fu panda 2 came out in may of 2011, an artbook was published by insight editions to go along with it much like its predecessor - providing a glimpse into the movie's production. however, with the physical artbook came a lesser known digital companion app meant for the ipad.
it had an even more in-depth look into the movie serving as supplementary material to the artbook itself. it included; galleries with characters, locations, storyboards and other miscellaneous information that was exclusive to the app, all curated by kfp2's production designer raymond zibach.
however the app is no longer available, removed at some point due to insight edition's contract expiring with dreamworks. much of the content is lost and scattered, however there are scarce remnants. the UX designer for the app worked closely with raymond zibach, assisting in the curation process by selecting video and artwork to bring the world of kung fu panda to life.
pictured below are some screenshots from within the app showing the layout and sections

the UX designer used a 3rd party application to make the app, but unfortunately does not have any of the actual files themselves, only the screenshots.
i know there are many out there who are just as passionate for all things kung fu panda whether it be related to the animation, characters, themes, unused concepts or the hard-work of artists and animators alike - especially kung fu panda 2! any assistance, help or leads in locating or recovering content from the app - screenshots or otherwise - would be greatly appreciated and a huge boon to fans!

Lord Shen forged his own spear
A theory...
ok there's a chance some of you eagle-eyed Shen studyers already know this. But a few months ago I was checking out models from the game Showdown of Legendary Legends, and I noticed this:
"Huh, that's weird, the blade is all messed up." I wondered why the game devs decided to make his spear so assymetrical and imperfect. Until I compared it to his spear in the movie:
Clear as day, the thing has a very pronounced curve along its axis. Now I wondered if this was just a technical gaffe, so I looked further back into Shen's development:
Still there. But just to be sure, I went back to the clay model:
And all the way back to the drawing board:
Yep! Fully intentional.
Now I can only guess as to why it's forged so crudely, and my only conclusion can be that he made the "guandao" himself. Perhaps he took it as a sign of pride for him to need to forge his own weapon with zero outside help.
This could be supported by the fact that the weapon he used in the panda massacre is completely distinct from this one:
And no, it's not just a stylized version for the flashback. It's a real weapon that actually exists, and is seen in Kung Fu Panda 3:
So, Lord Shen lost or discarded this weapon after the panda massacre. Thereafter, he forged himself a new one with a lobed blade, one less connected to his old home's "flame" theme and more with his own "eye" design. There is only one small issue with this theory, however...
The durn thing shows up in the 3D portion of Po's flashback. So, it's a wash? Not quite. There's still the possibility Shen forged it himself before he was banished, or that the filmmakers forgot to switch his spears out for this sequence.
If he did make the weapon himself, that also means it was his decision to add this cute goth collar to the crossguard:
That's the end of the theory. Hope I gave you some cold hard steel to chew on.

Another piece of concept art from Kung Fu Panda 2, The Animator's Corner, a sort of documentary extra showing the behind the scenes of Kung Fu Panda 2.
According to Lord Shen, the Furious Five and Po come to him "in chains," but in the movie they are merely shackled. This piece of art is referenced in the Director's Commentary, where the Five "were all chained together at one point, and it just got too crazy..." (Raymond Zibach)

Cool thing I noticed:
Box Lord Shen used to conceal his cannon appears in the Gongmen City Fireworks Factory. Reuse of an asset, or a deliberate creative choice?! Vote now on your phones
(Yes I have scrutinized every frame of this movie)

The Lord of Gongmen
It is said that a city is like a person. It breathes, swells and surges with life, even in the deadest, most derelict corner. Lord Shen is the last heir of Gongmen City, and the throne's rightful claimant. His 30-year return to his ancestral home has forgotten him his purpose. In grief and fear, he has willfully let himself forget what Gongmen City once meant to him. His sacrifices number many, and each one bears a simple reminder--one he would do well to heed:
Gongmen City never forgets.

Figure 1: Lord Shen at sunset
Not-often seen image of Shen himself downtrodden on the front of the boat yet still prideful enough to display his intimidating tail
Presumably he was swiftly posed to display technical aspects of his feather models.. but it looks to me an alternate reality version of his final fight with Po where maybe something different happened in the end...
This was found in a research paper by Feng Xie, Wes Burian, Andy Harbeck, & Ben Kwa for Dreamworks Animation Inc.
