Hasen: you should question authority more often
Tamin: wha— I question authority!
Hasen: asking your boss "can I have more work" is not questioning authority.
Tamin: well, technically, that is a ques—
Hasen: stop it.

A lone Ghaik amidst Giths
Era: Act 1, Mountain Pass
Characters: Gale of Waterdeep
Main tropes: lab rat, survivor guilt, manipulation
Summary: When a Githyanki pulls Gale out of the portal he might have been stuck in, he barely has the time to say three words before a blade is at his neck. From there he is brought to the crèche and becomes the gith prisoner, under the caring care of the resident scientist. Only the threat of the Netherese Orb exploding keeps him alive and fed.
---
Snippet
They killed everyone. All the other thralls had succumbed to Ghustil’s experiment or their jailers' plays. There had been a Tiefling child amidst the prisoners. He had given Gale a toothy grin before following the guard, never to be seen again.
Gale had no doubt that he would be dead too, if not for the Netherless Orb greedily gaping in his chest. He wondered how long before the Orb’s threat became negligible in front of the scientist's morbid curiosity.
He wondered if he still cared.
---
Plot Description:
When a Githyanki pulls Gale out of the portal he might have been stuck in, he barely has the time to say three words before a blade is at his neck. A quick glance at his surroundings and the other two giths glaring from behind, associated with a discreet mental surface scan of his aggressor thoughts, inform him this is a patrol comed to search the Nautiloid remains.
The trio is far too prompt to accuse him of being a Mindflayer Thrall and strong-arm him into following them. They would have killed him where he stood had he not successfully convinced them of the disaster that would be triggered upon his death. Fast thinking and a touch of invisibility allow him to escape them, but not escape Kith’rak voss and his dragon. They fetch him mid run.
Truly overpowered now, Gale has no choice but to follow them to the crèche.
Once in the crèche, it is far too little time before he is proven to bear a parasyte. He becomes the responsibility of the scientist Ghustil Stornugoss, a glorified prisoner turned lab rat at her whims. While he does his best to limit her knowledge and access to the Netherese Orb - no matter the pain she inflicts - he can do little to stop her from studying the parasyte in his head. Only the threat of his death stops her from attempting a more permanent experiment.
The other Thralls are not so lucky.
Sometimes, the gith patrol would bring others infected. Future thralls untransformed as he is, calling themselves True Soul, arrogantly claiming themselves messengers of the absolute. Whoever this god of theirs is, it never comes to help them when they plead and beg while laying in a bloody mess.
Gale rarely turns his prayers to his goddess. Even when he does, pushed by pain and desperation, he never allows his hope to get up. After all, he has done nothing to earn Her forgiveness. It is hard however not to perk up and hope for a savior, after watching living beings reduced in pudding for the raw amusement of warriors. There are times of weakness when Gale reaches out to the weave and prays, hoping without believing that his genuine intentions would be enough for Her to reach back.
Mystra, as always, remains silent.
Perhaps it is time for Gale to take his destiny into his own two hands.

I love the colors so much.
The simpler style give a very nice medievai tapestry vibe!!
"The dragon collapsed, soft belly scales pulsing painfully under the blow. There had been no hesitation in the boy’s strike. There had only been dark determination mixed with a twisted sense of revenge. For the first time in months, the child won."

A very messy and quick painting of the scene from the fic. It tore my heart out and I can't stop thinking about it
