One thing I don't see enough people talk about when it comes to The Ruler is the opening scene and just how many queer writers who write queer stories experience it.

Just last week I was telling my straight, non writer friend about one of my WIPs and she suggested a lot of tips (which I never asked for) about how to "improve" the story which involved either villainizing or straight up erasing non heteronormative aspects I added to the story (spoiler alert for the WIP if anyone who cares)

I explained how 2 of my characters, Diamond and Iris are in a semi-arranged marriage that neither one really wants. I explained that Diamond was a gay man and Iris was an aroace woman but the two "chose" each other because Iris wants to be queen, Diamond knows this and knows that he'd be a better ruler than him so it would be best for the 2 to marry. Later on in the story Diamond meets another girl, Via who he forms an almost sibling-like bond with. Diamond and Via also each end up falling for someone else and those two characters happen to be brothers.

"Why don't you make Iris the villain?" Because she's not a villain and just as much of a victim to her situation as Diamond.

"Why don't Diamond and Via end up together?" Because Diamond isn't attracted to girls, like I said and already has a boyfriend.

"Okay then why not give Iris a new husband so she can have a new heir when she dies?" Because she doesn't want to marry anyone! Adoption exists if she ever does wanna be a mother.

This was really just something that I've been wanting to get out. And I don't think my friend meant any harm and that she genuinely thought those were good story ideas and they might be, but that's just not the story I've been building.

people might think creating OC lore involves a lot of thinking & planning, but in my personal experience, OC development is more like a divine vision from a god slamming you over the head with a mallet while ur doing the fuckin dishes or folding laundry
