What is an Unreliable Narrator? And How to Write One.
An unreliable narrator is a storytelling technique where the narrator's credibility or truthfulness is questionable. The narrator either intentionally or unintentionally provides a distorted or biased account of the events, characters, or situations in the story. This narrative approach can add complexity, suspense, and intrigue to your writing. Here's how you can create an unreliable narrator:
1. Establish a motive: Determine why the narrator is unreliable. It could be due to personal bias, mental instability, deception, or a hidden agenda. Develop their backstory, motivations, and beliefs to understand why they might present a skewed version of events.
2. Use subjective language: Incorporate language and descriptions that reflect the narrator's personal viewpoint and biases. Their opinions, emotions, and interpretations should color their narration, influencing how readers perceive the story.
3. Include contradictions and inconsistencies: Allow the narrator to make contradictory statements or present conflicting information. This creates doubt and keeps the readers engaged as they try to unravel the truth.
4. Reveal information selectively: The unreliable narrator might withhold or reveal information strategically, manipulating the readers' understanding of the story. This can create suspense and surprise as readers discover hidden truths.
5. Showcase unreliable perceptions: Explore how the narrator's perceptions and interpretations of events differ from reality. They may misinterpret actions, misremember details, or even hallucinate. These discrepancies add depth to the character and raise doubts about their reliability.
6. Use other characters as contrasting sources: Introduce other characters who present alternative perspectives or contradict the narrator's version of events. This contrast allows readers to question the reliability of the narrator and form their own interpretations.
7. Employ narrative techniques: Experiment with techniques like foreshadowing, symbolism, or unreliable memory to emphasize the narrator's unreliability. These devices can help blur the line between truth and fiction, leaving readers intrigued and uncertain.
8. Provide hints and clues: Drop subtle hints or clues throughout the story that suggest the narrator's unreliability. This allows readers to piece together the truth gradually and encourages them to engage actively with the narrative.

Humans Are Weird
So there has been a bit of “what if humans were the weird ones?” going around tumblr at the moment and Earth Day got me thinking. Earth is a wonky place, the axis tilts, the orbit wobbles, and the ground spews molten rock for goodness sakes. What if what makes humans weird is just our capacity to survive? What if all the other life bearing planets are these mild, Mediterranean climates with no seasons, no tectonic plates, and no intense weather?
What if several species (including humans) land on a world and the humans are all “SCORE! Earth like world! Let’s get exploring before we get out competed!” And the planet starts offing the other aliens right and left, electric storms, hypothermia, tornadoes and the humans are just … there… counting seconds between flashes, having snowball fights, and just surviving.

body swap
😇
(The obvious place to go with this is their respective chronic pain, but… I didn’t feel like writing about pain. I don’t know where it went, but for this drabble no one is hurting! *handwave*)
Stephen knows immediately on waking that he’s not in his own body. You become very aware of how your body feels when astral projection is a habit. He climbs out of bed, grateful he’s wearing pajama pants, and goes to a mirror to see Tony Stark looking back at him. Stark’s body, anyway.
“Boss,” FRIDAY says at that moment, “you have a call from Doctor Strange.”
Oh, good. “Put him through.”
“Strange, you are way more ripped than I expected under those robes,” Stark says in Stephen’s voice.
Stephen sighs. “You couldn’t have respected my privacy?”
“Come on, I woke up and needed to piss! Are you going to tell me you didn’t look?”
“I haven’t taken your pants off,” Stephen says dryly.
Stark scoffs. “Don’t be a prude, Strange. I put work into that body, it deserves to be admired.”
Stephen takes another look in the mirror. It is a very nice body. “I’m surprised you’re not more concerned with getting back into it.” One hand drifts down to his waistband. Stark looked.
“Eh, you go through enough of this shit, your panic response just turns off,” Stark says. Stephen wavers, half listening, and then pulls the pants away from his body. “No one’s trying to kill me, I knew who to call, we’ll figure out the rest.”
Looking down, Stephen’s mouth goes dry. Fuck. “You should come over,” he says, still looking. Abruptly, he jerks his head up, letting the pajama pants snap back against his body. “So we can figure things out,” he explains, face blazing. Thank the Vishanti Stark can’t see him.
“Be there in a few,” Stark agrees. His voice drops into a teasing range. “And maybe I can give you a proper introduction to that body.”
An inarticulate noise escapes Stephen.
Stark just laughs.

stuff I like
- when the person kidnapped by the villain is all ‘no one’s going to come for me’ and
- someone does, but it’s the person they’d least expect
- EVERYONE COMES because wow, maybe I am depressed because I didn’t think I knew this many people, much less that they liked me
- no one comes and the villain gets pissed on their captive’s behalf and treats them better than their former associates did
- they rescue themselves and everyone’s so impressed but the person yells because I AM CAPABLE AND YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST NOTICED I’D BEEN KIDNAPPED
- they get rescued by a deus ex machina, preferably their dad/mom/grandma/old associate who is exponentially cooler than the heroes
basically, I like it when people get rescued and get validation

Came back wrong this, came back monstrous that
What if they came back loving? What if they came back in love. What if the necromancy worked and you cheated death and it's everything you've ever wanted, but now they love you in a way they never did before and you cannot know if that is because they finally know the lengths you are willing to go for them, or because something in this deathless magic bound their soul to yours to guide them home and it left them no. choice.

I just stumbled upon an ao3 user who makes outrageous commentary in their bookmarks (not to my fics, but to some authors I recognise and whose stuff I absolutely adore as well as some others whose works weren't even at all bad) and I'm beginning to wonder if people actually realise bookmarks are visible unless you private them. Do people even know that bookmarks can be privated? And that authors can see things you write there, like 'average, skimmed some parts/stopped at ch. 5' or 'gratuitous whump and ooc' or 'very run of the mill romcom' or even 'passable'? I shouldn't be angry becos it's not directly aimed at me, but still. That's honestly wild.

We've temporarily disabled the ability to request a new account invitation as a preventative measure due to a spam attack. If you already have an invitation, you can still use it! However, anyone currently in the queue will not receive an invitation until we turn it back on.
Additionally, we have temporarily disabled the form on the Technical Support & Feedback page and taken the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports page offline. Anyone attempting to access the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports will receive an error page about being blocked from archiveofourown.org, but don't panic -- this is not the case! It's just the default error displayed by Cloudflare. You can continue to access the rest of the site as normal.
Lastly, the Organization for Transformative Works' donation page -- which is hosted by a third party provider -- is currently offline due to a DDoS attack. This is the only donation form the OTW uses, so please be cautious of scammers impersonating AO3 or the OTW to solicit donations. We are unable to take them at this time.

OTW Website and Donation Form Are Down
18:30 UTC on July 11, 2023
As of now AO3 is back up. However, in the past hour the OTW website and the donation platform have become inaccessible. We believe it is part of the same attack first made on the Archive. We will be providing updates via this account.
We also want to alert fans that on Twitter someone is using the name AO3_Status_ (note the second underscore). If you are on Twitter, please block and report this account.
The fake account is impersonating our service status account and attempting to scam AO3 users out of money. Fans on all platforms should be wary of anyone soliciting money on behalf of the OTW or its projects at this time. (The real donation form is currently down due to a DDoS.)
Open Doors and Legal Advocacy pages are also not available at this time. Our Fanlore project is being worked on and should be back today.  Our Transformative Works and Cultures site has not been affected. Thank you for being patient while we restore services!
