Free as a Bird

She’s caught in the wheel of a plane,

Her feet swing through the air.

She chokes on smoke and exhaust,

As the engine rips her hair.

The plane reaches several hundred feet,

over cities, farms, and shacks.

People watch her flail her arms.

They smile and wave back.

She screams to tell the plane to land

But the pilot hears no sound.

The plane soars higher, faster, still,

Then crashes to the ground

...But who’s counting?

Math was always my favorite subject.

Find the value of x, the percent of profit

Algebra, trig, geometry, calc

The numbers were always correct and exact.

So at age eleven I counted most numbers

Calories, steps, weight and hunger

3500 to make up a pound

And 2000 is the recommended amount

So I played a weird game with numbers and weight

the scale was the points and the prize was self-hate.

And still to this day, I’ve never won.

Because each pound I lose is never enough.

And now I’m 19 with dieting tabs.

And hoping more miles will make me have abs

I play to win and count less as more.

Only, I think I’ve lost track of the score.
