Finally.... Apple Airplay2

So what's the big deal? First and foremost, AirPlay 2 supports multi-room streaming. With multi-room products becoming a household staple in the last ten years, Apple's move into multi-room audio could be seen as either coming in a bit too late or a welcome alternative to current methods.

Whether it’s using Apple’s own HomePod speaker or other audio brands’ compatible speakers (including Sonos One), Apple is hoping to make its mark in the multi-room market.

Also major tv brands have confirmed that Airplay2 is implemented in multiple tv’s.

SONOS PLAYBASE

Sonos which is behind the popular Play speakers has announced a new model to join its multiroom system lineup, the Sonos Playbase. Designed to be an alternative to the American brand’s Playbar soundbar, launched in 2013, the Playbase is a home theatre speaker of the soundbase or sound plinth variety.

The Playbase is a marked improvement on the Playbar. It will serve a much larger slice of the market thanks to that soundbase form factor and also offers superior sound to that of its older sibling. The design is much improved, and is clearly an evolution of the new Play:5 look and feel. The fact the Playbase can hold its own as a music player is also a big plus. But to get the most from the Playbase, pair it with a Sonos Sub for superb home theatre audio.

AMAZON ECHO - your new best friend…

Online giant Amazon made a smartspeaker that will make Siri look like a complete amateur. Ask questions like, will it rain tomorrow, add coffee to shopping list etc and Echo will arrange. It’s of cause also a speaker, and will play whatever music you ask it to play. Echo can also add music to your playlists. It’s a true smartspeaker!! Bluesound Pulse Flex

The Pulse Flex is a compact two-way speaker which can be combined with another for a stereo pair. It has Bluetooth, a 3.5mm analog/optical input, Ethernet, USB and a headphone output--outclassing most budget Wi-Fi speakers. Both the inputs and Bluetooth on each speaker can act as sources which means they can be retransmitted to other speakers in the system for increased flexibility.

Bluesound is a sister brand to NAD and PSB, based in Canada. The company released the first iteration of its products last year, but says it has gone back to the drawing board for its new products. Unlike Sonos, Bluesound can support hi-res audio up to 24-bit/192kHz over up to seven wireless zones.

SPOTIFY TO LAUNCH VIDEO CONTENT

Spotify had previously promised it would introduce video content to its service and it’s now expected to launch in the US this week.

This is a very natural next move for (music) streaming giants Spotify, the addition of video content is a direct consequence of Youtube becoming more and more a threat to Spotify.

Video content will initially be available only on Android devices, with iOS support to be added by the end of next week, the first week of February. The service will be available only in the US to start with, but plans to distribute content to the UK, Germany and Sweden are in the pipeline. Video content will be available only on the mobile apps and not the web player or desktop apps.

ChromeCast Audio - The end of multiroom systems ?

Meet the Google Chromecast Audio, designed to bring wireless streaming to your offline speakers and amplifiers. The new updated Chromecast for audio is a really big deal for the audio industry.

By launching an entry level adaptor for existing speakers they are all set to take over the multiroom business from Sonos, Denon Heos and Bluesound. 

There will be a multi-room mode, for those with several Chromecast Audio devices dotted around the house. Assuming you already have speakers in different rooms, attaching this little dongle would be a cheap way to get them online and take the fight to the likes of Sonos.

The feature is not fully ready yet, but Google promises it will be made available with a future software update. 

How the Chromecast Audio sounds depends on what device you use it on and what service you’ve chosen. As a general rule, we’d say that you get a performance not far short of what you get when physically plugging in a device.

Im hugely excited to see Google’s bag of streaming tricks being used for music.

In a world increasingly defined by the latest products, it is great to see something that rewards you for holding on to your existing equipment.
