PLATFORM: #Netflix
GENRE: Docuseries
QUICK INFO: ⚠️ Just wanted to offer a quick warning on “The Trials of Gabriel Martinez,” which covers a case of EXTENSIVE child abuse..to the point that the child, the titular Gabriel Martinez, passed away due to his injuries, at age 8.⚠️
THE DEETS: While serving a VERY important purpose - in helping people to look for visible/psychological warning signs of child abuse, and reminding people JUST how important it is to say something - you may want to *PROCEED W/CAUTION.*
This is currently trending #2 on Netflix, so you may see it in your feed. Just a warning, after previously seeing people get upset over the violence in Netflix’s other recent offering, “Don’t F*ck With Cats.” There are many pictures/descriptions of what Gabriel endured. There’s also the aspect of #homophobia, based on the fact that he was tortured because his mother and her bf called him “gay,” for loving his gay uncle (& partner) that raised him.
You know yourselves best, but I just wanted to help you to make an informed decision on the show. This may be very triggering/upsetting for those that have experienced abuse, or that get very emotional about children. To me, it was a rough (but important) watch. If you’re a #teacher or #socialworker (or other mandated reporter), I think it’s important to at least be aware of the case.

PLATFORM: #Netflix
GENRES: Coming of Age/Teen, Comedy, Drama, Superhero, Based on a Book...this show is EVERYTHING!!👌🏻⭐️👍🏻
#IAmNotOkayWithThis...only being 7 episodes!!😭
QUICK INFO: This is a show that manages to meld ALL of the above genres (and probably more), SUCCESSFULLY!! Definitely a MUST-WATCH...you’re almost guaranteed to find yourself #bingewatching this in one sitting (as I did)!!
THE DEETS: Currently rated the #2 show on all of Netflix, “I Am Not Okay With This” - adapted from the graphic novels by #CharlesForsman - manages to have the perfect balance of appeal for both teens AND adults. It really lends itself to the angsty teen experience (remember that??) while also providing us with the action that many of us love in superhero-type shows.
I especially love that the show not only has a female protagonist - wish I could’ve found a promo picture better representing that - but that her character also provides some young LGBTQ representation, which is something still lacking on most platforms (think of the amount of heteronormative shows that teens/YA have access to, in comparison!). Coming from the producers of #StrangerThings, I think that if you’re a fan of Eleven & co., I think you’re almost guaranteed to also love this show!
Included below find 2 links...one to the trailer, and below that, a link to the first 7 minutes of the show, from Netflix (if you have some time on your hands!😎)
The trailer link:

PLATFORM: #Netflix
GENRES: Thriller, Drama, Crime TV Shows, Based on a Book
I was iffy on this for nearly 3 eps, but ready to give my 👍🏻 on “The Stranger!”
QUICK INFO: Based on the best-selling #HarlanCoben book, “The Stranger” takes a while to heat up, setting up the characters & premise...but it’s worth the wait! The tale follows the lives of those affected by the titular “stranger,” who wreaks havoc on people’s lives, by randomly approaching them with unwanted information about loved ones, & often blackmailing them to stay silent.
The show mostly centers around the affects on Richard Armitage’s character, Adam Price, whose wife goes missing...as well as the detectives involved in crimes going on in the local area. If you’re willing to wait about 2 1/2 episodes for things to start to come together, & enjoy action-packed chase scenes, give it a chance!
THE DEETS: After my experience with “Locke & Key,” I was afraid to give a recommendation on another slow-starter. But “The Stranger” is great for those that love crime-based thrillers, & are tired of the same old formulaic crime procedurals. If you enjoy crime-based programs, and have the patience to wait for a show to heat up, I’d definitely give this one a chance. It has a nice balance between police procedural (the scenes with the detectives), & drama/thriller (for the victims impacted by ‘the stranger’). There are also quite a few fun, action-packed chase scenes!
https://youtu.be/fwUWlxAQj-o
Released on 1/30, “The Stranger” didn’t make the February list, & I feel like it kind of fell through the Netflix promotion cracks. If you’re on the fence, here’s a link to the trailer:
PS- Still working on the Hulu arrivals after feeling a bit ill the past 2 days, but that’s the nature of being a #chronicallyill blogger! Keep streaming, y’all!! And don’t forget to follow my IG page & like my previous post (37?!?/FireStick), to enter to win that FREE Amazon Fire TV Stick! 📺

Pictured: My Venmo address (@StreamworthyTV, for any donations to keep the channel going), as well as some pics of me, both after and before before I got ill with physical disabilities (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, MCAS, POTS/dysautonomia) & psych issues (like depression, anxiety, & agoraphobia, after I was pushed from my job...shortly after I first showed up in my chair - despite having the highest performance rating possible).
WHAT IS @StreamworthyTV ALL ABOUT?
#StreamworthyTV is meant to be a free, quick resource, for all major streaming platforms. We cover #Netflix, #Hulu, #PrimeVideo, #DisneyPlus, & even #AppleTV. (Other platforms, like #Starz, & #HBO, may also be added, based on demand!)
WHAT DO I OFFER?
I see myself as a sort of #TVGuide for the most popular, relevant streaming platforms. I’ll let you know about #arrivals & #departures to each platform, while also providing other news/info, such as #renewals, #cancellations, & #recommendations. If I haven’t seen a show or movie, I do my best due diligence, researching IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, & box office numbers, to help factor in recommendations.
All news & updates are COLOR-CODED for your convenience, to help you quickly find what’s related to each platform. These colors were set as those most associated with the platform...so Netflix updates are outlined in red, Hulu in light green, PrimeVideo in blue, Disney+ in gold/yellow (since blue was already taken!), & AppleTV is in white or black, based on the image.
Info is also set up to be read quickly. Info on new shows is set up as follows:
PLATFORM:
GENRE(S):
QUICK INFO:
THE DEETS:
(Any links are at the bottom of a post.)
Starting off with the platform means that you don’t read all about a show you don’t have access to, & keeping the genre at the top also helps you find programming you’ll be interested in. The separation of “Quick Info” vs “The Deets” lets YOU decide just how much you want to read about a program, and if you want more detailed information, or not. And any links are conveniently found at the bottom of a post, just above any hashtags.
I will also be offering specially curated, cross-platform lists, such as the upcoming “Actor of the Week.” This will let you know where to find all of a popular actor or actress’ work, ACROSS platforms. For example, if you want to go on a #TomHanks binge, we’ll let you know where to find each of his movies that are available, across the major platforms. Then you can watch them all, or only watch what’s on the platform that you have...so every Hanks fan wins! (Hit up my comments or DMs to make any actor suggestions!!)
I will also have other curated lists (you’ll have to wait on those...#TopSecret!!). Plus, I’ll soon have some of these lists up on #YouTube, along with some reaction videos, some review videos on #hiddengems and #oddities that I’ve found, & some comedy clips on movies/shows I’ve found that were flat out #CRINGE AF!!
😱There will also be...FREE GIVEAWAYS!!😱
WHO IS BEHIND StreamworthyTV??
My name is Kelly, & I became disabled, physically and psychologically, over the past few years...the pic on the left is of me now, while the pic on the right was just a few short years ago, when I was capable of working and commuting long hours, and doing 10ks, & even a half-marathon! I’m a hard worker, but my conditions - #EhlersDanlosSyndrome, #MastCellActivationSyndrome, #POTSsyndrome/#dysautonomia, now require me to use a #powerchair.
Once I showed up to my last job in my chair, despite having a pristine record, and the highest rating possible - I was soon pushed out, via refusal to grant me #accessibility (after previously enduring #bullying & #discrimination for years, once it was known that I had health issues).
Because of the #trauma that I faced in how I was treated by my job, I was soon caught in a deep #depression, facing #anxiety, panic attacks, & #agoraphobia. These issues worsened my physical conditions, causing many flareups. My job found a way to make me lose 6/8 months of free insurance coverage I was to get from my union, after I tried to file a lawsuit. My health, not surprisingly, further spiraled out of control. I was too ill too work, and was in fact #bedbound for over 2 full years.
In working towards “making a comeback at life” I wanted to find - or CREATE - a job that fit within the parameters of what I could still do...watch TV, research things online, be a wiz at organization, make great art, & write well (all channel art & write-ups, unless stated otherwise, are my own!). Also, I have a hell of a sense of humor, that I can’t WAIT to share on #YouTube!! I have materials ready to set up, & several treatments (scripts) nearly or partially finished.
Plus, I love to help people, and to make things easier for them. I’m a proud #Aspie, & I know that this channel will be the most efficient way of finding all you need, about ALL THINGS STREAMING!! I just need a bit more time to finish setting up some templates and get into a groove, and after that, I’ll always have you on the cutting edge!
I’m eventually hoping that this is a success, that I can maybe even get a Patreon for!! But until then, you can decide if you’d like to help me continue to release content - which will ALWAYS be free - on my new Venmo account, @StreamworthyTV. This channel is a lot more work than some may realize, and all money donated will go towards things like my #healthinsurance, my #medications, durable medical equipment (like the upkeep of my powerchair), & towards funding professional training lessons for my #servicedogintraining, @TheWorkingWigglebutt.
Mikka has been owner-trained for the most part, to this point...& has an amazing sense of smell, with many natural alerting/medical response instincts. However, my agoraphobia & other health issues, as well as costs of training being too high, contributed to her not getting enough socialization. She already does several tasks for me at home, but could really use the training to learn more, & also to learn how to behave as a proper SD in public, so that she doesn’t need to remain as only an “at home” service dog. (I may post a video of her doing a fantastic medical response revival for me, when I’d only had her 4 months - in the future.) Mikka definitely has service dog potential, & at not quite 16 months, she still has time to make the changes that I need from her, in order for her to help me in public (and perhaps to make me feel safe enough to break me of my agoraphobia!)
In any case, thanks so much to anyone that has taken the time to read!! I look forward to helping you find what to watch, whether you can contribute financially, or just with like, follows, comments, & shares!! (And don’t worry, I won’t repeatedly bother you for 💰!) As always, happy streaming!!
Find me at @StreamworthyTV on:
-IG
-Twitter
-Tumblr (streamworthytv.tumblr.com), where I link to some of my extended info/reviews
-Facebook (fb.me/StreamworthyTV)
-Snapchat (I’m new to it, but should be fun!)
And, of course, on #Venmo, @StreamworthyTV, as pictured above.
YouTube is coming as soon as I finish filming some clips!!!

PLATFORM: #PrimeVideo
GENRES: #Thriller, #Action, #Drama, Based on True Events
I said that we cover all major #streaming platforms, & we do!! Here’s our first look at a Prime Video release that’s #comingsoon!
QUICK INFO: Dropping on 2/21, #Hunters is, to quote Prime’s description, “an epic conspiracy thriller, starring #AlPacino as the leader of a rag-tag group of Nazi hunters, in 1977 NYC.” The much-hyped show was even featured in a #SuperBowl commercial!! The ensemble cast also includes #JoshRadnor (#HIMYM), the inimitable #CarolKane, #LoganLerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the #PercyJackson series, #Fury), & #JerrikaHinton (#GreysAnatomy). A link to a trailer for the show can be found at the bottom of the post.
THE DEETS: Checking out what’s been released on this show so far, it definitely seems like one to check out. Al Pacino is still a powerhouse as an actor, & there’s also the fact that it’s coming to us via the brilliant #JordanPeele, who serves as an executive producer on the show.
#Vigilante #justice is something that is often exciting to watch on the small screen, with the interplay between the good guys, the bad guys, and the law (I.e., think of #Netflix’s Daredevil, or any of their other Defenders shows). But at the same time, one has to remember that this was actually based on true events, & I think that the realistic nature of that, interplaying with the Nazi history we’re all familiar with, will definitely amp up the drama of the show.
I’ve seen exciting documentaries on real-life #NaziHunters, such as famous investigator #StevenRambam, who have kept the cause going for decades...hunting down (and capturing!) wanted #Nazis, into the 21st century. While I’m looking forward to seeing how “Hunters” plays out in comparison to the real-life programs I’ve seen on this, I’m excited to check it out, just based on its own merit.

A COMPLETE listing of what’s leaving Hulu, as of February 29, 2020 (turn sideways for a better view, if you don’t have the Tumblr app):

Dennis the Menace Strikes Again (1998)
Exposed (2016)
Failure to Launch (2006)
Hamlet (1990)
Harry Brown (2009)
Heartbreakers (2001)
In Secret (2014)
Just Married (2003)
Knowing (2009)
Man on a Ledge (2012)
Nobody's Fool (1994)

Secretary (2002)
Set Up (2011)
Sorority Row (2009)
Transporter 2 (2005)
Uptown Girls (2003)
Wall Street (1987)
This list was not as deep as the list for #Netflix’s February departures by a MILE. However, I tried to research the list, to see what might even questionably be of note, based on cult status (#Airheads), the stars (#Hamlet stars #MelGibson & #GlennClose), & on ratings (#ABetterLife got an 85% fresh rating on #RottenTomatoes, while #NobodysFool, a late-era #PaulNewman movie, scored a 91%.)
The good news is that the additions for February, to be posted later, include some MUCH better offerings!!
Please follow me on FB, IG, Twitter and, soon, YouTube!! I research and wade through the info, and the actual shows, so you don’t have to!!

PLATFORM: #Hulu
Genre: #Comedy TV Series
SEASON 2 RELEASE DATE SET FOR #RAMY!!!
.
QUICK INFO: The AMAZING Hulu show, starring #RamyYoussef (right off a #GoldenGlobes win, for #bestactor in a musical or #comedy!) will be returning on May 29. The show tells the tale of the titular character’s journey to get his life on track, while also struggling with discovering who he truly is, at an older age (as seems to be common, if not the standard, nowadays!).
.
THE DEETS: What’s special about “Ramy” is how we get to see his experience through the lens of being an #Egyptian-American, and as a #Muslim. We see how his life has been shaped by growing up and living with profiling & stereotypes in a post-9/11 world, as well as his struggle to live up to the standards of parents that are first-generation immigrants. There’s also a focus on his self-imposed journey towards inner-discovery, as he works out how deep he can commit to living his faith, amidst the temptations of #American life. While these are heavy topics, “Ramy” covers them with an infectious sense of humor and wit. (I also love and appreciate the #inclusion of a relatable character with #disabilities, as I myself have #ehlersdanlossyndrome).
.
All 10 episodes of #season2 will be released at once, for your #bingewatching pleasure!! I breezed through season 1 of this show, so definitely check it out if you haven’t seen it yet!!
.
As a side note, stay tuned to this channel for my quick-guide to the Hulu #departures for the month, which will be leaving the platform on 2/29. Happy #streaming!!

PLATFORM: #AppleTV
GENRES: #Docuseries, #LGBTQhistory
AppleTV has new content!!😮 AND, it looks GOOD!!😲
QUICK INFO: AppleTV’s new 5-part LGBTQ docuseries, “Visible: Out on Television,” was just released today (2/14). The series will be “exploring the history of the American LGBTQ movement, through the lens of TV.” After seeing the trailer, I think that it’s the first AppleTV show that I actually feel compelled to try #streaming! The show will be combining archival footage with new interviews, while looking at LGBTQ characters, celebrities, & “coming out in the TV world.”
THE DEETS: Just saw the trailer for this this morning, and was actually surprised to just find out about it today! Being that it’s covering important, relevant topics about the #inclusion of a #marginalized community, I’m surprised that I haven’t seen trailers teasing the show previously!
The trailer shows several famous LGBTQ celebrities, including #EllenDegeneres, #AdamLambert, #LaverneCox, #AsiaKateDillon, #BillyPorter, #AndersonCooper, #NPH, & #Andy Cohen, as you hear snippets of their stories about coming up, & coming OUT, as actors & other entertainers. We hear about the rejection, homophobia, & deeply entrenched stereotypes that that they’ve faced (such as how many times that Billy Porter was told he was “too #flamboyant”).
We also see the revolutionary clip from #Showtime’s #Billions, where Asia Kate Dillon’s character #TaylorMason, the first #nonbinary character on television, enters boss #BobbyAxelrod’s office, to succinctly state their name, and their pronouns (they, theirs, & them), to which Bobby simply replies “okay,” with no reservations or judgment. (This is actually one of my favorite moments, as well as one of my favorite characters, on TV!)
Based on what I’ve seen and heard so far, this seems to be the real deal - a long overdue, mainstream show, for the benefit of the LGBTQ community, their allies, AND for people that can benefit from a better understanding of the LGBTQ community. Definitely look forward to watching this!! 📺🏳️‍🌈

PLATFORM: Hulu
GENRE: Comedy, Romantic Comedy
Hulu’s “High Fidelity” drops today (2/14)!!I’ve had this on my calendar ever since catching the trailer...who needs a valentine when you have ANY form of “High Fidelity” available??
QUICK INFO: The 10 episode comedy series stars Zoe Kravitz in the main role of Rob Brooks, a record store owner revisiting her past relationships, while living in a rapidly gentrifying area of Brooklyn (my own hometown!). Previously a male character (in both the Nick Hornby book, & the 2000 movie version, starring John Cusack), it should be quite interesting to see how both the gender-swap AND the location change are employed in this adaptation, as well as how this works in a series format.
THE DEETS: The movie version is DEFINITELY a cult favorite, beloved for the way that Cusack frequently breaks the fourth wall, while weaving together a story of his past relationships, in a manner that ties each retelling to the music & pop culture from the era of each relationship. Due to the cult status of the movie, the series has a lot to live up to.
Based on the trailer, we see that the series will be going for the same beloved breaking of the fourth wall, as Rob addresses us directly, to give us the lowdown on her life. Kravitz seems to be very comfortable with this method of acting in the trailer, though it can be MUCH harder to pull off then it seems (for a gold-standard example of the direct-address method, you can also check out PrimeVideo’s series “Fleabag,” in which Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays to the audience with phenom-level skill).
Having previously played smaller parts in “X-Men: First Class,” and then a larger role on HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” it will be interesting to see how Zoe Kravitz plays as a lead, especially in a role with such big shoes to fill. I have high hopes!!
Have you started “High Fidelity?” Drop your comments below, or join and discuss in the new “Streamworthy TV Group” on Facebook! (Just remember the cardinal rule...NO SPOILERS!)

“Ableism as Plot Device” in Netflix’s “Locke & Key”
So...as noted, I have a beef with Locke & Key, and the way certain characters were handled in the show (remember, this has nothing to do with the comic, which I haven’t seen...I have no idea if it’s fraught with the same problems).
I first watched the show as part of my Streamworthy TV venture (currently set up & being fleshed out on FB/IG/Twitter/Tumblr & Snapchat, with YouTube in progress...give me a follow, if you care to help someone AWESOME, that can’t work a traditional job...even part time). I myself am on the spectrum, and have mobility issues that require a chair often, due to EDS. So just putting it out there that people without these issues may not immediately have noticed the problems that I’ll be mentioning...but if you’ve seen the show, you’ll know what I’m talking about (you can also see my other, previous post on general crappiness, as well as LGBTQ issues, that are present in the show).
But this post will focus on ableism, and misrepresentation of neurodiversity and disability. (Please know that this is a PURPOSEFUL separation, as I don’t see my OWN Aspieness as a “disability,” but rather, an advantage. **I know that not all people may feel that way;** however, those of us that benefit from/appreciate the autistic aspects of ourselves ALSO have the right to not see autism as a “disability.” Autism is different for everyone, and thus it shouldn’t be forced into the box of “disability.” (Example: my hyperlexia from a young age served me VERY well with reading, writing papers, and test taking, for many, many years. But back to Locke & Key.)
The reason I brought up the above point was because, through the first season, L&K uses the “autism as disability only” angle, which many of us in the ASD community are used to seeing (and being annoyed by). And despite ZERO character development over the course of the series, I’ve seen “AUTISM AS PLOT DEVICE” employed THREE times, at LEAST. I was dragging through the show, annoyed at the portrayal and usage of the character, as well as a different character, who is wheelchair-using, and nonverbal. But suddenly the “realization of ableism” bolt hit me about the larger problems with the portrayals and usage of ASD here - and I got PISSED.
Maybe we have interests that may SEEM to others to “not be age appropriate” (...when, give me a break, how many NT adults/older teens love stories or movies from comics, or collect Funkos, or went hunting for Pokémon...? It’s NOT just us, y’all). Also, older kids CAN INDEED hang out with younger kids in a mentor-type way, without it being a situation of “welp, ASD = emotionally stunted, so character only hangs out with young child.” But those tropes aren’t enough.
We DON’T innocently extrapolate situations outside our head (in front of others!), ESPECIALLY if it breaks a safety rule we were told, i.e., “well, my mom said I’m not supposed to say if I’m home alone...but you’re a friend, so...no, she’s not here.” Before you tell me otherwise, keep this point in mind - if we have the ability to be home alone, SAFELY taking care of ourselves...then we wouldn’t slip like that. NOPE. If we DID, it wouldn’t BE safe for us to be home by ourselves.
As well, if we REALLY care about an item, we don’t let it go missing (the ASD character doesn’t, but someone else uses said character’s autism to blame for “needing to go looking for the toys he left behind, then got ‘upset’ about,” - also inferring a “meltdown” - every time she needs to go to someone’s else’s house). **If something is related to one of our SpIns (special interests), we DON’T MISPLACE THOSE ITEMS HAPHAZARDLY!!** I’ve been that way since I was a kid. Ugh!!! You also see someone destroy one of his treasured items, just to be cruel. This shows us how important the items are to the character...so he WOULDN’T be forgetting them.
So, we see a mother using tropes of her son’s autism, to manipulate herself into certain important areas/situations, more than once. That, and the fact that the character with ASD is able to let someone know they were home alone when a crime occurred (thus making the person that lives with them a suspect), because of their completely unrealistic, verbalized musing of “the ASD thought process”...mix it all in with the total lack of character development, and you come to the final conclusion:
“This character is only here as a plot device. They’ve been given zero character development, and have been shown JUST enough to ESTABLISH THAT THEY ARE NEURODIVERSE, and then are thereafter ONLY in ways that FURTHER THE PLOT...in ways that would only occur BECAUSE the character is neurodiverse.”
So yeah. This is lazy writing of the worst degree, and I’m more than a little annoyed. I’m sick and tired of “DISABILITY AS PROP OR PLOT DEVICE” (whether that disability is a assumed or not), as well as disabled or neurodiverse characters ONLY being shown as tropes. This does a disservice to not only the ASD community, but to society as a whole; people will expect us to act a certain way, and not be understanding of those that are “higher functioning” - for lack of a better term - than those that are portrayed on television. As well, it’s part of the reason why females with autism are still VASTLY under-diagnosed (as they can have VASTLY different presentation). Not only do people get used to seeing a particular suite of “symptoms,” which they equate to ALL people on the spectrum...but those shown in media are almost NEVER female.
I’m not sure if the comic is set up this way as well, and it’s just poorly executed on TV...but I’m peeved AF😡 There is also the poor acting/treatment of the wheelchair-using, institutionalized character, & how her being non-verbal is ALSO used to further the plot (yikes, my hands are shot...but I’ll get out what I can, here).
I’ve worked with MANY non-verbal children (it was actually my specialty, before physical & mental health issues of my own)...and I’ve also had my OWN bouts of being non-verbal, due to trauma/illness. On BOTH sides, I have always found a way to communicate. Even when my Dad was on a ventilator and life support (mostly for breathing/kidney function, due to sepsis...we sadly lost him a few weeks later), I was able to communicate with him...because, with my background, I saw that he was able to respond with the wiggling of a toe, or squeezing of a hand.
So the use of a non-verbal character that “can’t tell her important secrets,” as another necessary part of the plot, is just MORE lazy, insulting, ableist scriptwriting. The character is NOT catatonic, and is aware of what’s going on all around them; so, by what you see in all interactions with her, it makes you wonder what’s happening to her when she doesn’t have visitors. Is she just rolled into a back room, or off to the side, where no one gives her ANY adaptive equipment?
Any research would show that one with speech issues can build sentences with an eye-gaze machine, or even eye-gaze itself, with symbols. I’d like to think that in real life, a CENTER for those that are disabled, of all places(!!!), would have at least ONE of those machines, or some other means of communication, available.
This is another point that is sad for society at large to view, as it makes people think that they “shouldn’t bother with” people that are non-verbal, as there’s “no way” to let them be part of communication, besides the method used in the show (which I have used as well, but you would think this poor character would be getting SOME type help/services/etc!) It was just CRINGEWORTHY AF...I’m SO sick of shows/movies where someone needs to address someone thrown in the back of an institution alone, to rot (off the top of my head, I remember this from “Dark” on Netflix, as well as on “Orphan Black,” amongst others).
So...yea. I just wanted to post this, for if anyone asks for a link, or anyone stumbles across this, and themselves saw these issues, and got upset. Trust me - it wasn’t just you. This is a comic that was supposedly quite successful...the television adaptation of this could’ve been MUCH better. If there were tropes of other marginalized groups in the comic, you can be SURE that those would be righted for TV. But the ableist train keeping chugging right along, as more people than EVER claim to be “woke”🙄 YIKES.

Leave Netflix’s “Locke & Key” UNDER lock and key...for MANY reasons.
So...after FINALLY finishing #Netflix’s Locke & Key - I say “finally,” because it seemed to take FOREVER - I want to apologize for even KIND OF recommending this show on my FB/IG accounts (Tumblr was not yet up at that point). I mentioned that the show was slow to start, which is true - but as I continued to watch the show, I found that this was not just a “setting up the premise” issue. A pattern, throughout the entire series, is that there are whole periods of the show that seem to be filler - with characters that you’re not made to care about - while you wait for the “WOW, something’s happening!!” plot points to come up. I really got SO tired of waiting for this points (but wanted to fight through it, so you won’t have to!!).
And that’s not the only biggest problem (nor the biggest reason that I want to apologize for recommending this show!). There are many problems with stereotypes in this show, especially impacting people with differences (such as a character that is neurodiverse, & seemingly on the spectrum...as well as a non-verbal character that is in an asylum, that is only seen in a wheelchair).
These characters, and their differences/disabilities, are used SOLELY as plot devices in the show, in an insulting manner, with ZERO character development. As someone that’s both an Aspie AND a chair user, I found this to be both disappointing AND irresponsible. (I can make a separate post or video about WHY, for anyone that is interested.)
As well, without spoiling the storyline, I feel that certain parts of the show could ALSO be highly problematic for people that LGBTQ (particularly those that are trans, genderqueer/genderfluid, bi-gender, non-binary, agender, etc.). There are scenes, & comments, that illustrate a view that someone is a he or a she, based on trivial, stereotypical aspects of appearance. Being a he or a she DOES NOT simply boil down to changes in one’s jawline, facial structure, body type, etc. However, Locke & Key manages to boil gender down to these simple differences, and I found it to be ignorant, & perhaps more than a bit upsetting for some.
There are some scenes that may also be upsetting to people that are trans or genderfluid, as they may be upset or irritated not only by the above, but by how their OWN gender transition journeys compare to scenes related to the notion of “gender transition” employed on the show. (I’m not comparing them in a serious way, but referring to the changes one needs to apparently make to be called “he” or “she.”)
The issues with this show also extend to those that are non-binary or agender (many of whom are often misgendered as he or she - based on appearances or assumptions - when they are neither). For instance, after more than 90% of the series has passed, with ALL of these issues, a SIDE character uses the word “non-binary,” but this is AFTER trying “she/he/IT...non-binary...? I don’t what pronoun to use.” (Um...did they/them ever come to mind...?) It’s also, sadly, said in a way that’s meant to convey that this should be a humorous statement. There’s also an earlier reference to “he, or she, or whatever.” And THAT line, full of MASSIVE misunderstanding and assumption, is set up to be uttered by the neurodiverse character, seemingly so they can maybe blame it on figuring that “well, we figured someone ‘like that’ wouldn’t understand.” WOW. 🤦🏼‍♀️
So, again, my apologies for the show rec AND this long post. I’m new to this gig, & I wanted to share something current; & the premise for the show seemed to be really interesting, with endless ways for plots to twist & turn, via the keys. My full apologies on this. I had no idea that a show could POSSIBLY be this much of a letdown in terms of enjoyment, nor how insulting it could be to the neurodiverse, the disabled, & the LGBTQ community. TOTAL dumpster fire in terms of inclusivity/level of understanding. I’d definite leave “Locke & Key” UNDER lock and key. 🔐🤨
**NOTE: Please know that this channel is TYPICALLY meant for streaming-related news & entertainment, and is not meant to be in the business of policing shows. My goal is to let people know what’s new, what to catch before it’s gone, & what I’d recommend vs. what I’d avoid. Especially in terms of the upcoming YouTube channel, rating-type videos will be mostly for comical/satirical value, and I don’t want to give off a “harshing your buzz” vibe.
However, there was just TOO MUCH about this series that disservices/over-simplifies/misrepresents concepts related to the experience of SEVERAL marginalized groups. And that’s something that I needed to say, after initially telling people to give it a try - I like to admit when I make a mistake.
(If there IS anyone that’s interested on my views on marginalized groups being misrepresented, or used as a prop on TV...please DM me and let me know. Based on level of response, I’ll let you know if I’ll include it on the channel, or maybe add it to a channel that I had started a while back, to discuss my own life, & disabilities...I want to give you all whatever you want to see!!)
