Hiii I saw your post about Punk 57 and the main reason i liked it because it basically took me a day to read. I went in knowing it reads like a Wattpad fic so I kinda just didn't really deep dive into anything and just read it for what it is. I cringed and the spicy parts and kinda skipped over those. But Misha is basically every guy I've ever had a thing for soo idk kinda had a soft spot for him. Hated ryen she was the worst. Idk I wasn't obsessed it wasn't my favorite idk why it's being hyped on social media but i liked it probably would not read again. I gave it a 3/5 on goodreads

i think i understand liking misha to an extent? i agree, ryen is rather insufferable LMAO but i can understand having a soft spot for misha. i just think he was so unnecessarily mean for no real good reason if that makes sense. he also had no reason to string ryen along like that, i think he should have been up front from the start. could've avoided a LOT of the major plot point dilemmas.

and i agree, it took me about a day or a day and a half to read it as well. i think part of the issue for me was, like you said, it's written like a wattpad fanfic and had i known that, i probably would have been more patient and less scrutinizing with it. i don't think it lives up to the hype on social media; either that, or social media just isn't elaborating or reflecting better about what the book is and why they liked it, if they like it to embrace the cringe or whatever.

i didn't mind the spicy scenes that much, but there were definitely a few moments where it was... interesting to say the least hahah. i think i gave it a 2 when i first finished it because iirc i didn't mind the ending ( it's been a while though, i'm not sure if that was why or not or if the ending actually is good but i can't remember why else i rated it higher when i first finished it ) but i think i bumped it down to a 1.5 a few days later the more i thought about it.

i just felt like nothing really happened. it was like 300 pages of just vague plot and confusing characters and a really cool plot idea that just failed in execution. i mean the bullet point summary of pen pals for 7 years having a sudden fall out and then the trope of one of them knowing the other but not acting on it sounds so fucking cool and that's why i read it but something about the actual book and how it turned out just felt so... odd to me. i can't really place it.

i dunno. i think i should just admit that penelope douglas's writing style just doesn't agree with me for some reason. i liked credence well enough for it's characters; i LOVED kaleb, he's one of my favorite book characters ever as far as characters go, but i could never get over the plot and how it was all like... almost incest and they'd mention it every once in a while so it was sort of impossible to just forget about it. every scene with jake made my skin crawl. i feel like penelope is just rather overhyped in general for some reason.

i sort of want to read devil's night, have you read that series? i see people saying it's really good and that it's her best work, but after credence and punk 57 i'm... apprehensive at best hahah.

Hiei is such a fucking bastard!

(Spoilers for episodes 57 and 58! If you haven’t already seen those eps, scroll away! I will be talking about one specific fight during the dark tournament.)

So I’ve been rewatching YYH and I love the dark tournament as a whole and Yusuke vs Younger Toguro is the GOAT. I will stand by that till my dying breath.

But can we talk about Hiei vs Bui for a minute???

Cuz for basically the whole fight, Hiei is talking mad shit to Bui!

Bui is trying to cut this little shrimp down, his his giant, deadly axe, and all Hiei does for a hot minute is dodge and say something along the lines of

“I know I’m a small target but can you at least TRY to hit me please??”

This 4’10 flaming chihuahua is mouthing off to the 9 foot tall Dark Souls Boss monster.

And he’s having the time of his life!

People always think of Hiei as this overly serious guy with no sense of humor and is probably incapable of understanding/telling jokes

I refute that idea wholeheartedly!

I believe from the bottom of my soul that Hiei would laugh at a dark joke and people tripping in horror movies purely because the second be takes of his arm bandage to let out his Dragon of the Darkness Flame, he’s laughing at Bui, he’s taunting him, and he’s just over all being a little shit towards Bui

There’s even a point during the fight where he just lets Bui beat him up a bit

Hiei’s only reaction (in the dub) is “Nice…”

To which this is Bui’s immediate response

And again, Hiei just lets it happen.

Doesn’t dodge, doesn’t fight back, doesn’t react.

He just lets him “throw a tantrum like a toddler in a therapy session”, as Koto put it.

And once he does fight back, he wins almost effortlessly!

And then he low key struts like a peacock for a minute!

I know people interpret Hiei refusing to kill Bui off as a show of respect/character growth. I do too! But here’s the thing…in the dub specifically, it sounds like Hiei isn’t just refusing to kill him because he’d maybe like to fight him again at some point…he sounds like a punk teenager telling the loser he just beat the shit out of that he not only won, but won effortlessly and therefore he doesn’t have to listen to Bui at all.

Hell, for most of the fight, Hiei’s acting like he knew he was gonna win even before he stepped into the ring.

The only time he genuinely seemed surprised was when Bui redirected his dragon at him.

Hiei really said “I won from the start” and just dragged out the fight for 2 episodes cuz he wanted to 🤣

(MBTI headcanon cont.) I think your observation of Will's family's interest is super spot on, because guess what? Misha from Punk 57 has very similar personality with Em. He's a geek! Movies, things, music etc. i guess it really does run in the family. I remember Ryen always making fun of him about it. And yeah i agree about your take about Nightfall in general about the side characters drama and present interaction of willemmy too.

Also i think i dont elaborate the last part of willemmy's characteristics of "finishing doing something" really well. Thats my description that were related to their P and J types. Em would have a lot of things she wants to do, and prioritise what needs to be done, but if she completely lost interest, she wouldnt bat an eye to them anymore. (The more i think abiut it, the more she sounds like INTP). As long as its done, its done. But will, the J guy, coupled with curious mind, wouldnt have a linear timeline to his growth compared to everyone else beside him, but everytime he was shown an interest and want something, he sticks to it until the end, doesnt matter how painful or less worth it seems to anyone. He's a giver and caretaker, having this passion of loving others. Big heart guy. Yeah, ENFJ really suits him.

Adding to my two MBTI asks before and ohmygod!!! Architects are usually INTJ! Theyre usually the adventurous type too. I guess my observation from before about emmy being a P is rather more closely related to her individual personality being a P and her P nature in her most volatile personal decisions in general rather than being a J. But i can see why she would be an INTx with interchanging P or J type. And Misha is will's cousin from Punk57, forgot to mention this. And im so sorry for the spoiler if you havent read punk57 🙏🥺 And I agree about Alex, but I'm not sure myself what Alex's MBTI would be other than E and F because we werent really given much insights to her thoughts. We only see her through other characters' povs and Alex was known to be highly adaptable too so idk its because of her personality, her job, her circumstances etc. yk. But she IS adventurous, and i think thats partly why Aydin can get along with Emmy in a way, and Em with Alex, and Alex with Em, and them with Will. Because Im sure Micah's characterisation was really different than these 4, right? But i think Alex is more F than T though. Idk haha, cant say much about side characters that werent given much characterisation through their povs tbh. As for whether or not Emmy's MBTI was the product of her circumstances, that too, idk. I dont think much would change honestly. She was always a girl who loves to have fun and be adventurous, but nowhere was mentioned before that she thrives off of communication with others as much as Will. We were only told that she had no worries in the world when she was little, but no mention of with whom. So it can safe to say, she could be an E or still an I. I remember this because I noticed, she didnt have friends, not only because: she was scared that she was going to be in an abusive relationship, her brother would hurt them, the teenagers around her came from different backgrounds from her, they want different things than her at the same stage of life, so it was harder for her to relate to them, but also because she genuinely enjoy and feels recharged when she's just doing things alone. She wants to have friends, but it wasnt the utmost priority like Will or Alex. And when she wants to connect with others, she cant do casual relationships because it wasnt enough for her. As an E, thats why Will couldnt understand, but when you look at Emmys interactions, outside of what was already happening between her brother, her schoolmates and the town, she was just like that, and she loves it. She did needed a friend, but not the ones that are too invasive. So when it comes to the I E type, I dont think it would change much like her P and J functions. Her P and J functions were heavily influenced by her emotional state. And theyre turbulent. When it comes to her T function, maybe in her volatile or outburst of feeling, she couldve been an F. But that too didnt make much sense, because she was shown to actually LIKE to think, rather than just feel because p feelings didnt always give her the most thrill. We saw her having fun when she felt something intense, but there were a lot of thinking that accompanies those feelings. Even when she waned to fuck alex, or get will out of the jail, or dig out the cemetery, she was already making so much thinking in her head, and she had fun knowing the consequences or mysteries behind it. So safe to say, even when she goes over the edge, she CAN feel the most like Will, but unlike Will, that might just not be her dominant function.

(I have read Punk 57, so I’m familiar with Misha, and that all tracks.)

Don’t worry. It’s not you. I’m just overly dense sometimes. I might have unconsciously avoided it. As much as I read up on MBTI, my understanding has always been very surface level and understanding the individual functions and how they work in the stack is confusing for me, and at this point, I’m very rusty.  My explanations will be clunky, but I’ll try my best.

Starting off with Emory’s types, at first, I was leaning towards ISTJ, but I do see where you’re coming from with INTJ. I’m still struggling with her dominate function. Mainly because it is so difficult to tell what is the result of her abuse and what comes natural to her.

Em would have a lot of things she wants to do, and prioritise what needs to be done, but if she completely lost interest, she wouldnt bat an eye to them anymore.

When you say she would stop working on something once she lost interest, I would have to disagree with you. I see Emory as someone who follows through to complete what she’s started. I would point to her finishing the gazebo, even though she wasn’t interested in it anymore. I believe she quits things when her depression gets the best of her. She quit swimming because of the bruises, but she quit band only after her final fight with Will. I don’t remember if she gave a clear reason, or if her excuse was that she wouldn’t be getting a scholarship for it. However, I firmly believe she just couldn’t sit in the stands and watch his games anymore. She was angry and depressed, and that's what caused her to temporarily give up on things. Otherwise, even if she wasn’t going to get scholarships for swim or band, she would have completed them for the sake of it. I do believe she’s a “finish what you start” type of person.

Both ISTJs and INTJs are:

Planners/Organizers

Strong willed

Driven, with strong work ethic

Tendency towards perfectionism

Private

Struggle with emotions, theirs's and other's

Strong moral codes

To me, all of these traits match Emory pretty well. When looking at the differences between the traits, I would lean more towards INTJ. I think she has a dominate Ni. I do agree that Emory would have been an introvert either way.

As for Will, I’m still up in the air about whether he’s got a dominate Se or Ne function, though I’m leaning towards Se. Just based on surface level, I see him as an ESFP. Though I can definitely see why you’re leaning towards ENFJ.

I haven’t even begun to consider any of the other characters, but Alex is an extrovert, but whether she’s Te or Fe dominate, I’m not sure. Way out of my depth.

I wish I could go into more detail and actually narrow it down to a type for all the characters. I think that would be a fun project!

Hii Yesss, okay so I’m just gonna say eeeverything (but warning it’s not positive lmao) it’ll probably be a lot so I’ll put a readmore lol (also spoilers)

Okay idk where to start. So this is obviously fully my own fault but I misread the blurb (several times💀) and thought this was a wlw story and was a tiny bit disappointed when I realised it wasn’t lol but at the same time I was still really excited to read it bc I’d only heard good things and either way I thought the pen pal thing was super interesting and could be cute

Right from the start I didn’t like Misha like aren’t the male MCs supposed to be likeable and loveable in a romance book? Lmao. I guess he wasn’t bad but even before the thing with his sister happened I didn’t like him.

Then we met Ryen and I didn’t like her either. I mean most people wouldn’t like her at the beginning obviously but she’d been so horrible that by the time we found out why she’s the way she is, I didn’t care anymore 😭 also I think 18 is old enough to know better and not act like that.

Omg and generally age wise? There’s no reason for these people to be 18 and in high school. It’s like Euphoria in that way lmao. They should have been in college. I didn’t know whether to expect YA or New Adult and I still don’t know what it was because it’s clearly not YA because of all the sex but then why are they in high school? I didn’t really enjoy the smut bc it was weird knowing they’re barely legal. I’m not much older than them or anything but most people I knew when I was 18 (and actually it hasn’t changed much in the two years) were not having that type of sex lol (sure some people do and good for them lol but just make them older lol. This is a book adults are supposed to read so?). It was so so cringe to me when they were having sex on the library floor and in the car with their whole class right next to them omg.

And also about the sex, so I genuinely don’t mind the word slut during sex lol BUT NOT WHEN IT COMES OUT OF NOWHERE? If you haven’t talked about what you like during sex yet and the guy suddenly calls you a slut? 🚩🚩🚩 I mean Misha was generally a red flag tho, he was so aggressive and weird and I get he was heartbroken because of his sister but I just didn’t get him. and he was suddenly a criminal as well like idk he was such a ‘bad boy’ but like for no reason and he wasn’t even cool. He was just an annoying man (boy) who was very unlikeable and I didn’t see any character development? And yeah just very mean and aggressive towards Ryen. They definitely had sexual tension (although it kind of came out of nowhere too) but I never got why she would like him, especially before she knew who he really was. I get their history but I still didn’t believe that they actually liked each other romantically.

And for Ryen idk😭 I usually support women’s rights AND wrongs and sometimes I love a messy female protagonist but I just couldn’t like her, she was just a bully and so was Misha. And yeah she kiinda redeemed herself at the end but yeah by that point I just didn’t care. Also why did she have to be pregnant in the epilogue? It’s so random when authors put that in an epilogue it literally ruined the story even more lol. And like I said I would not believe that they’re still together after 5 years because they didn’t seem to actually like each other. I’d believe that they liked each other while they were still writing letters but irl I didn’t see a connection except a sexual one, especially because Ryen didn’t even know who he was for ages.

And just generally they were extremely immature all the time. And yeah they’re 18 but then it’s weird to see them fucking the whole time when they’re acting like (violent lwhejs) 14 year olds.

Okay now an important point. I would feel very differently about this if it was like a dark romance or not even romance at all lol. But as far as I can tell it’s apparently a romance book. But it just isn’t lol. There were hardly any romantic moments in it. It was a badly written dark high school erotica at best and if it was marketed as that genre, I still wouldn’t have liked it a lot but I would be a lot less disappointed lol and yeah I think selling it as a romance book is just not appropriate and telling anyone that that’s a healthy romantic relationship is just not right lol. (I mean I guess in the book it was never claimed that it’s a healthy relationship lol like of course the characters are toxic but they never stopped being toxic? Like there was a bit of character development in Ryen but Misha was nothing but an asshole to her and everyone else (except that guy Manny? I think that was his name lol. Only character I liked😭😭)

Omg also I just remembered the amount of times Ryen was in Misha’s lap and they were lowkey making out in the lunch hall😭😭😭 why would an adult write that lol. Also literally every single scene in the school was so so unrealistic and cringe lol. And if people really act that way in school, why has no adult done anything about it??? Lmao

It also definitely did not pass the bechdel test loool. I understand women can be mean and I’m not saying Ryen should be friends with Layla or whatever her name was but I would have loved to see at least one nice woman or healthy female friendship. Or reconnecting with her sister. I know there was one sentence about how her sister doesn’t hate her anymore or something but come on 😭 give us something 😭. I’m concerned for Ryen because Misha’s not good for her and she doesn’t even have a female friend to be honest with her about it. Yeah there was Delilah but that’s not what I mean obviously. With the whole fitting in theme etc I think it would have been so important for us to see Ryen connect with another woman or at least not be a pick me (she wasn’t a pick me generally I guess but in that regard she was). (Female) friendships can be even more important than a “romantic” relationship so just because she has her toxic unlikeable misogynistic bully boyfriend she inexplicably likes now, doesn’t mean she’s gonna be happy forever.

I really wanted to like this book and I’m genuinely happy for the people who do but I just can’t see the appeal shsksj

BUT at the same time I did read all of it (although I was tempted to dnf at many points😭) within two days which is fast for me so it couldn’t have been all bad lol.

Book Review: Punk 57 - Penelope Douglas (Potential Spoilers)

Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 - 4.5/5 Title: Punk 57 Author: Penelope Douglas

Description: Two people become pen-pals when they were children. They had been inseparable even though they hadn’t met each other. Something happens and Misha stops replying although there were many efforts from Ryen to get him to do so. When Misha appears at the school under a different name, he knows who Ryen is, but she has no clue who she is, and she’s different than she described herself through their letters. 

Reason for rating: I actually really loved this book and thought that it was really original and well put together. You don’t read books nowadays that have pen pal situations so that’s what really got me going. The first half of the book, amazing. It had me enthralled, I wanted to flip through every page and get through it really quickly, I had made up my mind that I loved the book at that point. I loved the premise of being pen pals and not seeing each other and then getting to know each other the old fashioned way. The ending was predictable which knocked it down a star, but other than that, it was a great book that kept me flipping through every page.

punk 57 review - not spoiler free, not positive. this is a rant so don't take it too seriously.

i hate tik tok for making me think this was a good book and im glad i didn't actually buy it.

we have the heroine who is really mean but not mean like the other girls because deep down she is a good person. like, you don't understand, all the other girls are mean just for the sake of being mean, but not her. she is not like other girls/kids. shes mean because she wants to fit in. all the other girls suck, the only people who support her are guys, because guys are less drama. her best friend sucks and sleeps with her boyfriend. her sister sucks and wants to sleep with her boyfriend. her boyfriends mum left him when he was 2 and she also protected her step son who is a sex offender. you know who is cool? her boyfriends sister. shes also dead. because god forbid we have (2) likable women in the same book. i think the bechdel test is kind of dumb and also the bare minimum but i have to mention that i dont think the book passes it.

the love interest makes it a point to mention how different she is every other page. no one gets them. they are a weird couple. its them against the world, ok? you just don't get it. so deep.

as for the writing, it's bad. i dont want to be too harsh cause i know that someone can read my fics and go "yours aint shit, either", but damn it this is a published book and i felt like i was reading a wattpad fic.

not only is the writing bad, the plot itself is bad and the writer really thinks she did something different. we have the rich bad boy who is in a band and the popular cheerleader who deep down is a good person. its not that different, but in her note in the end she makes it seem like it was really deep and unique. im sorry but i cringed. when i finished the book i wasnt sure if i wanted to mention how cliché it was but after seeing that authors note... i had to say something. its ok to use cliché tropes, you don't have to pretend it's something revolutionary.

the only redeemable quality was the sex scenes, but i did see some people call some of that harassment, although im not sure i agree with them. i also don't get how old the protagonists are, cause im pretty sure he mentioned his 18th birthday but theyre american and still in highschool???

I read "Shatter Me" by Tahereh Mafi on Saturday and it was pretty good. The main character, Juliette, is incapable of touching anyone because if she even rests a hand on someone's bare shoulder, she will kill them 😱. I was getting "The Hunger Games" vibes from it only in the sense of it being dystopian society controlled by The Reestablishment (said to be created to solve the world's problems but instead monopolizes resources so only the upper class & strongest can access them). The focus, I'd say, is it being a dystopian novel, but there's a decent romance aspect to it as well. This book is part of a series and I definitely want to keep reading to see what happens but that'll happen later on lol.

Next one is "Credence" by Penelope Douglas. Oh boy, I don't even know what to say about this one. It's 100% a spicy book but there's a build up to all the fun stuff. The plot is...questionable (some might say). And I'm gonna give some stuff away now: the main character, Tiernan, chooses to live with her step-uncle and step-cousins after the death of her two famous parents. She wants to get out of the spotlight on social media and wants a change of scenery so she goes to Colorado to live with a family she's never known. There's definitely sad and upsetting moments but it's a whirlwind. Read this book if you want smut with a plot.

After I finish the above book (probably today hehe), I'll start reading "Punk 57" also by Penelope Douglas. From the summary on the back of the book, it starts off with two people who have known each other only as penpals and have yet to see each other face-to-face.

Lastly, "Den of Vipers" by K.A. Knight. I started reading it a few months ago via a free pdf online (shh it's a secret 🤫) but I actually have the physical copy of the book...finally, so I'm gonna start from the beginning. I don't really know how to explain this one (It's smut with no plot). The main character's name is Roxy; the story starts off with her being sold to four mafia bosses: Kenzo, Ryder, Diesel, and Garrett (it's a reverse harem) who run the town they're in. Roxy starts off hating them (as she should because they're crazy, duh), but it changes over some time. And the book is told from all 5 of their perspectives, it just changes per chapter. Some characters are more insane than the others *cough cough* Diesel *cough cough* and there's definitely trigger warnings for blood/violence/torture. It's one heck of a book...all the smut.

The love hypothesis - this started as reylo fanfiction LMFAO and you can definitely tell the characters (adam and olive) are meant to be rey and kylo but this romance is everything to me. ita fake dating w a grumpy hero and a sunshine heroine except he's never grumpy towards her and is SUCH a simp. this made me melt and didn't have gratuitous sex in it, so if you want a sweet tropey romcom please please please. the sex scene it does have is like.......a religious experience though.

The off campus series - im just putting the series here bc its honestly binge worthy. Its about hockey players and their romances and its very tropey and very much giving the fantasy of reforming a manwhore and making him your malewife. my favorites are probably the first and third book bc the first deals with a himbo and the third deals with a pretty boy literally folding in half over some pussy. i adore this series and if you end up liking the author you can binge the spinoff series too! Dean is literally my boyfriend. The smut in this is...yeah.

People we meet on vacation - i blame this book for putting me on my friends to lovers shit atm. its an opposites attract romance and the main characters name is POPPY. anyway poppy is like springy and flirty and energetic and alex is the nerd who's like stingy and introverted but goes out of his comfort zone for her. It spans over years and flips between past and present. Not super smutty but HEAPS of sexual tension and chemistry and enough steam for there to be a payoff for all the pining they do.

The kiss quotient - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. WHATS NIT TO FUCKING ADORE HERE. amazing rep, not only poc rep but autism rep as well. The hero in this is absolutely one of my top book boyfriends. Hes just...hes just....hes just. Fucking. The most considerate, patient gentle and sexy ass man to exist gn. And hes also a sex worker so YAY for that rep as well. The sex in this......toes curling eyes rolling back when is it my turn

It ends with us - NOW THIS. okay so if you're new to romance and don't know colleen hoover, check for trigger warnings on all her books. this deals with domestic abuse and the romance i love in this book is NOT between the main character and her abuser. Lily and atlas have...the most gentle love story. It makes me cry. There is not much steam in this at all its more emotional and heavy bc of its topic but the romance that does develop is so tension filled and like....intimate. its my favorite book couple and one of my favorite books from her.

Maybe someday - ANOTHER coho book. Again check the triggers bc this one deals w cheating. But its fiction so idrc LMFAO. Its not a spoiler bc its literally in the synopsis but the two main characters Sydney and ridge have SO much chemistry its insane. Ridge has a gf and Sydney just got out of a relationship so they start out as friends and then it goes from there. I just....something about their chemistry. Also deaf representation bc ridge is death! This isn't smutty but it had one of the most tension filled scenes I've ever read without sex that had me blushing and clenching my thighs. It involves a pen that's all I'll say.

The Calloway sisters - this is a spinoff from another series but honestly i just skipped those and read this one because the romance intrigued me more. Its between rose and connor and when i tell you connor is deadass one of the sexiest men alive i mean it. His energy is unmatched. Unparalleled. U can't beat it hes so perfect its GROSS. its enemies to lovers but not really because connor is whipped and endeared by everything rose does and just likes to verbally spar with her. Very spicy. Very.

Punk 57 - my favorite romance to exist ever for ever. I base my fanon eren off misha. That's all i need to say. Misha is everything to me. This is the enemies to lovers angsty smutty drama filled romance of your dreams with the pretty popular girl and the outcast loner guy. I have the physical copy and have annotated all over it im obsessed. Also Penelope Douglas in general writes the hottest smut you will ever read. Its honestly not even a contest.

Birthday girl - yet another PD book i am just her biggest fan. This is an age gap with a girl falling for her boyfriends dad and.....uh huh. Uh huh. Surprisingly very sweet.

Now we're onto.....some...darker romance. These are romances that in general potray toxic relationships and are filled w smut and are just to fuel all your toxic fantasies LMFAO

The made series - the sweetest oblivion and the maddest obsessed specifically. Its a mafia romance so like. General warnings for that. Nico and elena in the first book make me want to throw myself into a pool i literally couldn't read this in public i love them so so much. Nico is my boyfriend. CHRISTIAN THO????? hes the hero of the second book and like.....if nico is my boyfriend than hes my husband. He is just......he literally has to go to therapy to reign in his obsession with his love interest and it doesn't work. Hes also russian. Goodnight.

The devils night series - this series is like. My biggest fantasy come to life. Four over privileged hot guys wanting revenge on their respective love interests. This is also from Penelope Douglas and. And. I CANNOT recommend her enough. She is my everything. The four horsemen (the main heros) are crack. I re-read this series every month. Michael is like...boyfriends older brother who you're obsessed with but he barely knows you exist trope. Kai is the level headed guy losing his cool over the girl hes in love with who makes him work for it trope. Damon is just the villian you're in love with and will is the popular boy in love with the nerd who doesn't give him the time of day. I have dreams about these characters that's how deeply obsessed i am with this series.

Give Me The Future is a tribute to humanity in a tech age and reflects on the strangeness of living through times that can feel like science fiction. Exploring both the opportunities of new technology and the dark side of lives lived online, it’s as playful and fun as it is thought-provoking, as dystopian as it is dancefloor-friendly, and as electronic as Bastille have ever been.

Eerily, songwriter Dan Smith came up with the idea pre-pandemic. The album was already underway and the band on hiatus from touring when the world shut down, forcing interaction solely through screens.

“Working on these songs in such an apocalyptic period, with everyone stuck at home, glued to screens, fed into the feeling that what is real and what is not has become pretty difficult to discern sometimes,” says Dan. “We’re in the age of deep fake, fake news and lying world leaders. But online, you can be anyone. What that does to our sense of self and to our relationships is huge, and it’s fascinating.”

Give Me The Future takes us into a sci-fi wonderland free from restrictions – each song a different danceable dreamscape, a place where you can travel back and forward in time to be anyone, do anything, and embrace a new wave of technology, which enables us to get lost inside our imagination. The album is laced with references to the world of science fiction film and literature, video games and VR.

It’s a record that takes the idea of the limitless possibilities of the future and journeys everywhere from a joyride of escapism on the uplifting “Thelma + Louise” – a tribute to the iconic feminist film on its 20th anniversary, to 80’s New York with the artist Keith Haring on the bright and whistling “Club 57”, to a hospital bed in Australia for the devastating but hopeful new single, “No Bad Days”. Co-directed for the first time by Smith, the music video for “No Bad Days” is set in a futuristic laboratory and sees Dan playing a character using technology to try and resurrect a lost loved one. Nodding to the classic science fiction of Metropolis, Ex Machina, and The Matrix, the video paints an emotional and intimate story—watch HERE.

“It’s really satisfying to have finally directed, and I’m really proud of the little film we made. I grew up with film as my main obsession, so this was a bit of a dream. I learned a shitload, and it was good to be challenged in a new way.”

You’ll hear disco basslines, orchestras of synths, guitars, futuristic gospel, spaceship sounds, euphoric strings, vocoders, talk boxes, a choir of roadies, and host of beats. The title track, “Give Me The Future” tips its hat to Phil Collins and The Police, “Shut Off The Lights” is a sonic love letter to Paul Simon’s Graceland, and “Stay Awake” nods to Daft Punk and Quincy Jones.

Having thrown themselves into co-writing for other artists in recent years, for the first time ever on a Bastille album, the band inched open the door to collaborators. Although primarily produced by Dan Smith and long-term production partner Mark Crew, the band also worked with a handful of writers and producers to expand the world. “Distorted Light Beam” was co-written and produced with Ryan Tedder (Adele, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift), who also helped as a sounding board and executive producer for the album. “Thelma + Louise,” “Stay Awake,” and “Back To The Future” were co-written with legendary songwriter Rami Yacoub (Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”, Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Album). They also worked with British writers Jonny Coffer, Plested, and Dan Priddy to bring the album to life.

You’ll also hear the voice of award-winning actor, musician, writer, creator, producer, director, and activist Riz Ahmed on a spell-binding and evocative spoken word piece called “Promises.” Riz’s piece was a response the album and brings its overarching themes into sharp focus.

Over the course of their previous three albums, Bastille have cemented a reputation for building whole worlds around their releases, often doing so with innovative, award-winning creativity. Give Me The Future is no different, this time accompanied by a fictional, but familiar, tech giant called Future Inc., the creators of an invention called “Futurescape”—a device which allows users to live out their dreams virtually. Sonically diverse and thematically adventurous, Bastille’s fourth album, Give Me The Future   pushes the band into exciting new frontiers. 1. the spanish love deception by elena armas

rating: ⭐⭐⭐

enjoyed this a lot! i'm not gonna lie, i did have pretty high expectations for it and was taken aback by how many stupid decisions our mc makes but ultimately, the third act conflict was very well handled in my opinion!

2. under the whispering door by t.j clune rating: ⭐⭐⭐

😐 after house in the cerulean sea, i was expecting to love this and would've certainly dnf'd this if it weren't a buddy read. the handling of grief was all over the place and while i did like hugo, what i came to conclusion is that klune really likes writing main characters who are quite mean and are enlightened upon the love interest's entrance and all of a sudden change all their ways and become a "good person".

3. you've reached sam by dustin thao

rating: ⭐⭐.5

this was the book club pick for the month for the late night book club. first of all, out main character is annoying. her whole relationship with sam is just her going "sam...". the story is quite repetitive and sometimes it felt like i was reading the same chapter twice. i was kind of disappointed especially because this was one of my anticipated reads for the year.

4. honey lemon soda vol. 1 by mayu murata

rating: ⭐⭐.5

lol. can you tell this month was off to a bad start? this was the pick for the host club for december. the art style in this?? stunning. that being said, our mc is the typical "not like other girls" girl who this really popular dude is hinted to have a crush on. your typical ya set up. our mc is the least popular, quiet girl and the dude challenges her to make a 100 friends for something in return (i don't remember what the "something" was so please bear with me). thank the lords that this was only 4 chapters long cause i could not bear the mc or the love interest. and don't get me started on the "oh my! he smells like honey lemon soda!!!"

5. wings of ebony by j.elle

rating: ⭐⭐⭐.25

this was a really strong debut! i loved the sisterly bond between our main character rue and her sister. the world building was kinda confusing at times and the back and forth dynamic of the two worlds (the gods and humans) was really interesting! i wish the world building had been a little more clear but other than that, it was solid book!

6. yolk by mary h.k. choi

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.75

before i start talking abut anything: I 👏 LOVE 👏 THE 👏 TW👏 PAGE 👏

no, seriously. the trigger warning page was phrased so well, i was afraid i was gonna start crying from the first page. choi's writing style is such a unique one. she describes people, not through adjectives but rather with thoughts through our mc. this was my first book from her and it is safe to say i will be on the lookout for more cause god did i love this. the book explores a complicated sibling relationship of two sisters when one of them gets diagnosed with cancer. really really enjoyed this!

7. punk 57 by penelope douglas

rating: ⭐⭐.25

now listen, i read this solely because of my friend because they absolutely loved this. i quite liked ryen as a character but misha? 😬

the whole needing to "fit in" with the other kids was relatable but the extent she went to fit in, i think was little too much. i didn't like the book mainly cause misha was lowkey a creep. not gonna lie, i liked him in the beginning; going on about how ryen was his muse and stuff. but once he like got to know her persona in school, i thought it was a dumb move to just judge her like that after reading all her letters about how hard she's tryna fit in. the epilogue was cute but all and all it really felt like the author was trying to make a really strong point and ended up failing.

this is the second book in the tiny pretty things duology. to summarise the first book, it'd be: psychotic ballerinas trying to kill each other to get to the top. i flew the first book and though i didn't remember everything that had happened in there, the second did a fantastic job too! it sort of recounted everything that had happened in the first book without being too repetitive and i really enjoyed it!

10. normal people by sally rooney

rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

first of all, i went into it unaware that it was marketed as a romance and when i first saw that it was being done so, i was quite surprised, honestly. to me, it just seemed like character studies of two fucked up individuals whose childhood trauma kinda made them do really dumb things and the "romance" being them hooking up multiple times throughout their lives. with that being said, i really enjoyed the writing. i love how by the time i finished the book, it felt like i knew the characters well enough for it feel as though they were a part of my life but they also felt just out of reach for me to actually know them. i hope to keep an eye out for sally rooney's other books and hopefully i have a clear head of thoughts when i do read it!
