FOTD #081 : shaggy ink cap! (coprinus comatus)

the shaggy ink cap (also called lawyer's wig or shaggy mane) is an inkcap fungus in the family agaricaceae. it is famous for its pitch-black spore-filled ink !! it is said to often grow in "unexpected" places, & has been recorded in south africa, europe, north america, aotearoa & australia. it is also carnivorous :-)

the big question : can i bite it?? yes !! the mushroom is edible when young / before deliquescence.

c. comatus description :

"the shaggy ink cap is easily recognizable from its almost cylindrical cap which initially covers most of its stem. the cap ranges from 4–8 cm (1+5⁄8–3+1⁄8 in) in width & 6–20 cm (2+3⁄8–7+7⁄8 in) in height. it is mostly white with shaggy scales, which are more pale brown at the apex. the free gills change rapidly from white to pink, then to black. it is deliquescent. the white & fairly thick stipe measures 6–40 cm (2–16 in) high by 1–2.5 cm (1⁄2–1 in) in diameter & has a loose ring near the bottom."

The deliquescence of Coprinus Comatus Gauche on paper. One day on a walk in mid October 2022, I noticed this curious growth, that looked as if it was melting. Obviously I had to learn what it was and paint it. So Shaggy Mane/Czernidłak kołpakowaty is an edible mushroom that just happens to melts itself as it ages, which starts within days after it appearing above the ground. The young mushroom must be quite tasty, as Polish Wikipedia gives a nice list of potential preparation methods. I suppose that could be due to it being a part of the Agaricaceae family (pieczarkowate), but then again Amanitas are also in this relation, so what do I know... Point is, it looks very interesting and very different on each day of observation.

Hi!! I’ve been looking for the name (informal and scientific) of a mushroom that ‘self-destructs’ after 24 hours into a black ooze (for the Language of Mushrooms book — hi that’s me!) and all I’m getting is a bunch of articles about psychedelic mushrooms??

IIRC it was white with a cylindrical cap. Would you happen to know what I mean? Thank you!!! 😊

i do believe i know what you mean - the famous mushroom that has a white stipe, cylindrical cap, & within 24 hours after picking (or after maturation) it turns completely into black ink.

Lawyer's wig inkcap / Shaggy mane inkcap (Coprinus comatus), photographs taken 24 hours apart

These beautiful fungi, like many in their family, deliquesce into a black, inky substance as they mature in order to release their spores.

They are a decent edible, but as there was only one, I decided to leave it and come back the next day after packing up our campsite to see its progress.
