Raising Hell
I watched that new Hellraiser and planned to write a proper review on it but i found myself at a loss. How does one “review” a Hellraiser film? How does someone objectively ascribe a recommendation to a film that is so very obviously sadistic for the sake of sadism? I once recommended seeing Neon Demon to all of my friends and they came back to me perturbed. The purveying consensus was one of disgust and indignation. I was judged for enjoying the film so much and i did not understand why. Neon Demon, to me, is a beautifully shot, character study, of a woman who betrays everything she is while chasing an ideal, a pursuit that eventually takes her life. I loved Neon Demon as much as Drive. The same kind of thing happened with Under the Skin, Annihilation and The VVitch. Cats look at me odd when i say these types of films are absolutely brilliant or bewilderingly gorgeous, a sentiment i hold for this new Hellraiser film.
I can find beauty in anything. I think there is an inherent allure to everything, including the macabre. It’s not always obvious but, to some, me, a semblance of enchantment can be carved out of the grim. There is a famous photo of a suicide called “Sleeping Beauty”. This picture is captured minutes after Evelyn McHale had thrown herself from the Empire State Building, crashing into a car below, coming to rest as if she just laid down for a nap. It’s an absolutely stunning picture but it is a picture of a dead woman. I can recognize both but one doesn’t diminish the other for me. I am a fan of Clive Barker and the cinematic interpretation of his Hellbound Heart. Doug Bradley brought a classic horror monstrosity to life. I loved the sadomasochistic edge those first few films had and, in all of the debauched pleasure, there was a certain, unnerving, beauty. The world of the Labyrinth was amazing to witness first hand. The leather bondage and flayed flesh outfits were a visual feast, even if they were horrific in presentation. Barker dreamed up horrors and captured them on film. For decades, this interpretation of the Cenobites ruled the day, until this adaption. While i enjoyed the look and feel of those old films, this new one is an objective piece of art.
The new Hellraiser adds color to these designs and i never in life thought that would do so much for the look of this film. Corridors and halls that were once covered in shadow and grime, have been replaced with art deco facades and golden accents. The puzzle Box appears to be the genesis of this film’s overall aesthetic and i love it. The Cenobites, themselves, have gone in a completely different direction, and I'm not just talking about Jamie Clayton’s take on Pinhead or, more accurately, Hell Priest. Gone, mostly, are the leather straps and weeping gashes. No, this time around the garb is made from actual flesh. The “clothes” the Cenobites wear, are tailored from their own skin! Absolutely brilliant! There are, of course, certain accents to these entities and their visages but, overall, they’re just wearing meat suits. In my head, reading the Hellbound Heart, this is how i thought the Cenobites would look. The extreme of pleasure and pain. Pure sensation, tainted by actual viscera and violence. I was absolutely taken aback by what Disney, through a now defunct Fox, allowed onscreen. This was a lot for the Mouse House and i appreciated the effort.
Would i recommend watching this new Hellraiser? Of course. It’s a solid watch with an interesting take on the lore. i Love what hey did with the puzzle box and Clayton’s take on Pinhead was perfect. It’s easily the most novella accurate interpretation of the Hell Priest we have to date. The overall narrative is a bit wonky but so was the first Hellraiser film from the Eighties. If this thing becomes a proper franchise, i can see a lot of these missteps being corrected. Most of the performances were decent but the characters, themselves, are forgettable. They feel like fodder for the Lament Configuration and i think that’s the best way to describe this movie as a whole. Hellraiser is an introduction and explanation to this new take on Barker’s world. It’s not his Helbound Heart but it is a Hellraiser and that should be more than enough for fans to take this thing in. Be warned, though, it is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of disturbing yet eerily sublime imagery in this film and that’s what hooked me.

Miraculous Holders’ Costumes - RANKED
#1 - Dragon Bug
Tumblr media
Dragon Bug’s design is the freaking epitome of asymetrical balance. Everything about this suit is both smooth and sharp. The curving stripes and spots give the impression of fire licking up her body, same with the flame-shaped horns in her hair. You can hardly go wrong with black, red, and gold. The upward-pointing hair accessories reflect her downward-pointing pigtails, adding more subtle balance, and I love the details on her mask.
#2 - Rena Rouge
Tumblr media
This design really suits Alya. The shape of the white front is both slimming and compliments her curves, and the black accents at her extremities are an excellent counterbalance to the white and orange. Also something about the coattails just completes Rena Rouge’s look! It’s the right shape too, because fox tails are on the bushier side, unlike cats and mice.
#3 - Chat Noir
Tumblr media
Chat Noir’s costume can be described as “black cat meets knight in shining armor but modern.” Let’s go from the head down. The change in hairstyle balances out his cat ears. His blond hair, green eyes, and gold bell are beautiful contrasts to the black suit, which has a subtle texture to the fabric. There are visible seams over his shoulders, arms, and torso that add visual interest to the design and makes his suit resemble armor - even more so with his boots and gauntlets. Those details are fantastic because black is extremely slimming and they give some emphasis to his shape. Between the ears, eyes, bell, claws, and tail, you could never mistake his aesthetic as anything but catlike.
#4 - Hawk Moth
Tumblr media
Do not tell me Hawk Moth’s costume isn’t sleek as hell. The monochrome works for him, the suit pairs well with his weapon being a staff, the overhead silver helmet-mask gives him a great villainous feel, and every pointy detail gives a sense of evil butterflies. I love that his miraculous is the focal point of his outfit, the light color contrast really draws the eye.
#5 - Snake Noir
Tumblr media
They definitely combined the best elements of the Chat costume and Aspik costume for Snake Noir. In a word, you can describe his design as “lithe.” The cyan pairs well with the green, especially because there’s a Chat Noir-green diamond on his chest. The snake elements are a bit subtler, with his head smooth, the design tapering down his body, the fangs on his mask, the scale texture on his suit and the lines running down his arms. It’s cohesive, elegant, and stark.
#6 - Bunnix
Tumblr media
I think Bunnix is meant to resemble a snowshoe hare. They didn’t give her a tail, but I think that’s what the little rounded ball accents are supposed to represent. The markings are bold and evenly distributed, making her look balanced and symmetrical. She actually has a vague vintage feel to her design: the white torso is reminiscent of a corset, which goes with the gloves, boots, and umbrella/parasol. Like Chat Noir, Alix’s hair makes a great contrast with the light blue and white. Also POCKETS.
#7 - Carapace
Tumblr media
I love how much Carapce emulates a turtle. His hood and cowl are shaped like a turtle beak and also hide his face, serving both to protect his identity and give the impression he can physically retreat into his costume. His shield looks like a shell, the designs on his hood look like common markings on turtles’ heads, and he has a tortoiseshell pattern on his chest and shield. Like Chat Noir, the lines of his suit give his arms and legs visual interest.
#8 - Queen Bee
Tumblr media
As much as I personally dislike the color yellow, Queen Bee’s costume has a straightforward elegance about it. Obviously the black and yellow stripes resemble a bumble bee but they’re also good for Chloe’s slender body type.. The black “neckline” and “gloves” are regal in flavor, suiting her moniker. You get a distinct bee impression from the sharpness of her stripes (a reminder of her stinging power), the black swirl around her hair, and the antennae-like hair ribbon.
#9 - Multimouse
Tumblr media
Multimouse is another example of a well-balanced and symmetrical design. It uses the reliable faux gloves and boots design with colors that go well together. Her buns and jump rope look like mouse ears and a tail. I have a suspicion the animators came up with it to easily combine with other miraculous powers, mainly by changing the color of the pink stripes post-unification. Overall, this costume is very cute. I won’t go over every permutation of the multimice combos since very little changes other than color.
#10 - Lady Noire
Tumblr media
Overall, Lady Noire’s suit is minimalist and elegant in a sharp, modern kind of way. Black is naturally slimming, and Marinette is already very slim, so the horizontal green accents help emphasize her curves. I don’t love the green lining of her ears, but I suppose that keeps the design consistent. I’m absolutely in love with Lady Noire’s braid (and I’d be remiss not to take the chance to point out this is the only time we see her hair properly black instead of blue). Her suit has a completely smooth texture, unlike both her Ladybug suit and Chat Noir’s, which I found odd and does’t do her petite frame any favors.
#11 - Mr. Bug
Tumblr media
I’m glad they gave Mr. Bug black panels on his sides. The full-cover spots of Ladybug is fine for Marinette, but Adrien has a bigger frame and it would just look ostentatious on him. This design emphasizes his shoulders and slims him down a bit. He actually looks like a football player (American football, don’t @ me about this). He ranks just below Lady Noire because of the hair.
#12 - Aspik
Tumblr media
OMG what a cutie pie. I can’t not say it - he looks like he’s wearing a corset in the left pic. Not a good or bad thing, I’m just saying. Look at this cutie pie! Aspik actually looks more snake-like than Viperion, imo: the design is sleeker and he’s got the diamonds over his head, that’s a nice touch. The snake scale pattern is a great detail. I had to step outside my own bias with this one because snakes really freak me out and so does Adrien without hair.
#13 - Jade Turtle
Tumblr media
He’s less turtle-y than Carapace, but I was pretty happy with the Jade Turtle costume. The Asian style obviously suits him, and it makes sense because he was originally from China, while many of the others would be more used to Western clothing at a young age. Fu has a tortoise-shell pattern on his hat and shoulder guards and his shoes look like turtle feet. However, His chest plate deviates from the turtle theme
#14 - Viperion
Tumblr media
My favorite parts of Viperion’s costume are his mask with the little snake fangs and the scale texture of the suit.As I mentioned above, it’s less snakey than Aspik’s. The lines suit his shape pretty well, but don’t taper down his body in the way a snake slims from chest to tail. I just feel like something’s missing from the outfit as a whole.
#15 - Ladybug
Tumblr media
There’s just...nothing all that special about Ladybug’s costume. The red and black do suit Marinette’s pink coloring and dark hair, and contrast with her blue eyes. The bright color and pattern emphasize Marinette’s curves pretty well and make her look a little bigger than her slim stature. All that said, the suit is both busy and plain somehow.
16 - Pegasus
Tumblr media
While I do love the hair, something about Pegasus’ costume is both too subtle and too over-the-top somehow at the same time. He has a lot of bells and whistles, though I suppose it’s supposed to look similar to horse tack. The winged shoes seem completely out of place. It’s not that I think he looks bad, but he doesn’t look particularly cool either.
#17 - Mayura
Tumblr media
The one sin of Mayura’s outfit is the giant slit up the skirt, but kwamis is it a sin. The colors all go together and the headpiece matches the hem, and it has a distinct cold-weather theme going on with the boots, fur collar and cuffs, and full coverage design. That gets negated by the slit, which exposes nearly all of her legs, something that works far better for a summer evening dress.
#18 - King Monkey/Roi Singe
Tumblr media
I’ve tried to figure out what it is about King Monkey’s costume that looks less than optimal, and I’m pretty sure it’s that it isn’t balanced well. He has large gloves, and elaborate crown and hairstyle, a thick collar, and a thick belt high up his waist. It makes him look kind of top-heavy. Similar to Pegasus, but to a greater extent, he’s washed out by the excess of neutral colors that the red doesn’t counteract very much.
#19 - Ryuko
Tumblr media
I expected the dragon outfit to be more exciting. Other than the tail design (and the horns???), there’s just nothing dragon-esque about this. Come on, Chat Noir got ears, claws, and a tail; Viperion and Snake Noir got little scale motifs all over and fangs on their masks; Multimouse got bun ears and a tail; Carapace got a shell and a beak; Rena Rouge also got ears and a tail on top of a design reminiscent of a fox’s fur markings. Imagine the awesome tail and claws and fire motifs we were deprived of with the dragon. The best parts of Ryuko’s design is the embellished mask, her reptile eyes, and the red/black/gold color scheme, which are pretty cool.

[Original Art by me]
‘Kurama-Hime’ - A wedding portrait of Mito Uzumaki, inspired by the Ukiyo-e school of Japanese art. More info & Original color version under the cut.
Ukiyo-e is a school of Japanese art that aims to capture the pleasures and wealth experienced by those of the upper-class in Japan. A major component of this art style lies within the clothing of the figures in the paintings or prints - often women who were seen as beautiful, Kabuki(performers such as Geisha), and famous actors, actresses, or courtesans. So, people seen as beautiful or stylish.
Ukiyo-e represents the final phase in the long evolution of Japanese genre painting. Drawing on earlier developments that had focused on human figures, ukiyo-e painters focused on enjoyable activities in landscape settings, shown close-up, with special attention to contemporary affairs and fashions. As artists chose subjects increasingly engaged in the delights of city life, their interest shifted to indoor activities. Article
So, this in combination with the style’s composition and the fact that, aesthetically, Ukiyo-e is one of my favorite art schools, I decided to try and emulate aspects of that concept when I created this piece.
Obviously the muse here is Mito Uzumaki, the wife of Hashirama Senju in the animated series Naruto. My reason for drawing her is not profound, it simply stemmed from my desire to paint a Japanese-style portrait arising in conjunction with my writing the scene of Hashirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki’s wedding for a fan-fiction work I’ve created. Yep.
This is not a traditional wedding portrait - as I said, all of these things are influences, which means that my actual painting is more a collage of styles than any one in particular. The most amount of detail went into her clothing and hair accessories. In the painting, Mito is dressed in a traditional wedding-style Furisode Kimono, distinguishable by its extremely long sleeves. In accordance with Shinto wedding tradition, rather than being a brightly-patterned kimono like what people tend to imagine, the Furisode is instead a white/pale base-color lined in a vibrant red hue. The defining, stand-out piece in the ensemble is a Maru Obi, the most formal and expensive type of Obi worn in traditional dress, which was popular for weddings during the Edo-period and Sengoku period; which corresponds to the periods at the time of and during her life before Mito Uzumaki married Hashirama Senju, respectively.
Additionally, her hair is superfluously ornamented with various flowers and Kanzashi hair pins - they are highly detailed(the painting was drawn on a 300ppi template) and you can zoom in to see the effort I put in. The hair pieces alone took me three days of work, while the entire body, kimono, and background took around two. This is in large part due to me not using a drawing pad; I suck at them, and am too impatient to learn, so I draw everything with a mouse and keyboard. I drew each of the flowers and pins individually, using real-world stock-image counterparts as references.
Other notable imagery in the background is of course the nine tails sprouting from behind Mito - she was the first Jinchuuriki of the Nine Tailed Demon-fox, Kurama in the Naruto series. Being an Uzumaki - whose clan ensignia can be seen in all of the red swirls scattered about, such as on the fan, and the fan-shaped Kanzashi - she has the two abilities that she uses to suppress and control Kurama:  adamantine chakra-chains, which can be seen in the foreground and extend into the background, to ‘wrap around’ Mito and the Fox, thus linking them together; and the five elements seal, a fuinjutsu technique used to seal the demon inside of someone. This seal is the weird symbols that surround her head, in front of the moon.
The Uzumaki clan hails from the Land of Whirlpools, and resides in a village on a small grouping of islands surrounded by ferocious seas. This is, obviously, characterized by all of the wave patterns, namely the one on her Obi that can be seen covering the visible back-portion of the Kimono. In my story, this Obi belonged to her late mother, a respected healer within the clan who died in service during a war. The two prominent camellia flowers - hot pink, sitting at the top center of the other flowers - are a pair of Kanzashi pins that belonged to her mother as well.  The camellia flower is said to represent different things in accordance to the color of the plant:
White camellias symbolize adoration and are given to someone who is well-liked.
Pink camellias symbolize a longing for someone and are given to someone who is missed.
Red camellias symbolize love, passion, and deep desire.
Since these particular pins represent both her mother, who is missed, and the new love she found prior to and within her union, I made them…red and pink. I also just like the gradient between red and pink, so it all works out. Last but not least, in the top-left background near the Kanji spelling of ‘Uzumaki Mito’, I drew a Double-crested Cormorant, which are representative of Nobility and Indulgence; in the manga (and in my story) her betrothed - Hashirama Senju - is the head of the Senju clan, one of the two most powerful in the land, as well as the first Hokage or village leader of Konohagakure.
Thus concludes the ‘major’ influences in this work of fan-art that I spent five days on after being inspired by my own fanfiction.
Here is the original color version:

Sly Cooper AU for Falco Lombardi and the Hot Rodders:
In other words, what if Falco and his old gang were part of that world and what their history would be.
Please keep in mind that most of this is coming from my HC discussions with @oroanillado and their interpretation of Sly Cooper and my personal interpretations of Falco Lombardi (x).
I was thinking about this question for a while and I pretty much wondered what place Falco would take in such a world. If I follow what bits we know of his history in Star Fox, he was never really a good citizen. Gang leader, always part of criminal activity before leaving. So it would make sense for him to be a boss in the Sly Cooper verse.
But he wouldn’t necessarily be a boss because he has a grudge against Cooper. It’d mostly be a fight by association. In fact, Falco would prefer to be left alone, same for his turf. Only problem is that the people he serves are the ones after Sly. So he might get tousled a bit. Let me explain.
Location: New York, Little Italy.
Age: 5 years younger than Sly Cooper.
Aesthetics: Back alleys of Little Italy, with pizzarias, apartment housings, a fuckton of garages and cars with clothes lines going back and forth between buildings. Antennas and chimneys on the building roofs and pots of flowers and spices from balconies on window sills.
Music style: Like this.
Occupation: Gang Leader of the Hot Rodders. His specialty is in automobiles. Grand theft, modding, hot rods, pulling cars apart, etc. He employs local mechanics and keeps his area safe by striking a deal with the mobsters/mafia where he will supply whatever they order as long as they keep out of his turf.
Most trusted: Katt Monroe (Big Sister of the gang), Kool (the Big Brother and Katt’s boyfriend), and both the Mouse and Crocodile from the original Hot Rodders gang (based on the Farewell, Beloved Falco mini manga). They’d be the mini bosses to the level, honestly. Each holds a key to getting closer to Falco. 8 in total.
Henchmen: Mostly the mechanics and drivers. All of them would be designed as family men and women and others. They aren’t fighters, but they do their best to protect the gang since the gang protects them and their families.
Reason why Sly would invade the area: More than likely Falco and his gang are unfortunately working for the wrong people (AKA, the actual villains of the story). And Sly would not be aware of this until he gets close to Falco.
Background: Interpol would have very little on him. No no elaborate background story would be shared at first. Instead Sly would have to gather what all he can while infiltration the turf area as someone that belongs there. Once about to defeat Falco in the main boss fight, his mother (Ruby Lombardi) will stop the fight and actually address the while situation. Story time? Yes, story time.
You see, the Lombardi family was once connected to the Cooper family since Bruce and Alyssa-Marie Cooper (Sly’s grandparents) as Arturo Lombardi (Falco’s grandfather) was their get away driver at the time--also an amazing racer back in the day in general. Most of his criminal activities were always done on off season. In fact, Ruby remembered seeing Sly as a toddler before she had to run away.
Ruby had unfortunately fallen in love with a Sicilian falcon named Cyril. He had posed as a simple man, nothing notable during heir affair until she got pregnant. So he finally revealed himself as the Don of a an incredibly powerful Mafia. At this point Arturo interferes and forbid his daughter to marry Cyril. Enraged by this, Cyril murders Arturo and Ruby flees after this. There is a possibility that the Cooper family knew where she fled too and Cyril facilitated many things for the Fiendish Five to murder the Cooper family in hopes that something would be discovered of Ruby’s location.
However nothing was and Cyril was left empty handed for now.
In other words, Falco is the heir to a large Mafia. Funnily enough, Falco hates the mafia. Which is why he keeps them away from his turf and also provides a safe location for anyone running away from certain organizations.
Note: Rok’s version of Sly was born in Italy, so most of the past occurred in Italy (which is perfect since Falco is American-Italian with the accent so this is perfect).
In the end of the level, Sly will actually have gained an ally with the possibility or question if he will betray Sly or not. Would he take on his father’s empire? Or would he remain the gang leader that protects others? Oh no.
Also a lot of this might change as I play more of the Sly Cooper games.
PS: I am also still writing out the review on SC1 so hopefully that’ll come out soon.

World Building June #3: Inhabitants of Okam
Tumblr media
Giants
The Giants are easily the largest race inhabiting Okam, with the average adult standing 10 to 13 feet tall. Native to The RimeLands and the North Lancefrost, Giants have very thick hair covering their bodies to protect them against the extreme cold. Despite their immense size, they are known for being a strikingly calm people who find the “small ones” to be a bit like hairless babies and little animals. They value the forged metals of other races, and will often trade a myriad of items for ore and metals. Their items of trade usually consist of furs, animal hides, bone sculptures, and treasures found amongst the ice and snow. Being as tall as the giants are they are certainly imposing, but the size comes at a price. To support their weight, they have very thick legs and elephant-like feet to distribute it. This tends to make Giants appear ponderous and slow as they lumber to whatever task awaits them next.
Tumblr media
Aeis
The colorful, reptilian Aeis are natives of the Aeis Reach. Standing about 5 feet tall, they find themselves uncontested for dominion over their mostly desert home and inhabit several kingdoms equal to the technological and cultural advancement of the Vul kingdoms. However, unlike many Vul kingdoms, they are very xenophobic of other intelligent creatures. Strangely, this doesn’t seem to be motivated out of “racial purity” or superiority, but fear. Only the most seasoned and stone-faced traders who begrudgingly venture to meet with Vul, Giants, or Midlins can resist showing a bit of fear around other races. It is possible this early ancestors didn’t have things very easy as they grew to inhabit their homeland, but immediate and open hostility seems to help mask their own fear of death. Despite this, Aeis have a very beautiful and aesthetic culture that blends the utilitarian with the artistic. Warriors and guards often carry macanas they decorate with feathers and prayer beads, citizens of any standing wear bracelets made of iron or tin, and highly decorated individuals adorn themselves in colorful fabrics and iron necklaces.
Tumblr media
Midlins
The Midlins are one of the more curious inhabitants of Okam, appearing very mouse or fox-like in appearance about 3 to 4 feet tall. They are well adapted for arboreal living amongst the mangrove swamps of the Arm of Emm. Midlins inhabit highly communal treehouse villages, where they fish, gather roots and fruit, and construct rafts and small boats fitting their small height. Midlins are oddly a very fearless bunch, treating much taller races that may even include the giants quite respectfully and almost like distant family. Perhaps a bit too much like family. Many tend to find this startlingly friendly behavior either charming or offputting, but it tends to make Midlins fast friends of others. Those less fond of Midlins see them like little furred gremlins, often taking things and leaving other unrelated objects in return. This isn’t due to a natural kleptomania, but because Midlins have no sense of property. It’s widely accepted for a Midlin to enter another’s home, borrow a fishing rod, and leave a pouch of spices in return. Many Midlin not well versed in Aeis or Vul culture tend to forget their societies don’t operate in the same fashion, often being branded as thieves over a simple misunderstanding.
Tumblr media
Urk
Known by many names: Urk, Men of Zamos, Scavengers, and Raiders, the Urk are a very enigmatic people. Standing about 5 to 6 feet tall with little of their face or body shown beneath their cloaks and patchwork clothing, Urk are know for a rather imposing disposition. They all but refuse to speak their native language to non-Urk, using a rough and gestural sign language to communicate with others. But even to those that regularly traverse their territory of Zamos, very little is known of their culture and society. Do not think them savage, though, as they show an acute understanding of mechanical parts and advanced machine objects. Using technology presumably acquired from Zameth ruins dotting the region, Urk have developed arquebus-like firearms that can be filled with a naturally forming gunpowder-like substance known as “flashsand” and loaded with rounded metal slugs or with arrows. They highly treasure these weapons, taking an offer to trade for one of their firearms as an open insult. What is known of their culture is they exist in a grouping of almost 100 or more family-based clans or tribes, and it is almost impossible to tell how a party of traveling Urk will react to outsiders.
Tumblr media
Vul
The most neumerous race of Okam, the Vul stand at 6 to 7 feet tall and can be found in large kingdoms spanning from the from the Midrealms to the Runefields. Perhaps having the most human-like kingdoms and appearance, Vul kingdoms are wide ranging and span many unique regions that give rise to their own distinct cultures. Regardless, one of the primary staples of their cultures is a value for art. This can range in many forms, from collecting the art of other races, wearing bright clothing with intricate designs, painting city walls and homes with paintings and designs, and so on. Stepping into a bustling Vul city is a beautiful sight, with every surface in reach being covered in murals and paintings. This gives rise to many sayings of “looking brighter than a town hall”. Vul make trade commonly with the Midlin and Giants, but occasionally with Urk and Aeis. Due to the commonality of interspecies trade, cities are seldom home to only Vul. Midlins and Aeis who enter their cities typically come out with paints and dyes covering their bodies as a sign of friendship and welcoming.
Tumblr media
The Zameth
The once ancient people from the darkness of the Obsidian Sea have all but vanished, leaving behind nothing but their cities, constructs, and strange technology. Judging most statues as being candidates for Zameth proportions, it is likely they stood roughly 8 to 10 feet tall and had scaly, armored bodies. They clearly did not evolve on Vulkur, as no record of their existence stands beyond what they have created. Many see them as a species of demigods, alien beings from another world, or even travelers among the great Obsidian Seas. What their intent for our world was is all but unknown, as much of their sealed ruins seem inaccessible. Their doors are heavy stone and have no handles, switches rely on large glassy orbs that must be rolled into active and inactive positions, and so on. It’s as if they used strange magic or their very wills to manipulate their cosmos.

Winx Club season 8/24
In which we get to the prize in this cereal box.
24 Dyamond on Ice
At last, at last, at last!  I have waited all season!  Squeeeeeeee!  And if it weren’t for Evergleam finding me a site to watch these on, just because she wanted to do something nice for me and read my episode reactions, I wouldn’t be watching now!  Evergleam, you are the greatest!
Ah, I’m so excited!
Ok, I kind of know what’s coming, and from what I‘ve heard it sounds… it sounds dumb.  So yes I am vibrating with excitement about something I will likely snark the heck out of once I see it.  But that’s the joy of fandom too, isn’t it?
Alfea!  Wizgiz and his Scottish voice!  Pop quiz nobody was prepared for!  Tec and Musa are not prepared.  Aisha says it isn’t fair.  Stella is more concerned with sneaking carrots from Flora’s snack basket.  Oh wait, no those are Stella’s snacks, perspective made it look like they were on Flora’s desk.
The test is, “Animal metamorphosymbiosis.  All you have to do is turn into an animal of your choice!”  Wizgiz poofs into a mouse, a dachshund and a hippo.  Girls are worried, except Stella who’s chowing down on carrots.  Is this a healthy eating PSA?
Bloom goes first and successfully poofs into a kitten the same red as her hair.  Aisha becomes a butterfly, Tecna a lamb, Musa a songbird and Flora a tiger.
Everyone runs away from the tiger, even though it’s talking with Flora’s voice.
Wizgiz smells a rat.  Stella is not what she seems!  It’s Kiko!  Stella poofed Kiko into a copy of herself so she could stay home and sketch fashion, which is what she’s doing when the girls get back, each carrying a pile of heavy books.
But let’s take a minute to ponder transformations.  Those are some random animals the girls picked!  Flora’s not the tigery sort and it seems like Aisha should have been an otter.  I also wonder if she was showing off; wouldn’t insects be harder than mammals, since you have to transform more?  I wonder what was going through the writers’ heads when they chose each girl’s animal, and what was going through the girls’ heads when they chose what animal to do!  maybe all it proves is that transformation is actually not effected by your personality even though it seems like it should be!
Anyway, the girls are mad.  So is Kiko.  I wanna see the scene where Stella bribed him to do it!  Hah!  Stella isn’t actually sketching fashions, she’s getting caught up on her homework.  ‘there’s so much to study!” she’s behind.
Tecna says that as punishment Wizgiz gave them all a lot of homework, so now they’ll have to study even more!  Hang on, that’s not fair!  The girls didn’t know Stella was cutting class, and Stella did manage a successful transformation after all!
Stella: I wish I was somewhere far away from here!”
The star case appears!  “If that is your wish young fairy, it shall soon be granted.  What you seek is a world frozen and battered a place where an ancient bond was shattered.  This realm is called Dyamond, to be precise.  Covered with crystal and mysterious ice.  There you will find the seventh star you’ve awaited, follow the secret of a sister separated.”
Stella: “Sister? Whose sister?”
“Whoever completes this final (hollar?  Haul?) will get the stars and keep them all.”  so whoever gets this last star will get the others. That’s handy!
Stella’s still curious about the secret of sisters but Bloom says one step at a time.
Nobody mentions Daphne.  If I hadn’t been spoiled my first thought would be Bloom and Daphne, they’re the sisters separated in Winx, and on the frozen planet Domino back in season one.  Definite parallels here!
Tecna pulls up Dyamond’s stats on her phone.  “It’s a world of crystal, and the surface is covered in magical ice.”  Cool looking planet, it has a… I don’t even know how to describe it.  Floaty geometric outer shell?  You’ll have to look at a picture.
Off we go!  We have to stay ahead of the Trix!
Cut to Icy’s grumpy face.  She’s watching with Darcy and Stormy.  Icy says, “Dyamond...” in a way you could tell the voice actress was trying for emotional while still doing Icy’s voice.
The other two are ready to go, to get there first.
Icy: “No.”
D&S: “No?”
Icy; “We’re not going to Dyamond.  It’s too dangerous.”
Stormy: “But we have a mission.  The last prime star is there.”
Icy: “So we’ll let the Winx risk it all and find it.  And once they get the star we’ll take it.”
disappointed Trix. Darcy wanted a trap, Stormy was hoping for some good old fisticuffs. I love you two, don’t ever change.
Icy: ‘We’ll stay here and track their movements in the dark hologram.  That is all.”
Oh, it has a name. Heh.
Valtor floats dramatically down from the ceiling and reminds his minions of their place.  Icy actually looks scared!  Valtor asks what she’s afraid of.
Icy: ‘I’m afraid of nothing.”
Valtor orders her off to Dyamond then.  Icy clenches her fists.  Valtor makes the mark glow on the Trix’s hands and reminds them he can dump them back in limbo anytime.  Valtor’s voice actor is having so much fun.
Icy bows and says, “As you wish.”  but when the three go to fly out Icy tells her sisters to go on without her, that she’ll catch up.  Darcy and Stormy shrug and fly away.
Alone, Icy lands on the balcony of the asteroid and finally makes that thoughtful face I’ve been watching for for half the season.  She summons a sphere of glass with a lavender crystal flower in it.  Sad music plays. “Dyamond… how long… it’s not meant to be like that!  The timing’s all wrong.”  sad music and the winds of outer space blowing Icy’s hair and her cape.
Well that was sudden!  Also, “timing’s all wrong’… did Icy have a plan? Dare I get my hopes up that there will be an explanation for why all this was never hinted at for seven whole seasons plus all of this one up until right now?
Back to Alfea!  The Winx are ready to leave, after they make sure Stella is the genuine article.  But then Sky arrives in a new ship, the “single seater Crow.”  I like the design, reminds me of a sled.  Sky is bummed that he got here just as Bloom’s off on another mission.  He has tickets for the Technomagic arena for tonight!  But his date might not be back in time.
The girls leave to save the universe.
Disappointed Sky: ‘Sorry… wait, what am I saying sorry for?  Well if there’s no other way to see you tonight, I’ll go with you!”
Dyamond from space! I like.
Winxboarding over cool waves of ice, as if a stormy ocean froze all at once.  Good music.
Tec’s still looking for information.  “Bloom, I haven’t  found much information about Dyamond, only it was once pretty populated.”
They see the remains of buildings under the ice.
Bloom: ‘It looks totally deserted now.”
Flora: “Something serious happened here.”
Stella: “Someone left the fridge open?”
Again, no mention that the same thing happened to Domino so the Three Ancestors or a similar type of being could be the cause here.
And with nothing but crystal and ice as far as the eye can see there’s no hint at where the prime star might be hiding.  The music turns sad as the girls board past broken buildings and these giant totem-pole type things.  The girls wonder what happened to the people who lived here. Long scene of destruction.
Bloom: “A deserted world… no life at all.  it’s a real mystery.”
Which gives me plotbunnies because there must be people who investigate magical disasters like this.
Through the ice we see crystal flowers like the one Icy had growing on a tree.  More good sad music.
A sign of life!  A little creature!  Stella thinks it could be a sprite or an animal. Tecna says it means there must still be life on Dyamond.  Bloom asks Flora if she can talk to the trees.  Flora does this light-up-pink spell, and the other Winx are impressed but Flora can’t sense anything.  She says the trees are asleep.
It’s a white fox. After it!  Through very cool frozen thorn plants.  Interesting conversation, Bloom is surprised the fox is running away and Tecna agrees.  Flora wonders what the little critter must have gone through and Aisha says she wouldn’t want to stay on this planet.
The fox makes the giant thorn bushes break apart and collapse, and the Winx have to board away or be squished.  They escape and look down to see the fox glaring at them.
Bloom can tell something is up, but she doesn’t know what.
The Trix are here, all together again.  Darcy and Stormy are ready to find the Winx and battle.  ‘this place is so boring!  Give me something to hit with my lightning.”
I dunno, I’d think the ‘Total destruction’ aesthetic would appeal to witches!
Stormy sees the white fox and thinks it would be a good target for lightning!  She strikes a pose, ready to throw lightning when Icy ices her hand. Stormy and her suddenly heavy hand fall to the ground.
Stormy: “Icy, what’s your problem?”
Icy: “Leave that fox alone!”
Darcy and Stormy look at each other in confusion.
The fox comes up to them and Icy looks down at it with a tragic expression.
And… flashback!
Silver-haired moppet in funny shorts skipping over a pile of pink crystals towards a river and a crystal-flower tree.  Blonde girl following worriedly. They’ve found a mother fox with three cubs.
They look royalty. they’re both wearing really pretty very detailed peacock blue clothes, the younger girl in weird short-shorts and the older in a gown.  The older girl has frizzy yellow hair tied up in an elaborate style with a bunch of braids and a many-layered bead crown.  The younger girl has masses of wavy silver hair up in a singly ponytail, and she’s wearing funny shorts with leggings underneath.  she’s much the braver of the two, clearly dragged her big sister out here.
Silver runs around with the foxes while her sister makes a crown of crystal flowers that have fallen from the tree.  They cute-hug.
Back in the present Darcy says their mission is more important than the fox.  Go find that prime star!
Back with the Winx, they’re boarding along when the star case appears then vanishes again.  Guess we must be in the right place!  The girls walk along what seems to be the traditional “narrow path along a steep cliff” which seems like exactly the place for using winxboards, but ok.  The path threatens to crumble beneath their feet.  The fox seems to be on a higher path, shadowing the Winx.  she’s also in danger of crumbling ice-path.
We get a wider view, the Winx are walking up a path around a mountain that is basically buried under a huge frozen waterfall.  We see this because it’s what the Trix see as they watch from afar.  Darcy and Stormy are again keen to fight, but Icy sees that the fox is following and tells them to wait.  Stormy calls her out again, ‘What’s wrong with you?” but Icy blusters, ‘I’ll decide when it’s time to strike!
This is feeling really tragic suddenly.  The three of them have been always together for YEARS and had so many evil adventures but they don’t trust each other at all.  Icy can’t trust her sisters not to jump all over even as small a sign of weakness as, “There’s stuff, ok?  Don’t hurt the fox.”
Winx walk along path/semi-cave.  Fox watches.
Stormy: “I’ve had enough of your floundering, Icy!”  she shoves Icy and blasts lightning at the mountain.  Icy yells, ‘No!”
Avalanche!  Winx run for it!
Icy panics. “What have you done!  what have you done!”  Stormy looks concerned suddenly, seeing Icy freaking out this much.
They see the fox crying in the midst of the avalanche.
Incoming big damn hero!  Sky lands and immediately rescues the fox.  He chatters happily about how he’ll take the fox to Bloom, ‘I’m sure you’ll like her, and you’ll have Kiko to play with.”
This is possibly the most likeable moment Sky has had all season.  I just love it.
Icy still in a panic attacks Sky.  She ices his suit wings and sends an avalanche to crush his scout ship, sending it crashing through the ice into water down below.  (And having played Subnautica Below Zero, I know all about the fish in that water!)
The Winx watch in horror and Bloom goes to help Sky, who is by now hanging off the cliff with his suit wings frozen.
Bloom: “Sky, you should not be here!”
Sky: “I agree, but can we talk about this later!”
Two likeable Sky moments!
Icy goes in for the kill!  She sends tons of ice crashing down on Sky, sending him down to join his ship in the water.  Yikes!
Sad music again, Icy hovers holding the fox in her arms.  She flies away, leaving the confused Darcy and Stormy to follow after her.
Bloom: “Magic Winx, Sirenix!”
Oh my gosh Crystal Sirenix is beautiful.  I knew it was, I have pictures, but… it really is.  Love the crystal headdresses.  Love the way it takes from the original “gothic sirenix” design, incorporating the long skirts that eventually ended up in harmonix with the scale leggings. Everyone’s in their correct colors.  Of course Aisha’s teal and purple is my favorite but Bloom’s almost-no-pink is also looking good.
And they comment on it!  “Our Sirenix form is different!  what happened?”  Tecna says, “It’s Crystal sirenix!  Our powers are reacting to the magical ice, to protect us.”
They immediately dive down to find Sky, and discover that they glow in the dark water! Tecna says their Crystal Sirenix “has a high degree of adaptability.”  It’ll do whatever they need, that’s cool.  But it does muddy up… well, I thought of Sirenix as being a transformation that exists for the purpose of protecting the Infinite Ocean, so how many past Sirenix fairies would have to deal with magical ice?  Maybe the adaptability wasn’t a known thing, it’s just… magic.  Since magic does everything by magic, you don’t know what else it might do.
And that’s all! Whew, what an episode!
So Icy’s backstory is… Bloom’s backstory.  Writers just went, “Well this was a hit the first time, let’s use it again!”  Or, since I want to believe the best of these writers even when they make it really hard, the writers thought it would be cool to have the main hero and main villain’s stories mirror each other.  Bloom and Icy have suffered similar things, being torn from a beloved sister and had their world frozen, then each of them went to school and ended up with close friends.  But they ended up as two very different people, which I think we can put down to Bloom being young enough that she didn’t remember Domino and then she ended up with super loving parents while Icy ended up with nobody until she got to cloud Tower and met her roommates who told her the legend of the three Ancestral witches...

Rai tries to explain the furry fandom for non-furries for the 24963569356586th time because I have no life~
I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir posting this here, I just still often see people in the general internet being confused about or flat out wrong about what furries are and why we like the things we like. So here I go again, taking my frustrations out by making a long-winded tumblr post about it. But hey, if you’re confused by furries or know someone who is, maybe this will help idfk
Just be warned I am an ADHD motherfucker and there will be about 10x more words than necessary.
To start, What Are Furries?
Furries are simply self-identified fans of anthropomorphic animal characters. That is, a character that is an animal, but with many human characteristics. This can include speaking human language, human-like facial expressions, walking upright in a human-like way, wearing clothes, etc. Examples of anthropomorphic (or anthro for short) characters include Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog, Disney’s animated Robin Hood, Zootopia, and Beastars. All things in which the “animal” characters behave and express themselves like humans. Even movies like The Lion King and Balto have what would be considered “antho” characters, due to their capacity for human thought, speech, and facial expressions, though they would be in a subcategory often referred to as “feral” or sometimes “non-morphic” in which the character still moves and behaves largely like an animal.
So to reiterate, a furry is simply a self-proclaimed fan of anthro animal characters.
Why Anthro Animals?
I mean the obvious answer is, because it’s fun. It can be really fun and get one’s creative juices flowing trying to figure out how to blend human and animal characteristics. It’s an animal that moves and acts like a human. In what ways is it like a person, and what ways is it still an animal? Popular media like Zootopia and Beastars address that question as major plot points and worldbuilding elements. But it can also be fun to think about just when creating your own characters. And aside from just figuring out how to blend characteristics, the animal aspects of a character can offer more options of expression. Ears can perk up, droop, or fold back, tails can wag, lash, or tuck between legs, growling, hissing, etc. People often use expressions comparing human behavior and emotions to animals. You ever find yourself so happy or exited you think “If I was a dog my tail would be wagging!”
And aside from being an interesting concept to think about, sometimes it’s just aesthetically pleasing.
What is a “fursona”?
Fursona is short for “furry persona”. A BIG BIG part of the fandom is original characters. If you look at a furry art website you might see some art of Judy Hops, Legoshi, Sonic, etc. But mostly you’ll see original characters. They tend to be the main focus of the fandom. Because all the things mentioned above are fun to play with, and the fandom is big on creativity and self-expression. And what good is self-expression if you don’t use it to express... yourself?  A fursona is an anthro animal representation of oneself. Basically “Me, but an [animal].” These can be an accurate representation of oneself (example: someone who is short and meek and skittish might make a mouse fursona) or a more idealized version of who you want to be (example: same short meek skittish person might instead make a lion fursona because they wish they could be more confident, strong, and outgoing). Some people even make multiple fursonas to represent different aspects of themselves (Think Thomas Sanders’ “Sanders Sides” but with fur). In the fandom, your fursona is also often how you represent yourself to others. In real life there are aspects of your appearance you can’t control, or that can be very hard to control. Your height, weight, bone structure, etc. But online as a furry, you can look like anything you want. This is also a very attractive concept to trans folk and queer people in general, which may explain why there’s such a high percentage of queer furries compared to the general population.
What is a Fursuit and Why do People Wear Them?
A fursuit is simply a costume made to look like a furry character. it is pretty much no different from cosplaying comic, anime, or video game characters, except that most of the time fursuits are of original characters instead of pre-existing ones. People wear them for fun and self-expression, just like any other costume. They differ from mascot suits in that they tend to be of higher quality, and more form-fitting and expressive. Fake furries are usually pretty easy to spot on TV because they usually end up in cheap Easter bunny costumes.
While “fursuiters” are often the “face” of the fandom to outsiders, most furries don’t actually own a fursuit. They are expensive, cumbersome, take work to maintain, and don’t always play nice with certain health conditions and phobias. I personally am apprehensive about getting one because I worry I’ll have difficulty breathing, and I easily overheat. Others simply don’t see the appeal of dressing up.
Do Furries Think They Are Animals?
Generally speaking: No. People often mix up furries with a subset of otherkin known as Therians. Otherkin are people who believe themselves to be in some way non-human, usually spiritually or mentally a non-human creature. Therians in particular believe themselves to be in some way a non-human animal.  Furries are on the other hand, as I said, just fans of anthro characters. While there are likely furries who are also therians, most are not.
People who approach furry conventions to yell “You know you’re not really an animal!” at the fursuiters is about the equivalent of going to an anime convention and shouting “You know you’re not really Naruto!” at the cosplayers.
Is Being a Furry a Big Part of a Person’s Life?
It varies, just like any other fandom. Take anime for example. Some people just watch it and maybe talk to their friends about it and that’s it. Others might go online to view fanart and read fanfic, even go to conventions. And some people fill every aspect of their life that they can with it, filling their home with merch, getting tattoos, even building careers like being a youtuber around it. The same goes for furries. For some people it never goes beyond consuming media and art, while for others it plays a big part in their day to day life.
Is it a Sex Thing? (VERY ADULT AND SENSITIVE CONTENT BELOW THIS POINT)
I won’t beat around the bush here. There IS a sexual side to the fandom, just like any other fandom. Any anime, comic, video game, TV show, book, there is a sexual side to its fandom. Furries are no different. Just like it’s easy to find anime porn, it’s easy to find furry porn. People be making porn, idk what to tell you.
“Isn’t that zoophilia?”
Some people seem to feel that way about it, but no, not really. The thing that differentiates furry porn from watching two dogs hump at the park is that the characters are anthro. They think and express themselves like people, and fans relate to them as they would with human characters.
This
Tumblr media
is in no way the same as this
Tumblr media
“Do people have sex in fursuits?”
Generally, no, for various reasons. 1. They are expensive and take work to maintain and keep clean, and you don’t want to get various fluids on them. 2. They can be cumbersome and get really hot and stuffy, not ideal. 3. They just aren’t made for it. They don’t usually offer access to ones’ genitals, and thus having sex in them would be rather difficult.
There ARE some people who will get suits specially made for having sex in, with holes in all the necessary places, but you’re not likely to see those out in public. Generally if you see someone walking around in public in a fursuit, you can rest assured it’s probably not been used for sex.
“Ugh but that’s weird!”
I mean, people dress up and roleplay characters during sex all the time. Is dressing up as Krystal the Fox all that different from dressing up as Harley Quinn? And anyway, what does it matter to you what consenting adults get up to in the privacy of their own bedroom? Maybe don’t think too hard about other peoples’ sex lives.
And despite the availability of furry porn, it is not all there is to the fandom, and not everyone participates in that part of it. Heck, there are a lot of minors in the fandom, I was a tween when I was introduced to it, and the only times I was exposed to porn was when haters would “raid” our forums and spam it at us while calling US perverts, all the while being told “Hey, there are kids here!” But no we’re totally the sex-crazed perverts here right?
“I’ve Heard About Furries Who Are Bad People”
Yeah, you probably have. It’s a big fandom and inevitably some of the people in it will do bad things. Again, it’s the same for every fandom. You take any percentage of the human population, you’re going to get a few bad ones. Actual zoophiles, pedophiles, rapists, abusers. If they exist in the general population they’re going to exist in the fandom. But generally when their actions are brought to light they are driven out of our spaces, as with most fandom spaces. No group is perfect and without its bad eggs, but most of us work to keep our spaces safe.
In the end, people looking at a group from the outside tend to only see the loudest, weirdest, most outrageous members, and assume that’s what the whole group is.
