Finding out how he was born and how Lilia, the one who hatched him from such love and sacrifice, got "thanked" for it, must be such a huge slap in the face for Malleus. Lilia is the only parent he's ever known, the person closest to him - he was the one who hatched him when his grandmother just couldn't. He gave up so much for him, but in return received only scorn. Malleus would have died before he was even born without Lilia, yet blind hate and bigotry ensured he never got even a hint of thanks for it.

And who did Lilia suffer for all those centuries? Who did he give up his magic and life for? Whose fault is it that he's leaving?

ugh BABE. you get me. obviously i freaked out. when she comes out of prison (where she was sent after her ex-husband forcibly restrained her and then she was coerced into saying he didn't and it was her fault) standing next to her ex who's again trying to coerce her into something she doesn't want and she looks up and sees xiao heng and her face just lights up...and then he holds out his hand to her. he offers her a choice. and she takes it (his hand and the choice) and they look at each other SO tenderly. the way she's saying thank you for being a person i can trust. the way he's saying thank you for trusting me. then we cut to a shot of their hands tightly clasped inside the carriage and slowly pull out to show their faces. i was on the floor. they are straight up holding each other's hands dude. just sitting there like yep this is something we do now. how am i supposed to recover from that. but THEN. as if that wasn't already enough! she says, my hand is cramping. (metaphorically: you're restraining me; you're restricting my agency.) loosen your hold and trust that i'll stay with you. and he DOES. and then they INTERTWINE FINGERS. because they're equal partners. because he's not like her ex and this relationship is nothing like that one. they held hands so good it advanced their arc.
