          the  honeymoon  had  been  good—time  well-spent  for  the  two  of  them.  now,  came  time  for  reality  to  settle  back  in  and  tk  juggled  his  emotions  between  not  being  ready  to  go  back  to  work  ( and  considering  playing  hooky )  and  being  prepared  to  throw  himself  back  into  the  action.  on  the  one  hand,  he  didn’t  want  to  leave  his  husband  ( he  didn’t  think  he’d  ever  get  tired  of  referring  to  carlos  in  such  a  way )  but  on  the  other,  he’d  started  to  miss  the  thrill  of  saving  lives.

          ultimately,  work  won  out—especially  when  he  saw  carlos  step  into  their  bedroom,  already  in  his  uniform.  tk  took  a  moment  to  drink  him  in—appreciating  how  good  he  looked  in  that  uniform—before  beckoning  him  over.

          once  carlos  was  close  enough,  tk  reached  for  a  fistful  of  his  shirt,  partially  pulling  him  down  on  the  bed  to  press  his  lips  to  carlos’  firmly.  pulling  away  after  a  few  moments,  he  kept  his  face  close  to  carlos’  as  he  murmured,  “ try  not  to  miss  me  too  much… ”

"T-this is office Reyes, my partners been shot and s-shes losing too much blood. I need a ambulance right now!"

The call was nothing but a noise complaint. It just some teenagers having a party and had their music up too loud. So, how did it get like this? The thought kept running through Carlos's head, as he desperately tried to stop the blood from gushing out of your chest.

Your uniform was now covered in deep, red blood. Your blood. You stared blankly at Carlos, as he kept trying to keep you awake, but you were slowly losing the battle. "C-carlos..." Your voice was so small and quite, Carlos just barley heard it.

"Shhh, save your energy. The ambulance should be here soon, ok? So, just keep your eyes open" Carlos's voice was breaking with each word. Saltly tears run down both his face and yours but everytime he tried to blink them away, more just kept coming.

"...Carlos... P-please tell TK and my d-dad that I love them..." You asked, practically begging him. "No, no, no... your gonna tell them yourself, ok? Don't say stuff like that, your gonna live, Y/N" Carlos's voice was stern but if looked into his eyes you could easily see the fear in them.

The ambulance siren could be heard in the distance. "You hear that? Their coming. Everything's going to be okay" Carlos whispered, but you couldn't even hear those few words. Everything was going black. Your battle would soon end.

Carlos stood in the waiting room of the hospital, frozen. He had blood all over him; on his face, on his clothes, everywhere from head to toe. He glanced down at his hands that's haven't stopped shaking since the incident. They were covered in blood. His best friends blood.

A older nurse, probably around 30-40 came up to him and asked if he was already since he had blood all over him. He just looked at her blankly before shaking his head no. She just gave him a small, sad smile before pointing towards the bathroom, so he could clean up.

Carlos stared at himself in the mirror, before slowly turning on the tap. His eyes welled up with tears again as the blood slowly come off his skin. He watched helplessly as the blood went down the sink, washing away into sewers.

Carlos's heart was ripping into a million pieces just as the thought of her blood washing away into nothing. It pained him. He took a couple deep breathes before leaving the bathroom, so he could make the call. The call no one ever wants to make.

He slowly pulled his phone from his pocket, and stared at TK's name. A million emotions filled his head as he brought his shaking finger to the call button. It rang a couple of times before TK's voice could be heard.

"Babe? Is everything okay?"

Carlos took one final deep breathe before he answered. He's voice breaking even more than before. "TK.... something happened... a-and I need you and Owen to come down to the h-hospital"

"CARLOS!"

The said man, looked up at the sound of his boyfriends voice calling his name. He stood up from his spot and wiping his hands slowly on his pants. TK pulled him into a hug before pulling away. "Are you okay? What happened? Is Y/N is okay?" TK asked, barley giving Carlos time to speak.

"I- I...." Carlos took a deep breath before continuing. "We were out on a noise complaint call about some teenagers throwing a party but w-when we got there, some drunk kid pulled a gun out and she... Y/N jumped in front of me a-and..."

"And what Carlos? What happened to my daughter?" Owen's voice cut through the silence, tears threatening to fall.

"I-I'm so, so sorry" The tears Carlos had been trying to hold back, finally fall, rolling down his skin. TK choked on a sob before falling to his knees, screaming and crying for his loss sister.

Carlos bent down to TK's level and pulled him into his arms, rocking him back and forth, trying to smooth his broken boyfriend. "I'm so sorry, I couldn't protect her"

Owen just stood still in the same spot, tears falling slowly down his cheeks. He didn't want to believe it. He couldn't. His little girl, his baby girl was gone. Owen could hear his sons broken crys but he was too forced on his fallen daughter.

This is from the next chapter of my TK and Sophie fic -

2011 -

“Why are you nervous?” Sophie asked. “This isn’t someone you’re trying to date. Like, isn’t this person coming over a girl?”

“Yes, she is a girl”. TK nodded. “A girl who agreed to help me when she didn’t have to, so I don’t fail the first test of summer school that has an actual grade. Please don’t say anything weird to her when she gets here”.

Sophie nodded. “So, you don’t want me to tell her that you still have all your baby teeth in a jar in your room because the thought of the tooth fairy coming in to your room for your teeth terrified you?”

Instead of answering, TK turned to glare at their mother, who had just come back out into the living room. “Why would you ever tell her that?”

“I’m sorry, catch me up here,” Gwyn said.

“TK’s baby teeth, love,” Enzo called from the kitchen.

“Oh”. Gwyn nodded. “TK that’s nothing to be embarrassed by. It’s cute. You know, I have told that story to so many—”

“Mom!” TK exclaimed, hiding his face in his forearms.

“I have not told that story to anybody,” Gwyn amended. “Sweets, please take a breath”. TK just groaned and shook his head. He turned and looked at the box his sister was rifling through.

“What are those?” TK asked.

“Your Bubbe made the ill-advised decision to give your sister a box of photos she never organized or put in albums,” his mother answered, “Which, I don’t even know how she ended up with some of these. Half of them are from when I was in law school”.

“Well, lookee here,” Sophie mused. “I’m saving this for the next time you tell me I need longer shorts”.

“Sophie, I am twenty-two years old in that picture,” Gwyn said, looking over her shoulder. “When you’re twenty-two, I’m not going to comment on what you wear”.

“That’s bullshit,” Sophie said quietly. Not quietly enough, as she still got a strong rebuke of “Sophie Strand. Language”.

“Oh, look at this one,” Sophie held up a picture of Gwyn in a full-length sparkly gown.

“That was from when I was in law school,” Gwyn said as she passed the picture to TK.

“You look like a princess,” Sophie told her. “Princess Thumb Ring”.

TK inspected the picture. “She’s right! Mom, why do you have two thumb rings on?!”

“Because I have two thumbs, young man,” she replied, taking the picture back. “And it was the 90’s. They were in style”.

“There is no way that’s true,” TK muttered quietly. His sister nodded in agreement.

After reading your series multiple times, I have to wonder what happened to the 3rd S&M box tank. Clive was said to be scrapped, and Neil never left the island. These kind of questions would also apply to the other OG Sudrian Railways.

So, in the story "Construction" from Neil the Boxy Engine, I mentioned that Matthew was initially bought by the Sodor China Clay Works, before being shipped 'to some nation in the Tropics'. That nation was actually Venezuela - Matthew arrived in 1947 and worked in Venezuela until some time in the 1980s, when political uprest led to his destruction and scrapping.

As for the other pre-NWR engines? Well, many of them were scrapped during World War II for their scrap metal, which was needed for the war effort (this was done under Sir Topham Hatt I's nose, and he was pretty furious when he found out, but was unable to do anything.) However, some had more interesting lives:

TK&ER Coffee Pot 3 was sent to Belgium in WWI as a shunter to supply the trenches of the Western Front. He was quite successful in this, and became famous after he helped save a town from a German attack in 1917. For his bravery, he was given the name Lennart and after the war, he was preserved. He is currently at the Musée du chemin de fer à vapeur, Treignes in Belgium.

W&S Manning Wardel 1 worked on Sodor until WWII, when he was sold to the Iraq State Railways and loaded onto a ship bound for the Middle Eastern Nation. Unfortunately, the ship was torpedoed while traversing the Mediterranean Sea and the engine was lost at sea. His sibling, W&S Manning Wardel 2 was shipped to Northern Queensland in 1931 during the Great Depression, having been sold to Queensland Railways. They were converted to 3ft 6in gauge in Cairns, and worked as a shunter around Northern Queensland until the 1950s, when they were converted to a stationary boiler and later scrapped.

Finally, there was W&S Number 4. Number 4 was an LB&SCR E4 class (hence the similarities to the E2 class) and was purchased new in 1898. The engine was quiet, and a hard worker, and worked well on the line until the Viaduct between Maron and Cronk was constructed. They began to act... different, more contemplative than quiet. It's unknown what happened to cause the accident (and subsequent death) of W&S 4 - however, one cold Autumn evening, the engine plunged into the ravine with a passenger train. They were destroyed upon impact.

I know that might be a bit more of an answer than you were expecting, but your question really got me thinking! Thank you again!

Hi! I'm a gay fan of 911 and I have a question about the whole Buddie fandom. As much as I like Buck and Eddie, it's frustrating that a HUGE part of the fandom is pushing for these two characters to get together instead of putting energy into supporting Hen & Carla and Michael & Dave. Not to mention Carlos and TK in Lone Star. Can you explain to me the appeal of wanting these two men together? Wouldn't it be more interesting to see two heterosexual males just be able to bond in a non-toxic fashion? That's something we don't get to see often on television.

Hey! This is MAD long lmao I am so sorry! You caught me on a day I felt like talking! Also this took like a year to answer you lolololol. This does have a few ʻhot takesʻ so please be warned! So like in this essay....

So first I am also apart of the LGBTQIA+ community, so I do understand how it could come across as a fetish or being non supportive of the current canonically LGBTQIA+ characters, however I think a lot of the interest around Buddie and the want for them to be confirmed as a couple is how they are being written. Me personally I knew since s2 e1 Buck and Eddie were written not as rivals but as two people who would eventually become friends, but it wasn’t until the Christmas episode with the elf assuming Buck was Chris’s dad and Eddie’s partner that I was like ‘hold on!’ because I was really hoping Abbey would return and I didn’t see Eddie as a possible Buck live interest because of that. The elf’s comment wasn’t played off like most other shows would (think Dean and Sam arriving anywhere in Supernatural) it made me go back and look at the other episodes to see exactly how Buck and Eddie were being framed/written. And as we have moved into further seasons I think there has been a shift in how Buddie is being written, in s3 it was very much like two people progressing into a deeper friendship then the blood clot/lawsuit gets in the way and they both have to deal with emotions surrounding that, then Buck’s response to Eddie being trapped (we see how is he when Boddy is trapped in a fire WITH A GUNMAN, it’s emotional but not to the point is is with Eddie), even the love interests feel very pushed on us and there’s so little banter between Buddie about their gfs and how they feel about these new beginnings. It feels off, not like a friendship in the slightest, more like two people trying to force something and not wanting to deal with any other feelings. Then when Eddie gets shot and reveals Buck is Chris’s legal Guardian in the event Eddie dies, that’s huge, and he did this after only a year of knowing Buck (I have friends with kids. I’ve known one of them for FIVE years, I’m at their house every week, the kid calls me family. I’m person #10 on the list of ‘who gets my kid if I die’, not #1 lol) It just feels like it’s all building up to something, and people are getting tired of waiting for that something! We’re all emotionally tired from the past two years, and probably from many shows queerbaiting us and this is something that could happen, seems to be something the actors are ok with and the fans want. So why do they keep drawing it out. This isn’t about us demanding they ignore the chance to write a healthy platonic male friendship, or forcing two characters to be gay, it’s about holding the writers to what they’ve implied and seeing what could come of it.

Also think of it like this; If Buddie is confirmed it will still be a good example of a healthy friendship which then developed into something else, like Booth/Bones! Showing the natural progression of friendship to relationship that happens a lot in real life. It’s two men who previously (on screen at least) have only been with woman, but now they have an emotionally connection with someone which they then develop and explore. This could be 911’s first nontoxic depiction of two gay characters coming together, because sorry not sorry the canon couples aren’t perfect (which does humanize them) but they also reenforce harmful troupes that plaque the LGBTQIA+ community, which I’m sure you understand: TK was a drug addict, who only got with Carlos at first cause he was hot and sex was TK’s new addition (all gay men are sex addicts who do drugs and sleep with anything that moves). Carlos was ashamed and wanted to keep TK on the downlow (poc gay men want to pretend to be straight but have free access to gay sex). Hen cheated on Karen seemingly the first chance she got (lesbians can’t handle monogamy when pushed, and cheat on their long term partners). All known and documented troupes that happen far too often.

I’m not saying Buddie is some gay jesus ship that’s gonna save the entertainment industry but if done right it could prove to be one of the few healthy depictions of two men getting into a gay relationship we have. If they plan it out correctly, show us the relationship development, like they did with Maddie/Chim for example, Buddie could be used as a positive example of a gay fictional relationship (I really could go into depth about this. I probably should tbh).

As for not supporting Hen and KAREN, or Michael and DAVID, I think fans do support them! The writers don’t. If you read fanfics Henren and Michael/David are featured heavily in many fics, and ik some people might say ‘well they’re only there so Buddie can talk about their gay side!!’ but both these couples have their own fans and fanfic tags! They aren’t just plot devices in Buddie stories. There is a huge side of the fandom that supports Henren and wants to see more of them and their family. Same with Michael and David, during the episode where Michael and Bobby team up to find that plastic surgeon who was working illegally many people where ecstatic that we were getting more Michael/David content and that David was getting more than a couple lines. But sadly it seems like the writers only want to delve into these story lines when they need filler, they even miss opportunities to include these other LGBTQIA+ characters when it makes sense;

(Someone came for me about this but I am going to bring it up again)

When Chris is sad and wants more human connection, instead of bring Harry + Michael/David and Denny+Nia+Henren back into the picture (and yes I understood at the time the pandemic was bad (lmao still is!!), but all the actors at some point would have/had crossed over into each other’s ‘bubbles’, so ALL the actors would have been exposed to each other so getting the children together with adults they had ALREADY been with during shooting wouldn’t have been a super spreader event) but instead they brought in Ana after only two on screen dates and pretended like it was a logical thing for someone who’s up to that point been extremely careful with their child.

They really could have pushed the ‘118 is a family!’ message here and included the canonically gay supporting characters, and the lesbian main character(s) but they did not and instead chose to push the Ana/Eddie coupling even though they hadn’t properly developed it yet. The writers themselves don’t seem to care about developing their canonically gay characters and including them more than they have to but fans are continuously developing Henren and Michael/David with hc and fics.

I’d like to use your logic against you for a second, in s1 we have a very healthy, platonic friendship between Chim/Bobby but that got written out to the point they are more like boss/employee unless the scene calls for them to seem closer, we now have Bobby and Michael friendship but again we hardly see Michael. On Lone Star we have Owen and Judd as a really, really good example of a healthy male friendship but we see Judd more often with Tommy now then we do with Owen, and in s2 it’s overshadowed by Owen trusting Charlie from Twilight and constantly getting fucked over! Why can’t the writter just be happy with these happy, healthy, emotionally well male-male friendship they’ve already included and expand upon them. There’s enough drama because the show literally involves burning buildings and people’s lives being at risk from some natural/man made disaster ever 12 seconds. Does it need to have so much interpersonal conflict and male peacocking??

April 5, 2021: Run 140-144 is filmed. BTS join the variety show Game Caterers, New Journey to the West, to take part in a 4-episode series where they play a variety of games.

In the first game “attendance”, the members must point to one member while saying another’s name. Jin calls Yoongi by a nickname, using his last name “Min”. He tries to jokingly say the “Ji” in front was silent (implying he meant Jimin while looking at Yoongi). Tae playfully sings “I’m Min” as they discuss, and you can hear Jk doing a copy / paste rendition and singing along after. The camera doesn’t pan to Jk, staying on Tae, but the line “I’m Min” repeats and it’s Jk’s voice. timestamp 4:05

The final game of this first episode is the “figure quiz” in which members must quickly identify the celebrity’s picture. This is a ‘staple’ of the Game Caterers show and it can be a mix of Western and Korean individuals or just Korean [depending on the show]. The stakes are high, as they’re playing for food for their lunch. If they fail to guess the person, they must forfeit a food item (tofu, meat, etc). In their third round loss, Jungkook suggests they remove the ice cream, as it’s not good for one’s health. Tae playfully calls him out for this, asking why he eats so much ice cream if it’s not good for you. Jungkook is visibly nervous to be at the end—there were little foods left on the table and Jungkook was in an unenviable position of either being first or last. Tae attempts to comfort him and get him to relax by saying his posture is wrong, and to sit as he does when he’s watching TV. Again, this is a more subtle but telling moment, as it indicates Tae is aware of how Jungkook relaxes when he’s watching TV. An argument could be made that BTS are all aware of habits, as they’re all close and shared a living space, but we wanted to note this since people continuously say Taekook are not close. Little indicators, such as the ice cream and sitting habits, show Tae and Jk do spend time together, regardless if someone thinks it’s platonic or romantic. Na PD confirms Jk now looks relaxed.

Behind the scenes Run 140: 

Some people had their reservations about and their closeness due to the fact that Tae flubbed RDJ and it is a well known fact that JK is enamoured by Iron Man (e.g. he has mentioned in earlier interviews how much he loves him & chose him as a celebrity crush once). However, in the behind RUN scenes you can clearly hear Tae’s voice in the background as he inquires if saying “Iron Man” would’ve been passable, confirming that Tae knows who this is. Additionally, Tae has shown before he is aware of who Iron Man is (e.g. handing JK an iron man figurine at a concert, plus JK has mentioned on multiple occasions in interviews with all of them how much he loves Iron Man). 

Also keep in mind, this is a high pressure situation where multiple members had struggled to get people’s names correct, even world famous athletes, actors, or people that they’ve met or worked with. There is also food on the line (remember a funny moment that they gave up their album first to protect the food). What may seem like an easy answer to one may not necessarily be easy to another, especially in a pressure situation. 

There is also the possibility that Tae was being playful, perhaps not knowing the actor’s name in such a quick moment, but teasing since he was uncertain if the superhero name would work (and he wanted to see the other members’ reactions). This is plausible since he does proceed to ask behind the scenes if RDJ’s Marvel superhero name would’ve been acceptable + playfully asked who could it be without stuttering or pausing to try to recall a name, which the other members did when truly trying to recall a name.

Jk is visibly nervous about starting the final round of “figure quiz”. He rocks anxiously while the members are comforting and, even though Yoongi and him are the only ones to not say an incorrect name, before the round begins he deflects it as luck. Prior to him being visibly nervous, he mentions his perfect streak is simply due to luck, which Tae quickly reassures will continue for the final round.

Episode 2 - continues as a YT exclusive. This is chaotic Bangtan at their finest, with a lot of hilarious moments and interactions between members. The maknae line, in particular, are quite determined to sabotage the older members’ tasked individual missions, though Jimin and Jungkook could be deemed the orniest of the three. All members try to sabotage Tae dancing to “Idol” but since this is a Taekook Timeline only the TK moments are noted.There isn’t much in significance as far as significant Taekook moments go, and we try to be mindful to only show moments of substance so the reader understands they’re close. But since episode 1 had some notable interactions that signified closeness, for consistency’s sake we will just note some quick, cute moments, though one may be considered to showcase closeness. 

The maknae line sabotage Joon’s attempt to place 300 dominoes. Tae keeps his hand around Jk’s wrist as the maknae line teases a poor, helpless Joon from completing his task. Even when they all run, Tae keeps a hold of Jk.

Unfortunately subs don’t translate but Tae quietly says something to Jk twice. This may be considered a possible “noteworthy” moment as it doesn’t appear Tae whispers anything to any of the other members in their attempts to sabotage him, however, we also don’t know what he’s saying to determine importance to the game. 

The first time it happens, Tae locks his hands around Jk’s wrists and they both subconsciously lean into one another’s space, with Tae whispering something to Jk the subs don’t translate.

At the end of the episode, the members discuss their assigned missions. Jk’s was to protect the Couque d’-asse (a thin cookie that is known for easily crumbling), which he succeeded in doing. Tae laments he should’ve pressed harder. Jk clarifies that was why he slouched, then smiles cheekily up at Tae, who then jokingly goes to smash the pocket he had held the cookie in prior to the reveal.

Episode 4-

The members are tasked with saving the dragon balls. Winning seven will allow a wish of theirs to be granted. Taegi team up for a mission. PD NA comments Tae is athletic and Jk chimes in that Tae is also very good at choreography (to which Joon agrees). timestamp 8:46

Grace was the one to answer the door when TK arrived at the Ryder house for the 126’s first movie night. It had been Marjan’s idea that once a month they should stay at one of their home, hang out and watch a movie instead of going out to the bar like they always did. Everyone thought it was a great plan. Judd offered to host the first one, saying his wife would love to meet them all. And possibly also making a comment about not wanting them to be crammed into a tiny apartment.

               “TK, hi! Where’s Owen? I thought you two would’ve come together.”

               “He had a date with Zoe.” He explained as they walked in toward the living room. “And he said it’d be good for the team to hang out without the captain every once in a while. He’ll make up for it by hosting next month.”

               “Well, I’m glad you’re not following his lead and prioritised us over your boyfriend. I heard he’s pretty handsome.”

               “Really? Who told you that?” TK threw a stare at Paul who threw his hands up and shook his head. It wasn’t him. “Guess you’ll find out. I invited him to join us. Is that ok?”

               “Of course. I’m excited to meet him.”

TK couldn’t wait for Carlos to finally get to know the others. They were like family to him and he felt as though introducing him to them made their relationship official somehow. He’d hoped his dad would’ve been there too, but maybe it was better this way. Less pressure. They’d do dinner another night, after everyone had time to tell Owen all about how much they loved Carlos and how great he was.

Carlos was incredibly nervous. It felt like a lot to meet TK’s entire team, his family, all at once. Even without Owen there. These people were very important to TK, and TK was important to them. What if they didn’t like him? What if they thought Carlos wasn’t good enough?

He’d never really spent time with any of them before. They’d run into each other on various calls, but they only had very brief interactions. They’d definitely seen him from afar when he’d gone to pick up TK at the firehouse, but he only really knew Paul, who he’d become good friends with. Maybe that would be something to play in his favour.

All of his nervousness evaporated the second he set eyes on TK, sitting on the couch, talking so casually with everyone. They both stopped in their tracks immediately to smile at each other, as if the world disappeared around them for a minute.

               “Carlos, you made it! I saved you a seat.”

               “Where? That couch looks pretty full to me.”

               “Here.” TK said, standing and gesturing to the newly vacated space on the couch between Paul and Marjan.

               “And where will you sit?”

               “On the floor, with Mateo.”

               “Surprised you didn’t say on my lap.”

               “Oh no, we’re not having that conversation again.” Paul said. “We have enough of one sickeningly cute couple around here. Please, give us singles a chance.”

Judd laughed, his arms wrapped around Grace, comfortably installed in the corner section of the couch.

               “I see.” Carlos said. “That’s good actually. This way I can play with TK’s hair during the movie.”

               “We should do hangouts just the singles.” Marjan said, with immediate approval from Paul and Mateo.

               “Great idea. We could pick a night, you do that, and TK and I can go on a double date with Judd and Grace.”

               “What if we don’t want to do that?” Judd asked.

               “Of course we do. We love TK, and I’m already starting to think Carlos might be too good for him.” Grace said.

TK reached up to grab Carlos’ hand so he could deposit a few soft kisses on it.

               “Glad to have you on my side, Grace.” TK said. “I tried to tell him so many times and he won’t believe me.”

               “Well, count yourself lucky.” Judd said. “I still don’t understand what made Grace pick me.”

Grace turned around in her seat to kiss him. Carlos leaned down and pulled TK’s head back to do the same. Paul and Marjan groaned.

               “Can we just watch the movie already?” Mateo chimed in.

They all settled in their seats and Judd pressed play. As they watched the movie, all reacting together, making comments, throwing each other popcorn, Carlos found himself slipping down to join TK on the floor, as if pulled by a magnetic force. It took approximately thirty seconds for Mateo to steal his seat. But it didn’t matter. Carlos much preferred sitting on the carpet with TK in his lap. Though he realised he fit in pretty naturally with the group. It was as though he was meant to be part of their family and it made him feel good about his relationship with TK, made it all feel more real, like there was hope at a future for them.

In the Night

The gravity of what might’ve happened to Owen catches up with TK. (AO3)

T.K. doesn’t know when things when wrong— when the relief of saving his father and getting home from San Angelo turned into a deep, unshakeable fear, but it wasn’t until he’d gotten back to Austin and was tucked next to Carlos in bed that his feelings settled after being shaken for days. Carlos has gone to sleep, and the minute T.K. felt Carlos’ breathing even out, negative feelings began to emerge like they were sinking from the air above and falling into his consciousness with a thud. He rolls away from Carlos, suddenly feeling hot and tight-chested. He thinks of smoke in the air and his dad lost somewhere in it, and he can’t get the thought off his mind that somewhere in that smoke there was a disaster waiting to happen. His lungs are encumbered by the pollution of late-night thought.

He can't stay in bed any longer, so he drags his feet over the side and creeps out of bed, trying to be as lightfooted as a man of his size can be. He thinks he's pretty good at it. He's had lots of practice from his teenage years when he never stayed home for too long, but T.K.'s parents didn't want to notice. They didn't want to admit that something was seriously wrong with their son. Carlos is harder for T.K. to fool, which can be both a blessing and a curse. He creeps out of the room and closes the door behind him, and heads down the steps. They creak under his feet because stairs always seem to scream your secrets loudest when you want them to stay quiet.

T.K.'s eyes are heavy with the want of sleep, so he boils water and pours in instant coffee beads that Carlos keeps for when he makes coffee ice cream. The instant coffee is harsh and unnuanced, but it does the trick without all the fuss. The warmth of the coffee eases some of the coldness in his body, but it only makes his thoughts faster and more frantic. Maybe that's what he needs— to rush all these fears out of his body so that they'll leave him alone.

With the hot drink in his hand, T.K. sits in his favorite chair, and it's the one that he and Carlos always fight over— black leather with button tufts. It doesn't look that comfortable, but it's oddly just the right shape and size for T.K.'s body. It's sleek, but the more T.K. sits in it, the cozier it feels.

He wants all his thoughts to go away, but they've chased him to a corner, and now, there's no escaping them. They're noisy and they fight one another because the unsettled feeling that T.K. grew up knowing means that frantic is his natural state and he needs unnatural means to numb all the problems he's never learned to deal with. He thinks of his dad, and a lump forms in his throat as he thinks about how many times they've come close to death only to escape it by sheer luck.

The thoughts are floating around T.K.'s head like leaves in the wind when T.K. feels a weight over his shoulder, and the leaves drop from where they were hanging. He looks up to see Carlos leaning over from behind the chair. “Hey, what’s wrong?” Carlos asks, his voice a warm, breathy whisper, and the vibrations counteract the unsteadiness T.K. feels. “Are you hurt?”

T.K. takes one of the arms draped around him, and lets his hand fall into Carlos'. He pulls Carlos to the front of the chair so they're looking face to face. "I’m okay, babe," T.K. promises. "I just couldn't sleep."

"Is that coffee?" Carlos asks, sitting on the tiny ottoman that he's pulled close so that it’s almost touching the chair. He doesn't even joke that T.K.'s in his chair. He takes the cup from T.K.'s hand, and for a second, T.K. thinks Carlos is going to drink it, but he reaches over to put it on the coffee table instead.

"Instant, so it sucks."

Carlos scrunches his nose. "You'll never get to sleep with that sludge in your system."

T.K.winds his hand around the back of Carlos’ neck, pulling himself towards the edge of the chair so he's closer to Carlos. “You should be in bed. You have work tomorrow.” The last thing T.K. wants is for Carlos to go to work tired. If something happened, he’d always wonder if it was because Carlos hadn’t gotten enough sleep and it was his fault.

“I worried when I woke up with a blanket still on," Carlos rubs a hand over T.K.'s back where the muscles are most taut.

T.K. laughs. “I bet you didn’t miss that when I was gone.”

“Eh, I get too hot, anyway.”

“Oh, yeah, I know. You're Carlos Reyes, the hottest man alive.”

There's a glimmer in Carlos' eyes somewhere past the disquiet. “Stroking my ego won’t get you out of a conversation, T.K.”

“You can’t fault me for trying," T.K. says. "I’m not even sure I know what’s wrong. Nothing should be wrong. Everything turned out okay. I was fine."

"But now you're drinking instant coffee when you could be stealing all my blankets."

T.K. doesn't even keep the blanket on half the time; he throws it off both of them and onto the floor. "That's temperature control, baby. We've been over this. I've got to keep you from overheating."

"I have a thermostat for that."

"A man and his modern inventions.""I'm sure there's a reason you're not in bed?"

" I couldn't sleep. I thought a change of scenery would help. It doesn't help."

"Want to talk about it?" He does want to talk about it, but the words are still abstract and muddled in his head, and he doesn't know how to share them.

T.K. shrugs, 'I don't know if it will help. My brain is being dumb."

Carlos takes T.K.'s hands in his. "It can't hurt to try."

Carlos has a way of pushing the truth out of T.K. in a way that's firm and gentle all at once, but T.K. isn’t sure that he can say the words, not when he fears them so much. “Every time something bad happens, coming out of it is defying the odds.” T.K. swallows. "We can't keep defying the odds. We can't keep getting lucky."

"I don't know much about odds, but I wouldn't call what you're doing getting lucky. You're getting unlucky and then finding your way out of it. Bad things happen, but it's your willingness to go to the extreme for other people that keeps you all surviving."

 “He could have died,” T.K.'s voice is small.

 Carlos pulls T.K. closer, and T.K.'s just barely in the chair and is half on the ottoman in the space between Carlos' legs. "But he's okay now," Carlos reminds T.K.

"One day he won't be." It's not something Carlos can deny because that's how life works. One day people aren't okay. They're gone too quickly. "People keep dying," and he's falling into existential territory that makes him feel even more hopeless, "and they're just going to keep dying." He puts his head on Carlos' shoulder so he's looking down at the floor. "I don't want to live like that with the constant fear that my whole life is going to be flipped on its head in just one moment. That everything that means anything to me will be taken."

"I know, it sucks," and T.K.'s relieved that Carlos doesn't try to tell him that it will be okay. He doesn't make T.K. feel stupid for being afraid. "I'm scared too. Every time you're putting yourself in danger, I wonder if you won't get out. Even when you aren't in danger, I still worry sometimes because shit happens, and it doesn’t' make sense. It just happens."

"How do you sleep knowing that? How do you push those thoughts aside and enjoy life?" T.K. knows there's no easy answer to that question. There will always be times when he feels that same frantic, claustrophobic feeling.

"I don't know," Carlos answers, pressing his lips against T.K.'s temple. "I guess you just take comfort in the things you do have, including the memories of what you don't have anymore."

T.K. gives a tense laugh. "That easy, huh?" T.K. knows he'll feel better in a few days. When he's processed everything that had happened, but until that happens, he holds Carlos close, and he lets Carlos pull him back to bed because Carlos needs his rest. T.K.'s thoughts keep him up for a while longer, but they don't have the same potency the longer they linger. He knows that if he can close his eyes just long enough that the tiredness and sadness will take over. He'll fall asleep and he'll wake up feeling better because mornings always felt a little better after a sad, scary night. T.K. listens to Carlos' evened-out breathing, and he matches his own breathing to his lover's. He feels himself calm, and eventually, he drifts off to sleep, even with the worries and instant coffee still in his system.

Niki Tk HCs!

Niki has three death spots. These spots are: neck, stomach, hips.

Her neck is her absolute worst spot. She scrunches up her neck and starts loudly squealing and squeaking, and she lightly kicks her feet and bats at the Ler’s hand as she half-heartedly tries to get away. This spot does tire her out very quickly though, so it’s best to save things like raspberries for the finishing blow, because they will make her go limp and safeword instantly.

Second worst spot is her stomach. She actually really enjoys being tickled there, and tends to arch her back into the Ler’s hand while claiming it’s just a reflex. Unlike her neck she can handle raspberries on her stomach, and sometimes when she’s feeling a little more courageous she even asks for raspberries. Strangely enough this spot doesn’t really tire her out all that much, unless she’s tickled there for a long period of time.

Third worst is her hips. Hip digs make her just collapse into you and start squealing, and her reaction to being tickled there is usually just to continuously twist her body left and right as she lightly swats at the Ler’s hand. Just like her neck she gets tired very easily here - but mostly just because of how much she squirms instead of how much it actually tickles.

She’s a kinda insecure Lee. You can easily pass it off as shyness at times, but she doesn’t ask for tickles out of fear of accidentally being a burden to others around her. She also sometimes shakes her head and says “no” to teasy compliments.

Whispers soft “thank you”s in the Ler’s ear every time they do something she particularly liked (raspberries on stomach, smol platonic kisses on neck, etc.)

She squeaks a lot. Like, a lot a lot.

All teases are effective on her - there isn’t really any particular type that stands out all that much. Though, babytalk makes her just melt into the Ler’s arms, so that’s different.

She’s an extremely affectionate Ler. She will hug her Lees close to her and nuzzle their neck while gently tickling them with one hand and roughly tickling them with the other.

Niki is most keen on simply complimenting her Lees. Half the time she doesn’t even mean to be teasy, she just genuinely thinks they’re adorable. She’ll say things like “you have such a nice laugh!” “What was that noise? Can you do that again, that was sooo cute!”

Definitely does that thing where you pepper platonic kisses on a Lee’s neck or belly and blow small raspberries in between them.

She likes letting her Lees pick where they get tickled. She asks them if they want any spots in particular to be targeted and if they do answer, she does as they ask. If they don’t then she tickles wherever she wants to, while constantly asking if what she’s doing is okay.

Is more just an embarrassing Ler than anything else. God help you if she tickles you in front of somebody else because you will never live it down. She coos, babytalks and compliments the Lee all the time while giving them nicknames she finds cute. She’s like a mother babying you in front of your friends in that aspect.

She’s extremely intent on aftercare. She’ll give you cuddles, water, head pats, hell she’d probably cook something for you if you really wanted her to.

1. What’s your favourite scent? (could be candles, favourite food etc)

This is hard because it’s one of those things I can’t think of until I’m smelling it. Uhhhhh, strawberry scented stuff, the smell of my Nonna’s pasta cooking, the smell of recently photocopied stuff, and old bookstores off the top of my head.

2. Do you prefer sunsets or sunrises?

Sunsets! I love the colours of sunsets so much! The nice warm orange and sometimes the sky gets purple-y pink-ish and it’s so pretty! I also really like it when there are a few clouds and the light from the setting sun goes behind it and gives the clouds this golden outline ahhh it’s so pretty!

(I mean, sunrises are really nice too when I’m awake and in a nice place to see it though! I usually feel pretty relaxed and peaceful when I can see a sunrise and there’s usually a fresh and quiet feel about that time of day.)

3. What is your favourite place that you’ve visited?

Catania! On the trip to Italy I went on for school that was one of the places we went to and it was probably one of the places where I was happiest and thought was most beautiful! Where we were staying probably contributed a lot to that because the place we were staying at was growing a lot of like fruit and stuff and we could also see Mt Etna (which was actually beginning to smoke on the day we were leaving to go to another city) from where we were staying and idk the place was just really nice? I just remember specifically being up in the morning and the air was really nice and when we went to a place that had a view of the water the reflection of the sun was making it glimmer gold and it was so pretty!

4. A place you want to visit?

Honestly when I saw this question I was like ehhh I’m not desperately wanting to go to any place that I haven’t been to already but now that I think about it, I’d like to see more of Australia like once in my life I’d like to go to the Outback (I say at I’d probably complain about heat and dryness).

5. What’s a song that you would never get sick of?

Unravel by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure (aka the TG OP). I have listened to that song + a billion covers of that song soooo many times for the past like 2 and a half years and I am still not sick of it and I can’t say I ever will be!

6. Favourite game that you’ve played?

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky!!! I have such a huge about of feelings and love for this game you have no idea! I love it more than the main series Pokemon games! Mystery Dungeon’s real strength is its story and characters and HEART and it’s beautiful! I have replayed Explorers of Sky so many times I love it so much!

7. Favourite sound?

Probably waves Waves from a bit of a distance is even better

8. What is your opinion on cats?

I love cats! I’ve never owned a pet and I want a cat. And cats generally like me too! (Although I don’t know how to pick them up and hold them orz). There’s one cat that lives in my cousin’s street and my cousin’s are like “be careful that cat scratches” and then the cat will just go up to me and rub against my leg and I’m like “??? !!!!”. And there was another time when I was walking home and there was a nearby cat a bit of a distance away from me and I stood there for a bit meowing back and forth with it and held my hand out and it came up to me and it was like the best thing that ever happened to me.

9. Favourite book?

I haven’t read a full book in like forever but as I usually answer whenever this question comes up I’m going to go back to my favourite book I read when I was 11, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. I didn’t know anything about it when I read my mum was just like “I read this book and the protagonist is your age so I thought you might like it” and I really enjoyed it.

10. Most useless thing you’ve ever bought?

Probably the stickers I buy and never use because i don’t actually use stickers. At least looking at the unused stickers are ok I guess like it’s probably still better than like when I buy an item of clothing that I never wear ever.

11. What is one of your favourite tropes or AUs?

MERMAID AU MERMAID AU EVERY TIME! I am SUCH a sucker for mermaid AU I love it so much! Oh and SOULMATE AUs too!! Also favourite tropes include cliched things like, Character A doing something unintentionally adorable af and having no idea that Character B is just left stunned and internally clutching their heart like “holy s hit hol y sh it”. Also one trope that gets me every time is the “break their heart to save them even though it kills me inside to do this to them” trope (a certain mystic messenger route reminded me of my weakness to that trope).

5 day Las Vegas power pass … was it worth it?

There are 34 Attractions,shows, and/or Transportation that are in season that are included with the pass for free Entry. Amongst the 34 Attractions I wanted to go to 24 of them. After 5days and huge rush rush, lack of sleep, increased stress, lack of relaxation, lots of walking and hailing lyft rides I went to 18 Attractions and activities. The remainder 6 activities that I did not have time to attend, I didn’t really care about four of them but there was two that I really wanted to go.

So how much did I save and was it worth it? I save over $300. It's only worth it if you are the type that likes to do many activities and don't mind the hassle of running around all over the city. If you are a more calm, layback person and like to slowly take your time then it's not the best deal for you. So it comes down to what type of vacation you crave. Although I was tired running around, I felt it was worth it for me. But would I do it again a second time? The answer is no. It was too exhausting.

“You grew up wanting so bad to be Luke Skywalker, but you realize that you were basically a Stormtrooper, a faceless, nameless rifleman, carrying a spear for empire, and you start to accept the startlingly obvious truth that these are people like you.”

Author’s note:

Behind the Helmet was inspired by this quote by Daniel Crimmins, who is in the U.S. Army and is a Iraq War veteran. This quote was about how they had their 9/11 patriotism crushed & replaced with something that made them feel disgusting and hate themselves. So I started thinking: What about the Stormtrooper that started out wanting to do good, and found out that they were a part of something horrible? No one really ever focuses on the nameless Stormtroopers who die by the “good guys”. I found my focus drawn to one that appears in Star Wars: Episode IV, whose designation is TK-421, and is one of the only ones you hear in the movie. The only information about him is that he wasn’t at his post in the movie. I just wanted to give him a story, and also our own country’s people who serve, so that they aren’t just a number or a helmet. That they have their own dreams and ambitions and lives.

ACT ONE Scene One

Lights come on to a Clone Stormtrooper with the designation TK-421 standing center stage. He addresses the audience directly.

TK-421: I was born a clone, whose purpose was to fight, to be a soldier. All I’ve ever wanted was to be the best at what I did. To be the perfect soldier who makes a difference for the better. That’s how most soldiers start out, until they find out that they are just pawns in an evil man’s game of chess and that there is no such thing as killing for good. This is where I started in my mission to be the perfect soldier, right when I graduated from training and was about to go out into the real world. Oh, how young and naïve I was to think that I could make a difference by going to war.

Lights go dark.

Lights turn on to an open room with rows of seats that are filled with Clone troopers whose attention is on a podium in the front of the room. The room is filled with nervous chatter from all the newly graduated recruits. Among them is a young TK-421, at the age of twenty, who talks to his friends sitting near him.

TK-421: I can’t believe it’s finally here, after all these years, we’re finally done with training.

TK-422: Yeah, and you still can’t hit a target with your blaster.

TK-421: Well at least I know how to turn on my headset transmitter before a drill so I don’t end up by myself hiding in a bathroom stall.

TK-422: Hey, I told you, my transmitter was broken… and I was holding it all day.

(The small group of friends chuckle as the two poke fun at each other.)

An officer of the rank of Captain walks in to the room, to where all the Clone troopers come to attention. The officer walks to the podium and addresses the room.

Captain: Take your seats. I know this is a proud and exciting day for you all, but I want you all to remember that you are now going out into real battle zones and situations with real enemies that can, and will, kill you. This is where all your years of training will aid you and keep you alive if you keep it as instinct for you when you don’t know what to do. Now you all should be receiving your orders on where you will be stationed for your first command on your personal communicators momentarily. After you receive them, they will include information on what shuttles you are to board to the system you are stationed at. You will go straight there from here and all of your belongings will already be on the shuttle waiting for you. Now I wish you all luck with wherever you get stationed and with what you end up doing in your military careers and hope to see you all in the Fleet someday. Congratulations.

The room comes to attention as the Captain walks out of the room. Within seconds, the graduates’ personal communicators start beeping to inform them of their new orders. Everyone starts chatting and asking questions about each other’s orders and where they got stationed.

(TK-421 looks over at TK-422 as his personal communicator beeps.)

TK-421: So what did you get?

TK-422: Someone better be playing a joke on me, I’m not going to a planet where I have to talk to walking carpets.

(TK-421 chuckles just as his personal communicator beeps.)

TK-422: I hope you got stuck with Hoth, so you have to freeze your butt off for 5 years.

TK-421: No, even worse, this armor is going to be a sweat suit with how humid it’s going to be.

TK-422: Ah, good ole’ Felucia. Not to mention the giant bugs and plants you have to deal with. That’s not that bad though.

(They start to argue about whose orders are worse when another graduate, who is wearing the designation TK-435, walks over to them.)

TK-435: So where did you two butt knuckles get stationed?

TK-422: What’s it to you 435? Need to know where to send us flowers?

(TK-421 chuckles at this and draws a glare from TK-435.)

TK-435: No, I just need to know where to send some extra blasters so that they can use them to finally shut you two up.

TK-422: Oh, is that because you can’t do it yourself?

TK-435: Shut up, just because you two got the top scores of the class doesn’t mean I can’t shoot you like anything else.

TK-421: Maybe, but that would mean that you’d have to figure out how to use the blaster first.

(TK-421 and TK-422 burst into laughter as TK-435 storms off.)

TK-422: I’m going to miss messing with 435.

TK-421: Yeah, same here. I think I’ll mainly miss just having you here to be my partner in crime though.

TK-422: Hey, it doesn’t mean we can’t still be stationed together later, or visit each other when we have leave.

TK-421: I know, it’s just that things are going to change so much after today, and I’m not sure that I want them to.

TK-422: Don’t worry, you’re going to do great in whatever comes, you always do. Just like how you got top of the class all these years. I’m sure you’ll probably tame all the giant dragonflies by the time you’re done there or something crazy like that.

TK-421: And I’m sure you’ll still have at least one of your arms left when you leave Kashyyk.

(They both chuckle a bit. Then an announcement goes out over the speakers that it’s now time to board the shuttles to their assigned systems.)

TK-422: Well I guess this is it.

TK-421: Yup, I guess so.

TK-422: Don’t be a stranger now and make sure to keep in contact.

TK-421: Oh please, I don’t think I’m the one we have to worry about with that here.

TK-422: That’s true, you are always on top of things like that. Well I guess I’ll see you around then.

TK-421: Yeah, see you. And good luck out there. They both walk away from each other and head towards opposite doors. Just as they’re about to exit the room, they turn and look at each other and give a little salute, then walk out.

The lights go dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: Little did I know that that would be the last time I see or hear from him for 15 years.

Scene Two

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: When you’re in training and you have to memorize all these orders, just in case you have to execute them for crazy situations; And you memorize one that states: Kill all Jedi, you don’t actually think you’re going to have to do it. Why would you kill the peace keepers of the galaxy? But, we aren’t allowed to question what we do, we just do it.

Lights come up to what appears as being outside in a world that has giant plants and forms a type of jungle. On the right side of the stage is a small group of Clone troopers, and a Jedi Twilek, whose name is Aayla Secura, appears to be scouting to the left. The Clone troopers, with TK-421 among them, are in a circle talking when the commander’s personal holocommunicator beeps and he sees it’s the supreme chancellor.

Commander: Quiet up lads, it’s the Chancellor.

(The group falls silent as the Commander answers.)

Chancellor: Commander, it’s time, execute Order 66.

Commander: Yes, my lord.

(The call then hangs up and the Commander looks at his troops.)

TK-421: He can’t be serious can he?

Commander: If there’s anything the chancellor is, it’s serious.

TK-421: But why? Why would we have to do this? We can’t.

Commander: It doesn’t matter, we have to. We follow orders, and don’t question them. It’s what we were born to do.

(The group moves off over to the Jedi while TK-421 stands there, appearing to be too stunned to move.)

Commander: Miss Secura, we picked up movement on our radars east of here.

Aayla: Very well, let us head that way then.

(The group walks offstage with TK-421 still standing there. Then the noise of blasters and a thud like a body dropping is heard and TK-421 falls to his knees.)

The lights go dark. You hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: What could they have done to deserve this?

Scene Three

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice. TK-421: Three years it took before I finally felt human again after that day. I was reminded of who I was, by a girl I just happened to meet after I got stationed on Corruscant. The world that is one big city. A city of life. But even in a city of life, you can come very close to death. The lights come on to a hospital room. Nurses wheel in a gurney with an unconscious Stormtrooper on it and bring it to the middle of the room where they stop. A female doctor walks in to the room.

Doctor: What happened here?

Nurse: Blaster fire to abdomen.

Doctor: Some people just don’t know how to duck.

Nurse: Actually, they said that he jumped in front of it to save another soldier.

Doctor: Oh, now why would he do that? What’s his name?

Nurse: Doesn’t have one, he’s a clone. Guess they just call him TK-421.

(TK-421 starts to stir and groan on the gurney.) Doctor: TK-421, can you hear me?

TK-421: What happened? What happened to him, is he okay?

Doctor: Is who okay?

TK-421: The new kid, I told him to get down but he was in shock and wouldn’t listen. I had no other choice.

Nurse: He’s fine, he’s one of the guys that brought you in.

Doctor: Why would you jump in front of him like that?

TK-421: Guess I just wanted to do something that I could finally be proud of.

Doctor: Well that was very brave of you, stupid, but brave. You saved his life.

(TK-421 turns his head and looks at the Doctor.)

TK-421: You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

(The Doctor turns to the nurse.)

Doctor: Did they say if he hit his head?

Nurse: No, I don’t think so.

TK-421: Are you an angel?

Doctor: Must be the blood loss.

TK-421: I must know your name.

Doctor: If it will make you be quiet, it’s Kahlan. Please save your energy now.

TK-421: Kahlan, that’s beautif—

(TK-421 passes out midsentence.)

Kahlan: Okay, we need to hurry up and operate before he loses anymore blood.

(They wheel the gurney out of the scene.) Lights go dark.

Scene Four

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: That day that I almost died, I was reminded of what it was like to help someone. When I woke up from the surgery, I still thought the doctor was an angel. Maybe a guardian angel. Someone who helped people for a living. I had to see more of her. So that’s what I did, almost every day during my recovery, I would go back and find her and wait for her to get off her shift. Then we would just hang out and talk. I would learn more about her and what drives her to do what she does. She made me feel alive and like who I was meant to be. I didn’t want to lose her when I healed and had to leave. So we did what any two people in love and scared of being apart do.

The lights come on to a small wedding chapel with TK-421 standing at the front next to a minister. He’s looking down the aisle as Kahlan walks up to the two.

Kahlan: Did you really have to wear your uniform?

TK-421: It’s a tradition when we get married.

Kahlan: But why does it have to be white?

TK-421: Sorry, we don’t get to choose it.

Kahlan: Well I’m going to have to talk to them about it.

TK-421: Good luck with that. In the meantime, you ready to get married?

Kahlan: Absolutely.

(Smiling, they turn to the minister as he goes through the ceremony and comes to the end.)

Minister: TK-421, do you take Kahlan to be your wedded wife, to live together in marriage? Do you promise to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, and forsaking all others, be faithful only to her, for as long as you both shall live?

Scene Five

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: I always thought that when my mandatory 10 years would come that I would get out and know what I’d want to do. When it came though, I thought I could still do good and help by being a soldier. Kahlan thought I should get out and find what to do on my own. I wish I would’ve listened to her.

The lights come on to a small, nicely furnished room with some high ranking officers sitting at a desk. TK-421 enters the room and comes to attention before the officers. A Captain walks out in front of TK-421.

Captain: You know, I couldn’t believe it when I heard that it was you. I remember you from your training days, one of the best I’ve ever had. Glad to see you want to continue doing great things for the Empire for another 10 years. You’re one hell of a soldier.

TK-421: Thank you, I’m honored to, sir.

Captain: Now then, let’s get on with it.

(The Captain and TK-421 go through the re-enlistment ceremony.)

The lights slowly fade until it’s black.

Scene Six

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: When you marry a doctor, there’s this feeling that nothing will happen to them and that they’ll never get sick. Silly, I know. The lights come on to a hospital room. Kahlan is laying in the bed hooked up to machines with TK-421 next to her. A doctor walks in to the room.

Doctor: I’m sorry, Kahlan.

Kahlan: Just tell me, I can handle it.

Doctor: It’s just like you said…

Kahlan: Lung cancer…

Doctor: Yes, I don’t know how we didn’t catch it sooner. It’s already grown past the first stages of containment. I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

TK-421: But how can this happen? How can it be lung cancer?

Kahlan: It must have been from when I went to Nal Hutta for that trip to help the locals with medical treatment.

Doctor: I also think that’s it. We don’t know what kind of chemicals and toxins those Hutts are pumping out of their factories. I’ve never seen it grow so fast.

TK-421: I told you I didn’t want you to go there, it was too dangerous. I shouldn’t have allowed it. Kahlan: I would’ve gone anyways, and you know it. Those poor people needed help, who am I to deny them it?

TK-421: You can deny them when it causes your own death.

Kahlan: I can’t put my life above someone else’s. If I can help somebody and am able to then I will.

TK-421: I know, I just don’t want to lose you. Do you know how long she has doctor?

Doctor: I’m afraid that at this rate, she may only have a month or possibly two left. I’m so sorry Kahlan. We will do whatever we can to help you through it.

Kahlan: Thank you, doctor.

(The doctor leaves the room)

TK-421: I can’t let this happen. We can find something, we can fight it.

Kahlan: Honey, it’s okay. If it’s my time to go, then it’s my time. There is no fighting this one, I’m sorry.

TK-421: That’s the only thing i know to do.

Kahlan: I know, but all we can do now is spend what time we have left together. I will love you until I’m not able to anymore. And when I’m gone, my love will still be with you.

TK-421: But you’re all I have. I don’t know what I’m going to do, you’re what reminds me of my purpose. I’ll be lost without you. You’re my guardian angel.

Kahlan: No, you won’t. I will still be with you in your heart. And you’re still going to live on and do what you know is in your heart. You will make me proud with how you live your life. And I will be watching you, smiling.

TK-421: I will, after I retire, I will live how you lived. I will make a difference and I will help anyone who needs it. I will do this for you.

The lights go dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: She passed 5 weeks later, in her sleep while holding my hand. She left a note on the table that read “You don’t have to wait to start making a difference.”

Scene Seven

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: After Kahlan passed, it’s like my mind was turned off and I was a robot. Just going through the motions. I always would just tell myself that I just needed to make it to retirement. Then I could be happy again and start doing good. I got a little surprise though when I got to my new and last duty station. The Death Star.

The lights come on to a docking bay hangar. A small shuttle is on the right. The door to the shuttle opens and out walks TK-421. As he reaches the bottom of the ramp, he hears someone call to him.

TK-422: 421! Is that really you?

TK-421: 422? What are you doing here?

TK-422: I just got here a couple days ago, can you believe the size of this station? It’s like a small moon!

TK-421: It is pretty incredible, just a shame its purpose is to destroy planets.

TK-422: Always so positive 421, just like I remember you! We have a lot of catching up to do.

TK-421: That we do. You’re the first person I’ve seen again since training.

TK-422: Speaking of that, you remember that empty-headed of a trooper TK-435?

TK-421: Of course.

TK-422: Well did you hear what happened to him?

TK-421: No, did he eat a whole bantha by himself or something?

TK-422: No, they executed him!

TK-421: What?!

TK-422: Yeah, when he was on Tattooine, I guess they were looking for these two droids that were involved with the rebellion somehow.

TK-421: Droids? Like battle droids?

TK-422: No, that’s the thing. It was just some protocol droid and a little astro droid. Apparently they were carrying information to the rebellion. Anyways, it turns out that he let those two droids, an old man, and some kid that was with them, get away and escape the planet!

TK-421: Why would he do that?

TK-422: He said that he doesn’t remember letting them go and claims that he was forced to. Ha! Like some old hermit on Tattooine is secretly going to be a Jedi who got away all these years. So, of course they didn’t believe him and Darth Vader himself executed him.

TK-421: Wow, I wasn’t fond of the guy, but I didn’t want him dead.

TK-422: Guess some people just can’t handle the stress of being a trooper and it messes with their head.

TK-421: Guess so.

TK-422: Anyways, I’ll show you where the barracks are at so you can put your stuff away, then we can head to the galley and catch up.

The two walk offstage as the lights fade to black. TK-421’s voice is heard.

TK-421: It took me a few years after Kahlan passed to finally start to be able to be happy about things, and 422 definitely sped that up and helped me through it. But I still always felt like a part of myself couldn’t truly be happy again until I could get out and do what I promised her.

Scene Eight

The stage is dark and you hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: It’s a happy day when it’s your last day before retirement. Serving for 20 years gives you a nice little paycheck every month. And knowing that after that day, you can finally be free to do what you want and be your own person, well, it’s a great feeling. To finally be able to move onto something that would make Kahlan proud.

The lights come on to what looks like a galley. TK-421 and TK-422 are sitting at the table in the middle eating and conversing.

TK-422: So this is it, the last half of your last day. Don’t forget to enjoy this lovely looking sludge they call food here.

TK-421: Oh yes, I’m sure that’s what I’ll be missing most when I’m grilling my own bantha steaks.

(TK-422 laughs then groans.)

TK-422: Sounds nice man.

TK-421: Then why didn’t you get out as well?

TK-422: I thought I could, but… I don’t know anything else besides being a soldier, it’s what I am. I don’t know what I would do with myself. You don’t feel that way?

TK-421: No, I know now, I know what I’ve always really wanted this whole time but was too blind. Kahlan reminded me of who I was, of what I wanted to do with my life. I want to finally help others, not hurt or scare them. I want to make a difference, if not for myself, for Kahlan.

(An alarm sounds and a voice comes on the intercom.)

Intercom: Attention all available Troopers, we have intercepted an incoming vessel in our tractor beam. It is going to be docked in docking bay 327. We need to all available Troops to docking bay 327 for a vessel search and apprehension of the crew.

TK-422: Ooo sounds like some action. TK-421: That I don’t need on my last day.

TK-422: Well we don’t have much of a choice. We have to go.

TK-421: Okay, okay. Let’s go then. Let me just finish the last sludge I’ll ever eat here. They both walk out of the scene as the lights go dark.

The lights come on to a scene that looks to be a big hangar with the ship, the Millennium Falcon, on the right and Stormtroopers in a formation with an officer in front of them giving them orders on the left. TK-421 and TK-422 are seen walking up late to the group. The officer, a lieutenant, turns towards them and speaks.

Lieutenant: Well how nice of you two to join us. You know, just cause it’s your last day here doesn’t mean you can slack off, TK-421.

TK-422: Calm down son, he was just enjoying his last fine meal upon this lovely station.

Lieutenant: That’s Lieutenant to you, TK-422. I’d be sure to remember that if I were you, as you’re not the one that’s retiring tomorrow and can still be thrown in the brig.

TK-422: Why, I oughta call your mothe--

TK-421: Yes sir, Lieutenant. He’ll make sure to heed your advice and sorry for being late.

(The Lieutenant gives them a look, then faces the formation again.)

Lieutenant: Very well, just get into formation.

TK-421: Yes sir.

(The two move around towards the back of the formation and TK-422 whispers to TK-421.)

TK-422: Why’d you cut me off for? I was about to put him in his place.

TK-421: Which would have embarrassed him and caused him to do something rash and punish both of us. It’s my last day here, I’d really not like to spend it cleaning toilets.

TK-422: Very well, I just wanted to have some fun. I’m going to miss messing with the young guns with you. Just like old times.

TK-421: I know, me too.

(They go quiet as the Lieutenant starts talking to the formation.)

Lieutenant: We just found this vessel coming out of hyperspace right where Alderaan used to be, before we destroyed it. The markings match those of a ship that blasted its way out of Mos Eisley. So be careful when you board, they could be armed and dangerous. Now go on in.

(The formation breaks up and starts to enter the ship. The Lieutenant stops TK-421 and TK-422 from going in.)

Lieutenant: Except you two. I need someone to watch the entrance to the ship.

TK-422: Aw, come on. No one’s going to sneak out from there and you know it.

Lieutenant: Well maybe you’ll be on time to where you need to be next time.

(The Lieutenant walks away. TK-421 and TK-422 walk to the loading ramp of the ship and stand guard.)

TK-421: It’s fine, I wouldn’t want to get shot on my last day anyways.

TK-422: Yeah, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a little going away firefight? For old time’s sake.

TK-421: Sorry 422, I just don’t really have much of a desire to kill anyone anymore. Not after Kahlan.

TK-422: I guess it does get tiring.

(The Stormtroopers that went into the ship earlier come out and report that there’s no one in the ship and the logs show that the crew abandoned ship right after takeoff. Darth Vader comes in to the scene and the Lieutenant walks over to him and gives the report.)

Darth Vader: Were there any droids on board?

Lieutenant: No, sir. If there were any, they must have also jettisoned.

Darth Vader: Send a scanning crew aboard. I want every part of this ship checked.

Lieutenant: Yes, sir.

Darth Vader: I sense something… A presence I have not felt since—

(Darth Vader walks out of the scene. The Lieutenant turns to the Stormtroopers.)

Lieutenant: Get me a scanning crew in here. I want every part of this ship checked.

(The Stormtroopers start running around and searching the ship. After a little while the Troopers come back out and state that there’s no one on it.)

TK-421: They’re putting in a lot of effort for this little freighter.

TK-422: Well you know how it is, Darth Vader feels something with his magic then it has to be true.

TK-421: Better not let him hear you talking about the force like that.

TK-422: Or what? He’ll use it to choke me when he’s not her—

(TK-422 grabs his throat and starts acting like he’s being choked. They both start laughing.)

TK-421: Oh, look out. Here comes the scanning crew.

(A scanning crew of two people walk past TK-421 and TK-422 and into the ship. After a few seconds there is a loud thump and someone calls down to them.)

Voice: Hey, down there.

(TK-421 and TK-422 look at each other then move to the front of the ramp.)

Voice: Could you give us a hand with this?

(TK-421 motions with his head to go up, and they walk up the ramp out of sight.)

Lights go dark. You hear TK-421’s voice.

TK-421: I only saw the smuggler pointing the blaster at me an instant before he fired. I guess an instant is all you need for your life to flash before your eyes, and for you to realize that you never got to live the life you wanted. To wish, that you just would have followed what you really wanted to do. That you would have listened and not waited for the “right time” to start making a difference. That you will never be able to fulfill your promise you made. The noise of a few blaster shots fire and you hear thuds from bodies dropping to the floor.

After a recent visit to the ER due to a esophageal stricter which scared us thinking Chest pain! Spent 16 hours being observed and tested! Finally send down to endoscopy for a esophageal dilation! Did the job!! I was sent home 4 hours later! Now two weeks later I get a phone call from my Primary care Doctors office manager saying that my primary received a memo from my health insurance (after my ER visit) company and I was instructed to call and make an appointment for alcoholism counseling???? The night of the incident where I couldn't swallow, and was in pain! we had guests over and had a few beers! I gave the attending ER doctor all information including I had drank beer an hour before I got there. OK, now, For the 16 hours at the hospital and the multiple blood tests, everybody including the Dr's said everything looked good! and the Dr. that discharged me explained to my wife in detail about my blood work, said things were fine. So, why would my CHP (Capital Health Plan) health insurance company be contacting my primary? Especially about alcoholism counseling, this has NEVER been an issue in the past! I'm so upset! I've been with my primary for over 15 years and due to a knee injury he prescribes me mild pain killers, and Florida Law makes him take a urine sample every 3 months! Again this has never come up. Long story short, a guy ran his car off the road into my front yard and hit a tree. The tree is a complete loss. He has insurance (thank god!). How much should I expect to receive from the insurance company for the value of the tree? The tree is a mature Blue Spruce. It was about 20-25 feet tall, had an 8-10 inch trunk, and a spread at the base of about 15 feet or so. I know that I should at least be entitled to the cost of removing the tree/debris and planting a new tree. But you cant really plant a 25 foot Blue Spruce! Last year I had Unitrin Direct....they were charging me $85 a month...this is with NO tickets or accidents for the last 5 years of my driving record....this is also with the BASIC insurance that you need in Florida...10/10/20...NO collision...and a $1000 deductible..... So at the end of my 6 months...it was time for a renewal...they tried to bump me up to $140 a month for no reason...still no accidents/tickets...nothing had changed...i had expected my rate to DECREASE....they tell me it's a STATEWIDE INCREASE ......so i called around... Ended up switching to Allstate who has been charging me $90 a month (better than $140 right?).....6 months go by, everything's cool.....now my policy renewal is coming up and they're trying to tell me i need to pay $160 a month for their basic insurance. Are you kidding me? And according to them it's another STATEWIDE INSURANCE INCREASE ...... They also told me that it could be due to not having CONSECUTIVE insurance for the last few years, as in...I switched from State Farm to Unitrin to Allstate......they told me call the state insurance commissioner...which I did.... Chapter 1: Unsettled New Normal

Growing up as Sam Avery's son wasn't easy for TK. His abusive upbringing left him with a wealth of trauma that he couldn't bring himself to face, even as an adult, but for all the bad, TK's life in Austin brought him a lot of good. He married his high school sweetheart, Carlos, and he became a firefighter like he had always dreamt he would be. But for all he had managed to make something of his life, there's still a hurt, lost child inside TK, a child who wants to found, and mostly, that child wants to be loved.

(I have rewritten the first several chapters, which have been condensed into one chapter, and then, I will be adding new content starting in chapter 2).

Chapter 1: Unsettled New Normal

It had been three months since T.K. had any drugs or alcohol, and he was long past the withdrawal phase of getting better, but it still made him sick to think that he could never touch a drug again. It’s going to stick this time, he promised himself. It never sticks, the critical voice in his head added. You always mess up, so you might as well just give up now. Despite the nagging thought that he was doomed for failure, T.K. didn’t have plans to go back to his old ways, and in that moment, he didn’t want to do drugs ever again. But the thought that he could never have substances again without the risk of a complete spiral made T.K.’s hands shake with apprehension. He thought of all the wedding toasts he’d have to miss, all the nights getting wasted in clubs in a way that was called fun instead of abuse, and all late nights with a date and a bottle of wine. Oxy was easier to escape in normal social functions, but he’d always be a little too fond at the mere thought of it.

There was an itchiness that prickled his core, pulling at his middle with a sloppy mix of feelings he couldn’t distinguish beyond being uncomfortable. The itch made him restless, and without the time-warp of being high, T.K. didn’t know how to keep himself busy. But he still stayed away from substances. All of them. He hadn’t even had coffee; though, he knew his resolve wouldn’t last on that front because there was only so much abstinence that he could he handle and only so much hollowness that he could take. He would need something eventually, even if that thing was a weak, watery stand-in for what he wanted. He’d knew that he’d always be an addict.

He didn’t mind being clean—sober, he reminded himself because the substances had never been what made his skin feel grimy and his insides feel like dust was perpetually compacted in all the hollow spaces—but sobriety would always bore him, like driving through a flat stretch of middle-America in a silent car on an overcast day, but it was better than the alternative. T.K. couldn’t put Carlos through more than he already had, so he suffered through the restlessness and tried to remind himself why he didn’t want to die.

The boredom had worsened since T.K. wasn’t working. T.K. yearned to return to the 126, even though he knew it was going to bring up thoughts that he’d tried to chase away with substances and an ill-fated overdose/suicide attempt. Working would give him something to do. His mind still whirled with the memory of that day, but sitting at home made him feel useless. Guilt ate at him as he thought about Carlos at work while T.K. sat on his ass. He wasn’t fulfilling his role in their household. I’m going to change that. I’ll go back to work, and some of the colors will come back into my life. It won’t always be this gray.

Bouncing his leg up and down to rid his body of some its excess energy, T.K. was not-so-patiently waiting for his husband to come home. He hated how trapped in his thoughts he became when no one else was around to keep his head away from everything else. He could have called Carlos’ mother. She’d decided to work less when she turned fifty-five, but it drove her crazy to have nothing to do, so Andrea Reyes would have gladly come over to keep T.K. company if he had asked. She’d been doing that a lot lately, probably at Carlos’ behest, but T.K. didn’t want to burden anyone with his issues more than he had to. I’ve been doing that enough lately.

T.K. couldn’t stop checking his phone. Carlos was late, and T.K. couldn’t stop himself from thinking the worst. He imagined Carlos blown up or shot down, and he couldn’t get the idea out of his head that something bad had happened. Carlos was the kind of guy to be on time, and while being a social worker meant that Carlos had some late nights, he usually told T.K. if he got caught up in something at work, and ever since the explosion, Carlos had been cutting those late nights short. T.K. knew it was because Carlos worried what would happen if T.K. was alone too long. Selfishly, T.K. was relieved when Carlos came home early, even if he insisted it wasn’t necessary.

He thought it would be good to get dinner started, but T.K. knew his limits, and he knew he wasn’t the best cook. He could throw together a meal if things had returned to normal, but he still had trouble motivating his body to do the things that he asked of it, so he sat with his worry. Every separation sends a fresh surge of anxiety through each of them, but they were trying to be better.

Still, there was only so much that T.K. could take, so he exhaled when Carlos came through the door, carrying a couple bags of groceries on the floor when T.K. got up and threw his arms around Carlos in record time. T.K. smiled. “Babe, hi.”

Carlos returned the smile and kissed T.K. on the forehead. “Sorry, I’m late. I had to stop at the store and get some stuff for dinner.”

“I wasn’t worried,” T.K. said too quickly.

“Your hands are shaking.”

“Just fidgety,” T.K. said, hoping there was no waver in his voice.

“You can’t lie to your husband.”

“You weren’t home, and I just thought—” T.K. shook his head. “It’s been hard.”

“I’m okay. You’re okay. Right?”

T.K. rubbed Carlos’ shoulders, trying to ease the knots. “Yeah, I’m okay. I’m glad you’re home. I’m bored here all alone.” After giving T.K. another kiss, Carlos moved to the kitchen to put away the groceries and start dinner. He pulled out a pot, filling it with water and putting it on the burner.

T.K. followed Carlos to the kitchen. “What are you making?”

“Macaroni and cheese.”

T.K. felt warmth radiate in his chest, and he wanted to pull his husband to bed and never leave. “That’s the second time this week.”

“Are you getting sick of it?” Carlos said and then yawned.

“You know it’s my favorite.” One of T.K.’s earliest memories was being around three years old, and his mom made him macaroni and cheese. He remembered little about his mother. She was gone shortly after that memory, but macaroni and cheese always made him think of her. He remembered her smiling at him as she put the food in the bowl in front of him. “I ate it every day for two months after I left home. I didn’t get sick of it then, and I won’t get sick of it now either.”

Carlos ignited the burner, and as the fire fanned out before settling to its normal intensity, T.K. felt his heartbeat trot, and he couldn’t take his eyes from the flame.

“About leaving home. There’s something you should know.” Carlos’ tone was dark in a way that it hadn’t been since T.K.’s dad had turned up to their wedding uninvited two years prior. A shiver ran through his spine. “I saw your dad today. He’s back in town.” T.K.’s eyes snapped up.

T.K. fell back onto a stool next to the counter. “Oh?” he said, voice pulled like a rubber band just before it snapped. “I haven’t seen him since the wedding.”

“I heard he went to Florida.”

“He’s here now,” Carlos replied somberly. “I don’t know for how long or why, but he’s here.”

“Did you talk to him?” T.K. prayed the answer was no. He didn’t want Carlos to get too close. T.K. didn’t think Carlos was in danger, but Sam Avery was toxic.

Carlos shook his head. “I wouldn’t have been able to say anything good, so it’s probably best that I didn’t, but no, I just saw him at the market. He didn’t even acknowledge me.”

“I’m not even sure he knows your name. He only acknowledges me when he wants to make my life hell.” T.K. wasn’t bitter. He really wasn’t. He was tired of the bullshit that his dad brought into his life. “I wish that bastard would get out of Austin.”

“He should be in jail.” Carlos set a second pot for the cheese sauce down on the stovetop with a thud. T.K. startled. “Sorry,” Carlos said, looking guilty. The water on the stove was boiling, bubbles becoming more aggressive.

“I don’t want him in jail, but I want him away from me,” T.K. replied. “I can’t let him back into my life.” I can’t deal with him and staying sober. I’ll lose my mind if he tries to pry his way back into my life.

“I won’t let him get near you,” Carlos promised, and T.K. knew that for all Carlos meant his words that his dad wasn’t the type of guy who respected boundaries. If his dad wanted to get to T.K., he probably would. T.K. didn’t think the old drunkard cared enough to go out of his way, though. He was hoping desperately that that’s the case. Sam had told T.K. that he wasn’t worth the time hundreds of times, and T.K. didn’t want to be worth the time.

Carlos poured the macaroni into the pot, and the water foamed before settling.

“I’m not a helpless little kid anymore,” T.K.’s voice trembled. He was not one, but the helpless little kid lived inside him, scared and hoping that someone would care enough to let him out of the dark room he’d been shoved into. “I don’t know why he still gets to me.”

“It’s normal to hold onto things. I’m still mad at Willie Johnson for throwing a rock at my head in first grade.”

“Willie Johnson is has always been a jerk. I’d be mad too.”

“Yeah, but if I can hold on to that memory, it’s normal that you’d still feel hurt over the things your dad did, which were a hell of a lot worse than a rock to the head in first grade.”

“Dad wasn’t that bad.” You’ve always been sensitive. He only hurt you because you were too sensitive.

“I won’t spare any kind words for that man.”

“He’s still my dad.”

Carlos bit his lip as he put the milk, salt, pepper, cornstarch, and ground mustard into the roux pot and brought that mix to a boil. He got out the block of sharp white cheddar and shred it, taking his frustrations out on the cheese.

“What are you not telling me?”

Carlos put the cheese down. “I think you should get a restraining order.”

“That’s a little much, don’t you think?”

“What if he finds us here?” Carlos asked. “I don’t trust that he won’t track us down.”

“What’s he going to do? He’s got a lot of bark but not a lot of bite.” T.K. shook his head. “A restraining order won’t keep him away. If he wants to find us, he will, regardless of what the law says. He might break the order just to spite the law.”

“He’s dangerous,” Carlos said, voice going shrill. “We nearly had to cancel our wedding because you were so terrified to see him when he showed up unannounced.”

“He doesn’t scare me,” T.K. insisted. “He’s nothing I can’t handle.”

“You shouldn’t have to handle him, and I don’t want to handle him if I don’t have to.”

“He wouldn’t hurt you.”

“I’m not worried about me.”

“You don’t have to worry.”

“It’s my thing to worry. You know that.”

“Let’s talk about how you are,” T.K. diverted the conversation. “How was work? I hope it wasn’t too bad.” Carlos had had a hard week the week before. A child in one family he worked with had died tragically, and it had been no one’s fault, but it had left Carlos feeling guilty that he hadn’t done more.

“It was okay,” Carlos replied with a sigh. “Better than last week.”

“That’s good.” T.K. pressed his lips against Carlos’ neck. He caught a whiff of Carlos’ cologne, and it reminded him of a smell he used to know, but he hadn’t been able to figure out what it was. He just knew it made him feel calm.

“As much as I love having you kiss me. I’m trying to make dinner,” Carlos said with a laugh, swatting T.K. away with a dish towel.

“Fine. Have it your way,” T.K. pulled away slowly, already missing the closeness. “That’s the last time I try to make you feel better after a hard day.”

“Being with you always makes me feel better,” Carlos replied in a tone that was so earnest that T.K. could hardly believe that Carlos was his husband. “I’m feeling less stressed already.”

“You should have asked me to go to the store. It’s not like I had anything to do.”

Carlos shrugged. “I don’t mind.”

“Yeah, but you’re so busy, and I’m just sitting around being useless.”

“You’re not useless.” They’d had a fight about this several times since the explosion. You do nothing to help this household. It makes no sense that Carlos has been so patient and sticks around.

“You have to say that. You married me, but what do I do? I’m not making any money. I can’t cook. I can barely even leave the house. The only thing I do is my job.”

“That’s a bunch of bullshit, T.K. You’ll be back in action soon. You’re recovering. And there’s nothing wrong with that.”

“Work will probably be bad too. Did you hear that they’re bringing in some guy from New York to run the new 126? That’s what Judd told me.”

“Oh? How’s Judd doing.”

“Pissed that they’re bringing some stranger in to be our captain.”

“Are you pissed?”

“Obviously. It’s a slap in the face. That’s what it is. That man is going to ruin everything. He doesn’t get how it is here in Texas. Austin is progressive, but we’re still in Texas. I give it three weeks before he realizes that he’s not cut out to work here.” T.K. hadn’t been born in Texas, but it is the only home he could remember, and he didn’t like the idea of an outsider coming in and flipping everything on its head. They’d had enough changes.

Carlos shrugged. “Maybe he’ll be nice.”

T.K. shot him an “Are you serious?” look. “He’s probably going to think he’s the best thing since sliced bread, and I don’t want to work for a guy who has attitude.”

“You have attitude,” Carlos replied with a laugh, bumping T.K. playfully with his hip. He poured the macaroni and cheese mix into a casserole dish before adding bread crumbs and putting it all in the oven.

T.K. crossed his arms, looking petulant. “Well, I’m not in charge, am I? My attitude won’t get anyone killed. That job should go to Judd. He’s an actual leader. Not some city guy who got his position by charming the pants off his superiors. Like, come on, New York? Why would a New Yorker want to come here? Judd knows what it’s like here.” T.K. didn’t see any reasons why Judd shouldn’t get the promotion that he was next in line for.

“Do you think Judd would even want it? Grace tells me he’s been having a tough time with everything. Being captain is a lot of pressure.”

“Our team died. Of course, he’s having a hard time, but he’s fine now. He told me so. He’s ready to get back to work, and I’m going to be right beside him. I’m just glad we’ll have each other.”

“He’s struggling more than he lets on. Grace doesn’t think he’s ready to go back”

T.K. raised his eyebrows. “Grace said that?”

“He won’t do his required therapy.”

“They won’t let him back until he does. It sucks, but all you have to do is tell ‘em what they want to hear and then you’re done.”

“That better not be the attitude you use when you go to therapy.”

Carlos was careful with what he said next. “Do you think you’re ready to go back?”

T.K. felt a sudden rush of guilt. “Babe, there’s something I need to tell you.”

“What is it?” Carlos looked nervous.

“I’m going back tomorrow,” T.K. confessed.

“What the hell, T.K.?” Carlos asked. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” T.K. had been trying to tell Carlos for a week, but he knew Carlos would think that it was too soon, so he’d delayed it until he could delay it no more. He’d never meant for it to become such a big secret, but like any secret, it had a life of its own.

“It was short notice, but I’ve been doing my therapy, so the captain agreed we could try to see what happens.”

“You nearly died twice.”

“The overdose was a lapse in judgement and the explosion was a freak accident. Neither will happen again.” You know it’s only a matter of time before you fall off the wagon. I wouldn’t do that to Carlos. You can’t help yourself.

“Judd won’t be your boss. The new guy is, so you’ll have to listen to him. Are you ready for that?”

“He saved my life, so I’m going to be loyal to him above all others, and the new captain better learn to deal with that.” Judd had shielded T.K. with his own body, protecting him from the worst of the explosion. T.K. owed Judd his life, and he was going to be bitter on his friend’s behalf about this new guy rolling in and stealing what was rightfully Judd’s.

“If you need more time off, we can make it work. You don’t have to go back right now.”

“We can’t make it work. You don’t exactly get paid a lot, and I can’t just sit at home all day.”

“Whatever you need, we can make it work.”

“I need to get back to work, Carlos.”

“I don’t want you to feel like you have to go back before you’re ready.” T.K. could hear the anxiety in Carlos’ voice, and he knew that Carlos had nightmares about T.K. dying in the explosion.

“I need to get back to living a real life, not just my sad, pathetic existence.”

 “If you say you’re ready, I’ll support you.” Carlos swallowed. “But I won’t deny that I’m nervous about you going back.”

T.K. took Carlos’ hand, pulling Carlos closer. “I’m ready. I promise. I was born to do this, and I won’t let shit that’s happened in the past stand in my way. I feel purposeless, and I need to get that purpose back.”

“Will you keep going to therapy?”

“If that makes you feel better.”

“I want it to make you feel better.”

T.K. leaned up to kiss Carlos. “That’s why I married you. You always want me to be better. You make me better”

“I thought it was because I could cook?”

T.K. kissed him again. “That was just a perk.”

“Are you nervous?” Carlos asked.

 “You know me. I jump into things and don’t look back.” T.K. shook his head. “No, I’m not nervous.”

Walking into the firehouse the next morning felt strange after months away. T.K. hadn’t been there since the memorial service for the lost members. T.K. felt like Dorothy walking into Oz as he stared at the firehouse’s facelift, but instead of awe, dread was the only emotion that T.K. could make out.

The fire station felt like a hotel that he was passing through more than a second home where he’d be spending huge chunks of his time. He couldn’t deny that the arrangement was impressive, but the transformation only made him bitter. Lives couldn’t be covered up with a fresh coat of paint.

Before he could even get his bearings, the Owen Strand pulled him into his office, offering a hand and a too chipper grin. Reluctantly, T.K. shook his new captain’s hand. He hadn’t been raised with many manners, but he wasn’t an idiot either. He knew to play nice with his boss. “Owen Strand,” Owen introduced himself. “Please, have a seat.”

T.K. sat in a chair that looked too nice to be comfortable. He didn’t want to have whatever conversation Owen wanted to have. It wasn’t like T.K. has done anything yet. He hadn’t had the chance to let his impulses get him in trouble with this stupid New Yorker who was probably going to be the downfall of the entire station. Because based on the aesthetic of the firehouse, T.K. had to wonder if Owen was a leader who probably cared more about appearances and firehouse statistics more than he cared about the work itself.

They wouldn’t even start taking calls for another week because Owen thought it was important that they had team bonding and the kind of crap that T.K. thought was a waste of energy. They’d be doing training sessions, which were better than the getting to know each other games that were also on the agenda. Endurance exercises would keep his mind off everything else, but the trust exercises made him want to scream.

The captain was looking at him with an unreadable expression, and it was too early for a stare-off, so the way the captain was looking at him only made T.K. angrier because he’s too tired for games. T.K. hated men like that who looked at you like they could break you down by looking at you long enough. “Good morning, T.K.” Owen’s voice was bubbly, as if the firehouse wasn’t still haunted by all the people it has lost. T.K.’s was not sure that he’d ever be able to smile like that without guilt. It’s not like his life gave him a lot to smile about, anyway.

T.K. crossed his arms and uncrossed them because he didn’t want to look like a petulant kid. “What am I here for?” T.K. asked, not wanting to extend any pleasantries. He wasn’t there to make nice. He was there to do his job, and that’s exactly what he was going to do. I’ll show him I’m okay, but I don’t have to pretend I like him. He didn’t want to make friends or talk to his boss about things that didn’t matter. Owen Strand wanted to be Mr. Popular, and T.K. would not let him have that title easily. T.K. couldn’t be bribed with gourmet coffee makers and a variety of milks.

Owen has the gall to crack another smile. T.K. doesn’t return one. He can’t. He won’t. “I thought I should inform you that Judd won’t be coming back yet.” He hadn’t talked to Judd, but he’d figured that part out based on the conversation he’d had with Carlos the night before.

“Yeah, I know.” T.K. kept his voice stoic. “And I probably would’ve noticed that when I didn’t see him here.”

“I thought you should know that my decision not to bring Judd back right now doesn’t mean he’ll never be back.”

“Great, thanks for letting me know. Can I go now?”

“But that’s not why I called you in here. It’s not the only reason, at least.”

“Then what is? I’m not in the mood for small talk.”

“I want Judd to take care of his mental health. That was the major reason I would not let him back. He wasn’t taking his trauma seriously.” T.K. wanted to tell Owen off.

“It’s hard not to take trauma seriously. It’s always serious. That’s what makes it trauma.”

“I didn’t mean it like that. All I mean is that he needs more time to get his head back to where it needs to be.”

“You think I’m better than he is?” T.K. wasn’t sure he was much better than Judd. Maybe he was better at hiding the haunted look in his eyes. He’d been doing it his whole life. I know how to seem okay. It’s one of my greatest talents.

“You’ve been doing what the department requires, and that’s why I let you come back.” Owen kept his tone cool. “I’m not trying to be the bad guy here, T.K.”

“Yeah? And?” He still doesn’t know why Owen is wasting his time with this. “I still don’t get why you called me in here.”

“Being here doesn’t mean that I’m going to ignore well-being. I need you to take your mental health seriously too. You’ve done your required therapy, but I need you to keep taking care of that. If you have issues, you need to be upfront about them or else this won’t work. I need to know that I can trust you.” What about me trusting you? How am I supposed to do that?

T.K. rolled his eyes. “What my personal life is like isn’t your business. Everyone’s got baggage, and it’s not your business how I deal with it.”

“It is if it impedes what we’re doing here. I believe we all need to be on the same page. Are you willing to be a team player?”

“I would never let my issues get in the way with my job.”

“I know you wouldn’t intentionally, but—"

“But nothing. I’m fine, and this isn’t something I want to talk about with someone I’ve just met. What happened was awful, but I’m ready to move on because it doesn’t help anyone to live in the past.”

“T.K., you’re young and you’re resilient, but trauma is still trauma. I’ve been through it myself. I know what it’s like to lose your whole crew.” He pauses, looking choked up. “I know what it’s like to lose everything important to you.”

“Then, you know that sometimes you don’t want to be coddled. You just want to move on.”

“I also know that sometimes no matter how hard you try, you can’t move. I don’t want you to be stuck.”

“I’m nothing like you,” T.K. spat. “And the problems that you think I have are just you problems.”

Owen didn’t let T.K.’s comment rile him up. “Maybe you’re right, but I’m here if you need to talk. I’m here for anyone on my team.”

“I won’t, and if I do, it won’t be to you because I don’t trust you. You just rolled into Austin like you owned the place. It doesn’t make sense that you’d want to come to Austin, of all places. This would be a downgrade to a New Yorker, so unless you were on the verge of being fired, I can’t see why you’d take this job other than having a hero complex.” T.K. absolutely shouldn’t talk to his new boss that way, but he’d never been good at keeping his mouth shut.

“I appreciate your honesty, so I’m going to be honest with you. I’m not here because I want to be a hero. I’m here because I needed a fresh start. New York has a lot of hard memories for me. I was holding onto a lot of things that I needed to let go of, so when the opportunity arose, I made the most drastic change that I’ve ever faced. This new station can be a fresh start for you too. And Judd.”

T.K. remained testy. “I didn’t ask for your sob story.” He was being an asshole because that how he gets whenever he has any negative feelings. Like father like son, I guess.

Owen gave T.K. a sympathetic smile. “Trust me. I didn’t give it,” and T.K. knew that there was something to unpack there, but someone else’s trauma wasn’t something he has any business digging into. Besides, he really didn’t care to know anything more about Owen Strand than he already did.

By the end of the shift, all T.K. could think about was how big of an asshole Owen Strand was. Owen was the type of guy who everyone thought was so amazing. He grinned, and he cracked jokes with the crew. He wasn’t afraid to dive into a dangerous situation, and he had all the makings of a ruggedly handsome fifty-something hero. For all the things that outwardly seemed cool about Owen Strand, he was grandiose, and T.K. recognized the carefully practiced smile of someone who had a dark history that hadn’t yet found its way to a light present.

Trying not to think of his captain, T.K. got in his car, and he could hardly believe how much he wanted to go home after being so insistent about needing to get out of the house. He went ten miles per hour over the speed limit and rushed in through the door with fresh rage he could never seem to shake. Carlos looked up as he threw his keys onto their hook and missed the hook, letting the keys hit the floor. He groaned and didn’t pick them up.

“Hey,” Carlos said, voice cautious. “How was today?” T.K. didn’t want to talk about it, but he also had no ability to keep his mouth shut.

T.K. throws his hands up, gesticulating wildly. “He wants to change the entire station with his espresso machine and new age crap like that would make things any better. He thinks Judd isn’t ready to come back. How crazy is that? Judd lives to be a firefighter.”

“What about you?” Carlos asked.

“What about me?” T.K. blared. He clenched his fists, already losing it when the conversation has barely started.

“Does he think you’re ready to come back?”

“He looked skeptical, but he didn’t say I wasn’t. He let me stay for the shift, but all we did was fucking bonding exercises. But it helped that I’d actually gone to my therapy. I didn’t tell him that my social worker boyfriend pushed me into it.” T.K. crossed his arms. “What does he know anyway? This guy thinks that he’s an expert on mental health. Like, you can’t tell just by looking at a person how well they are is doing. He told me that he still had concerns about me, but with Judd, he just flat out said that he wasn’t ready. How unfair is that? Judd’s been there since he got out of high school. It’s not like he’s forgotten how to fight fires. Most of the time we’re just doing medical calls and crowd control.”

“Maybe he’s right.” T.K. looked at Carlos like he was a traitor.

“Whose side are you on?” T.K. felt like a raw nerve. He’d felt like one since he was a child, and now, he kept blowing up at the people he loved the most, and ever since the explosion, he’d been worse. He dreaded opening his mouth because he didn’t know when something red hot would spew out before he could stop it.

“Yours. I’m always on yours, but what you went through was traumatic, and—”

“And nothing! You don’t get to define my trauma by telling me how I should feel or that I’m not ready to go back to work. I’m ready! I’m tired of sitting at home like an invalid. You don’t get how crazy I’ve been going here.” The comfort of being home was short-lived, apparently.

“I know that it’s been hard.”

“It’s been the worst time of my life, and you know what my childhood was like.”

“Maybe the captain won’t be as bad as you think.”

“Maybe he’ll be worse. What does a city slicker know about running a fire department in Texas? He’s going to ruin everything we built. The station looks like it’s from an architecture catalog, but that won’t do  much when he lets the station go to hell with poor management.”

“One man can’t destroy the whole firehouse all on his own.”

“He’s hired outsiders. He searched across the country. What’s the matter with people we have here?”

“You don’t like your coworkers.”

“They’re fine, but that’s not the point. They don’t get what it’s like here either. These people don’t feel like family.”

“It takes time to get to know people. Isn’t it better that he’s looking for completely fresh faces instead of trying to replace the old ones?”

“No. Owen Strand has only just started, and he’s already making a mess of things.”

“He’ll adapt, and he’ll have you to help him.” At least T.K. still had a job to show up to. Judd’s prospects were a lot less settled. Owen Strand didn’t seem to change his mind easily.

“I have a policy about not doing favors for bastards.” T.K. said, plopping his body on the couch next to Carlos.

“You wouldn’t be doing a favor for a bastard. You’d be doing a favor for the people of this city. Even if this new guy doesn’t need it, they need your help.” T.K. wasn’t going to let people down no matter how awful he felt about the whole situation. He was the best person for the job, which was why he was going to have to play nice and vent his frustrations when he came home from work at night.

“I know, but it’s still going to suck. I’m too hot-blooded for this. God, I’m just like my dad.” Carlos pulls T.K.’s body away from his so that they can look at each other eye to eye.

“You’re nothing like him. You can get passionate, but you don’t hurt innocent people when you get mad, and you care about people other than yourself. I wouldn’t have married you if you were like him.”

“Yeah, well, I’m sure my mom didn’t intend on getting stuck with an abusive deadbeat either. It’s no wonder she... left me.” T.K. wondered how much he was like his mother. If he married to a man like Sam Avery, he figured he would have given up on life as well.

Carlos kissed T.K.’s temple. “You’re the best husband. I’m lucky to have you.”

T.K. leaned his head against Carlos’ chest. “I’m even luckier to have you. You put up with my craziness.”

Carlos smiled. “For now, and forever.”

“Life’s never going to be the same, is it?” T.K. couldn’t help but ask.

Carlos holds T.K. closer. “No, I don’t think that it is, but it could be good in its own way.”

“We’ll see about that, but I can’t shake the feeling that everything’s going to go up in flame.” In T.K.’s experience, never good lasted when the bad was so insistent on taking the joy.

One Monday later, Judd was finally allowed back after Grace had convinced the captain to let Judd came back, meaning that T.K. would have at least one ally at work. That knowledge did little to sweeten T.K.’s sour mood. T.K. had just had the weekend off, so going back to work for another week with Captain Thinks He’s Cool But Is Actually an Asshole was not T.K.’s idea of a good time.

Usually, he liked his job. He enjoyed helping people, and every time he saved someone else, T.K. felt like he was rescuing himself from parts of himself that he didn’t like to consider—his impulsiveness, his addictiveness, his restlessness. But with all the changes, T.K. felt little when he worked. There was a hollowness in his core that T.K. couldn’t fill as effortlessly as he once could. Work didn’t make him feel in control anymore. It made him worry that he was seconds away from a spiral because firefighting was once solid ground, but it had become a collapsed building, full of accidents waiting to happen.

The day was off to a bad start. A house fire left T.K. in a bad mood, but he didn’t think about that. Reminding himself of the details would only cause his brain to spiral, and he had a shift to finish. You need to stop being so crazy and get your act together. If you don’t get it together, you’re going to make a fatal mistake. T.K. wasn’t sure his job would ever be the same. What if I can never do my job normally again. What if I’m broken?

I should be dead, was the mantra repeating in his mind. It had been there for longer than he would have admitted. There was no reason why he had lived while his family had died in that catastrophic explosion. Every single person in that crew had been better than T.K. a million times over. T.K. was lucky to have known them all, and their acceptance of him had proven that life is happier when the best part of it was the people who surround you. They brought out the best in him, and then, they were gone. Now, T.K. was left with Carlos, Judd, and a mountain of issues that he had to battle. He couldn’t talk about those issues, though. Not if he wanted to keep himself marginally levelheaded.

“You’re spacey today,” T.K. heard, and he felt himself jolt at the interruption. Paul was right next to him with that look on his face. The one that T.K. was being analyzed in ways that made him want to dig a hole and hide for a few months until things had steadied and he didn’t feel dizzy all the time. T.K. tried to keep his distance from Paul because it was hard to hide from someone who was hyper-observant. T.K. knew a thing or two about hiding. He’d hidden his sexuality, he’d hidden all the shit that happened with his father, and he’d hidden how untethered he always was, even before the accident. He took comfort in all the things he never showed anyone. Even Carlos only knew a sanitized version of what went on in T.K.’s head, and life was less chaotic that way. It kept things compartmentalized.

“I’m just here to do my job.” But he wasn’t even good at that anymore. All the calls that could have gone wrong did, but blocked those thoughts from his mind. He’d been on the verge of a mental breakdown for a while, and he tiptoed the edge between being okay and not being okay carefully. As long as he could act okay externally, he could deal with the messy internal thoughts. No one could know that he was struggling. If they did, they’d think it was too early for him to be back at work, and that wasn’t the case at all. Work wasn’t the problem. It was everything else in his life that was falling apart. Work was the glue that was keeping him together. But it’s getting harder to pretend I’m okay. I’m tired, too tired for the façade.

T.K. wasn’t sure why Paul had come to bother him at all. Maybe he’d drawn the short straw. The new team should’ve known better than to approach T.K. when he was in a mood. He’d made it clear that he wasn’t going to be social with anyone at the 126 other than Judd. T.K. wasn’t planning on making friends, and he certainly didn’t want any concern from people he saw as nothing more than interlopers.

“I’m here to talk if you need it, man.” The consideration almost made T.K. soften. Because I’m weak. Damn Paul for being a good guy. T.K. had to remind himself not to let his guard down just because someone was nice to him. Maybe several years ago, he would have been pathetic enough to try to be friends with anyone who paid attention to him, but he was past being desperate for love. Love always seemed to turn up tragic, anyway, so he’d clutch onto the love he already had without making any more. Whoever said the more, the merrier didn’t know the joy of being alone.

“I have a husband for talking to,” And I haven’t felt like talking to him either. Or my therapist.

Paul’s face remained neutral. “A husband, huh? I think that’s the first personal thing you’ve said. What’s his name?”

T.K. resisted rolling his eyes. He couldn’t help the clipped tone that came out, “Don’t get used to information. His name is Carlos. That’s all you’re going to get.” I’m such an asshole. He hated how he couldn’t seem to stop himself from being a jerk. He’d been an asshole to Carlos when they first met as well. He’d said, “Go look somewhere else if you’re looking to use your hero complex,” when Carlos had bandaged T.K. after T.K. fought with his dad. T.K. still wasn’t sure how Carlos had gotten past that moment, that broken and pathetic moment.

Paul shrugged, saying, “Okay. That’s fine. I’m not trying to push anything,” and the response made T.K.’s blood boil with something he couldn’t identify—anger, anxiety, maybe fear. He expected more of a reaction when he was an asshole, and it made butterflies flutter in his stomach when people’s reactions were different than he anticipated. No, it was more like bulls stampeding in his stomach, running with heaviness and power. “But that was a bad call with the little girl, so if you need to talk to someone who gets it, any of us are willing. It doesn’t have to be me.”

“That’s it? You’re not going to tell me off for being an asshole.” Childish defiance was brewing in T.K., and the more he wanted to make Paul’s expression change. “You obviously aren’t as observant as you claim to be because you haven’t noticed that I don’t plan to play nice with any of you. You’re only here because good men died. You’ve got awfully big shoes to fill, and you’re never going to fill them.”

Paul’s voice still didn’t raise. He pointed to his boots, “Luckily, I came with my own shoes, and I’ve filled them for a long time.” He stood from the bench and gave T.K. a pitiful look.  “I get that you lost a lot, and no one is going to replace your old crew, but like it or not, you’ve gained a motley crew of people who don’t want the world to hurt other people like it hurt us. You don’t have to talk to us. You don’t even have to like us, but we’re here, so you might as well make the best of us.”

The anger dissipated from T.K.’s body. “I think I just need a few moments alone.”

Paul gave a small smile, “Take as many or as few as you need,” and with a nod, he was gone.

For all he wanted it to, the day didn’t end there. T.K. just wanted to go home, bury himself under his covers, and sleep, but he had thirteen hours left on his shift, and he’d have to suck up his bad feelings and try to get through.

Just two hours later, Marjan was the second member of the crew to corner T.K. When he saw her come up to him with an expression that screamed, “We’re having a serious talk,” he pinched the bridge of his nose and suppressed a groan. He liked Marjan. She was a badass with a quick wit and a heart of gold. What wasn’t to like? But while she didn’t have Paul’s extreme observational skills, she had a way of cajoling information out of people that almost made talking to her more dangerous.

“We’re going out to a honkytonk tomorrow night. You should come.”

T.K. brushed her off, “I’m kind of busy.”

“You’re busy a lot.”

T.K. tried to make a joke, “I get booked up months in advance.”

“Well, maybe you could squeeze us in some time.”

“Yeah, maybe so,” T.K. said, but he wasn’t going to make any promises. The exchange was short, and for the most part painless.”

It wasn’t even one hour later when T.K. was bombarded yet again. He looked at Mateo with an exasperated expression, “What is this? A let’s talk to T.K. revolving door?”

Mateo looked confused, “What?”

“Never mind,” T.K. shook his head.

Mateo was the member of the 126 who people too often underestimated. They looked at him and assumed that he was stupid or naïve and wouldn’t know anything. He was quiet, and there was a lot that he didn’t understand, but his ignorance had nothing to do with his intelligence or will. He just didn’t have the experience level that the rest of the crew had, but he was good with the details. He left nothing to chance, and he was the least likely of all them to cut corners. He was thorough with his relationships too, and he was so naturally caring that it was hard to turn him away and not give him something. His trustworthiness and his genuine concern made it hard for T.K.’s barriers not to melt just a little bit, but I have to be strong.

Mateo was brief with his speech, “We’re all just here to help each other out, and we need each other now more than ever.”

“I need my old crew more than ever,” T.K. said, meaning to sound stubborn, but it came off as desperate and too honest.

“We’re more than replacements. We can be friends.”

“You’ll be waiting a while if you want friendship.”

Mateo shrugged. “I’m good at waiting. Do you know how long it took me just to be a probie?” T.K. hadn’t paid attention enough to know the answer, but he did remember a lot of fretting about Mateo’s firefighter’s test a while back. “I don’t care about having to do so much grunt work, either. I’m just glad to be here.” The question is, Am I glad to be here too?

T.K. felt a rush of relief fill him when Mateo didn’t make him say anything more, but T.K.’s mind wouldn’t leave him alone.

The final few hours of his shift dragged. They ate dinner together, but T.K. wasn’t hungry. He pushed his food around as he thought of the little girl, and couldn’t shake the sickness in his stomach. He wanted to escape. He wanted a drug. He wanted a hug from Carlos. He couldn’t take it anymore. His mind was reeling with the defeat of the day. Excusing himself, he snuck to the bathroom just to escape being near other people.

He splashed water on his face, trying to wash the bad of the day from his face, but it didn’t budge. He heard a voice and spun around, feeling his heart beat faster. It was just Owen. T.K. felt the fear diminish but the residual panic was still in his body.

“Sorry about that,” Owen said. Turning the tap on and waving his toothbrush. “I need a quick refresh.”

“It’s fine,” T.K. replied half-heartedly, not wanting to look as distraught as he felt while also not wanting to invite a conversation. T.K. dried his face off and tried to make himself presentable before he’d have to go back and face the rest of his shift.

Before he could slip away, Owen stopped him. “T.K., hold on,” Owen said as he spat the toothpaste into the sink and rinsed his mouth.

Owen Strand was the member of the 126 that T.K. knew better than he wanted to know him. He talked a lot, and he pretty quickly revealed heaps of information, but T.K. knew that for as open as he appeared to be, he had secrets that he was guarding. He was choosy about what he revealed, but because he revealed a significant amount of stuff that didn’t really matter, he seemed open. T.K. recognized that in him because T.K. was exactly the same way. He made people feel like he was giving information away to distract from the secrets he kept. Though, he hadn’t even been doing that lately. He didn’t have the energy to spin a narrative just to keep people off his trail. There was so much else he had to handle, and the new 126 didn’t seem worth the effort of either divulging information or actively hiding information.

Owen picked up a comb and started fixing his hair. Of course, Owen of all people would have a post-meal beauty routine. “It’s been a hard day. Self-care is most important on hard days.” He handed T.K. some lotion. “Try this. It has chamomile. It’s supposed to be soothing.”

“No thanks,” T.K. said.

“Suit yourself,” Owen said, putting the comb down and using the lotion for himself. “Our job certainly doesn’t promote good skincare.”

T.K. didn’t even know what to say to that. “I guess not. Can I go or did you want to say something?” “I wanted to check-in.”

For all he tried to be civil, T.K. couldn’t stifle his groan. “You don’t have to keep asking me how I am.”

“It’s not just you that I worry about. I check in with the others too. You’re just more elusive than them.”

“You can’t tell me I’m more elusive than Judd.”

Owen grinned. “Hard to believe, I know.”

T.K. eyed Owen as he picked up cologne and dabbed it on his wrists and onto his neck. “It’s the little things that get you through the day. I know it seems silly, but I like smelling like myself,” Owen explained. He was one of those people who liked to hear his own voice. “A good scent can remind you that there’s something beyond the smoke.”

T.K. knew the smell right away. “That’s Black Valley by Oscar Simmons, isn’t it?” Even assholes can have good taste in cologne.

Owen raised his eyebrows. “You know it?”

“My husband wears it.”

“He must be a dapper man.” Owen looked impressed. “It’s an old scent for someone so young to wear.”

“Carlos says it’s a classic. I think he likes it because his dad passed it down to him. He’s always thought his dad was super cool.”

A flash of something dark flickered through Owen’s eyes. “That’s nice. Tradition is important. I’ve been wearing this scent for nearly thirty years. It’s been through a lot with me.”

“It’s been around that long?”

“I still have trouble believing that I’ve been around that long,” Owen said with a chuckle.

“I’m getting pretty close to thirty-years myself.” He still had four years before then, but he was closer to thirty than twenty. He felt ancient. The past few months had felt like years.

“Enjoy the time before your body starts getting creaky.”

T.K. cracked his knuckles. “It’s already there.” He sighed. “But at least I get to grow older. That little girl—” he caught himself before he said more.

“It’s hard to see kids die,” Owen commented somberly. “How are you doing with that?”

T.K. forced a smile, the normal almost friendly moment dissipating as tenseness settled between them. “I’m doing okay.” Owen was the captain, so if there was anyone that T.K. had to fool, it was him.

“It’s been a long shift. A child died, and that’s always hard. No amount of experience makes that easier.”

“No, but I’m not cracking up over it.” He sighed. “It’s just hard.”

“I know, but you don’t have to shut down your emotions. I don’t want robots as employees, so I won’t penalize you for having them. It’s good to process those things.”

“We still have time on the clock, so I’ve got to keep my focus.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” Owen insisted.

“I didn’t say it was,” T.K. bit out. But it is, isn’t it?

“There was nothing you could have done.”

“Yeah, I know that,” T.K.’s voice was firmer now, but he couldn’t help the way it wavered at the end. “But I saved the villain.”

“You did your job.” Owen opened his mouth to say something else, but the alarm lit up, and a siren wailed through the firehouse.

“We’ll have to talk later,” T.K. told the captain, hurrying out of the captain’s office to get ready. He had no intention of talking. It’s best that way. Talking never leads to anything good coming out of my mouth.

It was nearly time to go home, and there was only one person who hadn’t yet had a heart to heart with T.K. As the only member of the crew to have a genuine relationship with T.K., Judd’s concern meant the most, but they’d never been the type of friends to have emotional conversations. They were brothers and would do anything for one another—Judd’s family often hosted T.K. for holidays, which they’d split with Carlos’ family—but they didn’t need heart to hearts to be close.

T.K. thought he was going to escape without a conversation with Judd until he saw Judd waiting by T.K.’s car.

“You have to let them in eventually,” Judd told him. T.K. had to admit that Judd was a changed person since he had started to go to therapy. Maybe that’s why he seemed so into having real conversations now instead of just talking about sports and married life.

“I don’t have to do anything,” T.K. insisted, and he sounded so much like a little brother.

“Kid,” Judd always called him kid when he was going into big brother mode, “They want to know you, and crews always work better when they trust one another.”

“I’ve given them no reason not to trust me. Just because I don’t share—”

“T.K., you’re not trusting them.”

“I trust them to do the job.”

“You won’t even tell them your favorite color.”

“I don’t have a favorite color.”

Judd sighed. “I’m not asking you to tell them every little detail about yourself, but if you want this to work, you have to give ‘em something.”

“Judd, I have to go.” T.K. looked at his watch, “Carlos is waiting for me, and I don’t want to be here longer than I have to.”

“Talk to him about what happened today. With everything with your dad—”

“He’s got nothing to do with this.”

“Are you sure about that? Carlos told me he was back in town.” Judd shook his head. “Which you should have told me.”

“I should have known Carlos wouldn’t keep that a secret.”

“He’s worried. I am too.”

“Please, Judd. I want to go home.”

“Fine.” Judd sighed. “Just don’t be a stranger. Dad misses you at family dinners.”

“I’m doing my best, Judd. You of all people know it’s a lot to deal with it all.”

“I know. I’m still strugglin’. trust me the nightmares keep on coming, but I’m taking little steps forward, and I’m learning not to let bad days get me down so much. Our new crew is a good bunch of people, so I don’t want your fears to get in the way of you adding some new people to your life.”

“I’m not afraid.”

Judd patted him on the shoulder, “Well, whatever you are ain’t making you happy,” and wasn’t that the truth. I’m not sure happiness is in the cards for me.

When T.K. finally got home, the last thing he wanted to do was talk more, so he slid into his house and went directly to bed without saying more than a few words to Carlos. He tried not to let thoughts about the dead little girl infiltrate his mind, but he had nightmares of her burning in the fire. When T.K. woke up, Carlos was already at work, and T.K. knew he’d have to endure the day alone. He didn’t mind moping on his own, but he knew it was a bad day to have excess time. If things were normal, he would have bothered one of the crew to hang out with him, but his crew was dead, and it wasn’t a good time to burden Judd. Grace would understand, but like Judd, she already had enough to deal with.

He could have always called Carlos, who would’ve dropped everything to talk to T.K., but Carlos had already missed enough work, and he deserved some time away from the chaos that T.K. had dragged him into.

With Carlos gone for most of the day, T.K. tried and let himself recover, by the third hour of watching a soap opera that he didn’t understand, T.K. was at the end of his rope.

When Carlos did come home, T.K. wasn’t in a talking mood, but silence didn’t pair well with dinner. He knew it would help, but he didn’t want another night of trauma talk. For once, he just wanted to pretend that they were a normal couple who worried about normal things like what they were having for dinner or whether to paint the living room tea leaf or sea glass. T.K. tried to find something to say, but he couldn’t think of anything normal, so he just stayed quiet and asked Carlos what he had done at work.

Carlos talked about his day, but after T.K. asked him about what he did during his day for the fourth time, Carlos had enough. “You have to talk about it eventually.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Something’s bothering you.”

“I’m just tired.”

“Conversations are always pulling teeth with you.”

“Could you stop? I’ve had a long day.” He wanted to eat their meal without the rattling in his brain. For a while, he wanted to ignore all that was wrong with his life.

“You were off today.” And agonized by all my free time.

“The days blur together, I guess,” which was true. With odd shift schedules, T.K. sometimes lost track of what day it was or when the old day had turned over to a new one.

“You haven’t been talking to me since you got back to work.”

“I talk to you every day, Carlos.” T.K. wouldn’t be able to stop talking to Carlos, even if he tried. He’d lose his mind after the third day of silence. For as closed off as he was, T.K. couldn’t stand silence with anyone for long, and he’d lose his head when he thought people were giving him the silent treatment. If no one was talking, T.K. usually babbled just to fill the space. He didn’t have to do that as much with Carlos, though, or anyone he trusted. T.K. knew that Carlos would never use the silence as a weapon.

“Not about how you’re doing.”

“There’s nothing to talk about. I’m fine. I’m back at work and feeling better than ever.”

“You don’t just go from wanting to kill yourself to being fine.”

“I wasn’t trying to kill myself. It was just a normal ‘I’m a fuck up who accidentally overdosed on a shit ton of oxy that didn’t even make me feel better.’” You’re a liar.

Carlos didn’t look convinced. “It doesn’t really matter what exactly happened that night. Whatever happened, you weren’t okay, and all that matters now is that it happened, and you need to address it. I want to know that you’ve been dealing with whatever you’re feeling in the right ways because going backward isn’t a choice.”

“I’m dealing as well as I can be.” He wasn’t telling the truth. He could have committed to his therapeutic process. He could have admitted that he had wanted to die when he took those pills. He could have told Carlos that despite all his bravado that he wasn’t sure if he was ready to be back at work and that he wasn’t even sure that firefighting was what he wanted anymore. He could have admitted that more than just work was getting to him. But he wasn’t going to do any of that because it was easier for everyone if he dealt with his shit alone.

“Keeping to yourself isn’t dealing. It’s ignoring the problem.”

“I’m trying to spare you the angst.”

“No, you’re trying to spare yourself from dealing with your problems.”

“Why does everyone want to talk? Why can’t any of you let things go back to normal? We pretended I was fine before. Can’t we do that again?”

“That’s kind of the problem. The normal you want to go back to doesn’t exist, and the sooner you realize that the more stable your life will become.”

“I’m not going to do anything crazy.”

“Maybe not, but you’ve been more on edge lately, and I’m not sure if it’s because you’re back at work or because I told you that your dad was back.”

“I don’t care about my dad,” T.K. refuted too quickly.

“Fine, then this is about something else.”

Carlos wasn’t going to drop this, and T.K. couldn’t help the anxiety that blossomed in his chest or the rage that it turned into. “Why are you always such a busy body? You can’t leave me to have peace for five goddamn seconds?” He regretted yelling immediately, but with all the shame he felt for yelling, he became angrier, and he needed to be louder, or else he’d be consumed by whatever happened next. He needed to keep fighting or he’d go down. “You’re supposed to support me, not try to leech information from me just to be entertained by the fucking drama in my life.” He sounded paranoid and insecure, but when he was in a mood, he always spoke to keep control of the situation and make sure his voice didn’t fade.

“I know what you’re doing.”

The anxiety was bubbling more, and he wasn’t sure what to do to stop it. He didn’t even know why it was there but yelling temporarily dulled it. “I’m yelling at you like an asshole, that’s what I’m doing, but you can’t drop your sincere, loving husband act for two seconds.”

“You want me to lash out, but I’m not going to take the bait.”

“That’s not what I’m doing. I’m just a fucking asshole, Carlos. It’s not that deep. You’re so naïve that you think there’s something redeemable in every person. How crazy is that? Grow up and see that some people are just wasted. They’re going to break your heart, and they’re not going to care that they’re doing it.”

“You always do this when you’re upset.”

“I’m not doing anything. It’s not a master plan or a scheme! I’m just an asshole. That’s all. You should know by now that that’s all I am. You married me, and if you don’t know what I am by now, that’s pretty pathetic. You must’ve been desperate if you married me. Aaron must have really broken you. He—”

T.K. could see the heat burning in Carlos’ eyes, and he got a guilty surge of satisfaction of finally getting a hint of the response he wanted. “Shut up, T.K, and don’t give me that crap. Aaron devastated me, but I was fifteen and in the closet. He’s in the past, but you’re not. You know what you do? You try to control people’s reactions. You provoke them so they’ll get angry with you because you’ve learned that a predictable bad response is more secure than gambling on what you might get.”

T.K. rolled his eyes, “Keep your social worker talk out of this.” He wasn’t looking to be psychoanalyzed.

Carlos swallowed a lump in his throat. “No, you’re all about bringing up hard truths tonight, so I’m not holding back either. You’ve learned that being hit hurts a lot less when you’ve convinced yourself that you had it coming, so when you feel vulnerable, you try to make people mad so that they get angry when you see it coming.”

“Stop it,” T.K. warned.

Carlos didn’t stop, “If you make people angry, you don’t have to risk them feeling something you don’t know how to handle. You don’t have to worry that they’ll hurt you for no reason because when you get too close to someone, you always give them a reason to be angry.”

T.K. felt his eyes get glossy, but he’d learned long ago that crying made things worse, so he closed his eyes and willed the drops to retreat into his eyes. He felt Carlos’ weight settle beside him and felt a warm hand slip into his. “I’m not trying to make you feel bad, but you don’t get to dictate when I feel what. I want you to feel safe, but you’re never going to feel safe if you don’t learn to accept that you aren’t responsible for how other people feel, and you can’t control their emotions.”

“I can’t even control my own emotions. I feel like they’re always going crazy.” He couldn’t get a grip on what he was feeling. It had always been hard for him to process his emotions or even identify which one he was feeling at any given moment.

“That would be hard.”

“It was just an awful day.”

“I don’t know what happened, but you’re trying to punish yourself. There’s a part of you that thinks it’s what you deserve.” Because punishment stops the spinning in my head.

“Yeah, well, I really fucked up, Carlos.” Maybe he did deserve bad things. All of the bad things. I messed things up so badly, and I don’t there’s a way to make it okay.

“What happened?” Carlos’ voice was gentle but prodding.

“There was a little girl who died in a fire we were called to.”

“Did something happen to her?”

T.K. nodded. “Someone happened to her.”

“Arson?”

“No. Her dad had beat her and her mom up, and then, he set the house on fire to cover it up.” The amount of senseless violence T.K. saw never ceased to make him sick.

“Fuck, that’s bad.”

“Yeah, and it was all my fault what happened to her.”

“No, T.K. her death wasn’t your fault. I’m sure you did everything you could to save her. I know you.”

“She was dead when we got there.”

“What do you feel guilty over, then? You couldn’t have stopped it.”

“I know that there was nothing I could have done. I didn’t even know what had happened at the time, but I saved the wrong person.”

“What do you mean?” Carlos’ brows were furrowed as he struggled to understand what was bothering T.K. so much. Carlos’ face became animated with grim understanding. “You saved her dad.”

T.K. swallowed a lump in his throat. “I had to leave her body there while I carried her abuser out.” Logically, T.K. knew that he was doing his job, and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he left a living person behind out of spite, but he hated how unfair it was when the scum of the Earth could continue living while people who did nothing wrong didn’t get that same chance. He hated that he had no control over it. He was powerless to the whims of the universe. He was powerless to his future. He was powerless to old scars that still sometimes ached as if they’d just happened. I’ve always been so powerless. “The thing I really hate,” he confessed, “is that I would have saved my dad even if he had tried to do the same to me.”

“That shows that you’re the better man.”

T.K. wanted to sob, but he let out a choked, “I’m sorry, Carlos,” instead.

“It’s okay.” It wasn’t. T.K. had been an awful husband, and he couldn’t stand himself for it.

“It’s not. I’m an asshole.”

“No, he’s the asshole..”

“It’s an inherited trait,” T.K. concluded, feeling like the worst person alive. Carlos is too nice to see the truth. He doesn’t realize that he can do so much better. “And I don’t think I’ll ever escape it.”
