Books I Bought This Past Month And A Bit
Yeah, I may have a problem. But life is stressful atm so let me have my process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of these I've already read but others I have ready for October, some I have for after when I wanna read something lighter since it's spring and summer will be here soon enough.
So happy I found myself a copy of Lucy Undying. Had no idea it was releasing in Australia similar time to the rest of the world. (Yes...unfortunately that is still common here. Looking at you 'The Thirteenth Child', March next year my arse. My Scottish friend has my back there.)
I'm also really excited to read 'The Death of Dora Black', the story is inspired by the first female Australian police officer and I'm all for women being included. (This also hits home a bit cause my grandma was also one of the first female police officers, only in Scotland rather than Australia. My grandad was also a detective at Scotland Yard. It's how they met, really cute story like jskdhfgabklusyjdgfb.)
I finally caved and bought 'Once Upon a Broken Heart', I much preferred the American cover. The bright pink of the Australian cover was just too much (even though I adore pink), but this blue did look nice too.
I'm doing a buddy read with a friend and we have chosen 'The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires'. I'm so pumped cause I don't often get to buddy read.
'The Book of Eve' is written in a really interesting but odd way. I've read the first few chapters but this one is going to take me a while to read for sure.
'Her Soul to Take' has been a really frustrating one to get a hold of. Amazon sent me the wrong version TWICE. I purchased the bonus chapter version. But they said I could keep it and gave me refund so HELL YEAH!!
And ofc I have the new covers of Haunting and Hunting Adeline. I love that series so much. Now just to get an original copy of Hunting Adeline so I can annotate it and add it to my collection. Amazon unfortunately screwed up again which is why I currently do not have the original cover. These books are honestly so hard to get here. It's driving me insane. Even second hand copies of this book goes for $40-$50 AUD. I'm legit crying. If anyone has a copy they don't want that's in good condition PLEASE hit me up.
I bought a GORGEOUS version of 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue', I've never bought a book like this and when I saw it I just could not help myself. The pretty sprayed edges and the art on the inside I just couldn't say no!
Of course if you've seen my other posts recently you'd know I have been OBSESSED with Erin A. Craig. And I'm currently reading through 'Small Favours' at the moment. Only a few chapters in but it's tickling my brain in a good way so far.
And 'Grimstone'!!! I'm so excited to finally have a copy. I had it preordered since July. So excited to get to it once I've finished all the main books I wanna read first.
If you got this far, honestly, thank you. I know this post is just an excited ramble but it's just fun to ramble about things you like. Leave a bee emoji if you read it all.
Have a good day!

A Breath of Snow and Christmas
Summary:
It is Christmas Eve, and Dr. Claire Beauchamp's third week on the pediatric rotation at Boston Children's Hospital.
One of her patients is a very special four-year-old named Claudel.
And his favorite nurse, Jamie, is intent upon making Christmas magical for the little lad.
A three part modern AU Outlander Christmas series.
Tumblr media
“And last but certainly not least,” said Dr. Hildegarde over the flutter of shuffling notes, “we have our friend Claudel—”
A high-pitched squeal of laughter cut her off, and a dozen pairs of smiling eyes glanced up to watch the friend in question whirl like a tornado around a large redheaded man.
“Who is that? Who goes there?!”
The little boy let out another shriek of delight as the man’s booming voice added, with exaggerated indignation, “Heyyy, where did my— who stole my phone?! I ken I had it in my pocket jes’ a second ago!”
With a fond shake of her head, our attending looked back down at her clipboard. “Four-year-old male, admitted with cystic fibrosis exacerbation. Go ahead, Dr. Beauchamp.”
Lips still twitching with amusement, I cleared my throat. “Right, Claudel LaRue, direct admit from home for pseudomonas flare. Got his PICC line on the 16th, we are on day”—a pause to check my notes—“eight of zosyn and tobramycin, and as you can see, he appears to be feeling much better.” A collective chuckle rose from our team as the child bounded onto his hospital bed and began an enthusiastic victory dance, waving the stolen phone over his head.
“G-tube feeds going well?” my attending prompted. “How are we doing on hydration?
“Better,” I confirmed. “He actually surpassed his fluid goal yesterday, and his weight is up by half a kilo since admission.”
Dr. Hildegarde nodded, making a few notes on her paper. “Any word from foster mom?”
My face fell. “The nurses say she calls every few days to check in, but they haven’t heard from her since Monday.”
A humming, noncommittal noise, another mark on her paper. “Par for the course with this one. Be sure she knows he’s being discharged on the 30th. Last time, she forgot to come pick him up.” With a sigh, she clipped her pen to the top of the chart and tucked the file beneath her arm. “No changes to his orders, then?”
“No, nothing for today.”
“Very good. That’s it for the morning, then, everyone. Have a safe holiday, and stay warm out there. Call if you need me, Claire.”
I gave a small salute, exchanging goodbyes and Merry-Christmases with the other members of my team as they dispersed posthaste, eager to get home to their families. As the last of the clacking heels and Oxfords disappeared around the corner, little Claudel let out another squeal, smoothing over the needleprick of jealousy in my heart.
Drawn to the sounds of joy, I sauntered to the open door and leaned against its frame, watching with tender amusement as the Scotsman spun in circles, making a show of trying to find the thief who had stolen his phone. I’d only been on the pediatrics rotation for three weeks, but I recognized him as one of the nurses on the unit; at well over six feet tall, with a mop of russet curls and an unmistakable brogue, he was difficult to miss. His name started with a J, I thought — Jeremy? Jason?...
“Ah, Dr. Beauchamp!” he exclaimed as I rapped my knuckles on the doorjamb. “Thank goodness ye’re here.”
At once mildly (pleasantly) surprised that he knew my name and a bit ashamed that I couldn’t reciprocate, I tried to cover the deficit with a chuckle. “Having a bit of trouble in here?”
“He can’t see me!” Claudel crowed, blue eyes sparkling. “I’m inbisible!”
Catching on to the game, I gasped, jumping back. “Who said that?!”
The little boy howled with delight, flinging himself onto the bed and kicking his legs up in the air. I exchanged warm glances with the Scotsman — Christ, what was his name? — who blinked both eyes at me in a quick, owl-like movement that I only realized belatedly was meant to be a wink.
“He looks so much better,” I remarked, leaning in toward him to speak sotto vocce.
“Aye,” the man agreed just as softly, both of our eyes locked on the boy. “Really turned a corner in the last couple’ve days.”
“Did he get his breathing treatment already this morning?”
“No’ sure.” At my inquisitive look, he smiled a bit bashfully. “I’m, ah… I’m not actually his nurse today. Just here as a friend.” Keep reading...

@maimedaffair : 🎲 for a crowded nightclub on new years eve, the countdown to midnight is just about to start. luc ➵ addie larue.
Tumblr media
in a minute, the year will be over. another waits around the corner ––all around her, the beat of humanity keeps on pulsing. addie rides it like a wave, breathing in the joy and melancholy alike, tasting alcohol and glitter and perfume in the air. and anticipation. that too, of course.
in this moment, addie larue is as memorable as everyone around her, just another girl lost in the press of dancing, writhing bodies. she lets her eyes close as the crowd begins to call out the numbers. ten! nine! arms wrap around her, familiar. a cool darkness embracing her. ❝ right on time. ❞ addie doesn't need to shout for him to hear her. eight! seven! the body behind her is confident, the voice at her ear as alluring as it is repellent. ❝ you chose the wrong night to come around. ❞ she turns, twisting in his arms with a challenging look. ❝ you want me to leave this behind? ❞ six! ❝ or... are you here for something else? ❞ five! four! her gaze falls where it shouldn't. lingering on luc's lips before tearing up back to his eyes. three! close now. decide. two! ❝ well? ❞ –––one!

twenty questions for fic writers
tagged by @mightymizora (thank youuu)
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 94.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 1,108,787, ahahaha. I’ve been at it for like 20 years though. 3. What fandoms do you write for? Baldur’sGate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Lucifer make up the bulk of my fics but I’ve dabbled in some more fandoms.  4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
There are names for what binds us - (DAI; Blackwall/Trevelyan) The free parking jackpot rule - (Lucifer; Lucifer/Chloe) Blaze Me a Sun - (BG3; Astarion/Tav) And Hate the Idle Pleasures of These Days - (Lucifer; Michael/Ella) Kiss by Kiss I Cover Your Small Infinity - (Lucifer; Lucifer/Chloe)
5. Do you respond to comments? I always try to!
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? All of my A Song of Ice and Fire fics are angsty since they’re about women who die in various horrible ways. But I’m generally more of a bittersweet writer, I think. 7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Like I said, I lean towards the bittersweet and most endings are more sweet than bitter.Compared to canon outcomes I’d say my Michael fics for the Lucifer fandom are the happiest ones because you can’t give me a wretched, bitter, jealous mirror to Most Loved Boi Lucifer and not expect me to root for him in some way. 8. Do you get hate on fics? Not since my Jamie/Brienne drabbles ended up on a rabid Jamie/Cersei reclist. I also had some snippy comments/PMs on a Michael fic where I closed down Hell because Lucifer the show gave me an American Dream ending with self-improvement through therapy in Hell instead of questioning revenge as a moral solution. 9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Gods, I used to. Not so much now, no. It’s just not that interesting to me anymore, I rather write around the smut. The kind of smut I like to write is emotionally intense and/or angsty, at any rate.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Very, very rarely. I’m uninterested in reading them myself but I’ve used crossover as a concept in two stories: Troy Lies in Ruins (Cyberpunk 2077) in which Johnny is the Clementine inside V’s head and I use Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as inspiration for their post-game quest to find each other again.
The Gods That Answer After Dark (Lucifer) in which I crossover Deckerstar with the novel The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and had a chance to shut down that damned hell again.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yes, someone more or less paraphrased my Johnny/V fic And your heart, as it was then, will be on fire by posting their own fic with pretty much entire paragraphs stolen from mine. I didn’t do anything about it, though, it had no comments/kudos at the time.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, it was flattering.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I don’t think so, not that I can recall. I’d be up for it, though, it would be kind of cool to co-write a romance story where two authors write two different characters.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? I don’t think I can pick just one.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I always intend to finish the WIPs. That said, it would require a lot of willpower to return to the oldest WIPs I have, by now. 16. What are your writing strengths? I think I’m good at concepts, characters and hopefully keeping a distinct sort of style. I used to be more pretentious. I think my writing has become better by dropping some of the most literary concepts in favour of focusing on emotions and social dynamics.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plot? I think I could write plot - I like to plan stories out - but I don’t really want to dedicate time to write it. I’m also really bored by action and exposition. Ugh at having to explain and describe shit beyond a tightly packed sentence or two.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I don’t even understand this question and will blame it on English being my second language.
19. First fandom you wrote for? The Legend of the Ice People, oh my lord. If only for my desk drawer. https://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-of-the-Ice-People-19-book-series/dp/B075TY2F5M The US version of the covers have removed ALL suggestive and thrillingly forbidden vibe from the original though. What 13 year old me loved about them was that the first book was about a horny 16 year old girl who falls in love with a 40 something demonic and cursed (also solitary and very angsty) dude after having intense sex dreams about him as Satan. Every book after that just added to the cocktail of sex, history and ancient curses and for years so much of what I wrote was fanfic versions of this series.  20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written? I’m rather fond of this Aeducan/Gorim story: so I wait for you like a lonely house
I'm tagging @wanderingaldecaldo, @thievinghippo, @icescrabblerjerky and @threewhiskeylunch if you're up for it. Otherwise feel free to ignore.

Book review - The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab (second picture is stolen from google because my copy of the book didn't have the jacket cover).
I haven't read a fantasy book in forever so I wasn't sure if I would like this one, but I wound up loving it. The author doesn't write in prose per se, but has a really masterful use of syntax and repetition. Thematically, the book is kind of like a combination of The Age of Adeline and Faust. The main character, Addie LaRue, is born in the late 1600s in small village in France called Villon-sur-Sarthe. Her father is a woodworker, and her favorite memories growing up are of traveling to the nearest city with him when he sells his wares at the market. Her world is very small, and going to the city is her only opportunity to experience life more fully. However, when she reaches puberty her mother decides that it is no longer appropriate for her to make the trips there. Addie feels her world growing smaller by the year, when it should have been expanding. She puts of marriage for a time, but when she is 23 another opportunity presents itself, and her parents will not let her turn it away.
There is an old unmarried woman in the village named Estelle who worships the old gods instead of the new. While many pity her, she is a role model to Addie because she has lived her life according to her own will. Since praying in church has not led to any results for her, Addie starts leaving offerings to the old gods, praying to be free and not die in the village without seeing more of the world. On the eve of her wedding, she runs into the woods to try one last time to ask the gods for help in escaping her marriage. She does not notice as dusk slips into night, and Luc, the the God of Dark, answers her.
She makes a deal with him, promising her soul in return for freedom and more time. He agrees, and she becomes immortal. The catch is that “true freedom” in this case means not being remembered by anyone, and not being able to leave a mark. People forget Addie the moment she leaves their sight, and she cannot say her own name, write, hold on to things, or leave permanent marks on them. Addie does not know about this part when she makes the deal.
As she explores her new life, Addie enjoys the beauty of all the things she sees while traveling, but also suffers immensely. Since she cannot hold a job, she is forced to steal. She also has no permanent home, and is often unbearably lonely. The only one who knows her is Luc, who visits her on the anniversaries of their deal and urges her to surrender her soul. She never does and is angry at him, yet relies on him as the one constant in her life.
Life goes on for Addie for 300 years. She has lived in many cities, learns many languages, and comes to know plenty of people, but they never get to truly know her. She is also unable to leave a trace of herself, expect abstractly by influencing the ideas of artists and other people. That is, until one day in New York City in 2014, when she meets a bookshop keeper named Henry who remembers her for stealing a book. She does not know why he is able to remember her. She invites him out for dinner, and they begin to know each other. Obviously Addie does not want to let him go, but it seems inevitable due to the curse that their relationship cannot last.

okay yall i never post ANYTHING here but i have so many thoughts bc i just finished reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and oh my GOD
okay okay first off, loved this book, i have never, EVER related to a character more and i see so much of myself in henry!! he's sweet and selfless, but at the cost of his own happiness, he tries to be good and steady, but ends up falling apart. like UGH. (i hope that makes sense)
and oh my god addie, so resilient but so real, she's tired of playing this game, but needs to go on for her own sake, so none of it was for nothing
luc is also such an interesting character as well, like i truly believe this is some kind of obsession/possession situation, but a part of me is like "....maybe" like he's so deceiving but even during their fight in new orleans, i felt as though his feelings were true and he was just playing a part to rile addie up GOD
and when i was thinking about the book earlier today, still fresh in my mind, it truly hit me that this book is about TIME, like not just addie living through time, and henry having none (until the end), but even with addie and henry. addie says in the last chapter that she "doesn't know if it was love" with henry but earlier she had said "the boy she is falling in love with." she didn't have TIME to truly fall in love with henry the way henry fell for her, like that's probably so SIMPLE but it hit me like a TRAIN
cause then on the opposite end, luc and addie had nothing BUT time, no matter how long they spent apart, they were each other's constant and i think addie does love luc in a way even if she says at the end she will break free of him!!! (again probably super obvious but my brain will not SHUT UP)
and the whole reason this came about as well is bc i was listening to a few of Bastille's new songs, particularly "Eve & Paradise Lost" and "Seasons & Narcissus"
both beautiful songs but i could NOT get out of my head that "Eve & Paradise Lost" is he ty speaking to addie while "Seasons & Narcissus" is addie speaking about/to luc, pls listen if u have the chance ☝🏻🙂‍↕️
UGH my brain is full, my heart is aching, this book is so special and i'm only 4 years late LMFAO

Can you please recommend some of your favourite romance novels that are well-written and have more complex plots? Thank you! ❤️
Of course! I'm giving you recommendations as if you've never heard of any of these in your life so forgive the basic Jane Austen mentions, I simply believe it's always necessary to recommend Jane Austen. Also, some of these are straight up romance and some of them just have well-written romance subplots that take a backseat to the overall story. Some of these are adult, some of these are YA, some of these are classics, some of these are contemporary, some of these are fantasy—hell, some of these are less a romance in the sense that there's a wonderful relationship and there's a happily ever after and more a deconstruction of human relationships and the complex romantic feelings that come from that. Pick which ones stick out most to you and research what most fits the vibe you want to read!
my personal recommendations.
persuasion by jane austen. (all of jane austen's books as well, but this is my favorite novel of all time)
atonement by ian mcewan.

18: favorite tv show?
Oof, I have lots of favorite tv shows. But I really love The Witcher, The Walking Dead, Black Mirror, Stranger Things, Supergirl, Killing Eve, The Boys and much more. I can't pick just one, sorry bestie.
36: favorite movie?
Here we go again! The Noose (1958), The Batman, Control (2007), The Father, The Others, Gone Girl, The Hours etc. Forgive me, but I'm always too indecisive when it comes to choosing just one thing among my favorites, lmao
37: do you read a lot? whats your favorite book?
I haven't been reading much lately tbh. Most of the books I've been reading lately are either psychology books or some DC comics if I'm in the mood for them. But some of my favorite books are Daisy Jones and the six, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Loveless, Addie Larue, Act Cool and Rebecca.

About Crafting Disorder (The Ponderosa Pines Series – Book 2): Bigfoot is loose in Ponderosa Pines What with thwarting a blackmailer intent on sabotaging their beloved community, and navigating their increasingly complicated romantic lives, Chloe LaRue and EV Torrence already have their hands full. But mischief is afoot. Or, maybe mischief is a Bigfoot. With items mysteriously disappearing in the night, the sleepy town no longer seems the safe haven it once was. And things only get worse when one of the residents posts a photo of a shadowy figure on the Internet, and the story goes viral. Now, the two best friends must figure out what’s lurking in the woods, and hatch a plan to save their town from a merry band of Sasquatch hunters intent on creating chaos in the weird and wonderful town of Ponderosa Pines.
