Uncharted Waters: Push and Pull

Now that meeting with Chieftess Mbarka was over, he was eager to show his young guests around the camp. Because they weren’t planning to stay long there were none of the artisan stalls, or tents full of trade goods that would have been built for a long term stay, but there were plenty of interesting places to see. Gwafa gave them the run down on where to get food, where to get washed up, and which tents had the most hospitable inhabitants. There was  even a tent where the camp’s pack animals were house, where Gwafa had them bring Matcha for a nice rest.  Katara and Zuko were quiet for the tour, but if Gwafa noticed, he didn’t say anything. Zuko would occasionally say something to fill an expectant pause in Gwafa’s commentary, but Katara said almost nothing the entire time. Finally, Gwafa spotted someone he knew and left his charges for a few minutes, and Zuko leapt at the opportunity to speak to Katara alone.

“What’s the matter with you?” Katara bristled at the question, despite Zuko seeming genuinely concerned.

“Nothing,” she snapped. Zuko balked at that. The look on his face was equal parts affront and alarm.

“That doesn’t sound like nothing,” he said. “What’s going on?” Katara crossed her arms and glowered at the rocky sand beneath her feet. She thought about not answering. She knew Zuko probably wouldn’t press if she didn’t. At least not with Gwafa just a few yards away.

“Are you really so anxious to get away from me?” she asked him quietly. Zuko’s brow drew down in confusion.

“What are you talking about?” he asked. “I already told you, I’m coming with you. I’m going to teach…” Zuko stopped and looked around nervously, before dropping his voice, unnecessarily. “I’m going to teach your friend, remember?”

“That’s not what I meant,” Katara said.

“Then what do you mean?”

Katara was getting angry again. It was all the worse because she couldn’t explain why, which only made her more irritable. She gestured towards Mbarka’s tent.

“What was that back there?” she demanded. “You don’t want to share a tent with me all the sudden?”

Chapter 138:

Benares has a snake arm and a familiar face wakes up in her bedroom, screaming from a nightmare...

Remember Youko? The snake devil who took over Pai's form in that whole convoluted plot volumes ago? Well, she's a person of interest for Yakumo and Pai and Benares who are all tailing her. Though it's been a week and Benares hasn't made a move so they're starting to think he's not interested in her at all. They get crowded onto a train as they're considering that they don't need to follow her after all, especially since they don't want to drag her back into their messed-up lives. But when she disappears, they panic and Yakumo falls onto the train tracks when a train's coming. Youko sees this and saves his life in a blink of an eye.

After making sure he's fine, she asks if they've met before. He says no but she says she feels a warmth being with him. When the cops come over, she escapes by jumping over a fence, saying she'll see him back there on Sunday. Yakumo flees too.

Youko's at school where she practices for her kendo club, her friends worried about her since that's all she does recently. She says she has to because when she's not training, she's uneasy and anxious. She doesn't know why...but Yakumo and Pai, watching from outside, think something's happening to her...

In the showers, Youko ends the chapter by discovering snake scales on her arm. Just like Benares...

Sometimes you watch a show and you're like: wow, they had a serious show bible for this. And you just know it's treated like the holy grail it is by everyone involved, that it's laminated, that it's got annotations, footnotes, color coordination, a section for foreshadowing, callbacks, foils and parallels, that an eye blink doesn't get blunk without it matching that character's arc for the season and the show overall.

And sometimes you watch a show and you know that show had a pamphlet, one with, say, the word TEEN written on the front, WOLF on the back and just [TBD] splatted inside, probably with (abs?) scrawled on the bottom somewhere. And someone put their gum in it around the start of the fourth season.
