I just saw another one of those "teenager thinks that people give up all hobbies and interests as soon as they turn 30" posts and idk like yeah the sentiment is sad but what's also sad is like. You gotta wonder if that teenager's parents didn't have any hobbies and that's where they got that idea from. I grew up regularly going with the whole fam to my parents' best friends' house, where the grownups played DND and rail baron while the kids played in the yard. My mom was a voracious reader who also obsessively played Spyro the dragon on PlayStation. My dad was a goddamn civil war reenactor (please before you come for me he had both uniforms). He still is regularly booked to lead educational tours of battlefields, which he loves. I knew my mom's favorite actor was Robert Redford. She took me, age 11, to see the fellowship of the ring in theaters because she loved the books so much and she knew I would too - and she was right, bc the second we got home I pulled the books off the shelf and immediately read them. My parents played games - often with us! - and had interests and hobbies outside of us, but they also shared those things with us, and that was such a positive experience for me. I have never bought into the idea that there's an age limit on fun, bc that was not the example I had. When I see posts like that I feel bad for the kids and their parents both, bc it doesn't have to be like that. And I hope as the kids making those posts grow they learn that lesson for themselves. We don't have to grow out of fun, and we can make more of it as we age.

Can I just go on a rant about how much I hate them forcing naruhina down our throats? Like idk if you know about it, but there's a really popular naruto game for playstation called "naruto ultimate ninja storm", and there's 4 of them. The first one covers all of the events of part 1, the second one everything in shippuden up to the pain arc, the third one everything after that right before the war, and the fourth one is the whole war and the final fight. After the fourth one's events, they made some side quests in the adventure mode which briefly shows some of the characters lives after the war, but no one's story is as forced as hinata's. Not only can you not skip it like you can skip the others, but there's literally MULTIPLE small quests that have to do with her and ppl tryna pathetically force her and naruto together 😭 even SAI (??) to make things worse, sasuke, an objectively really important character both in the story and in naruto the MCs life, is nowhere to be seen. Ik he's traveling at this point but they could've easily shown him writing letters to naruto or maybe have naruto go on an adventure to meet him somewhere, but nope. Instead they have sakura playing matchmaker and telling naruto to take hinata around the world to different important places in naruto's life to show her his adventures (including the final valley!! that really pissed me off 😡) and the whole time naruto's just confused why he has to do alla that 😭 like that cringey quest not even working makes the whole thing even more annoying and pointless. It felt like they were kinda incorporating the last movie's storyline into the game. And the one with sai has him literally call hinata an angel and every other konoha girl the devil bc they dared to call out naruto's flaws, but good little missy hinata bug eyes princess hyuga kept finding good in every one of his bad flaws so she must be a sweet little angel 😭 she worships him like he's a God and they call it being in love. I mean naruto and sasuke are in love with each other and neither worships the other so 🥴 the quest was basically the konoha girls getting together to tell hinata about naruto's flaws so she can know him better if she wants to pursue a relationship with him. like the whole thing is so fucking cringey and weird idek where to begin with it. You can skip sq’s except for Hinata’s 🥲? Well, I’ve never seen ‘the Last’, but that’s exactly what they do in that movie, right? The entire plot is to force a version of a dumbed down Naruto that suddenly lacks all development and emotional intelligence for the sake of miss princess to then “screw” (Boruto; bolt) them together through Naruto's utter confusion and canon retcon because he'd never otherwise, lmao it’s so pathetic. He is canonically just as important as Naruto to tell the story (harmony), but do you really think that if they've actually shown Naruto meeting up with Sasuke during the blank period that it's then possible in any way to make the sequel happen the way it is now and force every traumatized-from-war-etc-19yo to marry and have babies as quickly as possible? Yep, but yeah I personally am happy that Sasuke is not made to be a part of that including the parts in Naruto's life that should've been a happy memory when they all end up in a disaster. That would've been contradictory would he have been by his side. I know many people have disagreed with me in the past but I stand by what I said; seeing them both miserable makes sense. It's also not what I wanted, but at least those parts are IC given we're already at this point. I don't want to bore you with a lot of marketing talk, but this is all part of its strategy. Kishimoto is the author and creator of the original Manga, but he isn't a businessman. Nor are the people in business necessarily storytellers. Professional storytellers (except for Jun Esaka, 'author' of retsuden, who's probably someone's niece or something) are hired to accomplish a goal. Everything beyond the original story goes through an entire web of business-related processes which by itself has nothing to with Kishimoto or the story but is often designed to expand a franchise and doing anything possible to make members of the audience into consumers and active participants to broaden the experience. Hence why games and such are media channels used for 'exclusive' content. These are considered a part of what we call content-mapping and they usually separate goals or subjects that need extra attention... Also, bet most of you didn't know that 'the Last' came with over 30 different types of exclusive merch and even 2 separate books to boost Hinata :') It's insane really. The main character isn't the main priority because it depends on the strategy.. which is kinda really screwed when you think about it because I do wonder how it would've played out if Naruto and Sasuke were 🥹 So yeah, it all makes sense, but it's not fun. for context, I did have a lot of consoles throughout my life bc as I've said video games pretty much are my life but they were:

Mega Drive 3 or whatever its called yknow one of those TecToy things that comes with games already in it - older cousin didn't want it anymore

Polystation (famiclone) - 1980's console sold in the 2000's yeah this was probably like 10 dollars. we gave it away eventually. my parents barely remember that we had this but if there's something I don't forget it's video games

PlayStation 2 Slim - cheapest version of the PS2 you could get at the time when the PS3 was already out. I think my parents divided the cost with someone else in the family. we pirated all our games.

black Nintendo DSi - my mom asked a friend of hers who was visiting the US to get it there cheaper and she'd pay it back. I was disappointed to find that every other kid on the planet had a DSi XL instead which deeply insulted me because 90% of them stopped playing with the thing as soon as it wasn't cool anymore and my hands grew to be larger than average so I kind of needed that. I pirated all my games.

normal white Nintendo Wii - I don't remember how many years after the console's release this was but it was a standard Wii. my uncle who doesn't live here happened to have bought this in fucking Syngapore and gave it to us. yes that means it used PAL games. in a region that only sold NTSC games. we pirated all our games except for the Wii Sports and Wii Play discs that came with the console and the second controller respectively

normal 8GB storage release year Wii U (as opposed to the 32GB black one that actually came with a game already) - my parents divided the cost with another family member and bought it for me on the christmas of the year that thing released because I really really really begged them so I could play Smash 4. I didn't know how to mod a Wii U, so this was my first console with original games. I had to wait a month or two after I got it to actually have something to play though, since they couldn't afford it. I don't regret wanting a Wii U, all things considered

release year Nintendo Switch with the red and blue joycons - I got this used from a colleague in late 2022 (nearly 6 years after it came out) because of how expensive this shit is. the joycons were brand new due to stick drift replacements. I got a few games since then and found out that I actually don't like this thing at all it feels so bad to play in any form possible and every game is like 300 bucks

besides that I would play stuff on old used laptops or whatever we could get emulators running on. always keep gaming and buy a ps vita for me if you can

He’s kinda like a dad to the gaming pastas. Like, none of them had great childhoods (hence how they latched onto the games so hard as a coping mechanism) and Herobrine is like, Tim and Brian’s age. (The reason I consider Herobrine to be the dad is bc he’s the og Game pasta if you ask me bc if his iconic he is and how long he’s been around compared to the others.)

he once pulled someone from irl into Minecraft, locked them in a Bedrock box with no doors and made it so they couldn’t die of hunger. Why, you may ask? Lost got a girlfriend. Herobrine was happy for him at first, until Lost came to Herobrine saying that the girl had pressured him into doing you-know-what in the bedroom despite knowing he’s asexual. The girl is still there to this day, slowly going insane with no way of knowing how long she’s been there of if/when she’ll get out with but the sweet release of death to look forward to… but Herobrine made sure she won’t even get that luxury.

I personally like when Curt is one of Peter's profs in college, which I was kinda expecting in the Insomniac game. It was mentioned in the first game that Peter was a teacher assistant at the ESU and I thought it was for Curt's classes. I think it would've added more emotional weight in Peter's quest to cure Curt in the second game, and would make players more invested if they've had some history together besides the Lizard thing. They didn't need to be super close, but Curt could've been someone that Peter respected and was familiar with.

I'm very happy overall with what we did get in the Insomniac sequel game with Curt and he's definitely one of my favourite versions, but I was also disappointed when his intro scene at the EMF seemed to confirm that he and Peter don't have a relationship between their civilian identities, regardless of whether Curt knows he's Spider-Man or not; like you, I also thought that given Peter having been a TA, the official blurb for the Lizard on the PlayStation site saying they had first met in college (which could be interpreted in a few different ways), and how Peter obviously really cares about him in the gameplay preview that we were going to get them being close outside of Spider-Man things and that Curt was one of his ESU professors, but I guess not; it's also weird bc there was a post-release interview where they talked about how what makes the Spider-Man villains great is their personal relationships with Peter, and they specifically cited how Connors has that element of oh, he's not just a monster to beat up, but also Peter's professor whom he really likes and doesn't want to hurt, though I guess they were speaking more generally there.

At the very least, I think it would have been helpful to have a character bio provide more background information bc we really don't know much about their history and relationship, and every cut scene they had was focused on advancing the plot rather than developing their relationship - which is fine, but I do think it's part of a broader issue with the game feeling rushed and underdeveloped at times, especially in the third act, and I would have loved if they had some more personal scenes together outside of the Lizard campaign.

Something else that felt a little muddled was how there were moments where I wasn't sure if Peter actually cared about Curt for Curt's sake bc Peter does see him as a friend (beyond Peter being a hero who helps everyone) or if he only cared about him as a means to an end to help Harry, if that makes sense? Like in the church scene when he says, 'I'm just here to save my friend', it makes the most direct sense for him to mean Curt, but then I was like, wait, does Peter even see him as a friend in this universe, and if not, does he mean he's just here for his actual friend Harry and the serum only matters in the sense of bringing Curt back to help him? Especially considering how after the failed zoo rescue, the trio doesn't seem too concerned about Curt being stuck as the Lizard until they realize they need him to help Harry, which is weird writing, now that I think about it.

Anyway, I wonder how much of the seeming lack of closeness may be due to the fact that they didn't want to repeat a mentor relationship like the one the first game had between Peter and Otto, with the irony being that the Peter and Otto relationship in the Insomniac games is just like the Peter and Curt one in the 616 comics and some adaptations, namely the 90s animated series; I think it's completely possible for Peter to have two mentors in different areas though, instead of only one or the other - but I also wonder how much was also bc they had him be an Oscorp scientist involved with the symbiote, possibly with a previous day job as a medical doctor until the Lizard thing, and couldn't have him be a professor as well; I'd love to know at what point they decided to have him tied to that plot bc the symbiote was obviously there all along, and it's common in adaptations for Connors to be the symbiote expert, but I can't tell if he was linked to it from the start or if they had other possible ideas for him until deciding on that one.

Ok first of all. I dont like parappas songs in this game, and all of these use those instrumentals. Its nothing in particular I thought I would like at least one but strangely not? but parappas VA is incredibly talented idc if thats like common knowledge gotta say it when you think it yk. ok now

first song: All We Need Is Music:

i posted the "WITH THE FUCK WITH THE FUCK WHAT THE FUUUUUCK" thing like a second ago and thats like my whole opinion on that song. im pretty sure katy is singing some of it and like i love her her voice actor was incredibly talented again gotta say the obvious. also the beginning where shes like "oh. (chuckles) ok." with like no context is so real so great. also what the fuck is happening in the video.

second song: The New Plan

the lyrics are just "im cool man and so is milk can and heres a bunch of stuff we did" Im very neutral about this one i have no thoughts other than yes you are cool and so is milk can

third song: Life Is Like A Sky

the song is basically just "remember guys behave yourselves!!!" but hearing parappa say "Stay away from drugs" is so funny again not many thoughts

fourth song: Why

THIS ONE IS SO SILLY TO ME bc he starts off with shit like "why. do birds have wings" like ok ok then "why. do boys like girls? girls like boys, boys like toys, and girls like curls?" interesting thoughts parappa "why do we feel hungry? why do we need money?" even further into interesting "Who created sunny funny?" her dad what "Why is fire hot? why does rain fall in drops?" yeah? "why do we have first and last names?" ok ok "And how come people die? And where do we go, from the sky?" damn ok parappa questioning the real shit at late hours in the morning. anyway yeah hes just slowly questioning everything in this song and it sounds really funny to me

last and sixth song: No Cuttin Corners

BAHAHA THE WHOLE SONG IS JUST "listen to your parents guys! go to school! dont do drugs! I hate the dealers at my school! i dont need cigarettes! playstation! Dont drink alcohol! Dont shoot each other! I go to school! my dad is yelling at me even though I did my chores! I have 4 paws but i walk on 2! Talk it out!

OKOKOK TO BE FAIR "We Are Milkcan!" is never going to be beat in terms of all over the place in tone and I love that song so Im sure that this one has its fans. I just think its really funny that parappa sounds like he was paid to make this album so much. Im sure he agrees with certain sentiments in it its just so out of left field given that he wouldve kicked those bullies asses at the beginning of the first game and given what I know about the second game (something about noodle and burger war?) I litterally dont think he cares about this as much as this album explores these themes.

Also parappa talks about school like hes in elementary school and not like. what 15? based on what Ive heard about the anime I dont like this, unless it was a deliberate choice ofc bc then idc as long as rodney or whoever isnt having their creations messed with.

It’s SOOOO GOOOOODDDD holy fuck I like. Never played the game bc I don’t have a PlayStation but I’ve been wanting to play it for the entire decade that it’s been out (it came out around the time I was getting into a massive zombie phase so I was rly intrigued). Honestly the show is fucking fantastic. Pedro Pascal is fucking AMAZING, as is the person who plays Ellie and the person who plays Tess, the pandemic is so well done, the setting the world the visuals, so so so good…. And the fucking infected people?? Especially the ones in the second episode??? FuckinG FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC. sOOO cool!! Also I have a big soft spot for the reluctant adopted father trope it’s my favorite ever so I’m like mmmm this is delicious….. also this revamped my interest in cordyceps so I went to the library today and got a bunch of books about mycology and have a little bit fallen into a rabbit hole!!! TLDR it’s fucking amazing 10/10 this is epic I love mushed rooms and dads

My hopes for ME5, and a mini rant:

In general, I like Mass Effect: Andromeda. It was the first ME game I played. I never got into the OT when it first came--I wasn't into video game at that point--and by the time I was interested, the graphics were just too old for me to enjoy it. But, after playing Dragon Age: Inquisition about a billion times, I was looking for something new, and my best friend recommended ME:A. So I played it, and I loved it! In fact, I played it three times in a row, completionist, before I had to take a break. (TL;DR at the end.)

After playing the OT when the LE came out, I have more context with the game, and while I had issues with the game when I first played it, I have more now. Of course there are some narrative points I don't like, but those are easy enough to just ignore and headcanon that they happen differently or not at all. My qualms are with the gameplay...

With BioWare working on ME5, there are a few things I hope make a return. Plot, characters, and narrative aside, I REALLY want the power wheel to come back. Not having full access to all of my character's powers is really annoying. I know you can set up different profiles in ME:A and choose those at will, even in the middle of combat, and I get that that was the point of Andromeda and SAM. But, I hope that with a return to the Milky Way, the old power wheel will return to the game.

Second, I want to be able to control my squad's power usage! It is beyond useless to me to have to listen for a squad member to call out that they're priming for a combo of some sort. Most of the time I'm not paying attention to them, and if I don't have a specific power (for instance, I never had Overload in the OT, it was always Garrus or EDI), being able to order the squadmate that DOES is so useful. Like, ordering Garrus to hit the Collector/husk that's bothering me with Concussive Shot so I can make an exit or something is SO much more useful and helpful than hoping your squadmate attacks the same enemy you are and uses the correct power. At that point, why does it matter what power I put points into if I can't even be sure they'll be useful when I need them? I take ME:A squadmates for dialogue only, bc their powers are useless to me.

Minor one here, but I really liked clicking X (PlayStation) to take cover, rather than just approaching something and hoping it's something I can take cover behind. I just like Shep stays in cover unless I intentionally move out of it. On that front, I hate having to press R3 to switch sides. I wish my character were in the middle of the screen again instead of the left or right.

Finally, while I liked jumping around with jumpjets or biotics in ME:A, frankly I could do away with it. Especially if it means that I can map one of my powers to triangle again. Long story short, my right hand isn't as dexterous as my left because of an injury I suffered a long time ago, and pressing L1+R1 to use the third mapped power is difficult. I end up only using the two that are mapped to only one button, so on top of not having access to all my powers, I have access to even less because it's just a little too annoying for me to use the L1+R1 system. In Andromeda, because the jumpjets are X, interacting with things is triangle, and I suppose I understand that. I just think that if DA:I can have the interact and jump commands mapped to the same button, ME:A could, too.

TL;DR - For ME5, I really want these ME: OT elements to return: a return of the power wheel so I have access to all my powers all the time instead of Andromeda's Profile system; I want to be able to command my squadmates to use certain powers at certain times; I want to be able to map my powers to L1, R1, and triangle again, and cut out the L1+R1 buttons as the third mapped power trigger; and finally, I liked clicking X to take cover--it was more convenient for me, and it was easier to tell what I was able to take cover behind.

i bought a ps2 from my work for the hell of it like a year ago bc we’re not allowed to sell electronics due to not having a PAT tester, so it was either it gets recycled and worth £1 (we get money for recycling) or i just buy it without it ever making the shop floor for, over £1. so i did! and now i have a ps2! cool! it cost me £2 :)

thing is is that it didn’t come with any controllers and i don’t have any games so it’s just been sitting in my assorted electronics shelf ever since, waiting for me to eventually get around to doing something with it

so! i have now, finally, ordered a controller online and a couple of games. i also plugged it all in to my telly just to see if it would actually turn on and like, show up on my screen. which it does! success! and although it didn’t come with any controllers or games, it did come with a memory card, which is useful.

the games i bought were deus ex, bc the only way to play it on a macbook requires more computer knowledge than i have, and a crash bandicoot game that i’m pretty sure i might have owned on gamecube at some point.

it’s funny, because i’ve been looking into original playstations, because me and my brother actually had one when we were little. it was blue and it was i think lent to us by someone my dad worked with. most of the games we had were just demo discs that used to come with magazines. but i think we did also have an actual full crash bandicoot game. so most of my fond memories are of the PS1, and asides from that we were always a nintendo family. one game i’m desperate to play again because of how much i loved the free demo is stuart little 2. that game ruled. or, the first level or two of that game ruled. maybe it all went downhill after that. 

also funny is that the blue playstation that was lent to us by my dad’s work friend at some point in the late 90s now goes for between £600-£1000 on ebay. i checked. i thought it wouldn’t be more than, idk, however much a N64 goes for. (another console i am after but costs more than my £2 PS2). (Our dad gave ours away to a neighbour’s kids and we never forgave him). the reason it’s so expensive is bc it’s a something something debugging station that i did read the wikipedia page for and understood not one single bit of.

anyway, i am looking forward to playing my two games. i have never played deus ex but i’ve just watched that three and a half hour video on it’s meh prequel. the crash bandicoot game was just thrown in there for variety. i think both games together cost £11. the controller was £15. and i’m sure i could have just walked into CeX and bought one rather than order it from their online shop with shipping charges, but... i didn’t. i’m not smart.

the benefit of having a ps2 is that, unlike the gamecube, it’s significantly easier to find game for it second hand in shops. it is so incredibly rare to find nintendo games in general second hand, and especially gamecube games. i actually think about this a lot and wonder what analysis could be made here, but i don’t care enough to put any time into it beyond initial observation.
