Giant oceanic manta ray! Can grow to over 6,000lbs and 30ft long. They have to keep swimming pretty constantly, as their gills require movement to respirate. They filter feed by slowly herding copepods and zooplankton and other organisms together, then rushing through the cloud of tiny guys, using their cephalic face fins to channel them into their mouth. Natural predators of adult rays include only sharks and dolphins, but they’re endangered thanks to fishing (both intentional and bycatch), pollution, and climate change.

Dragons of Pyrrhia (headcanon designs)

• Skywings:

-The shape of thorns on the spine is similar to the feathers of birds

-Narrow pupil, giving dragons very good vision, allowing to see a clear picture at long distances

-Arrow point, able to drive through the opponent with a sharp push

-The shape of the wings is similar to that of a bird

-Are the best flying dragons

-High ears, good hearing but inferior to sand and night dragons

-Very sharp claws, thorns, horns

-Pent face; the upper jaw may have various shapes, reminiscent of beaks of different birds

-Height reaches 4 meters

*The design was based on common European dragons and birds

• Mudwings:

-Rounded horns of various forms (like the horns of sheep, buffalo, bulls and goats). Necessary for defense

-The keeper of the horned nest is bigger than the other dragons from one clutch

-Large lower fangs, needed for eating and defense

-A large, rectangular muzzle with raised nostrils facing upwards so that the earthy could breathe, being almost entirely in water or mud and only looking at the top of its head

-Very mobile ears, necessary to discharge dirt/water that has entered

-Solid scale, which in some way pulls the face, because of which the grounders look almost emotionless and dark (this feature appears with age, so dragons look too cheerful and emotional against their background)

-On the sides of the neck and tail are thorns, same as on the back, extra protection for weak spots of the dragon

-Massive tail with a cluster of large thorns at the end, some kind of a pin necessary for protection. The tail itself is very mobile

-Although they are predatory animals, their pupils have square

-Some of the largest dragons, second only to ice, due to their short limbs and neck (reaching up to 5 meters)

*The design was based on ankylosaurus, crocodiles and artiodactyls

• Seawings:

-Long, massive tail with fins that may differ in different individuals

-Behind the ears is a fin with luminous appendages

-Round/oval eye

-Round, flat face (in the perspective where I drew this not very noticeable), giving a more rounded shape to the whole body

-There is a sexual dimorphism (external differences of the sexes). The distribution of the proboscis on the mordocus is different: in males they are near the nostrils, in females on the chin. With age the proboscis becomes longer

*The design was based on snakes, chameleons, dilophosaurus (Jurassic Park ver.), geckos, flying foxes and partly tropical birds

• Nightwings:

-Nose of a bat giving dragons good sense

-More than half of the body is covered with hard scales. Such armor is more necessary for dragonets, whose poison is much weaker than the adult dragons. For protection they curl into a ball, pointing up the tail with a spike. Because of their hard from the genus scales it is difficult to pierce them. By old age, these scales become much softer than in childhood

-End of the tail, namely a thorn, similar in structure to the tail of a scorpion

-Crest has the property of "flattening", so many individuals have some streaks

-Growth reaches 3.5-5 meters

*Design based on girdle-tail lizards and scorpions

• Icewings:

-Narrow-eyed

-The body is covered with sharp scales, from which protrude thorns

-Ear shell, like in the seawings, missing

I like the overall shape of the dragon, its wings and silhouette, like it's maintaining this theme, two. It particularly reminds me of the DAII cover, with the figures of other characters being present in the dragon's wings. the pattern in the background gives the impression of a sunburst or explosion/outwards burst of energy (there's been lots of that going around in promo images for DA:TV over the years hasn't there). :D chunks of rock float around, which by now is associated with Fadey stuff (floating rocks in the Fade), the barrier (Veil) crumbling in key arts, and reality warping in places like Arlathan Forest. the dragon, open-mouthed, golden-eyed and ready to breathe fire, recalls the dragons on the Dragon Age vinyl arts, two, especially with its general position, and the dragon in this screenshot/scene. in the background at the bottom you can even see a hint of the 'concentric circles' pattern that represents the Veil.

I love that this group shot truly does include the whole team, including Assan and Manfred. I wonder if they will come into the field too if we select Davrin or Emmrich to come out with us respectively? We saw Assan capably fighting darkspawn in the character trailer, and in this image Manfred is helping fend the monsters off. Does Manfred carry Emmrich's stuff in his lil backpack..? 🥺 and I wonder what the purpose of Manfred's goggles are. Visually they set him apart from other skeleton/undead-type enemies and make it so you don't have to peer into empty the eyesockets of a skull, but also they're green (necromancy magic color) and we see Emmrich doing magic on them here. Are they part of the enchantment keeping him animated? also happy to see Varric in this one even though he is not one of the 7 companions. also, Bianca is still here. RIP

Taash looks so cool. :D Even her weapons are gold. her upper body armor in this piece has the aesthetic to me of like a dragon's ribbed armored chest and underside. I like that her weapons are unique generally, and from each other too. her dual-wielding like this as [I presume] a warrior differentiates her from Rook who if a warrior would be sword and shield or twohanded. her gauntlets look like they have dragon teeth or spines on them (the sticky-out parts that are not scale-like).

Davrin is at Rook's right hand. ♡ the floating triangles near Bellara show that she is using her magical device. I wonder what the white sphere part of Neve's wand/staff is. like, in this particular image it gives me the impression of a big pearl. Lucanis' eyes are glowing, like we see here, in that way that seems to hint that something interesting is going on there. overall it's cool to see all the team and cast together like this, working together heroically to stave off doom.

some of the monsters the group are fighting at least are red lyrium darkspawn. the ones with 'shark fin'-shaped headpieces are the same kind as the one at that link. are the rest all darkspawn too (there are different types of darkspawn ofc), or are there some walking dead mixed in there? (lol at the one Varric has just shot in the face). the non-sharkhead ones seem to be these guys from concept art. the prominence of darkspawn in this key art give the impression that we will fight a lot of red lyrium darkspawn in this game and that the threat they pose, including the Blight, is a significant part of the game's storyline.

at the center of it all and at the forefront is Rook. in a nice bit of poetic mirroring (the Wolf and the Rook), they too stand on a rocky outcropping, also with the knife - just like this. the knife is blue here.. blue lyrium influence? the very ground on which they stand bursts with energy. I wonder if Rook's outfit here is sort of their default, iconic look, like the Champion of Kirkwall armor for Hawke etc? I love that they have a cape and the point of their helmet gives them a bird-like feel. (omg.. we can have capes in this game fr). they have the Veilguard symbol on their chest. and could they be canonically left-handed..? :)

the Bull Shark Pup aka the shark protagonist from the game Maneater as it helps keeps her safe and is quite friendly and Pomni be gently petting its snout with her other hand.

while the Great White Shark From Jaws Unleashed be silently swimming close to Pomni keeping eye out and ready to attack whatever dares threaten Pomni in her underwater detective investigation.

Details: the ref images I sent were to help show the Bull Shark’s ingame design and what the great white shark looks like even what Pomni wears while underwater.

Pomni would wear a blue red zip swimsuit and diving flippers on her feet and diving mask on her face with a snorkel mouthpiece attached to it. and have scuba tank on her back while she’s breathing from the scuba regulator oxygen mouthpiece in her mouth

and armed with a underwater style like speargun just in case.

Small cute Headcanons: The Great White Shark from Jaws Unleashed would help clear a path for Pomni through a underwater old sea mines environment by biting onto old barrels at the bottom of the sea and spitting them out causing a small Explosion to make a path way.

but if ever Pomni was to distracted while swimming backwards in deep thought trying to figure out the underwater murder mystery clues and didn’t notice the sea mine behind her

the Great White Shark would swim so fast and bite onto her scuba tank on her back to drag her safely away from the underwater sea mine explosion range thus surprising Pomni in the process but making her thankful as she pets it’s dorsal fin in thanks

and the Bull Shark Pup would proceed to keep a eye on Pomni so it doesn’t happen again.

Ragatha is the one who helps provide the scuba equipment to Pomni and secretly is in a relationship with her and stays with Pomni on a Yacht In the middle of the ocean. Also cause secretly Ragatha is scuba diving even swimming instructor and originally helped her to scuba dive

and even sneakily joins Pomni whenever she feels like it.

since Pomni originally didn’t know how to swim and was shy nervous wreck around Ragatha despite Pomni’s serious skills as Detective she couldn’t handle her flustered nerves around Ragatha.

also whenever Pomni climbs back onto the yacht after scuba diving while walking around in her flippers just as she was taking off her scuba gear.

Pomni would always get greeted by the Bull Shark Pup launching itself outta the water and into her arms causing Pomni to be surprised and gently carry the wet dripping small Bull Shark Pup in her arms as she was in curious awe while Ragatha is amused and comments on it.

and sneakily the great white shark would swim and circle around the yacht protectively with it’s dorsal fin sticking out in similar jaws fashion but friendly ness sense to it.

They are very late, but Bubblehorn's existence was reminded to me and I found that I could try to do a redesign for it, but I got distracted and ended up with Night Lights lol

Kinda inspired by @/sparrowlucero's idea of Night Furies colors working like those of wolves so they aren't all black.

These Night Lights are just ideas and there probably would be possible different versions of each patterns but idk. Just ideas

For all we know Toothless was the last Night Fury, so it's theoretically impossible that after so many years his descendants would continue to have black coloration, especially that much of it (unless they are heavily inbreed what after looking at those models is possible-)

To distinguish our main dragon (because apparently the saddle is not enough???) from other representatives of the specie as well as dragons from the background, I thought it would be an interesting option to give the Light Furies (whose genes should now predominate, if not completely supplant those of the Night Fury) and Night Lights a naturally varied color scheme.

Since the popular interpretation is that Light Furies are a semi-aquatic variety of Furies I thought aquatic animals would be the best inspiration. There I have only dolphins but probably some other could be used too (like sharks??)

Thunder is, of course, inspired by the Killer Whale. Mainly because I didn't want to change his design very much.

Notes:

All tail fins are shaped more like those of Light Fury but are ragged like those of Night Fury. I didn't write it on the doodle but wings are more like NF (they are kinda bat-like and dragons were living uderground.)

The wings have a much larger connection to his flank, giving a surface area that gives him the actual ability to fly

The legs are somewhere between NL and LF. Bulkier than LF, slimmier than NF

I kept his big ears. They are funky

Plus I made his body longer and neck thicker

Basically for context Tenenbaum be outside exploring the underwater city depths of Rapture and researching off the marine life in the underwater environment while accompanied by the Bull Shark who helps her out and stays by her side due to Tenenbaum coming across it when the bull shark help fend off and attack a large anglerfish that would try to harm her. And the shark has proven to be quite silently intelligent curious and friendly that amused Tenenbaum a lot but she still thinks shouldn’t be possible.

Details: the ref images I sent were to help show what Tenenbaum wears while underwater and the Bull Shark’s ingame design. Tho I know this will not be in colour and that’s okay!

also funny Headcanon: Subject Delta be underwater aswell watching this cute underwater interaction between Tenenbaum and the bull shark and Delta be trying to process of what he is seeing especially he has never ever seen her be out in the underwater environment and used to seeing her stay inside of Rapture.

But Delta doesn’t try to overthink it and notices the Bull Shark swim over curiously gently nudge it’s snout against his drill as Subject Delta would begin to cause it to spin and roar to life while underwater

as the Bull Shark stays safe swimming distance and watches curiously before Delta slowly stops his drill from spinning

and Delta be quite silently surprised to see the Bull Shark not afraid of him as it continues peacefully nuzzling it’s snout against Delta’s Alpha Series Big Daddy Helmet while underwater and Tenenbaum be scuba diving as she swims over noticing and be quite amused in her own ways.

Happy New Year everyone! Here's to a great year of the dragon!

Behind Druddigon are the Pokémon Dragonite, Charizard, and Garchomp holding up with support sticks a large puppet of the Pokémon Rayquaza. The Rayquaza puppet is a long serpentine dragon, with two arms, and is meant to represent the dragon puppet in a traditional dragon dance. Rayquaza is mostly green, with a glowing yellow line pattern traveling down the side of its body, and red accents on the edges of its mouth and fins. Its mouth is open wide and one of its arms seems to be reaching for the Minior puppet. Holding the support stick connected to the Rayquza puppet head is Dragonite. Dragonite is a bipedal dragon mostly orange in color, with a light tan scaled underbelly, light tan antennae, and a teal wing membrane. Holding up the midsection support is Charizard, a bipedal dragon with an orange body, light yellow underbelly, blue wing membranes and eyes, and the tip of its tail is on fair. Holding up the last support is Garchomp, a bipedal shark like dragon with no wings, dull navy blue in coloration, with a red and yellow underbelly, and white spikes on its body.

There are several other young, smaller dragon Pokémon walking with the parade. Between Druddigon and Dragonite is Dratini, a blue serpent like dragon with a white snout, frills, and underbelly, and purple eyes. Between Dragonite and Charizard is Axew, a bipedal dragon with no wings, its dull green in color with a dark green head crest and red eyes. Between Charizard and Garchomp is Bagon and Deino. Bagon is a bipedal dragon with no wings, it's light blue in color, with a tan belly, and light grey head crest. Deino is a quadrupedal dragon with now wings, a dark gray mane with red spots, and a dark blue body. Behind Garchomp is Goomy and Jangmo-o. Goomy is a sluglike dragon, with a dark purple underbelly, green cheeks, and a light purple body. Jangmo-o is a quadrupedal dragon with no wings and is light grey, with a dark grey underbelly, and yellow accents on its scales.

Flying above the parade are Pokémon holding glowing red lanterns. At the front is Altaria, a birdlike dragon with a blue body and white cloud like wings. There is Noibat, a small bat like dragon that is mostly shades of purple with yellow eyes. There is also Flygon, a large slightly bug like bipedal dragon that is mostly light green, with dark green antennae and accents, and red accents on the edges of its wings, fins, and a red translucent shield over its eyes. Lastly is Dreepy, a small serpent like dragon that's a dull green teal with red accents and yellow eyes. Watching the parade from further up in the sky is the real Rayquza, as well as Latios and Latias. Rayquza's appearance matches that of its puppet, being a mostly green serpentine dragon with yellow and red accents. Latios and Latias are both jet-like dragons, with Latios being blue and white, and Latias being red and white. End ID]

Yeah, bit too much detail/elaboration for me to really do- especially given I haven't played or seen much gameplay for Maneater just yet- BUT! I did do some sketches based on/around what you've given me here!

Taming the Tiger Shark

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a common sight for divers, fishermen, and tourists in the tropical waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They are often found around sea grass fields or coral reefs, and tend to prefer warm, shallower waters near the coastline or surrounding atolls and islands. The northern end of their range extends up to the northern borders of the United States and China, while their southern range reaches down to Brazil, Madagascar, and the eastern coast of Australia.

While they're slightly smaller than great whites, G. cuvier is still one of the largest carnivores in the ocean. Adults can grow up to 4.7 m (15 ft 5 in) long and weigh between 300 and 900 kg (700 and 2,000 lb). Females tend to be larger than males, but the two sexes are otherwise indistinguishable. Individuals are typically bluish gray or green, with a white or light yellow underbelly; this provides them with camouflage, as fish swimming overhead or below are unable to pick out the shark's silhouette against the dark or light background, respectively.

As an apex predator, G. cuvier has few predators of its own. Juvenile tiger sharks will often fall prey to other sharks, including adults of their own species. Orcas are also occasionally known to prey on tiger sharks, but these occurrences are rare. In their own food chain, G. cuvier has a large appetite and will eat almost anything. Coral reef fish are a common target, though their speed and small size makes them harder to catch. More often tiger sharks will prey on cephalopods, crustaceans, sea snakes, turtles, sea birds, and a host of marine mammals like dolphins, dugongs, sea lions, and young, injured, or dead whales. Inadvertently, tiger sharks will also consume garbage such as bottles tires, earning them the nickname 'The Garbage Can of the Ocean'.

Tiger sharks are primarily active at night. Contrary to other sharks, G. cuvier has excellent eyesight, as well as a keen sense of smell. In addition, tiger sharks have two special sensory organs. The lateral line extends down the length of the body and can detect minute vibrations in the water. Ampullae of Lorenzini are small electroreceptors located on the snout; these detect the weak electrical impulses generated by prey. All these features make it easy for tiger sharks to find a meal, and once located their body shape allows them to put on a burst of speed and make quick turns to catch their target. Most of the time, this hunting practice is done alone, but occasionally groups of tiger sharks will gather to scavenge a large carcass or for the mating season.

Male tiger sharks mate every year, while females only reproduce every three years. Breeding seasons differ based on location; in the Northern Hemisphere mating occurs between March and May, while in the Southern Hemisphere it's between November and January. During this time, dozens or even hundreds of sharks may gather to find mates. Females carry their young for up to 16 months, at which time they give live birth. Tiger sharks are ovoviviparous, meaning that eggs are fertilised and hatch inside the mother; this species is also unique in that they employ a technique called embryotrophy, in which young gestate in sacks which are filled with an embryonic fluid. A single litter of tiger sharks may contain between 10 to 80 pups, and each one may live up to 12 years in the wild.

Conservation status: The IUCN has classified the tiger shark as Near Threatened. While exact numbers are unclear, a great many tiger sharks are killed each year for their skin, fins, and liver. This species also has a reputation for vicious attacks, and while they can be aggressive when threatened, only a handful of shark attacks occur each year.

It’s time for some facts about coelacanths!

I said I’d do this a while ago and I forgot so I’m doing it now because coelacanths are the best and more people should know how cool they are! I did not mean for this post to turn out so long but I promise the facts are very good (how could they not be when coelacanths are so cool)

There are two living species of coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, the West Indian Ocean coelacanth, and Latimeria menadoensis, the Indonesian coelacanth.

This is a West Indian Ocean coelacanth, they’re dark blue and each one has a unique pattern of white spots:

And this is an Indonesian coelacanth:

Indonesian coelacanths are noticeably different from West Indian Ocean coelacanths due to their background colouration being more of a greyish brown rather than blue. Their spots also appear more gold due to light reflecting off them :)

Coelacanths are old! The oldest coelacanth fossils date to more than 400 million years ago, and they were thought to have gone extinct about 66 million years ago, until 1938 when one was accidentally caught off the coast of South Africa and found by Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer.

Latimer contacted her friend, the ichthyologist J. L. B. Smith, who confirmed the fish was a coelacanth! Smith was given the honor of naming the fish, and he named it Latimeria after Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer. (Shown below with the coelacanth she found)

After their discovery, people mistakenly described them as the 'missing link' thanks to their leg-like fins, and this myth persisted thanks to the interesting way coelacanths swim, which appears almost like crawling.

Even today they are sometimes called 'living fossils' because of how little they have changed over millions of years. This label is not technically accurate since they are still evolving, but they do have one of the slowest evolving genomes in the animal kingdom, probably because they're already very well adapted to their environment and they don't have a lot of selection pressures affecting them.

Coelacanths can be more than six feet (up to two meters) long, weigh up to 200 pounds, and are estimated to be able to live up to 100 years! They are covered in hard, armor-like rough scales that are themselves covered in tiny spikes called denticles, which help protect coelacanths from rocks and other fish that might want to hurt them.

They also give birth to live young in litters of 10-25 pups and new research suggests they can be pregnant for as long as 5 years! This would mean that they beat out the frilled shark as the record holder for the longest gestation period by more than a year!

(Unfortunately this means that the birth rate for coelacanths is very low, which doesn't help their small populations. The West Indian Ocean coelacanth is critically endangered, and the Indonesian coelacanth is classified as threatened :( )

Coelacanths are what’s called a lobe-finned fish! This means that their fins look more like stumpy appendages than skin that's been stretched over flexible spines. Their closest relatives are lungfish, and that actually means they’re more closely related to us humans than they are to ray-finned fish like tuna or goldfish! Hell yeah!

Coelacanths live in the "twilight zone" which is between 500-800 feet deep. It’s hard to study coelacanths in their natural habitat for extended periods, but they never survive trips to the surface due to the pressure change, so a lot about their behavior is still pretty unknown.

Coelacanths are generally slow moving, nocturnal drift hunters, which means they tend to sort of just eat whatever fish cross their path, but they have a lot of interesting adaptations that make their particular method of drift hunting unique.

First, coelacanths have a hinge in their skull, called an intracranial joint, that lets them open their mouth more than would be possible with just their jaw.

Second, they display an interesting behavior when feeding, where they will float with their head pointed down, almost like they're doing a headstand. They do this while floating along catching prey, and it seems to be working out for them.

Third, coelacanths have a sixth sense! They have an organ in their snout called a rostral organ that functions as an electrosensor to help locate their prey by detecting the electrical signals given off by other animals!

They truly are a unique animal. They even have a caudal (tail) fin with three lobes instead of the two-lobed tail that is common in many fish.

And here you can see the three-lobed caudal fin on a real coelacanth (and also you can have a reminder of how big these guys are. They are not little fish)

It seems coelacanths also have more similarities to their relatives, the lungfish, than we used to think. It turns out coelacanths have a vestigial lung! They have a lung that they don’t use anymore! It’s all shrivelled and wrinkly but it’s there!

They also have a spiral shaped intestine! Some sharks have this too, it’s basically shaped like a spiral to increase surface area for maximum nutrient absorption.

Another way they differ from many other fish is their swim bladder, which is how they control their buoyancy! In most fish the swim bladder is filled with gas, but coelacanths' swim bladders are filled with oil and fat instead!

Coelacanths are also the proud owners of notochords! They don’t have backbones, they’re so old they were around before animals had backbones and they just never got one, they still have their oil filled notochords! Don't fix it if it's not broken, right?

Also, just in case you were wondering, they would not taste good, they are full of all sorts of oils (as mentioned in the above two facts), plus they do have very hard and rough scales. (But also even if they did taste good it would be a bad idea to eat them since there aren't a lot of them left and it's generally considered bad to eat endangered species)

I like seeing them in the movie so I ignore they weren’t discovered when the film takes place in 1914 (easy to ignore) and that they wouldn’t survive the trip to the surface due to the immense pressure change (less easy to ignore but I do it anyway) :)
