normal-type pokemon pantheon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for an introduction, how i have decided to split this up is into major deities, minor deities, major spirits, and minor spirits. i will not be creating anything in-depth in terms of the actual spirits in question, as this is not a correspondence list but rather just a loose guide for constructing a pantheon. this will involve a few concepts to get you started in working with certain pokemon, but again, it is not extensive.
in my personal belief, these spirits are standalone and evolution is completely within the pokemon universe, as opposed to our universe - however, you are free to experiment as you like, and even work with multiple pokemon of an evolutionary tree. this will also be put under a cut for length.
Tumblr media
definitions:
the "major" deities would be equated to the legendary pokemon; the ones with more inherent strength and govern over more powerful concepts that we encounter in the universe (such as governing over the sea as opposed to water). they are less involved in our personal lives, but are still worth reaching out to.
the "minor" deities would be equated to the non-legendary, but still significantly powerful pokemon within the type. they are usually fully evolved. while they do not govern over powerful concepts such as the major deities, they are still powerful enough to be considered a deity as opposed to a spirit. there is a sense of stronger importance with minor deities than major and minor spirits. they are more involved in our personal lives than major deities, but are still less involved than major and minor spirits.
the "major" spirits would be equated with non-fully evolved pokemon, usually a middle evolution. what they govern over is less powerful than the major and minor deities, but are still stronger than the minor spirits. they are more involved in our lives than the major and minor deities, but less so than minor spirits.
the "minor" spirits would be equated with base-level pokemon. what they govern over is the least powerful of all, but are the most approachable and workable spirits to involve yourself with. they are very involved in our personal lives.

Pokemon headcanons!
Combining my passion for Pokemon with my fascination for field guides!
The Pokedex entries do have some fun tidbits about the Pokemon, but are a bit lacking in biological and behavioral information. I have decided to remedy that, starting with some hc's about bird Pokemon.
Starly/Staravia/Staraptor
In the wild, Staraptors mate for life and reuse the same nesting site over several years. Every year, they add onto the nest. Abandoned Staraptor nests are sometimes taken over by Noctowl.
The young Starly stay with their Staraptor parents for up to two months. Once they leave the nest, they join a creche of juvenile Starly. Over time, the birds in a creche will form very strong bonds with one another.
Starly and Staravia both have a gregarious lifestyle. There are reports of their flocks numbering in the hundred thousands, or even millions. What's more, they can fly in almost perfect sync-- forming a mesmerizing murmuration. It is thought that this behavior evolved to confuse predators.
When Staravia are ready to evolve, they leave the flock and become solitary birds. However, they still retain some social instincts-- one of which is allopreening (preening or grooming another bird). Mated Staraptor will preen each other to strengthen their pair bond, and even non-mated Staraptor have been observed allopreening.
Staraptors will even groom other species of Pokemon, although this is more likely to happen with a trained Staraptor than a wild one. Sometimes they will even try to preen their Trainer's hair!
Since Starly and its evolutions are social species, it's reccomended that a trainer have at least one other Pokemon already in their possession before catching a Starly.
Their crests are more for show than for function. No matter what evolutionary stage, members of this line spend a lot of energy keeping their crests in tip-top shape.
Fletchling/Fletchinder/Talonflame
Female Talonflame can be up to 30 percent larger than the males (sometimes called tiercels.)
In the winter, flocks of Fletchlings huddle together for warmth. Sometimes there can be 20 or even 30 birds in one small hollow!
While the Starly family's crests are used mainly for display, Fletchinder and Talonflame use their crests for communication. A relaxed bird keeps its crest lowered, but if excited or agitated, it will raise its crest.
It is thought that Fletchinder and Talonflame evolved their fire-typing in order to give them an advantage hunting grass- and bug-type Pokemon, their main prey. Another theory is that they became fire-type to better deal with cold climates.
Fletchling and Fletchinder hunt prey in either one of two methods. The first method-- flycatching-- involves sitting on a fixed perch and flying out to snatch smaller Pokemon. The second method involves pursuing the prey on foot, often in a run-stop-run pattern.
Talonflame mostly prey upon smaller bird Pokemon, even ones that have a type advantage over them. When they spot prey, they "stoop" or make a near-vertical dive, then strike said prey with their talons. This stuns or even kills the prey upon impact.
Despite behaving much like Staraptor, Talonflame is actually more closely related to psittacine Pokemon such as Chatot and Squawkabilly. The fact that Staraptor and Talonflame are so similar is a result of convergent evolution.

my beautiful tierlist of bird pokemon. based mostly on how cool i think they look with a heavy bit of bias for favouritisim. some reasoning for a few specific pokes under this cut
Hoothoot: Clock owl, gear eyelashes, clock hand ear tufts. Simple and SO effective. Amazing use of the owls natural features but making them pokemon-y.
Ho-oh: Controversial but i love how limited the palette is for ho-oh despite it being the rainbow pokemon. Also its shiny puts it into this position alone.
Rookidee: HUGE fan of how the markings play with your perception of this guy. His eye is simply a red oval but the white cheek markings make it look like hes angry.
Tapu Koko: Not necessarily a bird but the fact that its inspired by a rooster is so cool to me. Love it when an abstract thing can portray a bird.
Corviknight: Sorry but extremely bland. I love the concept but i wish it was more than a single colour. I love murkrow because its only a base evolution but cmon corviknight you should have a bit more contrast than this at stage 2.
Sigylyph: Based on the hummingbird nazca lines, another abstract bird. Lower down because its not technically a bird but i love the inspiration.
Noctowl & Kilowattrel: You should be in the "just a bird" tier but i like you too much.
Prinplup: I like its little button down waistcoat design but its also just an awkward middle stage pokemon.
Quaxwell: I like your funny water shoes.
Staravia: Saved from the just a bird tier by its awesome star motif on its face.
Quaquaval: OVERDESIGNED! Stop being like 3 birds at once.
Unfezant: You got saved from the just a bird tier by your cool mask. You are just a bird though.

Underdog tournament idea: best regional birds!!!!!!
I do love this, but I want to clarify something super quick! By regional bird, do you specifically mean like the dedicated Normal/Flying type that's introduced early on in the games (Pidgey, Hoothoot, Taillow, Starly... etc and their respective families, not incl. Gen 9) all in one bracket or like bird Pokemon by region in 9 separate brackets?
I put together a list of all bird Pokemon separated by region under the cut below to determine if there are enough for that, and I did so before realizing that you could've meant the specific idea of the regional bird ahaha
Gen 1:
Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Spearow, Fearow, Farfetch'd, Doduo, Dodrio, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres
Gen 2:
Hoothoot, Noctowl, Natu, Xatu, Murkrow, Delibird, Skarmory, Ho-Oh
Gen 3:
Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken, Taillow, Swellow, Wingull, Pelipper, Swablu, Altaria
Gen 4:
Piplup, Prinplup, Empoleon, Starly, Staravia, Staraptor, Honchkrow, Chatot
Gen 5:
Pidove, Tranquill, Unfezant, Archen, Archeops, Ducklett, Swanna, Rufflet, Braviary, Vullaby, Mandibuzz
Gen 6:
Fletchling, Fletchinder, Talonflame, Hawlucha, Yveltal, Spritzee
Gen 7:
Rowlet, Dartrix, Decidueye, Pikipek, Trumbeak, Toucannon, Oricorio, Eiscue
Gen 8:
Rookidee, Corvisquire, Corviknight, Cramorant, Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, Galarian Moltres, Hisuian Braviary, Galarian Farfetch'd, Sirfetch'd, Hisuian Decidueye
Gen 9:
Quaxly, Quaxwell, Quaquaval, Squawkabiliy, Wattrel, Kilowattrel, Bombirdier, Flamigo, Flittle, Espathra, Fezandipiti

hello!!
I have not played pokemon in years but your hq pokemon au has ignited a joy in me
I was wondering if you would be willing to share if you had any more ideas about the flying type gym (tenma, akiteru, akaashi) or like.. a theme color? because i'd love to draw them.. (alternatively any visual/design elements of anyone you'd like to see drawn because I am up for drawing any of the hq people!!)
No worries if not or if you don't want anyone to draw the au! I hope you have a good day/night!
hi!! i was so excited to wake up to this ask! i'm glad you enjoy the pokemon au, it's one of my favorite things honestly.
i just want to say that i do not mind anyone drawing this au!! in fact, the idea of anyone drawing anything for this au makes me so happy. i just ask that if you happen to post it, tag me, please! i would love to see it! it's nice that so many people like my ideas.
(this goes for everyone and art based off of any of my posts! i will always love it!!)
so, more about the flying type gym.
so, i'm going to start by talking about the flying type gym!
theme color wise, i'm going to say blue, maybe? or honestly maybe even the fukurodani colors? i haven't thought much about theme colors for any of them (except for alisa) so whatever you think would look the best would be fine by me!
in my mind, i feel like tenma dresses pretty much the same way he did when we saw him in canon though. like, doesn't necessarily dress the way you would expect a gym leader to, lol.
akaashi and akiteru both do though!!
i know this isn't necessarily what you were asking about but i decided to take this moment to complete their teams as well! disclaimer that i'm not really an expert by any means on team building stats-wise but i did my best hehe.
tenma: braviary, gliscor, skarmory, oricorio (baile style), sigilyph
akaashi: noctowl, xatu, dartrix, swoobat, ducklett
akiteru: staravia, kilowattrel, archeops, tropius, mantine
as for design elements for other characters... i'll just make a bulleted list of some of my other ideas :3
i like the idea of alisa being a normal-type gym leader who dresses in pinks and purples. people often think she's a fairy-type gym leader when they first meet her. (the aesthetic of the actual gym is a little different because she's recently taken over after nekomata retired)
the theme color for saeko's gym is the karasuno colors! and i imagine her outfit is similar to what she wore at nationals?
i like the idea of suga having earrings inspired by his starmie! but that's really about it, i don't have any other ideas for what he wears.
ushijima (the champion) wears a cape inspired by his garchomp!! there's a notch in it similar to the notch in garchomp's fin (thank u ash who had this idea). color-wise, blues and purples i think?
and that's about it... really though the design aspects don't have to completely match what i'm envisioning, i'm just happy that you're thinking about drawing something for my au in general!!

his main team is Rowlet, Hisuian Braviary, Chatot, Noctowl, Pysduck and Staravia. he really loves flying around Hisui/the Mirelands on Braviary!

Fuck it, Pokemon teams for the gang (will probably do one with canon characters one day once I figure that out fully)
If you’re curious, explanations for choices (bc I like to pick Pokemon with meaning most of the time) are under the cut:
ATLAS:
Eevee: basic Pokemon with several possibilities to evolve into, similar to how the Noob class is a jack of all trades.
Wurmple: two evolutionary paths and a relatively common Pokemon (in regions where it is found). I would like to imagine what it evolves into varies through each loop.
Staravia: Just a normal bird, really.
Staryu: Water is the most common type, with the addition of Vibes.
ROGER:
Crobat: the classic Pokemon to indicate “person who seems like an ass does actually have a heart.”
Mightyena: Emerald’s Pokedex entry: “They never defy their leader’s orders.” Also runs in a pack, and he’s in an unnamed agency, which is sort of packlike
Luxray: This one’s more of a tactics-based choice because it can see through walls. Very good to have while on a mission.
Garchomp: Strong Pokemon that’s efficient at hunting.
MARV:
Heracross: Part Fighting type (Merc being a melee-based class), and also vibes.
Toxicroak: Same as above.
NEWTON:
Furret: Nimble Pokemon, looks soft (would help with anxiety). Shiny just because.
Duosion: Pokemon that has two brains, similar to how they have a “second” person with them (Fig).
Sylveon: Another Pokemon that would help with anxiety. They have this one because when they were put into isolation, their two Pokemon (see above) were taken away from them. Doc gave them an Eevee so they wouldn’t be Pokemon-less.
FIVER:
Sandslash: Large claws. Alolan form because its typing makes it 4x weak to fire type.
Sneasel: Claws, weak to fire, and its behaviors match Fiver’s when he first escaped the facility.
Zangoose: Large claws, always looks pissed off (same with Fiver)
DESS:
Houndoom: Violent and angry doggy, violent owner. It’s a match made in hell!
Hydreigon: Pokemon that is described to attack anything that moves, so it matches Dess’s ideals.
Honedge: Sword.....
NYX:
Banette: Both were basically “thrown away” (one more literal than the other) and were subsequently possessed by a malevolent spirit.
Spiritomb: Lots of spirits piled into one, and also sometimes a little stinker.
Bramblin: I literally saw this Pokemon and went “yo that looks like Nyx lol.”
MILDRED: Bewear: Large Pokemon that doesn’t know its own strength sometimes.
Drampa: Fairly large, and also protective children. Just a grandma and her grandpa dragon.
Copperajah: It’s Large.
ABBI:
Ledian: This one is just based on vibes.
Noctowl: Part vibes, but also part “owls have good eyesight and that seemed analogous enough to gun sights to me.”
Remoraid: Fish Gun.
Vikavolt: Also chosen for gun reasons.
CHARLOTTE:
Mismagius: Witchy vibes. Same hat!!
Delphox: Magic
Hatterene: Magic, has a witchy hat. Also trans.

the dex entries of the pokémon you train say a lot about you.
PIDGEOT:  It spreads its beautiful wings wide to frighten its enemies. It can fly at Mach 2 speed.
STARAPTOR:  When Staravia evolve into Staraptor, they leave the flock to live alone. They have sturdy wings.
NOCTOWL:  When it turns its head entirely upside down, you know it's troubled by something. If you don't leave it be, it will peck you.
PELIPPER:  It protects its young in its beak. It bobs on waves, resting on them on days when the waters are calm.
MURKROW:  It is merciless by nature. It is said that it never forgives the mistakes of its Murkrow followers.
SWELLOW:  Swellow is very conscientious about the upkeep of its glossy wings. Once two Swellow are gathered, they diligently take care of cleaning each other's wings.
XATU:  Xatu stands rooted and still in one spot all day long. People believe that this Pokémon does so out of fear of the terrible things it has foreseen in the future.
CHATOT:  It mimics the cries of other Pokémon to trick them into thinking it's one of them. This way they won't attack it.
FEAROW:  It's tough and has excellent stamina. It has no problem flying continuously for a whole day carrying a heavy load.
ARTICUNO:  It's said that this Pokémon's beautiful blue wings are made of ice. Articuno flies over snowy mountains, its long tail fluttering along behind it.

Star Trek TOS characters and what bird Pokémon they would have:
(Disclaimer: this is Route 1 birds only!)
Captain Kirk: Pidgeot (male). A classic Pokémon. He’s had it for as long as he can remember. Pidgeot shares the captain’s friendly but determined personality.
Tumblr media
Spock: Noctowl (female). Again, a perfect match for her Trainer in terms of personality. Noctowl usually appears to be stoic and unfeeling, but actually cares a lot about her Trainer. She also likes hooting along to Spock’s playing of the Vulcan lyre.
Tumblr media
Bones: Unfezant (female). The entire Pidove evolution line is very rustic looking, perfect for an old country doctor. And Unfezant has a lot of sass in those eyes.
Tumblr media
Uhura: Talonflame (female, shiny). She’s taught it to respond to commands in almost any language. Everyone says that Uhura and Talonflame are the perfect Pokémon and Trainer pair, and they’re right.
Tumblr media
Scotty: Corviknight (female, shiny). Scotty often has her help with engineering and/or fixing things, since he knows she can use tools. Unfortunately, Corviknight also likes to hoard shiny objects… like tools and tricorders. She is an engineering assistant first, and a menace to the Enterprise second.
Tumblr media
Sulu: Swellow (male, shiny). The green reminds him of the plants he loves to study, and he admires the bird’s speed and agility in the air. Swellow is very energetic and playful, but if he doesn’t receive enough attention, he becomes Avian Menace to the Enterprise #2.
Tumblr media
Chekov: Staraptor (male). Just a Staravia when Chekov first joined the Enterprise crew, but evolved rather quickly. Staraptor understands both Russian and English, and has a high cold-weather tolerance. As a matter of fact, Staraptor gets excited to visit snowy planets!

Pokémon: The Remakinating
Using Google Maps as a Base
If you bothered to read that horrendously long post, if you made it to the bottom, you may have noted that I speculated that you might be able to fit in all of the missing evolutions if you cut out the extra starters. This was idle speculation and I was dead wrong: there are 92 missing evolutions and 45 Pokémon that could be cut if we went after the starters. However, there's far more to this than meets the eye, so I'ma run with the idea.
Additional Evolutions
Like I said, if you were going to include every member of every evolutionary line presented in this Pokédex, you would end up with 92 additional Pokémon. They are (in order of their relative's presentation in the 'dex, then from lowest to highest stage) Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Igglybuff, Wigglytuff, Persian, Golduck, Gastly, Haunter, Magikarp, Porygon2, Porygon-Z, Dratini, Dragonair, Noctowl, Togetic, Togekiss, Mareep, Flaffy, Azurill, Azumarill, Bonsly, Wynaut, Onix, Scyther, Phanpy, Larvitar, Pupitar, Wurmple, Silcoon, (arguably Cascoon and Dustox by extension and included in the 92), Lombre, Ludicolo, Swellow, Ralts, Gardevoir, Gallade, Aron, Lairon, Wailmer, Feebas, Shuppet, Bagon, Shelgon, Beldum, Metang, Starly, Staravia, Shinx, Luxio, Vespiquen, Flotazel, Lopunny, Gible, Gabite, Riolu, Toxicroak, Swinub, Piloswine, Musharna, Tranquill, Unfezant, Scrafty, Yamask, Zorua, Cinccino, Sawsbuck, Galvantula, Ferroseed, Litwick, Lampent, Axew, Fraxure, Beartic, Deino, Zweilous, Diggersby, Fletchling, Fletchinder, Skiddo, Pangoro, Espurr, Honedge, Doublade, Aromatisse, Slurpuff, Malamar, Heliolisk, Goomy, Sliggoo, Gourgeist, and Noibat. If you want to count Mewtwo as being part of the Mew evolutionary line, then you could raise the number to 93; either way, we're just shy of the 100 Pokémon added in Gen II.
If we were trying to hew as closely to the Google Maps Pokédex as we could, these would be more entitled for inclusion than any other Pokémon. Since that's not our goal, we don't really need to consider them, at least not in that regard. And, indeed, including all 92 would be impossible: by gutting all but nine of the starters, we'd be shy 47 slots, as said. If we also got rid of all Pikaclones (those related to Pikachu and Marill for being different enough), we'd still be missing 42 slots. After this point, it's a question of adding or dropping entries, be they members of evolutionary lines (Munchlax, some of the Eeveelutions) or just whole entries in the 'dex. The pseudo-legendaries when including their evolutions make sense to drop, as the inclusion of only their fully evolved forms was meant to replace legendaries in general and in total is equivalent to all of the Kanto legendaries and pseudo-legendaries, but with their evolutions adds twelve additional Pokémon. Regardless, it can't be fully inclusive and still remain at 151.
But there are other ways of approaching this.
Kanto Replacements: This Pokédex in Context
To date, there have been four or five other attempts at constricting the inflated Pokédex: once with the inception of Gen III, once or twice with the Orre games (but only in what you're allowed to use, not with what's present in the setting), once in Gen V, and once in Gen VIII. Each time, we saw a marked degrading of the quality of work put into each Pokémon -- apart from the Orre games, which weren't developed by Game Freak, weren't on the same development cycle, and have always reused models anyway. The short of it is that not only has Game Freak's development cycle per game shrunk, but they spend less time proportionately on each Pokémon as the Pokédex has expanded. To curb this, I think, in the two times they went strongly for a continuity reboot (Gens III and V), they've recycled Pokémon concepts, knowing full well they'd have to include all of the older Pokémon in the end anyway. Some of these are quite obvious: Audino is Chansey for Gen V. Others are more obscure: Minccino was designed as a replacement for Clefairy as a generically cute creature; Clefairy was created with that as its purpose and only later given an elaborate backstory (hence why it doesn't look like a fairy). There are plenty of others.
In the context of this Pokédex, I think a good number of the included Pokémon act as replacements for ones from Kanto, even if they weren't originally meant as such. Bear in mind that these are minor stretches: we're talking replacing general concepts and roles, not necessarily being one-for-one reduxes.
Togepi, as an egg, replaces Exeggcute.
Sudowoodo is the "regional" tree and thus replaces Exeggutor.
Wobbuffet is a defensive Psychic-type with plenty of status moves; that's Mr. Mime, only without Mr. Mime's ability to work as a weaker Alakazam.
Steelix, as the evolution, replaces Onix.
Scizor, as the evolution, replaces Scyther.
Heracross is paired with Pinsir because of Japanese bug fights. Here, it replaces Pinsir outright.
Miltank is supposed to be the female counterpart to Tauros, but since Tauros existed on its own in Gen I, Miltank effectively replaces it.
Combusken is a moderately-powerful Fire-type with a beak that learns Fighting-type moves. The same is true of Magmar.
Blaziken favors kicking attacks, like Hitmonlee.
The Beautifly line itself replaces Butterfree, even as it is on the whole inferior to it. The additional two members and Dustox's typing, move pool, and concept also replace Venonat and Venomoth.
The Taillow line is a two-stage Normal/Flying bird line with little defensive ability, a lot of speed, and an emphasis on physical attacks; that's the Spearow line, mechanically.
Kirlia on its own is an excessively feminine Pokémon, like Jynx.
The Aggron line is a line of ceratopsians that becomes bipedal; Rhydon was probably retconned into being a rhinoceros during development, with Rhyhorn possibly made to be a pre-evolution, but rhinos and ceratopsians fulfill fundamentally similar roles as each other (convergent evolution).
Milotic's evolution is reminiscent of Gyarados's, but in this context it's more of a Dewgong (a beauty evolving from something not so pretty). I'd also compare it to Goldeen, but...
The Wailord line is an extremely generic marine lifeform line with a peculiar but not terribly interesting gimmick (ball/balloon shapes) and as such follows the design philosophy behind the Goldeen line (generic goldfish + odd horn).
Kecleon replaces Lickitung, obviously.
The Metagross line, like the Klink line, uses the Magnemite line's method of evolution, but does it better.
Luxray, as an electric member of the Panthera genus, takes some bits of Electabuzz (which is based on an oni; it has tiger stripes because oni traditionally wear tiger skins).
Combee is a bee, a la Beedrill; it's just less threatening.
As feminine bunnies that rely on kicks and hitting with their forelimbs, the Buneary line is the equivalent of Nidoran Female and Nidoqueen.
Chatot, as a gimmicky Normal/Flying-type, is this 'dex's Farfetch'd.
Being the more majestic of the two dog-lines, Lucario replaces Arcanine.
I struggled with this one, but I think Croagunk is effectively Poliwrath; the Greninja line is the rest of the Poli- line.
Mamoswine is technically a pig that turns into an elephant/mammoth and is Ground-type. The Diglett line is based on Whak-a-Mole moles, but resemble pigs in their snouts (hence the name "Diglett").
Both Rotom and the Voltorb line are conceptually Mimics: creatures that take the form of inanimate objects. Rotom isn't quite a Mimic in that it technically possesses existing objects rather than taking on their form, but the difference in-game is non-existent. The only thing Rotom doesn't do that Voltorb does is explode.
It's not a great comparison, but the Snivy line, being vines and snakes, replaces both the Ekans line and Tangela.
Munna is intentionally a replacement for Drowzee, as both are baku.
Like I said, Audino is Chansey.
Both the Yamask and the Cubone line have to do with funereal masks.
Ninetales was noted as using glamour long before we got Zoroark; the two lines are just type differences on the idea of kitsune.
As mentioned, the Minccino line was designed to replace the Clefairy line.
Emolga isn't a straight-forward replacement for Zapdos, but they do share a type that was unique in Gen I.
The Chespin line is modeled off of armadillos, for which the Sandshrew line (pangolins) get mistaken. Sandslash evolves to resemble a hedgehog; the Chespin line sometimes gets talked about like it had anything to do with hedgehogs, which it doesn't.
Being a three-stage line of psychic foxes, it's pretty obvious that the Fennekin line is a replacement for the Abra line (by way of Vulpix [Fire-typing] and/or Eevee [fennecs]).
The Bunnelby line is a replacement for the Rattata line: both resemble rodents (rabbits et al aren't rodents [Rodentia] but Lagomorphs; however, not only do Lagomorophs resemble rodents, but both orders are part of the glade Glires), both are two-stage Normal-type Pokémon commonly found in early routes, and both learn Super Fang. (The same is also true of the Bidoof line.) For some reason, the Bunnelby line doesn't learn Hyper Fang, like it should.
Talonflame pulls off Fire/Flying bird better than Moltres does.
Gogoat is an elemental, horned ungulate, much like Sawsbuck. It differs in that it provides a mount for others -- like Rapidash.
The Spritzee line is a two-stage line that resembles birds and is technically flightless (by not having Flying as a secondary typing); the Doduo line is similar, save that they are supposed to be flightless birds yet are Flying-types.
The Inkay/Malamar line is themed around using hypnosis as mind-control. While the Drowzee and Gastly lines both did that, the first line of tentacle monsters we saw doing so (despite not being able to in the games) was the Tentacool line.
Goomy et al are slugs; the Slowpoke line is based on the sazae-oni, which is a youkai version of a turban snail.
Pumpkaboo is half pumpkin, half bat, and has fangs like a vampire. The bat part is clearly Zubat.
As a larger bat, Noivern replaces Golbat; however, as a wyvern, it replaces Aerodactyl (which is probably why Aerodactyl didn't make the cut anyway).
You could argue that Monferno/Infernape (Fighting-type monkeys) replaced Mankey/Primeape (Fighting-type primates), but you could make a similar claim with Pignite and Emboar (Mankey and Primeape being pig-monkeys) or, if you really wanted to stretch it, Scraggy and Scrafty (Dark-type vs. anger).
What else I could find is an extreme stretch:
Unown comes in a variety of forms, kinda like Ditto. More like Ditto, it can be difficult to counter owing to the attacking type it may have.
Oshawott et al use "scalchops" -- weaponized scallop shells. This bespeaks of the existence of something like Shellder and Cloyster, but doesn't adequately replace them. (That said, the Oshawott and Buizel lines are redundant; Buizel is infinitely better than the rest, IMHO.)
I did not find adequate comparisons for Nidorina, the entire Nidoran Male line, the Oddish line, Paras/Parasect, the Machop line, the Bellsprout line, Geodude et al, Grimer/Muk, Krabby/Kingler, Hitmonchan, the Koffing line, Kangaskhan, Horsea and Seadra, Staryu and Starmie, the dome and helix fossil lines, or Mewtwo. Several of these are unsurprising, as many of these have equivalents that simply were not included. Others are overly specific: the remainder of the Nidos are needle-rabbits that become rhinos and then bipedal rhinos, which we've already seen; the Bellsprout line's only major similarities to other lines tend to fall apart quickly owing to how Bellsprout evolves; and Kangaskhan has no equivalents apart from maybe Chansey, being a kaiju kangaroo.
This is all to say that we're on track for taking and running with concepts that have already been done; if we wanted to replace Pokémon line-by-line with Kanto ones, we'd come close to recreating Kanto and thus making a region.
What's Next
The next step is not to try to include every Kanto Pokémon or every member of every evolutionary line represented here, but to look at what we have to see what sorts of new evolutionary lines we could put together.
To wit, as demonstrated in my comparisons above, Pumpkaboo works as a basic bat that could evolve into the advanced bat Noivern. Some things would need to change: the pumpkin itself would need to be a ball or a held item, while the bat portion would need to be shaped even more like a bat; types would need changing, probably to Ghost/Flying and Ghost/Dragon; and perhaps small matters of detailing could be given to make the two look more closely related. It's some work, but no more than what you'd expect in type-changing fanart.
Other pseudo-lines:
Sableye -> Gengar
Munna -> Donphan -> Mamoswine (requires type change)
Deerling -> Gogoat (but it'd be better as either Skiddo or Sawsbuck, obvs.)
Pidove -> Staraptor (shared color schemes)
Pidgey -> Talonflame (shared peregrine cheek stripes)
Scraggy and Helioptile (small, yellow lizards; would need a type change, unsure which would be the base form). Either way, Haxorus would be the final form.
Meowth -> Meowstic
Pancham and Cubchoo could be treated as regional forms of another line, like the Teddiursa and/or Stufful ones. This would open up a slot for an evolved form of varying types.
Pachirisu -> Emolga
Since both Golduck and Lotad are based on kappas, you might be able to make Psyduck and Lotad related.
Bunnelby and Buneary are a little too similar not to be related within the context of this 'dex, but that more goes towards replacing Bunnelby with Lopunny than it does having one evolve from the other. An alternative via recoloring would be to have one evolve into Audino and the other into ... I dunno what.
I'm not sure exactly how you would do it, but given that both are ghosts haunting objects, you could have Spiritomb and Cofagrigus be related.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure where else to go with this. What remains doesn't really look like anythign else by even gross approximation, not without major alterations. And the trouble there is that several Pokémon that remain absolutely look like they need to evolve into or from something else. The proportion of such Pokémon is much larger than in Gen I, too.
Thus, I think we've exhausted what we can do with this Pokédex. It is intriguing in what we've gotten from it, but it's not enough for our purposes. It is what it is.
