Hi! By the time this posts, it should be well beyond the debut of the second series, so I hope you all are doing okay! I am ISO crossovers with small or obscure fandoms which might be more difficult to search. I enjoy recs from popular crossovers as well! But sometimes there’s only one fic in a category which can get buried, and I’m specifically looking for that random good omens- tiny-fandom crossover where someone picks up one of their obscure old fav and creates something exciting with their love for good omens. Thank you kindly!

Hello! This was actually a lot of fun to search for! There's no 'easy' way to do it, but if you want to go hunting yourself I recommend using AO3 to filter out the popular crossover fandoms by adding them to the 'tags to exclude' list and just browsing through what's left. These aren't all necessarily small fandoms, but they don't have loads of crossovers with Good Omens. I'm recommending these ones simply because they sound fun and I want to read them myself!...

Oh, she knows that both Heaven and Hell are watching their actions pretty fucking closely, really, but it doesn’t feel like that. It’s like someone, maybe several someones, are following them, following her. She catches glimpses, sometimes. Of red hair, or a scowl, or white hair, or a cherubic face wreathed in disappointment. But it’s gone as quickly as it came and she’s left doubting if it ever happened.

How She Fits the Trope: The Pollyanna is a trope about a girl who always seems happy, and pleasant, and good no matter what happens to them in life. And their life has not been an easy one, Samantha’s life certainly hasn’t been, but it doesn’t matter, because their outlook is always sunny. There is a term in psychology called The Pollyanna Principle, or Pollyannaism, which is the tendency in people to remember pleasant things better than unpleasant things (the term has become overused and diluted in recent years but toxic positivity). That is very much Samantha to a T. Connection with Greer: Samantha met Greer in High School, though mostly she knew her … just as the girl who was the most popular. Everyone loved Greer, she was so pretty, and complemented people in the hallways and stuff. Samantha is aware that a lot of people say she was very fake, and she doesn’t really know one way or another, but she always seemed very nice to her. She also had a few interactions with Greer through Ollie, when they were out partying together and it ended up back in NYC. They didn’t really hang out but once again, they were always fairly pleasant interactions. The only real significant interaction Samantha had with Greer was one night in High School when she was a freshman and Greer was a Junior, she was getting out of one club later in the night and apparently Greer was getting out of some club, or sport, or whatever. She was heading to the subway, and passed Greer who was waiting for a car, but had been stopped by a couple of guys that were harassing and calling her. There seemed like there was about to be a really bad situation, so Sam stopped and very politely asked them to leave Greer alone. The guys just laughed at her and continued to be skeevy jerks, so she kicked one of them in the junk, and flipped the other off his feet when he tried to advance on her– it was easy, with Sam being so well versed in Tae Kwon Do after all. Greer found it very amusing, and took Sam home in the fancy car that had come to pick her up. She ordered milkshakes for them and they chatted a little bit before she dropped her off. That’s really where the interaction began and ended beyond the casual greetings once in a while, but it was a pleasant experience.

FACTS

Samantha grew up with her Grandfather because her parents were unfit to raise her due to their addiction problems. They aren’t really in her life anymore, but she sees them maybe once a year if that. Her father more than her mother (since she lives with her paternal Grandpa), neither of whom are together. The last time she saw her mom was probably when she was sixteen, her dad came to her High School graduation though.

She grew up next door to Ollie. He’s like an older brother to her, really and they love each other very much. They don’t hang out, or spend much social time together because they have… almost nothing in common, but she cares about him very much. May or may not be taking over the business for him after he graduates.

She went to the same high school as Greer and all of those fancy rich people on a scholarship for all the impressive awards she managed to win for literary things.

She is very straight edge!!

Dragon Age Fanfic Recs (1/11/21)

I love fanfic rec lists because it helps keep an author’s work circulating, and for those of us who don’t have a lot of time to dig deep into the tags, it’s helpful to have someone else point out stuff to check out. So, although I don’t read a ton of fic myself, here are some of the ones I’ve really enjoyed!

Tagged by the lovely @veritascara (and if you think I’m not going to take another opportunity to rec her Star Wars Rebels series Ad Astra, you’re wrong. It’s one of the loveliest things I’ve read in a long time.)

Five Seconds - 600-Year Nap (Mass Effect): “Stimulating the cardiovascular core.” SAM’s mechanical voice resonated somewhere in her mind, the parts not curiously preoccupied with the fact that she was dead.

Stranger in the Mirror (Mass Effect): Like everything else in the captain’s cabin of the SR-2, the mirror in the (private!) bathroom was an absurdly large luxury item for a warship.

Patterns: I tend to lead with short, blunt sentences for the most part. Usually in a paragraph of their own to draw attention to them with negative space. Not intentionally, it’s just something that makes sense to me as I’m writing.

Favorite: I think I’m going to go with Foundational this time. It’s a short retrospective exploration of how the relationship between Zeb and Kallus changed after The Honorable Ones and the first sentences sets up the idea that it’s not the beginning of a new, friendly relationship so much as it is spells the end of their enmity. Finding common ground and their shifting perspectives on one another marked that change, which is what I wanted to explore in that ficlet.

I feel like you're the Varric/Cadash person but I know you've written Varric/Hawke and Varric/Bianca and Varric/Bethany. Ignoring Cadash, which Varric pairing is your favorite?

Oooo.

So I actually just joked that I can ship Varric with just about anyone and it's pretty true. My Varricmance can take many forms.

Although I've written primarily Varric/FemCadash, I actually got on the Varric ship with Varric/FemHawke. There are so many amazing Varric/FemHawke stories and I've devoured all of my favorites multiple times. Eventually in my wanderings I found a Varric/FemCadash story that was short, sweet, and sad. I quickly became obsessed with that idea and read through that tag.

I ran out of road in the Varric/FemCadash tag WAY FASTER than the Varric/FemHawke tag. Last I checked there's 80 something FemCadash/Varric works (30 some are mine) and 600+ in the Varric/FemHawke tag. So I started writing FemCadash/Varric cause it was what I wanted to read and it wasn't there.

In other words:

I'm still more delighted with the idea of Varric and a feisty Carta dwarf than anything else (and lowkey thrilled anyone would think I'm the Varric/FemCadash person) but I do love the following Varric ships very much:

Varric/FemHawke - the classic. So many good fics. Something for everyone here. Here are some recs:

Greatly Approved (Rated M) by damalur: This is quite possibly the pinnacle of Varric/FemHawke for me. Varric’s romance book is thinly veiled wish fulfillment of him and Hawke. There’s a book club. Shenanigans ensue.

Everything, Act 1 (Rated E) by @fasterpuddytat: I actually said after reading this I’d never do a Varric/FemHawke story myself because fasterpuddytat has written it EXACTLY the way I wanted it <3

Father Figure (Rated E) by Khirsah: This is my absolute favorite Varric/FemHawke smut. Varric and FemHawke have this established system of picking sexy roleplaying games that is sheer perfection.

Varric/Bianca - another rare pair that usually only shows up in the background. I personally like fics for these two set before Inquisition so I can work them into my personal timeline of my preferred Varricmance. I've honestly only got one rec for someone else here and then I'm going to rec my own story like an asshole.

Bianca’s Song (Rated T) by sugarhihihello: Set before Varric meets Hawke, details the beginning of Varric and Bianca’s affair. Sadly it is unfinished and I haven’t managed to read what is there myself (I’m such a slow reader, RIP me) but this is absolutely lovely.

Flowers, Lies, and Forgiveness (Rated E): okay this is one of two fics that I wrote for @hollyand-writes but this is my favorite of the two. Set in DA2 sometime in Act 3, Varric makes an unexpected visit to Bianca and throws her life in disarray. This is mostly smut but my favorite parts are actually the beginning and end where I show Bianca’s complicated relationship with Varric and how it intersects with her “real” life (her work and husband). I’ve actually reread this one a few times myself because I enjoyed it and it’s spawned off an outline of my own take on their origin story that I may or may not write someday who knows.

Varric/FemAdaar - do I only ship Varric in hopeless rare pairs? Maybe. @tuffypelly turned me onto this one while I was writing her a gift. I haven’t read any of the fics I bookmarked for this pair (VERY SLOW READER) but I did write a cute little fic for them called Just a Crush (Rated T)

Varric/Josephine Montiliyet - another rare pair that was forced upon me and now I must dwell on, this time because of @enigmalea who asked for it as her donation reward when I was doing charity commissions. There are three fics for them and I haven’t read the other two because it looks like it’s a background pairing (but I could be wrong). I can also ship Josie with just about anyone so it’s not shocking this speaks to me on a personal level. Anyway the fic I wrote for it is An Accidental Courtship (Rated T)

AND MY NEWEST PROBLEM.

Varric/Solas - don’t @ me. There are seven fics on AO3 for this and @blarfkey keeps recommending this one:

too many legs under the table (Not Rated) by clandestineclairvoyant: Solas loses a bet and has to kiss everyone apparently and tbh I’m down for this even though I haven’t started reading it yet.

I also made Solas and Varric kiss in Ink and Other Stains on a Page which I published yesterday. It’s Rated E and I’ve got a FemCadash in the middle.

There are lots of Varric/Cassandra works that just aren’t for me but are wonderful! @sunspott, @jarakrisafis, and @ziskandra all wrote amazing fics lately featuring them and I know I read two/three but I can’t remember which two I read so my bad. I’m recc’ing them all anyway. They were, hilariously, all gifts for @enigmalea who was well and truly pegged by them.

Spotlight Sunday!

I was tagged by @midnightprelude to list my faves from the Black Emporium Exchange 2020! Bear in mind that I haven’t got round to reading everything yet (especially the longer fics), so here’s some I’ve liked so far! ❤️

A wellspring of hope (Bethany/Sebastian, rated Teen, 10,491 words):

The Bethany/Sebastian longfic I’ve always wanted to read for the ship. Excellent and accurate characterisation of both ex-Circle Bethany Hawke and Prince Sebastian Vael of Starkhaven as Sebastian invites Bethany to become an enchanter in his court post-Kirkwall. Sweet and romantic and full of feels; some angst with a happy ending. Cannot recommend this one enough.

The Chemistry Between Us (Bethany/Isabela, rated Mature, 1,870 words):

Another of my excellent gifts from this year! Warden Bethany Hawke needs to spend a night in Kirkwall, so she turns up at the Hanged Man for old times’ sake... and Isabela walks in, older yet still so familiar, and suddenly the night isn’t so lonely after all. Just so beautifully and poignantly written.

Small, Controlled Fires (Varric/Bianca, rated Explicit, 2,010 words):

Oh man, THIS was an absolute delight for a ship I love despite its enormous unpopularity, LOL! Featuring my OTP as a background mention, too! Set during DA2, Varric goes on a trip to an Orlesian Chateau with Marian Hawke and Merrill just to see Bianca Davri, his secret lover. Absolutely LOVED the fire imagery, and the cloak-and-dagger secrecy that reminds me why I love the forbidden love trope so much. LOVE the Varric voice too – very on-point!

On a Wing and a Prayer (Bethany/Sebastian, rated Teen, 6,881 words):

Absolutely fun (and funny!) caper featuring a post-DA:I Warden Bethany and Prince Sebastian as they meet at an auction to bid on an unhatched griffon egg in Val Royeaux. Turns out there is more at stake and they team up to hatch a dastardly plan that involves more than just bidding on an auction. Excellent graphics and gifs that really set off the fast-paced action and dialogue, and I’ve never seen something done like this in fic before. Give it a read!

They were roommates (Carver/Merrill, rated Teen, 1,382 words):

Modern AU meet-cute where Merrill lives with Marian Hawke, and Carver needs somewhere to live, so his sister lets him stay in her flat for a bit... although Hawke neglects to tell Merrill her brother is hot and neglects to tell Carver about her cute roommate. I do hope the author decides to continue this fic!

Tread Lightly (Ashaad/Saemus Dumar, rated Explicit, 10,322 words):

Absolutely GLORIOUS Ashaemad sex-pollen longfic that I feel truly honoured to have gifted to me! VERY explicit. Contains a sex-pollen trope, size kink (I mean, Ashaad is a Qunari, after all), multiple orgasms, and copious amounts of come. I actually laughed out loud in joy when I read the tags and the fic summary: “You know how everyone says to be careful of mushrooms you don't recognize? Yeah. There's reasons.” GLORIOUS.

Lyrium and Salt (Fenris/Isabela, rated Explicit, 1,013 words):

Contains some of the best damn Fenabela smut I have EVER read. LOVE their dialogue and the way they relate to each other – so in-character and I swear I could hear their voices as I read it – and just some of the hottest smut I have read all year. Absolutely wonderful.

A Successful Rescue (Anders/Karl Thekla, rated General, artwork):

Absolutely stunning Karl/Anders artwork set in the Chantry, in a canon-divergent universe where Karl was rescued before being made Tranquil. I absolutely adored the soft lighting, and the candles, not to mention Anders and Karl themselves!

From the chair to the fireplace (Krem/Maryden, rated General, artwork):

Another gorgeous artwork for a gorgeous ship! Krem serenades Maryden on a lute by the fireplace. Muted colour palette.

An Assassin, A Spy and a Silken Rope (Zevran/Iron Bull, rated Explicit, comic):

A comic strip featuring Zevran Arainai and the Iron Bull, beautifully illustrated and explicit featuring Zevran tied up in shibari/Japanese Rope Bondage. Love how the comic was done in grey but the rope is bright red. Very effective.

Hey Bethany, I wanted to ask what tv shows do you love? The ones you've genuinely enjoyed or are currently enjoying, the more the merrier PS you're awesome and everytime you're my dashboard it's something I enjoy or an important political subject, keep it up

Oh, gosh, well, first of all, thank you for the kind words! :) And I’m actually not currently watching much of anything, and haven’t been for the past few weeks, since we’ve been in the middle of what feels like the slowest, longest moving-house process ever. :P (Details about the move under the cut for those of you who are interested.) But here’s an incomplete list of TV shows I love, all of which have their flaws but I enjoyed anyway, in no particular order:

Leverage - It is the show of my heart and I recommend it to literally everyone who asks for a good show to watch. My mom and dad love it. My kids love it. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who watched Leverage and didn’t love it. WATCH LEVERAGE.

Elementary - I’ve been a Sherlock Holmes fan my whole life thanks to my mom, and this adaptation set in modern-day New York starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu is...also the show of my heart. I’ve rewatched the entire series at least six times now and I’m certain I’ll rewatch it again in future.

Stargate SG-1

Community - IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS YOU HAVE FAMILY.

Parks and Rec

Brooklyn Nine Nine - Yes, it’s cop propaganda. But it’s also a show I’ve enjoyed a lot, truthfully.

The Good Place

Superstore - I’m not caught up on this show, but it’s excellent.

Never Have I Ever - DELIGHTFUL.

Derry Girls - The dumbass teenagers on this show look and act like actual dumbass teenagers, and it’s set in the mid-90s which is when I was a teenager so to me it’s extra entertaining.

The Expanse - SUCH GOOD SCI-FI.

Farscape - ALSO VERY GOOD SCI-FI. (See my WATCH FARSCAPE tag.)

Good Omens

Selfie - I cannot stress enough how very well worth your time and heartbreak it will be for you to watch the one season of this show that exists. (The heartbreak is because there’s only one season, the show itself is hilarious and smart and hopeful).

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - This modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is technically a YouTube series, not a TV show, but it’s one I very much enjoy.

Dead to Me - I haven’t finished S2 yet but am enjoying it a lot.

The Great - is weird and wonderful. Elle Fanning deserves awards and Nicholas Hoult somehow makes me loathe him and love him at the same time.

Upload - An interesting premise, pretty smartly executed. We watched and enjoyed it! If there’s a S2, we’ll watch and probably enjoy that too.

Lucifer - I love the characters on this show a lot. The plots are...uneven? But I do love the characters and the relationships, and it’s generally enough to make up for how I feel about the plots. (This show is based on the Neil Gaiman comics.)

One Day at a Time (I’ve only watched the first three seasons, the ones on Netflix, because I wasn’t able to access PopTV overseas. I’ve heard that S4 has been underwhelming so far, which is a bummer, because the first three were AMAZING.)

Jessica Jones - S1 was riveting and fantastic. (S2 was...weird. I don’t think we even watched S3; S2 left kind of a bad taste in our mouths.)

Chuck - especially the first two seasons, I loved. I haven’t rewatched this one in years, so I don’t know how it’s held up.

Veronica Mars - the first season is amazing. The second and third seasons are pretty damn good. The movie felt like a gift to the fandom. The books are entertaining. I’ve never watched season four so I’m pretending it doesn’t exist. The fanfic is truly excellent.

Castle - The first three seasons are really great. It sort of went downhill from there. I don’t think I even watched the last season.

Okay, that’s all I can think of at the moment and this list is long enough so I’m gonna end it there. I’ve definitely forgotten some shows but eh, that’s okay. I hope you found this list helpful, anonymous friend!

If you wanted to know more about our move, keep reading

In early June, movers came to our house on base in Germany and packed up 98% of our stuff and hauled it away, and then we basically camped in our mostly empty house on not-very-comfortable base-owned loaner furniture and lived out of suitcases for four weeks. Then movers came to take the rest of our stuff---a few clothes, bedding, towels, dishes and cooking implements we’d kept behind---and hauled it away too.

That night we stayed at a hotel, and the next morning we got on a plane and few to Frankfurt and then to DC. Then we rented a minivan and drove the rest of the way, arriving, 19 1/2 hours after we left the hotel in Stuttgart, at a hotel near where we’ll be living for the next couple of years. Almost three weeks, some paperwork snafus, and two room changes later, we are STILL living in that hotel even though we actually had signed a lease on a house before we left Germany. So we’re going on seven weeks of being in a kind of moving limbo, and that’s not even taking into consideration the fact that we’re moving internationally during a pandemic, from a country that basically had things under control to a country where our national leaders are telling us that we’re all imagining the dumpster fire, and wouldn’t we like to send our kids back to school in the fall, where teachers are equipped with watering cans?

BUT anyway, we’re back in the States, for better or worse, and there are some good things and some frustrating things and we’ll deal with it all as best we can. And then we’ll watch some TV and cope through fiction. :)

Black Emporium 2020 Fic Recs

A smattering of fics I’ve especially enjoyed so far from this year’s Black Emporium 2020 pieces! Now with authors’ names!

Late, Late Nights and Early Starts - @h1bernate Vivienne/Leliana (M, 5400 words)

A subtle and beautifully bittersweet fic of two complex women letting themselves appreciate something fleeting.

False Steps - too-many-seeds Fairbanks/Female Trevelyan (T, 4800 words)

It’s got clever politics, miscommunications, and trust broken and mended again. A very fun and satisfying story.

there’s no place like home - CoaxionUnlimited Female Aeducan/Female Brosca (T, 6000 words)

A worldstate where neither dwarf becomes the Warden, but they still meet up. A really well-paced and exciting fic with a great story and great character dynamics.

The Chemistry Between Us - cullenlovesmen Isabela/Bethany (M, 1800 words)

There’s something so sweet about Warden Bethany meeting Isabela again after years spent apart, where they find themselves equals (with a surprising amount in common!)

Before the Forge Goes Cold - @jarakrisafis Branka/Hespith (G, 400 words)

Somehow this ship never occurred to me before, but this short fic really got the wheels in my brain spinning. (Pairs well with this lovely Branka/Hespith art - An Afternoon of Quiet Research.)

A Worthy Ally - Sheeana Anders/Male Hawke/Justice (T, 1700 words)

I like reading polyamory negotiations and anything with Justice is bound to be an unusual riff on that theme. Really enjoyed the character voice of the Purple Hawke at the center of this one.

A Crown of Gold - Toshi_Nama Ser Cauthrien/Anora Mac Tir (T, 1000 words)

I am gay and I love a lady knight pining after a queen-to-be. I do not need any further justification for how much I enjoyed this.

Hero - @kauriart Male Cousland/Loghain Mac Tir (E, 4600 words)

I’m kind of losing my mind over what an excellent fic this is. Showing my ass a bit with this rec, but we simply love a thoughtful tragedy-with-a-glimmer-of-hope character study, plus angsty sex. Mind the tags.

Okay, for ROM, as far as I know there’s only one and it’s the one I wrote: Destiny - it’s a Ria (Rachel x Jia) fluff fic I wrote, though it’s just a one shot. (Definitely wanna write more for them, though!)

As for Story Thieves fics I wrote, they’re all on AO3, but I’ll link them here for easier access:

Everything About You Is Just Terrible - Set between Stolen Chapters and Secret Origins. Tired of constantly messing up, Owen gets a SQUIP from the Be More Chill book in order to fix himself. (While knowledge of the book/musical is recommended, it’s not needed to read the fic.) One shot. No ships. Focuses on Owen/Bethany friendship. Warnings for angst.

The Flesh Will Have Its Way - Inspired by Hadestown/the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. One shot. Kielany. Warnings for character death and implied suicide.

Story Borrowers - A Borrowers Au of Story Thieves. It’s best to know The Borrowers by Mary Norton, or the movie The Secret World of Arietty to know what Borrowers are. Ongoing series. Only one story so far since I’m still working on the second part. No warnings for the story I currently have out, but there may be angst in future stories. I don’t plan for this series to be very ship focused.

Dreams Are Sweet Until They’re Not - A Hanahaki fic where Gwen develops the Hanahaki disease. Mostly a one shot, but I wrote three separate endings because I couldn’t decide how I wanted it to end (I’m planning on rewriting the second ending though, that one was rushed). Mostly Kielany/Gwethany. Focuses on Owen/Gwen friendship. Warnings for a lot of angst.

A Tiny Problem - After a battle with a new villain in Jupiter City, Orion is shrunk down to 4 inches tall. 11 chapters and finished. No ships (unless you want to count Christian x Catherine, but even then their romance is barely there). Focuses on Orion bonding with the Sandersons. Warnings for some angst.

Speaking of Tiny!Orion, I loved the idea so much that I also make other Tiny!Orion fics that don’t fit into the main story for reasons. Read them here! (Plus more to come in the future!)

Riley High School - A high school Au of Story Thieves. Ongoing series. Current canon ship: Kwethany (Gwen x Bethany x Kiel). Focuses more on friendship and interactions between the main seven, though (Kara is joining their group in sophomore year. Sorry to Kara fans who have to wait for her, this includes myself lol). No major warnings, as it’s mostly Slice of Life (there is angst, but I wouldn’t say it’s that bad).

Want a laugh? Here’s a story where I just put chapters of the High School Au through 10+ languages on Google Translate then put them back to English to see the result.

Big Brother - An Au where Orion joins Christian and Catherine in the nonfictional world and gets to be Bethany’s older brother. Ongoing (only 1 chapter up right now). No ships, focuses on Orion/Bethany sibling relationship. Currently no warnings for angst, but no guarantees for the future chapters :)

School Day - Part of a project I did with friends where we wrote about the Story Thieves kids but they’re young children. One shot. No ships. Focuses entirely on Bethany. Warnings for angst (isolation, loneliness, all that good stuff I projected onto her :D)

Baby Story Thieves - This is the project I mentioned earlier that I did with my friends. It’s still ongoing, as we still have to finish the other kids’ stories, but aside from mine, we also have a story with young Kiel and Charm, and a story with young Orion. The Kiel and Charm one has some angst, but not too much, it’s more humorous if anything. The Orion one is very angsty. Warnings for character death. No ship focuses in any of these.

Story Thieves: Crashing Clouds - A free verse poem where Owen gets hurt and lands in the hospital. One shot. No ships, focuses on Bethany/Owen/Kiel friendship. Warnings for angst.

I’m Not Scared, Neither Are the Stars - Orion’s feelings after finding out that Christian and Catherine are engaged. One shot. No ships (unless you count the very background Christian x Catherine). Orion focused, along with Orion/OC friendship. Warnings for some angst, but not too much.

Left Behind - What happens to Moira after Stolen Chapters. Ongoing (currently 4 chapters). No ships. Moira focused. Only warnings for some swearing, but there’s nothing really needing warnings outside of that.

Reality Check - I’m pretty sure this is the most popular fic in our small fandom, but I’m recommending it anyway. Au where between Secret Origins and Pick the Plot, Nobody successfully split Bethany in two, and how the events play out instead. Ongoing (currently 54 chapters). Contains Kielany, Gwethany, Kowen, and Chowen, though most of the focus is on Kielany and Kowen. Warnings foR SO MUCH ANGST ESPECIALLY IN LATER CHAPTERS TO THE POINT I TOLD THE AUTHOR SHE LOST HER BONE PRIVILEGES SHES HURT ME TOO MUCH IN THIS FIC

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) - by the same author above. A cute neighbors/high school Au. Ongoing (currently 4 chapters). Kowen fic. Currently no angst (or at least not much) but it does seem to imply emotional abuse with Kara. Not to mention this is from the author of Reality Check and I have trust issues with her because of that fic, so this could get a lot angstier, though she claims she doesn’t plan for it, but also idk.

Halloween Thieves - A cute story about the Story Thieves gang and Halloween. One shot. No ships, focuses entirely on their friendships. No warnings.

you are my home - Set during the end of Stolen Chapters with Kiel and Bethany saying goodbye to each other. One shot. Kielany focused. No warnings.

Nobody the drag queen - Crackfic Au thing where Nobody is a drag queen with mannequin friends. Don’t take it too seriously. Finished(?) two chapters. Second chapter focuses on Nobody x Everybody (if you don’t understand you really shouldn’t. I’ve contributed to this ship and even I don’t fully understand it). Warnings for the usual ridiculousness of a crackfic.

Kowen Secret Kiss Choice - A “hidden” chapter of Pick the Plot where Owen and Kara kiss. One shot. Kowen focused. No warnings.

Pink Lotuses and Cornflowers Blues - A story about Kara and Kiel’s friendship. Involves a lot of flower symbolism. One shot. No ships, focuses on Kara/Kiel friendship, with a bit of Orion with them towards the end. Warnings for angst from Kara’s end, but mostly nightmares.

Home - Gwen and Bethany find home in each other. One shot. Gwethany focused. No warnings.

Souls of the Fictional - Soulmate Au where your soulmate’s first words to you are written on your arm. Owen realizes who his soulmate is the moment he reads the first page of the first Kiel Gnomenfoot book. Ongoing (currently 1 chapter). Gnowen focused. No warnings so far.

The Next Battle - Five years later, the seven have to work together again after finding out that Fowen, Dolores, and the Countess escaped the Time Prison. Ongoing (currently 3 chapters). According to the author, the story will have Kowen, Chowen, Kielany, and Gwethany, though currently Chowen and Kielany are canon. No warnings so far, but I can’t say for sure for the rest of the story.

There’s definitely more fics out there, some I’ve read and others I haven’t, but in my opinion, these are definitely ones to read! (Plus this list is already long enough lol.)

2019 Year in Review!

Thank you so much to @thejeeperswife for the tag! Gonna say right up front that I’m not tagging anyone, but if you want to do this, you definitely should!!

If you’d asked me without my looking, I’d have said I only did one thing this year. It really felt like it, at least. Like all I did this year was work on Recreate His Worldly Glory.

Apparently that’s not true, though! Apparently I posted a whole 15 fics over the course of 2019, with at least another 5 or 6 WIPs in the wings. 124,660 words total posted to AO3 is not bad at all, if I may say so myself. As for total written this year, I have no idea. I started keeping track in a google sheet at @barbex‘s excellent suggestion, but that fell apart somewhere after the summer at around 104k.

What I Wrote

Recreate His Worldly Glory: 76112 words so far, 13/36 chapters posted. Rated T, Sebastian/Hawke. Starts after the end of DA2 and follows Sebastian and the gang to Starkhaven. Chaste Sebastian. Happy ending.

If I Were a Wise Man, I Would Know My Part: 29357 words, 11/11 chapters posted. Rated E. ALL THE TROPES! Fake relationship, snowed in, hypothermia that leads to cuddling for warmth. Happy ending.

Are You Jealous?: 1793 words, Rated T, Alistair/Cullen. Alistair finds his way to Cullen's office in Skyhold. Cullen shouldn't care that Alistair's been spending time with Hawke, but he does, maybe more than he cares to admit.

Turned to Stone: 1706 words, Rated G, Sebastian/Fenris. A Beauty and the Beast AU, where Fenris is cursed by a Tevinter magister to turn to stone if he can not love and be loved in return.

Aftermath: 1033 words, Rated G, Sulahnassan Lavellan/Cullen. Cullen has a bit of a breakdown at the war table. Sulahn comes to find him afterwards.

Who Will Watch the Watchers?: 1296 words, Rated G, Eorryn Cousland/Alistair. In which word reaches the Warden-Commander about the siege at Adamant, and those who were lost. (This one is sad.)

Year-End Questions

Number of Smut Scenes? One posted, with at least three more in WIPs. I am terribly shy about smut, but I like having it in a story if I think it serves a purpose, and it will in these, if I ever post them.

New Things I Tried This Year? Finishing and posting an enormous multi-chapter monster. Applying to a zine. Getting picked for a zine.

Favorite Thing I Wrote This Year? The Tale of Corin and Neriah is quite good, I really encourage everyone to get a copy of the zine, not just for that, but also for that. There are also some things in RHWG that I am very proud of and am looking forward to sharing.

Favorite Fic I Read This Year: I have read so much incredible fic this year. I don’t want to choose just one, so I’m gonna do a little rec list now.

A Love Long Lost by @sweetonsebastian. She writes Sebastian so wonderfully confident and secure in himself, and yet reserved when it comes to his past with Cullen, and the potential for them to start again. Cullen is wrecked, and she lets it show. This fic has incredible side characters, a beautiful use of language, so much lovely art, and just the happiest ending. I love it.

Lyrium Skin by @barbex. I devoured this in one sitting while I was getting tattooed this autumn, and my only regret is that I couldn’t type out comments on every chapter because I kept dropped my phone on my face trying to do it one-handed (my tattoo is on my other arm...) Her love for these characters and their stories is so clear, and I love the way she writes Fenris. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

The Far Shore by @aban-asaara. One of the last fics I started this year, but I love everything Asaara writes, and this is no exception. Fenris and Amabel Hawke are going to Rivain, but it’s never that easy. Amabel is a wonderful character, and again, Asaara’s love for her and for Fenris is clear in every sentence. Bright, vivid descriptions, word choice that I honestly envy sometimes because it’s just perfect. We’re only getting started, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.

A Chance Engagement by @hollyand-writes. I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice, so every turn this story takes is new for me. I can only imagine the layers it must have for someone who’s read the original. The lovely Miss Merrill and the handsome Sir Carver are such a pleasure to read. I save this one up and read several chapters at once when I can, so that I make it last longer. A glorious Regency treat with a wonderful cast picked from DAO and DA2 (including the Arishok! Dancing!!)

Sun-Touched by @lucyrne. WHY CAN’T WE ROMANCE VARRIC?! This fic is the perfect example of why we should be allowed to, or someone should, and if not my PC, then Bethany Hawke. Fake dating, trips to Orzammar, dancing and kisses and danger and intrigue. Lucy writes Varric so well that it makes my heart hurt when he’s sad, it’s so good and genuine and him, and the contrast with Bethany’s POV is remarkable. This fic also has a wonderful, sympathetic take on Bianca Davri that I hope people enjoy when they read it. It made me think about her a lot, which I appreciate in a story.

Goals for 2020

Try to write more shorter things and not just coast along posting RHWG and nothing else for the first half of the year. I would really like to spend more time putting Bellial and Blackwall’s story down on paper. It’s racy and volatile and not at all what I’m used to.

I also have a couple big WIPs that I’d like to see finished, including Concertmaster Baggins and my original novel.

I also hope to do a lot more reading. My “to be read” list is embarrassingly long.

Fandoms You Write For: Dragon Age (all of it), Beetlejuice, Fullmetal Alchemist, and some other things I haven’t touched in a very long time, like Harry Potter.

Where You Post: Ao3 and FFN, more the former than the latter nowadays

Most Popular One-Shot: For years it was Ron’s Soliloquy, which was one of my earliest Harry Potter fics. Since I don’t often write one-shots, that’s probably still the answer.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Forever and always it will probably be Flowers of Antimony, the first part of my FMA series. Going just by the AO3 stats, it’s got the most hits and the most kudos of anything I’ve posted there, and that’s not even taking into account the numbers from FFN, where it appeared first. On AO3 it’s getting close to 10,000 hits. The whole series, and that installment in particular, is on so many people’s fic recs lists that it’s truly humbling.

Favorite Story You Wrote: I have a hard time with this, because I love all of my weird little babies in their weird little ways. I will say that I firmly believe the funniest thing I’ve ever written is I Must Be Going, from the Skyhold Academy Yearbook series, because mashing up Dragon Age and The Princess Bride with Varric as the narrator honestly does require the “don’t drink anything while reading” warning we tacked on the opening.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: Uh. All of them? Probably I was most nervous about either Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium, because I wasn’t sure anybody was going to care about Inquisitor Bethany Hawke or my ideas about her, or Cinderjuice, because I wasn’t sure too many people even remembered the old Beetlejuice cartoon, much less could appreciate my nonsensical take on it. But rest assured that I am always anxious when I post.

How Do You Choose Your Titles: It varies, but with the multi-chaps at least, I try to come up with some kind of theme. For instance, in the Twice Upon an Age series, all the chapter titles are lines from the Chant of Light. In Flowers of Antimony, they’re all alchemy terms. I’ve also used song lyrics, lines of dialogue, and terrible puns. As for the story titles, that tends to be a crapshoot.

Do You Outline: I occasionally try to outline, and it almost never works. There’s a reason that I’m mentioned by name on the TV Tropes page for I Just Write the Thing.

Complete: I’ve lost count, truthfully. I am pleased to say that most of my works are finished, but my unfinished ones haunt me.

In-Progress: DA: Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium (that one’s just me) and Bright Jewels, Chained City (with @auroraborealia in the Skyhold Academy universe). Beetlejuice: Bug Princess and the Seven Months. FMA: Chronology.

Coming Soon: I'm only waiting until Beyond Heroes is finished before I get back to the Twiceverse, because Andrea - my bff for whom the series is being written - was promised a sequel and I need to cover the DLC. We also have some more Skyhold Academy nonsense planned.

Do You Accept Prompts: I’m open to them, but I usually downplay the option by saying that I’m not good at it. The truth is that I don’t generally offer because I don’t expect anyone to take me up on it, just like when I reblog ask memes, and it’s easier to pretend I suck at prompts than to accept that people might not want me to write for them anyway.

Wow, that went a little darker than I expected.

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: I’m looking forward to the Twice sequel, I really am. I have lots of silliness planned amid the drama.
