Total Books Read in 2022: 39
This was such a slow, weird year for me in terms of books. Last year I read 53, which was shockingly low (in previous years I've hit/exceeded 100 books easily), so this year really shook me. I had a lot of trouble finishing books, and read half of many books which I really liked but my brain wandered away from in favor of watching, like, 1990s murder mysteries. Who knows, man.
That said, I read a LOT more nonfiction than in previous years, which was a change I've wanted to make for a long time. I also read more longer books. I'll stick the storygraph stats under the jump for anyone who's interested! And as always, feel free to ask me anything about any book I've read.

✨fellow fic writers!!!✨
i’ve been thinking it’d be so fun to do a year end round up with some of our favorite lines or snippets of our own writing of this year as 2023 comes to a close. i was so proud of myself for finally taking the leap and posting my first piece of fic, and i’m so proud of the body of work i’ve amassed this year, and i’m so so proud of everyone else who’s written their little hearts out this year too!
so please, if you’re so inclined, drop your most favorite quotes and lines from your own work of the year in the reblogs!!! i’m so keen to see everyone give themselves a dandy little pat on the back, i think we all deserve it! 🥰🤩💗

hey like ok but. terrible awful au sparked by seeing a killer gifset of the aborted return to sigu sect
li xiangyi who staggers back to the sigu sect and hears all the complaints, all the things no one told him, all the ways he failed and was blind and caused this, hears how even his allies, his closest companions except his Shixiong who he drove away to his death who he got killed who he failed blame him for being arrogant, for being willful, for not being enough
and who is dying, who knows he's dying, walking fatally wounded, spitting blood, poison in his veins, the fury burnt out to smoldering embers eating him alive and Li Xiangyi died in the east sea and this corpse is just waiting to catch up; Li Xiangyi was always known for his speed so it's not a surprise he outran his own death (for a moment, for long enough to register the fatal blow, for long enough to hear the truth he was too blind to see in life)
and then someone actually sees him, and--
Sect Leader's miraculous return. Sect Leader's wondrous victory. Sect Leader's unyielding strength, Sect Leader who slew the demon lord, who walked into the east sea battle alone and came back bloodied but alive, and he'd already all but brought peace to the Jianghu, no one would ever have doubted him, how dare anyone say they did, never, not them--
(no one notices he's dying even when they're told, a decade after his first death; why would anyone look for it now, not even yet a corpse except to himself?)
Sect Leader Li is never the quite same, after the battle, after the loss of his Shixiong; pale and quiet and almost a ghost of his former self, slow to rouse and far more prone to just watching, to listening, to wandering in the quiet hours, staring at the moon like he's looking for answers he doesn't expect to find.
dies not even a year later, alone in the dark, his body found well past dawn in one of the pavilions, covered in dew gone pink at the corner of his mouth, like the last traces of blood washing out into the ocean, and--
well. the sect's already been all but lead by a ghost for a year. what's a few more?

I heard that Edward IV and Elizabeth Widvile were known to be very beautiful. Were there any reports on their appearance at the time?
anon 😂
But yes, contemporaries and post contemporaries in the 16th century were pretty much unanimous in praising their appearance. I'll list some of the ones I could find:
Elizabeth:
'The most beautiful woman in England' ('la plus belle fille d'Engleterre') - Jean de Waurin
'Her very great beauty' ('sa tres grande beaute') - Jean de Waurin
"Her beauty of person and charm of manner" - Dominic Mancini
"None of such constant womanhood, wisdom and beauty" - Hearne's Fragment; its author was one of Edward IV's servants
"A daughter of prodigious beauty' - 1469 Continuator of Monstrelet's Chronicle
"Both faire, of a good favor, moderate of stature, well made and very wise" - Thomas More
Edward IV:
"The beauty of your personage it hath pleased Almighty God to send you" - James Strangways, Speaker of the Commons in Parliament
"The king is a handsome upstanding man" - Gabriel Tretzel, travels of Leo of Rozmital
"A handsome prince and had style" - Oliver De La Marche
"In the flower of his age, tall of stature, elegant of person" - Croyland Chronicle
"One of the handsomest knights of his kingdom" - 1469 Continuator of Monstrelet's Chronicle
"A handsome and worthy prince" - Pietro Alipranto
‘...Tall and strapping as the king’ - John Paston, Paston Letters
"He was young and more handsome than any man then alive" - Philippe de Commynes
"A man so vigorous and handsome that he might have been made for the pleasures of the flesh" - Philippe de Commynes
"The handsomest prince my eyes ever beheld" and "I don't remember ever having seen a man more handsome than he was" - Philippe de Commynes
"A very handsome prince" - Louis XI, from the Memoirs of Commynes
"He being a person of most elegant appearance, and remarkable beyond all others for the attractions of his person" - the Croyland Chronicle, referencing Edward a few months before he died
"He seized any opportunity that the occasion offered of revealing his fine stature more protractedly and more evidently to onlookers" - Dominic Mancini, writing shortly after his death
"He was a goodly personage and very princely to behold...of visage lovely, of body mighty, strong and cleanly made; howbeit in his latter days, with an over liberal diet, somewhat corpulent, but nevertheless noy uncomely" - Thomas More
Etc.
I'm tagging @edwardslovelyelizabeth because I think you got a similar ask?
I hope this answers your question, anon! I don't generally pay a lot of attention to the physical appearance of historical figures (I find it pretty irrelevant), but in this case, it ultimately does play a role in both Edward IV and Elizabeth's historiographies for better and for worse, and seems to have actually been a personal prop of Edward's kingship, so I don't mind discussing it :)
