See, okay, that's one of the things I want to kind of sink my teeth into regarding Sidestep and Herald, who's technically the ONLY politically active Ranger (despite his brimming with both guilelessness and a too many blindspots at this point in the story). Still, he does actively work to implement change, does try to circumvent the shackles of his functions, and helps his peers, especially those he manages to see as systemically underprivileged (see his behaviour towards the LDPD). An Anarchist Sidestep, because they are intensely political, intensely aware of power dynamics within the society they inhabit, and have been TORN free of the positive guileleness they hate in Daniel, present themself as someone who knows what's going on for real and who will, and I quote here, "break the wheel", usher in a new era, change the damn world. And yet they say this type of shit constantly*:

See my point: Sidestep often embodies political anger, which is GOOD and yields result, but they also embody despair, however much justice plays a part into their path--and while their plans fuel them, it's only towards an abstractedness, towards a one-scaled, personal project, and even then only through destruction--not construction, and certainly not ground-level or wider-scaled activism. They rely on the obfuscation that everything they do is a mean to an end, as if revolution WAS an end, instead of a constant progression and a perennial reconstruction.

In the end, they're mired in a similar guilelessness to the one they want to break in Daniel, one that relies on despair rather than idealism, but is still riddled with blindspots. Daniel is in the world, with all the bias that come with it, especially in his position of privilege; Sidestep is too often out of the world, looking at experience through the distorted lens of shortcuts, marginalization, amalgamation (and of course: the noise they hear is deafening). The blinders are on both ways; they just don't hide exactly the same shit. One doesn't exist without the other, which the book drives home even more sharply by constantly paralleling who Sidestep was and who Daniel is, and the middle-points where their experiences and skills intersect, despite very different backgrounds; but yes, as I was saying, idealism and despair cannot exist without the other, just like liberation doesn't exist without community action, and battle without care ethics; or they self-destruct.

Anyway, I feel like Herald's path COULD and might ask--what does that look like, this collision, this similar goal underpinned by contrary means, and how do you find common ground, especially when the two sides have been too-long fuelled and tormented by discredit and tamed anger?

*Case in point: their very twisted rapport to the Regene cause, despite purportedly working to support it in many paths.

ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.

I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.

She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!

This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.

No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.

Hey guys let me tell you about advance fee scams

I hope y'all are familiar with these in this day and age, especially my artists out there, because they're incredibly common.

TL:DR: ANY kind of structure where you supposedly get money but have to give some of it back to someone should twig your scam radar, frankly. (re: @elljayvee)

About half an hour ago I posted a drawing and tagged it #artists on tumblr, and very quickly received this comment.

My scam radar went off immediately, due to the generic blog name and lack of any emotion in the comment, but I decided it might be an entertaining venture so I dmed them. They asked for a drawing "of these", and sent me a random selfie. I got the details and told them it would be $15, and they promptly offered me $300. At this point I know it's a scam, but I play along for funsies and give them my paypal. Shortly, they send me this image for "confirmation" (I blocked out my email)

And they began to insist that I checked my email. I looked in my spam folder and found the following email.

This is fake. This is not a thing. And the "you're to refund the $200.00 back" is the scam. They send vaguely official-looking emails at you to "prove" that they sent you the money, then have you send them $200 (or however much the scam is for). Then, surprise surprise, you're out $200.

I continued to play along for a bit, and in the second email "Paypal" told me that I had to refund the $200 before they could "credit the $300 to my account", along with these lovely threats.

And yeah, it's silly. But it's not silly if you don't know and get scammed. So. Spread, please! And thank you very much to @mlaurel for the opportunity to get these screenshots.

Anyone can be scammed, police, doctors, professors, cynics. The only thing they have in common is that they dont believe they could be scammed because they're too smart or savvy. ALL it takes is the right bait at the right time. (re: @evercaptor)

it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.
