When she'd heard of a market, Cheryl thought of something simple like a farmer's market or small cluster of booths; however, instead the Opalarian market town was just that-- a bustling, overwhelming expanse of different businesses. The only thing she could compare it to was an outside mall, simply on a giant scale.
Cheryl wondered how anyone would build something like this, and just how big this island actually was, as she walked through the market town's streets. So many different people, so many things for sale that seemed right out of a fantasy movie or novel...
Yet, what soon caught Cheryl's immediate attention was another young woman, one that was, undeniably, gliding through the air effortlessly. The sight of someone flying in broad daylight was so much of a shock that Cheryl could only stop and stare, her eyes following the other person until she finally touched down to the ground. Cheryl blinked, even going so far as to pinch her own arm.
Somehow, it was all still reality.
Cheryl couldn't stop her curiosity from getting the better of her, and walked right up to the other woman (she wasn't that far away, after all). She didn't even try to be subtle.

A reminder to the "the American government wouldn't..." crowd. They have. They have made their own internment camps before. They have rounded up innocent citizens and immigrants before. The victims of which are still alive to this day and trying to share their stories with the world, they have been trying to warn us for a long time. George Takei (as seen above) is a famous example of this. He has written about his experiences time and time again, even publishing a book talking about his time in these camps. He may be famous now, but at the time he was just another kid forced from his home. To this day he still firmly dedicates himself to trying to educate and inform people, trying to spread awareness with his platform. The American Government can and will do terrible things. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.

reminders:
if you or someone you know might need it in the next few years, purchase plan b. the shelf life of plan b is 4 years, and we might not be able to access it as easily as we can now in the days ahead.
if you are larger/plus size: go online and purchase ella instead of plan b. plan b is less effective if you aren’t under 160 pounds.
if you can, purchase books that project 2025 is looking to ban.
mass deportations are starting. if you see ice vehicles or agents, yell ice raid and la migra as loud as you can.
if someone asks who you voted for, keep your mouth shut. they’re fishing for traitors.
if anyone, anyone at all asks about your neighbors or their legal status in the us, you know nothing. don’t be the reason that their family is separated.
if anyone asks about your religion or lack thereof, keep it vague. this administration will look for any excuse to persecute you.
your friends are trans or queer? for the next four years they’re not. don’t expose anyone’s status as a trans or queer person to anyone else, even if you think you can trust them.
did someone you know get an abortion? no, they didn’t. they were never pregnant.
in short, don’t be a snitch, and keep to yourself these next four years. we’ll make it through this even if it seems hopeless at times.
we can survive this. we’ve survived before, and we’ll survive again.

This city might have somehow been stranger than that place, but Cheryl supposed things couldn’t be all bad if it had so many fun and interesting places. No mall she had ever been to could compare to the Mermaid Cove Mall, and she’d already spent many hours window shopping. She didn’t really understand the new fashion or gadgets just yet, but she’d heard her own father say similar things in the past, so perhaps it was just something natural. Thinking of her father left her with a bittersweet smile each time, and she couldn’t help but wonder what he would think of this strange island.
He’d probably just be a worrywart…
Cheryl sighed as such thoughts filled her brain; she turned the corner of the bookstore she had been browsing though for the last few minutes. She’d wondered if any of her father’s novels could be found here, but the way this store was organized was so odd. There were young adult novels mixed in with romance or mystery books– just where was the logic here? If there was any, Cheryl hadn’t deduced it yet.
She sighed as she moved to a new aisle. Cheryl supposed she could ask an employee, but she hadn’t seen one upon entering the store. What if there weren’t any? That would be awkward…
Suddenly, movement and a figure thereof drifted into her peripheral vision, and Cheryl jumped. Her reflexes were still a bit jumpy, but she couldn’t help it. Cheryl assumed the large person she saw had to be an employee.
Um, excuse me…”
Cheryl paused, giving the man a more thorough look.
(Talk about awkward…)
