Been thinking about the idea that playing a game extends outside of the game itself recently.
When I get on forums dedicated to the game, explain its mechanics to others using videos or pictures, engage with discussion and community around the game, devising strategies or learning more in depth means by reading wikis and such, could it still be said that I am actively” playing” the game?
To go off of the wonderful folding ideas video about WoW, I am at the very minimum certainly generating patatext for it that affects myself and the play of the game, either through myself or others.
It’s just kinda interesting to think about. There are a lot of games I feel like I have spent hours in, hundreds or even thousands, only to find I had spent maybe only a hundred in total but consumed or created this paratext for.
A good example of this for me is Dark Souls. I know that game like the back of my hand and have played it to completion at least 8 times. Yet, I only have just at 100 hours in it. But it feels like I have more, as I’ve easily watched quadruple that amount of hours in Dark Souls content on YouTube, as well as even more in discussions about the game and the genre. So do I only have my stated 100 hours in dark souls, or do I have much, much more through this “play” without physical play

Ok so I’ve been looking for a good ergonomic keyboard setup for a lil bit now
I use the canary layout and love it
I’ve been looking at a split ortholinear (or at least not row stagger) keyboard for a bit, and I’m mostly down to two options
The ergodox has nice tilt/tent stands that I really like, but it’s quite boxy and has too many keys in the thumb cluster. Voyager has a nice style and the portability is cool (alongside left dominance because gaming).
I’d love any suggestions for other options or opinions on the ones I’m considering now!

PLKeyboard Week 0
Hello! I am Phoenix Lightning. You can also find me at the account @phoenixacxf! I am a college student and I am neurodivergent. Today's hyperfixation is keyboard layouts! So, I decided I'm going to start creating my own keyboard layout. This page is so I can document the process. Right now, I am going to be logging everything I write and start creating my layout at the end of the upcoming week. I will make updates every week or so on my commonly used words, letters, bigrams, and digraphs. Every month, I will try to update the PLKeyboard layout. Within this first month, I will update it weekly. I want to show the evolution of the layout as I create it.
I currently main on the Colemak keyboard layout, so I plan on using it most of the time. As I continue to post, and as I continue to create the layout, I might swap to it.
This layout is going to be made specifically for me, hence why I will be calling it the PLKeyboard. I am going to be prioritizing the following things:
The ctrl+z, ctrl+x, ctrl+c, and ctrl+v layouts should be easy to use (as such, the z, x, c, and v keys will stay in the same spots as in QWERTY and Colemak)
I am left handed, as such, I want to prioritize key usage on my left hand.
I want it to be easy to type bigrams and trigrams. Common groups of two and three letters should feel nice to type.
I want to minimize movement across the keys.
I want to prioritize index finger usage.
As I do more testing, these priorities may change and whatnot. I am unsure on if I want to use the middle row as my home row. I am thinking I may want to use the top or bottom row as my home row. I will do ergonomic testing eventually.
Something I will note is that I will also eventually test out split keyboards and other ergonomic modifications to see if I prefer them. This could drastically change how the layout ends up being.
I will probably not start using this layout for a few months, just some minor testing. I only just started on Colemak so I want to continue to use it as well.
Why am I making this? Only because I want to try it out and experiment. I like Colemak over QWERTY, so I want to see if I can find something I like more than Colemak. If this gets enough of a following, I may open a google forms where you all can input your own text samples so that I can start optimizing this for a larger group of people. I want this to work well for Gen Z in that scenario. In this scenario, I would make both a right handed and left handed layout.
Anyways, without further ado, let's show you guys my top ten letters, words, bigrams, and trigrams as judged based on various writings i had on my google drive (that are purely my writing).
My top ten letters are:
E (not surprising)
T (also not surprising)
A
O
I
N
H
S
R
D
My top ten words are:
the (not suprising)
and
to
I
a
he
of
was
you
it
My top ten bigrams are:
TH
HE
AN
IN
RE
ND
ER
ED
EA
ST
My top ten trigraphs are:
THE
AND
ING
HIS
ERE
YOU
HAT
THI
STA
FOR
In order to calculate my letters, bigrams, and trigrams, I used this app: https://www.dcode.fr/frequency-analysis
For words, I used this: https://www.online-utility.org/text/analyzer.jsp
So, that's what this stage looks like! Get ready for concept 1 which will come out next week!

Poles, as opposed to pantographs, were by far the most popular means of current collection for interurban lines in North America. The pick-up is held against the live overhead wire with about 28 points of pressure applied through a spring-load3d trolley base mounted on the roof. (This is why they are called "trolley cars" -- much to the amusement of the Brits 🛒). 2-rail DCC in HO scale may or may not have a live overhead, but getting the pole on the wire is one of the most fiddly bits of model railroading ever...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Poling" is something else entirely, where freight cars are shunted ...with a pole! One end of the thick pole is seated in a cast iron "poling pocket" on what the Brits might call the buffer beam of the locomotive and used to push against the same poling pocket hardware located on any corner of every freight car. Tight radius, incompatible couplers, adjacent tracks -- all problems that poling solved. Obviously not OSHA compliant, but it was railroading!
Andy Gautrey has done a bangup job of modeling North American traction -- Yakima Valley Transportation Company's General Electric interurban steeplecab freight motor and other very typical equipment and operations that were archetypal of electric lines, especially those that engaged in a large amount of interchange freight business.

I really think we need to make it illegal for people to say "the game is too easy" in a videogame review/critique
#was watching a video reviewing all the pikmin games#stopped taking this guy seriously when he critiziced pikmin 3 for being quote 'too god shit baby easy'#and then i stopped watching when he used dark souls as a comparison lol#like bruh if you're going to criticize an aspect of a game by comparing it to other at least use a game that's on the same genre#or demographic. you cannot compare a children's strategy game to DARK SOULS#also the reason why pikmin 3 (and to a certain extent 4) feel easy is because he's already played the previous games#which are much harder. so he is already familiar with how the games and mechanics work#but like. the thing is. pikmin 3 came out MORE THAN A DECADE after the first two#so it's target demographic was newer and younger players. who wouldn't be familiar with the game or it's mechanics#so for them it would be harder. because adapting to the style of gameplay is objectively hard#HE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS IN THE FUCKING VIDEO TOO#also the reason why the first two games are so hard to begin with is because it was the early 2000 and the ai and mechanics#just couldn't be as refined as they wanted to#honestly every pikming game is easy once you get the hang of it and it's engine#like when playing the first game i got to a point where the hardest area didn't even seem that hard because i was familiar with the layout#and knew the best strategies to deal with the hazards in them#like they could've criticized stuff like how short the main campaign is. how its too linear compared to the rest of the series#or if they want to talk about difficulty they could talk about how unbalanced rock and winged pikmin are#to the point that they make every other type unnecessary#sorry for the long tags. i just hate when people use 'it's too easy' as a legitimate arguing point

Coop as a companion does of course have things that influence his approval generally, as in, unrelated to story-related things as follows:
LIKES
Asking for payment for quests/tasks
Sarcastic answers
Asking questions before agreeing to help people/showing skepticism
Some degree of selfishness
Lockpicking/hacking and stealing/looting (to a degree)
Being vague about personal details/indirectly answering personal questions with others**
Bribing people
Friendly with animals
Friendly with children
Calling him a nickname (especially if romancing him)
Talking shit about The Man From Deadhorse
DISLIKES
Being asked personal questions especially while below a certain approval threshold (very high!!)
Killing for “sport” - a job is a job, going out of one’s way to kill randos tho? No
In line with the above, any dialogue that suggests joy in killing regardless of a “good” moral justification for it (based on his own internal moral compass, the specifics of which he may or may not discuss lol)
Drug use (yes, he’s a hypocrite and knows it but if you’re leading, he wants you focused) though he will take into account frequency of use and he could be neutral about this
Generosity*
Withholding items from the people who asked you to get it for them/lying (like how u can lie to Virgil about the serum)
Dishonesty
Pickpocketing unless required
Using power armor
Formally joining/backing BoS, NCR, Legion, Institute, Children of Atom, Mr. House/any old world corporate affiliated people or the Minutemen***
NEUTRAL
Pro-ghoul, synth or super mutant
Formally joining Railroad or Followers of the Apocalypse
*after reaching a certain (high!!) threshold of approval and/or upon being romanced, this would switch to the “liked” side of things
**being vague/withholding the truth about yourself from him is a massive “dislike” but he likes skepticism of others….if you’re cagey w/him, he will poke and prod and be very annoying/potentially hostile
***re: the minutemen, he just thinks it’s a waste of time, and each of those groups have varying levels of “dislike”. They are not all treated as equal.
