There's a version of the "don't go grocery shopping while hungry" rule specifically for writers where you should never under any circumstances be allowed to touch your draft within 3 hours of reading a really good story. Because sometimes when you read something great your head goes "fuck this is so much better than my stuff I should make that more like THIS instead!" Look at me. That's the devil talking and you should close the document NOW.

Hochdeutsch is an artificial language, and I will fucking die on this hill.

I've been living in Germany for 10+ years, visited Austria, hung out with germanophone Swiss people--none of them speak it naturally. They can, when asked or forced to, in most cases, but all I've seen it used for is reporting the news, use as a lingua franca when English is not an option, teaching the concepts of German to native and non-native speakers alike, and, oddly, mocking the fact that regiolects/dialects/evolution and changes in language exist.

And don't give me "but written language!"

1. Norwegians used Danish as a written language for ages. I don't care about 19th century Denmark's hopes and dreams, it did not kill Norwegian as a language, nor did it make Norwegian a dialect of Danish.

2. I have seen actual German be written down in published works that were not academic textbooks. It's possible, it's just not popular.

Yiddish and Gothic are both oddball Germanic languages occupying unique places in the tree that get erroneously conflated with modern Hochdeutsch because of racism. Idk what to do with this observation but it feels interesting.

During The New York Times’ “Climate Week NYC” discussion with Heritage Foundation president and Project 2025 architect Kevin Roberts, reporter David Gelles outlined the right-wing initiative’s regressive approach to climate change and the environment. Gelles also noted that Project 2025's call to dismantle climate action comes as the world is already experiencing the consequences of a warming climate, pointing out that a record number of people in the Phoenix, Arizona, area were killed by extreme heat this year alone. Roberts responded by pointing to Heritage Foundation research claiming that there has been a “reduction in climate deaths — climate-related deaths — over the last century by 98%.” Not only is this a red herring argument used by climate deniers to downplay the climate crisis, but that reduction is reportedly due in part to improved forecasting, which is done by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency Project 2025 has called to dismantling.

As Reuters has reported, the decrease in deaths since 1920 is largely due to “better forecasting and preparedness,” even while “the number, intensity, and cost of climatic and meteorological hazards have all increased over the last hundred years.”

Notably, Project 2025 calls for dismantling NOAA, which houses the National Hurricane Center, the very agency that has improved the forecasting of deadly weather events and is critical to providing life-saving information. 

With Hurricane Helene in the process of making landfall, Project 2025 architect and Heritage head honcho Kevin Roberts told the Climate Week NYC hosted by The New York Times vomited out climate denialist talking points. Project 2025 has called for the dismantling of NOAA and National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the privatization of the NWS.

Fondly remembering the bureau interview arc, and the fact that Kim Soleum was the only one among his colleagues who had to go through this process to infiltrate it as a corporate spy. Once again confirming my long held belief that he would've made it in the entertainment industry.

This wasn't a regular job interview to him, this was a fucking casting call. Like the professional he was, he recalled and summarized all the info on the bureau as well as its agents' core motivations and character, then used them as reference to construct his own character and backstory, playing up his lies so naturally that he evoked such deep emotions within agent Bronze (the badump moments...)

His performance was fucking meticulous, downright methodical. He got that shit down to a science!! Timed his reactions and even controlled his thoughts when they used that mind reading item on him, constructed an entire narrative to wrap himself up in, and poor, oblivious government agent Ryu Jaekwan, fell for it, and boy did he fall hard.

That whole arc felt like a very long pilot episode of a romcom K-drama. Complete with the montage of their past meetings, their misunderstandings and the progression of their relationship up to this point of their reunion. (I mean they had everything, didn't they: first met through a clandestine arrangement via an online forum, KSE making a great impression as the "kind colleague" who bravely went after his fellow worker in the mountain lodge arc, then being a temporary agent in Sekwang arc, complete w his own agent codename... And now he's here... A tragic former Daydream employee who has 'reformed' after 'quitting' the company)

And while at this point, a lot of people would probably think the protagonist is Kim Soleum... I personally think... the real main character of this drama... Is senior agent Ryu Jaekwan. That man was the one being wooed to death! Kim Soleum was the complicated ML here...

By the time Ryu Jaekwan caves and falls for Kim Soleum's tricks... Lyn's My Destiny was already playing in my head.

Kim Soleum didn't just study finance, he graduated with a degree in Acting and a minor in the art of Manipulation and Honey trapping...
