Fantine getting fired and having her whole life ruined so some smug people might say “I told you so” is so deeply disgusting. Even worse to know there are absolutely people like that in life. It’s just, disgusting

Can a French-speaking person explain to me why Victor Hugo calls her “la Fantine” sometimes? I understand when he refers to mme Thénardier as “la Thénardier” because that can be translated as the Thénardier woman or something akin to that. But with Fantine it just sounds weird to me because it’s not a last name?

I wish there was a way to actually convey in english the transition between the plural and the singular verbs used by Javert depending on who he's speaking to. In french (and in my own native language, greek) we have this thing where, if we are addressing someone important, or even someone we respect, we have to address them as if they're mutliple people? Idk how to explain this in english. In english we just have "you", but in french we have two words for "you": "vous" (plural of "you") et "tu" (singular of "you"). But in greek culture we don't care about this that much and it is very common to talk to the waiter for example or to a stranger who is your age, in a normal way, not addressing them as if they're multiple people. And this doesn't necessarily mean you disrespect them or that you consider them inferior to you, it's just a sign of friendliness and familiarity.
But in France oh boy this is such a no no. If you address a stranger without respecting this formality it is so so deeply impolite. It's the equivalent of calling your Professor "bro". You just don't do it. However, if a state officer does it it's not just impolite, it's extremely offensive, it's perceived as an actual attack, which it is. It's saying "you are inferior, a second class citizen, and I will treat you as such and the state will treat you as such". And guess what, it still happens, but it happens almost exclusively to homeless people, immigrants or just non white people, mainly arabs and black people. These groups of people are often being addressed by the police for example as "one person" (singular of you) and not in plural, and it may sound ridiculous a to someone who is not familiar with that formality but here, it is an insidious but very real way of asserting authority over marginalized citizens while stripping them of their value and humanity.
And yeah Javert of course is extreeeemely polite to Valjean when he thinks he's Madeleine, because he's the Mayor, so he's a superior, so he addresses him using the plural form and of course he uses the singular form when talking to Fantine and of course he switches to singular form when he talks to Valjean later, once he discovers his real identity. This small detail really conveys how Javert treats Fantine and Valjean like actual flies that he can just squash with his boot. Also it should be noted that while Javert has started addressing Valjean in singular form, Valjean still continues to respect the formality, addressing him in plural. Perfect depiction of class hierarchy.

It’s fascinating how Jean Valjean is constantly associated with imagery of being buried alive.
His literal near-burial in the coffin outside Petit-Picpus is the most obvious example of that. But it’s in the sewers chapters as well— he has to face the horror of nearly drowning and being buried alive deep underground in the filth beneath the city.
And that imagery a running motif throughout his entire storyline. His imprisonment is constantly compared to as a burial, a living death; being in prison is like being trapped and drowned underneath an enormous weight, unable to move, unable to escape, with everyone around you refusing to acknowledge you are still a living human being.
In his dream before the Champmatheiu trial, Jean Valjean had a nightmare where he’s surrounded by a faceless crowd of indifferent people, who tell him:
‘Do you not know that you have been dead this long time?’
I opened my mouth to reply, and I perceived that there was no one near me.
The core horror of Jean Valjean’s plotline is the horror of being buried alive. It’s the horror of being constantly told that he is dead when he’s still living and suffering and desperately struggling to escape—- but suffering alone while he’s buried in a place so deep that no one can hear him.

An age-old question: What is wrong with Hapgood’s numbers? Why does her translation state 30 francs when it's unmistakably 35 in the original text?
"So Fantine was watched." Much like everyone else in the town, I presume. Moral scrutiny is a prevalent concern in Montreuil-sur-mer.
It was a joy to witness Fantine at peace and almost happy, if only for a short time (just a year).
Hugo exhibits his typical disdain for elderly women, as seen here: “Madame Victurnien was fifty-six, and re-enforced the mask of ugliness with the mask of age. […] She was dry, rough, peevish, sharp, captious, almost venomous.” Of course, this formidable character would spare no expense to ruin a younger woman's life. (To be clear, this is a sarcastic remark.) On the other hand, by providing her backstory about her abusive former-monk husband, Hugo somewhat explains why she is the way she is.
Fantine's life is shattered, and she is too timid and predisposed to accept non-existent guilt, refusing to stand up for herself. “She was advised to see the mayor; she did not dare.” A BIG mistake! It's disheartening that Jean Valjean becomes an unwitting accomplice to this tragedy due to his "high moral code," which, among other things, encourages people to spy on their neighbours and co-workers.

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Madame Victurnien Expends Thirty Francs on Morality, LM 1.5.8 (Les Miserables 1925)
All this took time. Fantine had been at the factory for more than a year, when, one morning, the superintendent of the workroom handed her fifty francs from the mayor, told her that she was no longer employed in the shop, and requested her, in the mayor’s name, to leave the neighborhood.
This was the very month when the Thénardiers, after having demanded twelve francs instead of six, had just exacted fifteen francs instead of twelve.
Fantine was overwhelmed. She could not leave the neighborhood; she was in debt for her rent and furniture. Fifty francs was not sufficient to cancel this debt. She stammered a few supplicating words. The superintendent ordered her to leave the shop on the instant. Besides, Fantine was only a moderately good workwoman. Overcome with shame, even more than with despair, she quitted the shop, and returned to her room. So her fault was now known to every one.
She no longer felt strong enough to say a word. She was advised to see the mayor; she did not dare. The mayor had given her fifty francs because he was good, and had dismissed her because he was just. She bowed before the decision.

Of course, Fantine’s happy ending last chapter didn’t last. There’s this recurring idea of people randomly disliking her, whether out of envy (for her hair and teeth) or her demeanor (as we saw with the grisettes earlier). I think it’s interesting that here, Hugo shifts from mutual misunderstanding (the grisettes thought Fantine was putting on airs, and Fantine was just very oblivious) to hypocrisy. Fantine continues to be a bit oblivious, but there isn’t as much emphasis on what she does (or does not) do or notice as there is on other people’s obsession with her. This is especially noticeable with Madame Victurnien:
“In her youth, in ’93, she [Madame Victurnien] had married a monk who had fled from his cloister in a red cap, and passed from the Bernardines to the Jacobins. She was dry, rough, peevish, sharp, captious, almost venomous; all this in memory of her monk, whose widow she was, and who had ruled over her masterfully and bent her to his will. She was a nettle in which the rustle of the cassock was visible. At the Restoration she had turned bigot, and that with so much energy that the priests had forgiven her her monk. She had a small property, which she bequeathed with much ostentation to a religious community.”
The political flip-flopping of both her and her former husband already suggests some hypocrisy, as they changed from supporting the religious establishment to the Revolution and then back again based on what was convenient for their interests (like their ability to marry). Even within their beliefs, there are some evident contradictions. Her “Jacobin” husband, for instance, “ruled over her masterfully;” while French revolutionaries were not inherently supportive of women’s rights, that Hugo would choose this language to describe someone who ostensibly supported rights like liberty is telling. Similarly, Mme Victurnien has likely committed one of the gravest offences against religion in the town - marrying a monk - but compensates for that by policing everyone else’s morality.
Oddly enough, I don’t think the description of her is without sympathy, although Hugo definitely doesn’t want us to view her positively. Yes, she’s hypocritical and cruel, but she’s also responding to her circumstances. She’s “a nettle,” and like Madeleine said a few chapters ago, nettles can be great if properly cared for. However, since Mme Victurnien is in this environment where any perceived slight against religious morality can have grave consequences, she feels that the best way to protect herself is to perform piety by giving to the Church and demanding adherence to these mores from others.

les mis censorship adventures 10
lm 1.5.8.
The original french expression could technically refer to Cosette or to Fantine in terms of grammar, but the english translations do all translate it as refering to Fantine 'being that sort of woman', and it makes the most sense.
So again, I think this is a mistranslation rather than censorship, because if I read "«Ce devait être une espèce de fille.» I would also think they're talking about Cosette being 'a kind of daughter/girl' even if that made little sense. But that plus spanish having no gender neutral word for child makes the end result a bit strange:
It became known that Fantine had a son "that must be a kind of daughter"
You have to go with son or daughter there and 'a daughter "that must be a kind of daughter" makes even less sense so. gnc cosette /j
The new translation does translate it correctly as they found out Fantine had a daughter. "She must've been a woman of that type"

Chapter 1.5.8 of Les Mis brings us back to Fantine, and a few moments of relative brightness in her life — which don't even last until the end of the chapter. How different the rest of this would be if she'd gone and seen the mayor — but of course, she doesn't. Why would she? "[T]he overseer of the workshop handed her, on behalf of the mayor, fifty francs, saying that she was no longer wanted in the shop, and enjoining her, on behalf of the mayor, to leave the city."
She thinks the mayor is why she's been fired.
Arai covers this chapter from pages 401–414 (when it was originally published, this marked the beginning of the month's installment of the manga, entitled "The Descent"). There is no named Madame Victurnien, though there is a nosy, judgemental coworker who bribes the letter-writer into letting her know what's in the letters Fantine has been sending and receiving.
And then, the supervisor dismisses Fantine.

The Salat Contact, if you're still doing WIP asks.
Of course!
So in this universe there was a solar system with three planets fairly close to each other that each had rational life-forms. This led to some pretty ugly growing pains. As a result their system developed a contract — basically a constitution — that provided a legal framework for their planets’ confederation. As other systems and civilizations expanded, many of them chose to become signatories of the contract as well, forming a loose cooperation.
The contract gets referred to fairly frequently, so I realized that I’d have to know what was actually in it. It’s just at the beginning of the second section so far:
The Salat Contract
Signatories of which are afforded all the rights and duties of creatures ensouled.
1. Of those who may sign the contract.
1.1. The need for the contract.
1.1.1. The unique position of the Salat system.
1.1.2. The griefs thereof.
1.1.3. The assembly’s determination to prevent such griefs from occuring again.
1.2. Those who wrote the contract.
1.2.1. Those things which must be taken for truth.
1.2.2. The reasoning from those things.
1.2.3. The conclusions reached.
1.3. The purposes of the contract.
1.3.1. To establish a common court whereby disputes may be resolved.
1.3.2. To provide for the treatment of ourselves and others.
1.4. Those who agreed to the contract.
1.5. Those who may also agree to the contract.
1.5.1. They must speak of things unseen.
1.5.2. They must make and keep vows.
1.5.3. They must teach their children.
1.5.4. They must vow to each other as parents potential.
1.5.5. They must tend to others.
1.5.6. They must have desires beyond the physical.
1.5.7. They must plan and execute.
1.5.8. They must make things which do not serve the physical.
1.5.9. They must make divisions of things.
1.5.10. They must judge of acts, to find some abhorrent and others praiseworthy.
1.5.11. They must act with an understanding of death and deference therof.
1.5.12. They must must do such things from their own volition.
1.6. Of the duties of those who have signed the contract.
1.6.1. They must recognize the other signatories.
1.6.2. They must yield to the common court.
2. Of the rights of those who have signed the contract.
2.1. They may make claim upon the other signatories.
2.2. They may appeal to the common court.
2.2.1. Of the common court.
2.2.2. The parts of Justice.
2.2.3. Mercy.
2.2.4. Retribution.
2.2.5. Truth.
