especially in the earlier eras he had to put a lot more effort into styling/dyeing his hair to cover his ears & the blueness/Elf Sparkle. he also wore glasses for a while to dim the Treelight Eyes (because even as badly faded as he is, it's still really obvious with how old he is).

The 19th century was an interesting time for hair and fashion in general.

Many cultural changes were occurring. Europe and America alike saw many integral style periods, all of which gave birth to hairstyles of their own.

The women who lived during the Victorian era opted for more sober and subdued styles, in contrast to the trends prior to that time.

The women earlier would go in for elaborate hairstyles and extravagance. Pomp was the highlight of that time.

Women during the Victorian era liked their hair to be healthy, glossy, soft, and smooth.

This enabled them to style it as well as keep it simple and uncomplicated. The hairstyles symbolized elegance and dignity.

The women oiled their hair to smoothen it and added big curls or tiny ringlets. Fringes were not uncommon.

However, these were also not very flashy. They were simply cut and styled. During the day, women used to don hairnets to keep the hair from coming undone.

It’s important to understand that most ladies of this era had long hair. This gave them something to work with when rolling or plaiting hair into various styles.

However, just as with women today, not everyone’s hair was thick and luxuriant. For that reason, many women employed false hair.

False hair came in a variety of forms, including invisible tufts, comb tufts, plaits, ringlets, and pads.

For an exact match, many women made their own hair pieces—also called “rats”—out of the hair that was leftover in their hair brushes.

Queen Victoria was a fashion icon in her own right.

In the early years of her reign, she inspired the “Apollo Loop” in which a plain or coiled plait of false hair was attached onto wires to create eye-catching loops worn vertically on top of the head. But the use of elaborate wigs made way for cleaner, gentler looks.

The Victorian period of fashion was about living more simply than in the previous era.

Hairstyles eventually became more natural and demure with hair parted in the middle, drawn into a bun or coil, with curls allowed to fall loosely at the sides of the head.

Hairstyles mirrored the aspirations and social changes occurring within society during this era.

The Industrial Revolution saw the rise of the middle classes and brought new fashion for clothes and hair.

By the 1850s, women wore hairstyles incorporating hairpieces purchased from the new department stores.

Additionally, women began using soaps to clean their hair, but this act would strip away oils, leaving the hair stringy and dry. Products to restore hair’s luster included vegetable oil and even bear grease.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the Marcel Wave, invented by Marcel Grateau’s “curling iron,” became a popular hairstyle that enabled the creation of a more natural-looking wave as opposed to a curl.

NOTE:

In 1872, a French hairdresser named Marcel Grateau created a curling iron, which was made up of tweezers in the shape of tubes; the first one concave, and the other one convex. These tubes were heated to curl the hair.

Victorians associated hair with life and love, therefore, it was traditional for women to incorporate lockets of hair into mourning jewelry after the passing of a loved one.

Morningstar family redesigns

I kinda wanted to expand on my choices for my redesigns for fun

So first, Lucifer. I really don’t have a lot of issues with his original design, I think it’s fun and fits within the Hazbin universe! I just wanted to reimagine him.

I always liked the idea of Lucifer having curly reddish hair, something about his fall turning his hair red (this design isn’t 100% biblically accurate as it is just for fun), but I toned down the red to be closer to his original blonde since I also like blonde Lucifer, and I figured he’d liked to keep his hair neat so I decided to put it up and take away the hat

I wanted to keep the ring leader theme in his outfit, but I wanted to further incorporate the snake element in his design since I think he’d be proud of his fall (hence why his suit looks burnt and torn, and he shows off his burnt arm, I figured he’d do this intentionally to remind others of his rebellion)

Lastly I changed the entire family’s main colors to purple, as biblically out of the 7 sins Pride is purple and since he’s supposed to rule pride in the show I figured he’d be more purple themed then red, pretty simple🙏

Next Lilith, I think she was the only one out of the three where I didn’t really like her original design. Not only because she didn’t have much going on, but she also looked really similar to Lucifer, to the point where they almost look blood related.

I think Viv’s choices for Lilith were a bit odd, as she had SOO much potential that just wasn’t used.

I kept her blonde hair but I gave it some tan undertones and I put it up into a semi-low slicked back pompadour inspired by some hairstyles you might see young women have in the early 1900s or late 1800s, but I gave her a little down section that fades into a dark purple and looks somewhat feathery due to one adaption of her describing her as a “screech owl”. I kept the purple theme somewhat like the original and plus she technically rules over pride as well, I would have loved to have given her a red theme if pride was red.

Based on these different adaptations of Lilith a took inspiration from each, giving her a flame-themed dress and the upper body of a beautiful women yet still somewhat demon-like, I also put some fluff at the bottom of her dress since I thought it looked kinda like smoke puffs and clouds. Her stomach is covered with gold rings that look somewhat like a snake belly, and I gave her a necklace with a style inspired by some eastern jewelry, the jewels on her necklace are each the color of one of the 7 sins which I thought would be a fun touch and a little bit of a “showing off” of her role as the queen of hell.

lastly I kept her horns since she is meant to be a succubus, but I stylized them a bit to look less like those big ram-like ones since I didn’t really like how odd they looked against her head. I also gave her long slender fingers that faded to a black naturally as in biblical lore she steals babies from mothers and I thought making her hands that she stole the children with look creepy and eerie yet still beautiful was a nice touch.

Lastly, Charlie! Again, I didn’t really have a problem with the original design. I changed her suit color and theme to prides color, put I made her hair curlier and more red/orange like her dads, and I wanted some parts of her suit to resemble his a bit hence the buttons and the back of her suit going out like her dad’s (but a bit shorter for convenience.)

I imagine her being a bit showy so I kinda decked her out in silver, I thought it’d also be a fun mirroring of how her mom is covered in gold. Her shoes are pretty similar to the original, I put a little split at the front of the shoes in the dark purple since Viv has said she has little hooves which I’m not sure is true but I thought it was a fun idea so I kinda hinted at it with that

I changed her irises (is that what they’re called?) to look more snake-like like her dad, and I gave her little horns since I thought they were cute and I wanted her to maybe show them on purpose because she wanted to blend in more with the citizens of hell so they might feel less intimidated by her presence as the princess, that’s also why I didn’t give her a crown :]

Overall this was just a fun little project I did out of curiosity and boredom, these designs aren’t made to criticize or taunt vivziepop since like I said I love her designs already

Alright it’s theory time. (practically no spoilers I’d say).

This one’s a bit far out there but it’s been living in my head rent-free so it’s time to evict it to tumblr. 

Satoru Hosonaga is Miles & Gregory Edgeworth’s ancestor. YES I SAID IT WAS FAR OUT THERE PLEASE LET ME FINISH

Okay, so if you can’t read the horrible low-res screenshot, the gist is that there are a couple visual similarities between them, being:

- All three have a sprig of hair that sticks up in the back. It’s unnoticeable from the icons alone (exception of Hosonaga), but from the sprites and in-game art both Edgeworths have that little tuft.

Also on the topic of hair, in the AA trilogy icon for Miles his hair color not only matches his father’s a bit more but also Hosonaga’s. (however in DD and SOJ it turns into a much lighter grey)

- All three have glasses. Granted, Miles gets his glasses later on in life, however it implies that they all have bad vision. Poor vision “tends to run in families”, however is not genetic. 

- Both Gregory and Satoru have defined cheekbones. Miles doesn’t, however he is 100% related to Gregory so he is excused for this one. 

- Not written on the image, however on the wiki their heights are all pretty close to each other.

Miles Edgeworth: 5′10′’; 178 cm

Gregory Edgeworth: 5′9′’; 176 cm

Satoru Hosonaga: 5′10′’; 178 cm

Granted, Hosonaga is from the late 1800′s/early 1900′s, so the height likely isn’t accurate. However, it is written on the wiki & supports my argument, so I will be taking it as canon despite its flaws.

THINGS CAN CHANGE THROUGH GENERATIONS. Miles and Gregory have vastly different hairstyles, and yet they’re still related. Skin tone can be accounted to lighting/health conditions. (Hosonaga has a colored background for his icon and also probably suffers from iron deficiency/anemia due to his constant coughing)

Now for personality, I’ll be going off of the Ace Attorney Wiki.

- All three are honest & hardworking.

- Professional/Serious demeanor. (Hosonaga has the wackiest disguises yet treats them all seriously & professionally so I guess.)

- Dedication to the truth. (it’s Ace Attorney what else would it be)

- Caring/Dedicating a lot for family/friends. (Miles to Phoenix, Gregory to his son & maybe Raymond Shields, Hosonaga to Asogi/Ryunosuke)

In conclusion, there is proof that Satoru Hosonaga is an Edgeworth.

Anyways, that’s the end of this theory. Personally, I quite like it, however I understand why many people would prefer other possible ancestors. Hosonaga is a background character that doesn’t have a lot of screentime, but he’s also one of my favorite characters in the whole of the Ace Attorney franchise and he deserves more love than he gets.

Claudia's Hair & Growing Up

I've written previously about how Claudia's wardrobe signals a shift from her childhood self to her adult self but the most clear and obvious marker of her self-perceived adulthood is her hair. In the early 1900s, a girl was allowed to have her hair down or in a half up do until about age 17-18 or when she made her debut into society. After that, when appearing in public spaces, she would be expected to have her done up (and also wearing a hat).

As you can see in episode 4, she has her done in the typical style of a young girl in the 1910s, ornamented with a bow or some other decorative ribbon. In fact, this is one of the clearest indicators to people like Charlie and the guy at the university that she's really young even if she claims to be older. This is a childhood/early adolescent hairstyle and an adult woman would not have worn it out and about.

In the first photo above are the Romanov children with the girls between childhood and early adolescence. Below that, you have adult women in the 1910s with their hair done up and on the right wearing a large hat when out of the house.

However, an interesting shift happens in the 1920s that coincides with Claudia's coming of age and while it's not explicitly explored in the show, it likely compounded Claudia's frustration at her inert physical state. The 1920s was the beginning of VERY short hair becoming popular with women, so instead of marking your adulthood by putting your hair up, many would simply chop off their hair into a flapper bob.

But Claudia CAN'T cut her hair. It would just grow back so not only is her body in arrested development but she can't even style her hair to the adult woman trends of the era. She's not only stuck in a 14 year old's body but she's stuck with a 14 year old's hair length from the year 1917. So what does she do? After episode 5, she almost always wears her hair up especially when out in public and when she is trying to project maturity (anatonizing Lestat, buying things at the pharmacy, meeting with Tom Anderson). While she may not be able to cut her hair to match the trends of the 1930s woman, she CAN at least put her hair up like a 1917 woman. It's literally her one way of controlling her appearance beyond how she dresses.

Final note: while the show in general has pretty accurate and well developed styling choices, the one glaring exception is Antoinette. She's really not styled properly for any era she appears in and I know her looking 35 years old for 30 years is a bit of a joke in fandom but truly her hair is just NOT it. It's way too short for 1917 (needs to be updo capable!!) and kinda too long for the 20s-30s. They really just did not care about styling her accurately at all and ykw that's okay cause she doesn't really matter lmao.

Like look at these from the years 1917 and 1937 and then look at the styles I posted above of the 1910s vs. the 1930s and like????? what is going on here lady!!! You're just not trendy in any era hon.

i keep seeing people complaining about alastor not being black enough and like... i get it but tbh i think there's also an interesting conversation to be had about how that feels pretty in character for a black dude like alastor in the 1920s/30s whether intentional or not.

i just wish more people acknowledged the historical context - namely that it was the height of a time when power and prosperity (two things we know alastor cares about) often relied on proximity to whiteness.

like his hair. all its myspace glory aside, alastor probably wouldn't have had natural hair in that time period anyway - it would have looked white.

natural hairstyles took off in the 80s with the black power movement and were seen as a statement of pride and resistance. the early 1900s were the height of madam c.j. walker (the first female self-made millionaire!) and her products. alastor would have been perming and hot comb tf outta his hair

he doesn't sound black/creole? he would have definitely tried to cover up that accent. having a southern accent alone has the stereotype of being seen as uneducated and low class. of course he would gravitate towards a way of speaking associated with elitism in the us

Request: So the boys probably never had the opportunity to go to school dances, right? I mean in that one episode about when Dean was living in that boys' home I think he was about to go to homecoming and then John showed up to pick him up.

Note: full disclaimer, school dances aren't really a thing in my country, so I don't really know what they're like, but I've done my best!

Story:

"Hey, Cas?" [Y/N] asked as she set some grocery bags down at the kitchen table in the bunker. She was just back from her turn of doing the supply run. The boys were all sitting at the table enjoying a drink, and Sam hopped up immediately to help her start putting the shopping away.

"Yes?"

"Were you on earth at all in the 90s?" She asked him. He looked slightly confused but nodded anyway.

"Yes".

"Really?" Dean asked, setting his beer down. "What did you look like in the 90s?" Cas turned from [Y/N] to Dean to answer his question.

"I inhabited a female vessel from the late 1890s to the early 1900s, I told you that before Dean".

"Cas", Sam spoke up after closing the refrigerator door. "When someone says the 90s, they mean the 1990s". Cas looked confused and Dean chuckled at him.

"Why would I assume a specific century?"

"You just do", Dean shrugged at him then looked over to [Y/N]. "Why'd you ask?"

"I passed by the local bar on my way back, they had a poster up, there's gonna be a 90s themed dance tonight". She sat down opposite Cas at the kitchen table. "You never experienced school dances, or any sort of dance, right?"

"That's correct", he nodded at her.

"Great, well, now's your chance! My high school always had decade themed dances, and I used to love them. You'll come with me tonight, won't you?"

"Um", he looked between the Winchesters for any sign of what he should say, but they just looked at him with amused expressions. "I don't know-"

"Of course he will", Dean interrupted him with a slap on his back. "He's always wanted to go to a dance, right Cas?"

"I um-"

"Perfect! We'll leave at 8. I'm sure Dean can help you figure out what to wear", she smiled at him and stood up from the table, not giving (a now even more confused) Cas the chance to respond. She left the room and he blinked after her before turning to Dean.

"What exactly does this mean?"

Dean smirked over Cas' head at Sam, who was walking over to the table to join them, before looking back at Cas. "It means you're going on a date".

"You have to dress like they did in the 90s", Sam added.

"The 1990s", Cas confirmed hesitantly.

"Yeah, yeah the 1990s", Sam chuckled. "You're probably gonna have to go buy something, though a suit and trenchcoat is pretty timeless".

"Don't worry, we can head out and find you something, you have to make an effort for her", Dean stood up and motioned for Cas to follow him. "We are so taking photos", he laughed to himself as he left the kitchen, Cas following behind him and Sam watching the two of them leave, chuckling to himself at the thought of them shopping together.

[Y/N] had showered and was in her room getting ready. She was excited, she'd been looking for an excuse to get Cas on his own and spend some quality time with him. She knew that neither Sam nor Dean would want to come to a 90s themed dance, so she was sure she wouldn't be interrupted. She'd had a bit of a crush on Cas for awhile, and he was incredibly difficult to read, so she wanted to see if there was anything there between them. She slipped on a skirt she'd found in a thrift store in town earlier that day, as well as an old t-shirt and her denim jacket. She looked up 90s hairstyles and make up looks and was attempting to recreate them while not going overboard - she still wanted to look good.

Giving herself a final look over in her mirror, she took a deep breath and nodded to herself. She was suddenly feeling pretty nervous. She grabbed her purse and left the room, making her way to the bunker's map table where she'd find the boys. She smiled when she walked in to find all three of them waiting, and she almost didn't recognise Cas. He was wearing light blue jeans and a slightly oversized sweater. She'd never seen him look so informal, and despite the comfortable nature of the clothing, he looked anything but comfortable. Dean whistled at her as she walked over, and she rolled her eyes at him. "Hey", she smiled at Cas.

"Hello", he said back. Dean nudged his arm and Cas cleared his throat. "You look nice". She couldn't help but blush at his compliment, even though she could tell that Dean had told him to say it.

"Let's get going", she turned to Sam and Dean. "We won't be back too late".

"Have fun", Sam smiled at her and nodded to Cas, who began walking up the steps to the door.

"Wait, holdup", Dean walked over to them. "Wouldn't be a real dance without some photos of the two of you together. C'mon, Cas you stand behind [Y/N], hold her waist", [Y/N] blushed as Cas pressed up behind her, grabbing her waist and looking to Dean over her shoulder. "That's it. Smile, both of you", Dean held up his phone and quickly snapped a few photos, a smile of satisfaction on his face when he nodded to them and put the phone into his pocket. The Winchesters watched them leave, and immediately began talking about whether or not Cas was going to relax at all.

It wasn't too busy at the bar. Several people were up dancing to popular 90s songs, and a few others were sitting around at tables. "Come on", she said to Cas as she spotted a free table. She grabbed his hand and pulled him towards it, and they both took a seat. "What do you think?"

"It's very colourful", he said, looking around at the decorations and everyone's outfits. "Was the 90s always this loud?"

"In bars? I don't know, I wasn't really old enough to go out partying in the 90s", she shrugged at him. "Do you want a drink?" She asked and he nodded, paused for a second as if he'd just been reminded of something, then quickly stood up.

"I'll get drinks, do you want what you normally get or are you supposed to order something from the 90s?"

"My normal drink is fine, thank you", she smiled at him and he walked over to the bar to order their drinks. She looked around, it definitely wasn't like her old school dances, but the music brought back fond memories of her life before hunting monsters. She watched Cas as he waited for the drinks, wondering what he was thinking about, wondering if she would be able to convince him to get up and dance with her. It was odd seeing him in such casual clothes, he just blended into the environment. Well, almost. He was still a lot stiffer than the people laughing and dancing around him, and his blue eyes were easy to spot in the crowd.

[Y/N] and Cas sat and drank for awhile. It was a little bit awkward at the beginning, usually Sam or Dean would act as a buffer between them, but after awhile she noticed Cas start to relax a bit more and allow himself to smile as she told him stories of her old school dances and everything she used to get up to back then.

"Speaking of dances", she took one last sip from her drink, "are you ready to get up and have some fun?" She stood up and held her hand out to him. He raised an eyebrow but decided to take her hand, and followed her out to where others were dancing. He didn't quite know what to do, so for a moment he just stood there while [Y/N] started to dance to the music. She giggled at him, he looked so lost, so she grabbed his hands and began to pull him around in a circle, and though he didn't quite know why, he was enjoying it. He began to try keep up with her, and he began to laugh as they danced clumsily around the room, trying to avoid bumping into those around them. After awhile she grabbed the sides of his sweatshirt and pulled him closer, wrapping her hands around his waist and looking up at him. Instinctually, his now empty hands landed on her hips, and they slowed down to a gentle sway.

"That was.. fun", he said, smiling down at her. "I didn't really know what to expect, Dean said something about making sure I 'make a move', and I guess we just did a lot of moving".

[Y/N] giggled and leaned her head on his chest. "That's not what he meant about making a move", she said, smiling to herself. Cas took a moment to think about what Dean could've meant, trying to think back over the conversations they'd had in the past. He took a step back and pushed [Y/N]'s shoulders back so he could see her face, and without wasting more time, leaned down to kiss her. Her eyes fluttered closed and she gripped his sweatshirt either side of his waist and his hands slid up to cup her cheeks. She was pleasantly surprised when Cas slipped his tongue into her mouth, he was a much better kisser than she had imagined him to be.

Pulling back, Cas looked down to her. "Was that okay?" He asked.

"Yes. Yes, that was more than okay. Was it okay for you?"

"I liked it very much", he smiled at her.

"Would you like to kiss me again?" She asked hopefully, and felt both relieved and excited when he nodded and leaned back down to press his lips to hers again. She was so glad she'd spotted the poster earlier that day, and that Cas had agreed to come along. She wasn't looking forward to Sam and Dean's inevitable interrogation when they'd go home later, but for now, she was just going to tune out everything but the feeling of Cas' lips on hers.

REDESIGN AND TIME PERIODS!

SirPentious died in - 1800 / Alastor - 1933 / Nifty - 1950s / Angel Dust - 1947

So I realized unless you told people who didn't know trough streams or wikis-they wouldn't know what time period the character is from! So here have some small stuff for redesigning here! Do research, you have no idea how fun it is to design with all the big references pulled up!!

The most obvious ones are Sir Pentious and Al.

Pen talks in an old way, not actually accurate, but you would get the point. +The Napoleon outfit by the end. +Steampunk is based on 1800-1900! Besides that, him calling the female character Miss/Missy or similar also part of it. Him imidiadlty saluting blabla

His suit doesn't match old suits and seems to be stylized the usual way all the others characters with Suits. (I know Pen wants to be hip with the kids but trowing away the idea of old clothes would be crazy to do) The entirety of the 1800s has different styles each decade too, we are focused on British late 1800s. There are fun variations of clothes too! (btw, in terms of redesign, search up for accuracy videos of people enjoy that style of clothing! Or steampunk!)

he colors can change and figures can always be exaggerated. Take this site I found while making this:

But he is Steampunk! Which is even more similar to the time period, and Pen pretty much gets a washed up version of Steampunk aesthetics. Many more fun outfits are there (for inventors too!)

Alastor is easy to tell more,' 'when' he is from. His specific way of speaking is also easy recognizable. +Radio theme.

The 30's were difficult in the USA, specially for the not 1%... to casual outfits and practical compared to years before, still stylish. + there is the place where you give attention to his Radio star and being mix person in those times affects his clothing!

Angel: He does not communicate nor 40's or Mafia (why put on those themes and not used them, I understand the idea of Angel being more modern or kicked out of his mafia family but common!) + remember the possibility of drag!

Nifty: She died in 50s (her old puddle skirt was PERFECT!) There are so many iconic Hairstyles from this decade too... She would still be a maid, but she still has a style. (I don't think you can tell when she is from, even in her acting, tho).

Hey all, I'm currently designing Zecora for the 1920s AU and have some considerations to go over.

I've decided to make her Swahili rather than Oromo, as suggested by her name being derived from an antiquated Afaan Oromoo word for "zebra." Reasons for this include: her hometown in the comics is coastal, so Kenya or Tanzania would fit better than Ethiopia geographically; I'm renaming her to Zahara, which is a real Swahili name. There unfortunately weren't any valid Oromo names starting with "Z," which I felt was important to keep; her connection to the Oromo People was already flimsy enough, so I felt it was safe to make the change.

I'm having some trouble figuring out how I'd want to design her clothes and hairstyle, however. As far as I know, there weren't many African immigrants in the US during the early 1900s, making research difficult.

If there are any African/East African/Swahili-speaking people who would be interested in advising, making suggestions, or helping me workshop, it would be much appreciated. You don't have to be an expert on 1920s culture and fashion. I'm just looking for guidance on redesigning a character who was originally very much a stereotype.
