Marina (Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid):

Marina is actually friends / dating the prince and has a lot of her own agency. She pretty spunky and silly, has friends, and like more of a reason to want to be human than a lot of other mermaids I've seen.

The Little Mermaid (Soviet Animation):

It’s a s story with the ending left with two interpretations- one of the fish and one of the humans. I think it’s really creative and also just immensely beautiful.

She is tender and tragic. She danced for the prince, even though it hurt a lot. She actually loves her sisters. When the prince fell in love with another woman, she was given a way out by her sisters: she could kill the prince by causing a storm. But she refused and basically sacrificed herself, turning into sea foam, just like in the original. Her character design resembles a fairy, so she actually looks like a creature from another reality, not a human.

An absolutely gorgeous take on the original story. The visuals are just so utterly captivating and I love the way the little mermaid is voiced as well. Just so well done.

Speaking of Do the Right Thing, here's some companion films to watch with it!

Uptight (1968) Dir. Jules Dassin ||A drama based on the novel The Informer, Uptight is a film set post-MLK assassination, focusing on a group of Black revolutionaries preparing for a race war and betrayal from within their ranks.|| Like Do the Right Thing, Uptight is about a cast of young Black folks struggling with the society they live in being built on white supremacy and how they navigate that, whether it be through resistance or assimilation. Basically, it is a mediation on Black American identity (Another movie I recommend watching with this one specifically is The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) dir. Ivan Dixon is based on a play by the same name that deals with the same themes through the POV of a Black former CIA agent)

Cornbread, Earl, and Me (1975) Dir. Joseph Manduke ||"High school basketball star Nathaniel "Cornbread" Hamilton (Keith Wilkes) is the pride of his urban neighborhood, and he appears destined for big things on the court and in the classroom. But a dare leads to a fatal misunderstanding when Nathaniel is shot dead by police who take him for someone who's just committed a violent crime. As police officers try to protect one of their own, members of the oppressed African-American community do what they must in order to find justice."|| This film is the one I feel has the most in common with Do the Right Thing, there are many parallels to be drawn from both Radio Raheem and Cornbread to the way cops are presented in both films. Both tell stories that are unfortunately prescient, a misunderstanding that a Black person pays for with their life is the sad reality of the society we live in. Each film also feels like a time capsule, which makes the reality that things haven't changed that much hit so much harder. Each film paints a sobering picture of Policing, race relations in America, and the demonization of Blackness.

Higher Learning (1995) Dir. John Singleton // A group of incoming freshmen at Columbus University -- including varsity athlete Malik Williams (Omar Epps), awkward outcast Remy (Michael Rapaport), and wide-eyed Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson) -- struggle to find themselves and adjust to newfound independence. When Remy finds acceptance among a group of neo-Nazis, tensions rise even higher on a campus already divided along racial, socio-economic, and gender lines.// John Singleton's Higher Learning pulls no punches when it comes to the depiction of the banality of evil and the alt-right pipeline years before we even knew how to define it. In the character of Remy, we see the effects of white supremacist dogma coupled with white male insecurity. Like Do the Right Thing, Higher Learning mainly focuses on race relations on and policing. I do think its view of misogyny and gender was extremely lacking and not nearly as fleshed out. (like spoiler alert the Black girl that dies in this barely was a character like she's not very well written at all) but this movie is still very much worth the watch for the discussion of race alone.

La Haine (1996) Dir. Mathieu Kassovitz ||When a young Arab is arrested and beaten unconscious by police, a riot erupts in the notoriously violent suburbs outside of Paris. Three of the victim's peers, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Said (Said Taghmaoui), and Hubert (Hubert Koundé), wander aimlessly about their home turf in the aftermath of the violence as they try to come to grips with their outrage over the brutal incident. After one of the men finds a police officer's discarded weapon, their night seems poised to take a bleak turn|| I first saw this movie during my freshman year of college and WHEW! It's best to go in with little knowledge on this one but just know it is a VERY hard watch. This black-and-white French film brilliantly tackles police brutality, racism, classism, and the frustrations of youth demonized by a white supremacist system.

Unlike many battlefield memoirs that focus on hardship and hardware, this is a work that addresses the culture of war, and of this war in particular, through the eyes of an intelligent innocent. My Review: It's not a bad book, it's just that the author probably waited too long to write it after the war was over. What you get is a very good primer on the vietnam war from the perspective of an infantryman. You learn what they carried, how they did things, and you also get some interesting stories of camraderie and what they experienced. You never really feel what the author experienced though. Whether it's entering the tunnels, or being in a firefight, you are given basic elements of who/what/where, but never much more. I should also mention that for many of the biggest fights, his unit was either a blocking element and not involved, or he was wounded early and missed much, or not many words are written about them.

If you've never read a book on this topic, it's a great way to learn the terminology and basic elements. From what a listening post is, to how a perimeter is set up, this book is great. There's just something missing, and you see it in how detailed and emotional his letters home are, compared to his writing on the topic now.

Ngày xưa (sau 1975), bài hát này bị coi là nhạc vàng, nhạc phản động, bị cấm hát. Nhưng bằng nhiều cách, bài hát vẫn cất lên, được nhiều người nghe và nhiều người yêu thích. Vì sự chân thật của đời sống tâm hồn lính chiến, vì giai điệu ngân lên vô cùng xót xa… Đó là “Rừng lá thấp” của nhạc sĩ Trần Thiện Thanh.

Người lính được nói tới trong ca khúc là lính Miền Nam. Tìm hiểu về sự ra đời của bài hát này, tôi được biết nhạc sĩ Trần Thiện Thanh sáng tác trong giai đoạn cao điểm của cuộc chiến tết Mậu Thân 1968. Bài hát là nỗi thương tiếc, sự vinh danh người bạn học và là người bạn thân của tác giả, đại úy Vũ Mạnh Hùng, đại đội trưởng đại đội 2 “Hậu Nghĩa” thuộc tiểu đoàn 3 TQLC, đã tử trận khi đang trấn thủ tại cầu Bình Lợi cửa ngõ Sài Gòn.

Hôm nay không còn hai bên chiến tuyến nữa, chúng ta có đủ thời gian nhìn lại lịch sử một cách khách quan hơn, để trả lại những giá trị đích thực cho một tác phẩm nghệ thuật. Tôi không coi bài hát này là ca khúc phản Cách mạng, tôi chỉ thấy đây là một bài ca tràn ngập lòng yêu thương con người, yêu đất nước và buồn xót xa vì đất nước phân ly, vì những thân phận con người không biết tương lai sẽ thế nào.

Nghe bài hát, tôi không muốn phân biệt người lính được nói tới trong nhạc của Trần Thiện Thanh là thuộc “phe” nào. Họ là người lính đang tham chiến với mục đích chung: “Đánh giặc lâu bền cho non nước bình yên”. Họ có một tâm hồn đẹp, và nhạc sĩ Trần Thiện Thanh đã viết về họ với những dòng nhạc ngợi ca, lời thơ trữ tình, biểu hiện những ước mơ nhân bản. Đời sống chiến trường được phản ánh trong bài hát với những chi tiết tả thực: “bùn lầy còn pha sắc áo xanh, khói súng xây thành – mắt quầng thâm mất ngủ, tàn đêm khói lửa”… Không một chút tô vẽ nào, đó hoàn toàn là hiện thực của cả hai phía: Những người lính đã hành quân trong lửa đạn và đã chết khắp nơi suốt miền Nam, nơi chân cầu Bình Lợi, trong đám lá lục bình sùi sụt bùn hôi, ở cửa ngõ Sài Gòn, đường đi Thủ Đức, Lái Thiêu… Và rừng lá thấp um tùm nơi ấy đã trở thành nơi nương náu cho những linh hồn…

Một thời gian rất dài, người ta né tránh những ca khúc phản ánh hiện thực như thế này, vì sợ nó sẽ làm lung lạc ý chí chiến đấu của con người. Đặt vào hoàn cảnh lịch sử khi ấy, có thể đúng. Nhưng chưa hẳn đã hoàn toàn đúng! Vì lúc đó, rất nhiều người trẻ tuổi vẫn nghe ca khúc này mà họ vẫn khoác áo lính lên đường. Và họ vẫn hát những bài họ thích. Họ vẫn yêu giọng hát cô ca sĩ mà họ mến mộ. Họ lớn lên trong chiến tranh, từ thuở ấu thơ đã quen nghe tiếng súng: “Nghe từ ngày thơ tiếng sú.ng triền miên” nên khi vào đời lính đã ngay lập tức hiểu rằng “mộng ước đầu tôi nghe đã chìm sâu” và “quen yêu gian khổ quân hành”. Thế mà họ vẫn chiến đấu với một tình yêu đất nước không thay đổi. Vậy thì tại sao lại phủ nhận họ? Phủ nhận lòng yêu nước của họ?

Bài ca có rất nhiều câu hỏi: “Sao không hát cho người đánh giặc trên cầu?… Sao không hát cho những người còn mải mê – Lá rừng che kín đường về phồn hoa?… Sao không hát cho những bà mẹ từng đêm ngóng con xa.. Hay hát cho những người vừa nằm xuống chiều qua?…” Những câu hỏi ấy vừa là lời tự vấn, vừa là câu hỏi dành cho tất cả mọi người: Hôm nay, ai nghĩ đến những người đã bỏ tuổi xanh nơi chiến trường? Ai xót thương những bà mẹ mất con? Hôm qua, lá rừng che kín đường về quê mẹ của những người lính xa nhà, và hôm nay, phải chăng những người còn sống đã mặc cho lá rừng phủ lấp quá khứ, phủ kín kí ức? Đoạn kết là những lời ca khắc khoải đến cháy lòng :

“Lời hát xin gây rung động thật sâu Đừng hát như chim giữa rừng lá sầu Xin thật lòng qua câu hát đầu môi Như lính giữa rừng yêu lá thấp mà thôi!”

“Xin thật lòng qua câu hát đầu môi”! Phải, bây giờ ta cần cái “thật lòng”ấy, để có cái nhìn đúng đắn về những gì thuộc về lịch sử. Giờ đây và chắc nhiều năm nữa, người yêu âm nhạc Việt Nam vẫn tiếp tục lắng nghe những bài hát như thế này về cuộc đời, về thân phận, về tình yêu trong chiến tranh. Hãy trân trọng tấm lòng ấy trong một ca khúc chất chứa nỗi buồn và tình yêu đất nước, con người thẳm sâu như thế – “Rừng lá thấp”!
