Young Marilyn
Becoming the Legend
James Haspiel
Smith Gryphon, London 1996, 168 pages, 22.86 x 29.53 cm, ISBN 978-1856851008
euro 60,00
This volume is a presentation of 150 rare photographs of Marilyn Monroe in her prime. Her friend, James Haspiel, acquired the originals over several decades and caringly preserved them. There are glamour shots, unpublished stills from her first screen auditions, "candids" by her fans, tests of costumes - some of them considered too revealing by the studio bosses for 1950s audiences, and many more photographs of her in private and in public, exclusive to this book. The book has an introduction by the author on Marilyn's early life and work, and the circumstances of each photograph is carefully detailed. James Haspiel is the author of "Marilyn: The Ultimate Look at the Legend".

Orange-crowned Warbler (Leiothlypis celata)
March 1, 2024
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Tinicum, Pennsylvania
This is usually a rare spring or fall migrant in my part of the country, and this particular bird should be wintering somewhere warm, like Mexico or Florida. Instead, it decided to spend the entire winter in this wildlife refuge next to Philadelphia International Airport. This was the second time I saw it, and there are many other records over the past few months. The orange crown is hidden, and is only visible when the bird is agitated.

I wonder how many arguments a week Lois "the truth at all costs" Lane and Clark "fabricates interviews with himself" Kent had about journalism and the inherent issue of being someone that uncovers the truth while purposefully deceiving people. About the ways that "truth, justice, and the American way" representative Superman violates the rules and ethics regarding evidence, hearsay, bias in the news, and anonymous sources.
Or how many times Clark has tried to get her to bury a story (a few times at least canonically), and Lois had to consider it because he told her the fate of the world relied on it, or that it maximized public good.
