I just re-watched an episode of The Bob Newhart Show where Bob finds out one of his patients* is gay when he brings the man into his therapy group.
Aside from some annoying little jokes (the guy puts a hand on Bob's shoulder and he's uncomfortable, etc.), the episode was surprisingly inoffensive.
The group decides that they don't want him in there and Bob tells them all not to come back to the group unless they can accept him.
The group eventually apologised and came back and accepted him. They handled it better than I would have expected.
If it hadn't been for the frequent little cheap jokes, it would have been pretty impressive for 1976. Frankly, I've seen worse in representations in 2000s shows.
