My Commentary: This A.M.V. showcases mostly Koushiro's Adoptee storyline, while also including brief scenes from 2020 eps that focused on Koushiro's inclusion or highlights. (There are a few tiny semi-spoilery segments from final battle of Digimon 2020 Episodes 66~67, but mainly show Koushiro.) There are no Tri, Kizuna, or The Beginning spoilers here. Extended Commentary: An A.M.V. I made in just under 2 hours, or, about an hour and 50 minutes total of editing, plus saving and review checks; as I aimed to finish just in time for: "Kou&Ten Day" a.k.a a "Koushiro & Tentomon Day" {Focus} (5/10, May 10) in the J.P.N fan base, the name comes from the "Kou" of Koushiro's J.P.N name, {Kou = Go = "Five" (5)} as pronounced in J.P.N + "Ten", a nickname for "Tentomon" partially given by Mrs. Izumi during "02" ("Tento-san") Koushiro fans often share Koushiro works on this day, including platonic works.

This particular work, specifically for Koushiro x Taichi, includes a Queer focus lens as the original song did. (Please be respectful if interacting on this work!)

Just a Digimon Adventure 2020 Post about The TaiShiro Moments

I love how Taichi and Koushiro are both shown to think highly of the other. Taichi even brags about how smart koushiro is sometimes, its so wholesome.

Everytime the group gets separated, the first person Taichi tries to call is almost always Koushiro.

and in the first episode Koushiro meets up with the rest of the group in the digital world, Taichi's face immediately lights up.

Like if anything happens ever, Koushiro usually addresses Taichi right away. Between Him and Tentomon, both are the ones checking in on Koushiro and making sure he's doing okay.

Specific moments from episode 36:

"but there's only 20 minutes left"

"that's more than enough"

"we won't know unless we try right?" Taichi believing in his ability.

"but--"

"there's no time left, lets go"

"alright, I'll support you!"

Then

"Let's go, koushiro!"

"R-Right!"

Then

Koushiro, you have to do this!"

"me!? No way! I can support you, but I can't--"

"koushiro"

"I leave it to you."

"Taichi-san..."

"I'm counting on you."

*kou hesitates*

AND THEN KOUSHIRO THINKING ABOUT HOW HE HAS ATLURKABUTERIMON, AND THEN SPECIFICALLY THINKS BACK TO WHAT TAICHI SAID TO HIM IN EPISODE 3 BEFORE THINKING OF EVERYONE ELSE TOO-

It was also just great to see Koushiro feeling good about his own ability- especially with this music at the end, damn.

episode 43 was funny.

They call eachother like, every episode to see how it's going.

Episode 59

So when they get that trial wrong, Taichi is taken, and [digimon] says he's gonna undergo surgery to become a digimon.

Taichi just smiles and says "Nah don't worry about me guys, I leave the rest to you Koushiro."

Then Koushiro blames himself for whats gonna happen to taichi.

And whiole all this is going on, we know taichi is worried about how the other is handling it right now, since he's under a lot of stress.

Bro koushiro looked so sad.

and then tentomon always believes in koushiro, always. which is exactly what he needs

SO THE ENGLISH DUB JUST CAME OUT A FEW DAYS AGO AND IVE WATCHED (at least the episode with TaiShiro moments) SOME OF IT AND I HAVE MORE THINGS TO SAY

So let’s start from the top once again

(Dub)

Episode 1’s script for the most part is unchanged :)

However, there is the changes to the names.

While in the original Tai was just ‘Tai’, this time his full name is Taichi, and Tai is just a nickname. His last name though has still been changed to Kamiya instead of Yagami.

Koushiro actually does keep his Japanese name in the English dub! But this time ‘Izzy’ is also just a nickname. Of course, he retains his last name ‘Izumi’ like he did in the original English dub.

ANYWAY ANYWAY

one of my favourite bits from episode 1, is when Koushiro is showing Taichi his timeline, and Taichi goes something like:

“Well..I’m really bad at that stuff. You’re awesome, Koushiro!”

And Kou seems surprised and caught off guard by the complement, before quickly turning his attention back to his tablet in embarrassment and saying:

“Y-You can just call me Izzy—!”

And we know later in the dub, that Koushiro prefers being alone, which also suggests he doesn’t have many friends, or doesn’t go out of his way to make any. He doesn’t really like being around people. So we can guess that before Taichi, the only people that call him Izzy are his parents.

So Koushiro giving Taichi express permission to call him Izzy, especially for Koushiro, is something special and significant, even if Taichi doesn’t know this.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Ep 14 Reaction

Hey!  I’ve got a great idea!  Let’s address the issue adjacent to Koushiro’s actual issue!  THE KIDS WILL LOVE IT!

(I’m joking, this was a cute ep, but as always...)

Hahahaha, oh man!  I am dying!  This was such a fun episode, and I don’t really wanna throw shade at all, but ultimately...  I think it fell a little flat by not quite addressing the concern I’d most want to hash out with wee baby 10-year-old Kou-chan.

But first!  Some notes!

IKKAKUMON IS  THE ABSOLUTE CUTEST SWEETHEART, I am literally here for Gomamon and Tentomon in the reboot.  The humans?  Sure, whatever.  GIVE ME GOMAMON.

And I’m dying over Yamato and Gabumon.  At first, I thought they really were scouting ahead a bit, although walking about two yards ahead doesn’t... help much (presumably, Ikkakumon can see father out because he’s tall).  And then, in the end, when Jyou finally fell asleep and shut up...  THEN Yamato hopped onto Ikkakumon!

I can’t even blame him, lol!  I’ve never wanted to smack Jyou upside the head before, but his, “Hahaha, you don’t know what scouting means?  WELL, as the oLdEsT, I will tell you!”  Shut up, dude.  I’mma smack!  Smack!  BAD SENPAI!

And I absolutely died at Togemon’s “COCONUT COUNTER!”  And, “HEY, COME ON!” (or something like that) in English.

AND LET’S TALK ABOUT TENTOMON.  Okay, so Ten-chan?  He’s, like...  He’s like???  A weird, supportive, loving... Osakan... uncle???  Which is to say that he’s like Tentomon, I guess, but I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.  He’s getting the pulp beaten out of him and he’s 100% concerned about little Kou-chan’s sense of helplessness without his tablet.  I love his energy and weirdness and kindness and...  Just how much active attention he pays to Koushiro, all packed into a visually horrifying giant buggo.  Absolutely wonderful.

But.

I dunno, this kinda reminds me of Saikai?  Where I understood Taichi’s hesitation and concern about fighting in Tokyo from his first fight with Kuwagamon near Fuji Station...  And then Saikai flashbacks to stills of the broken cell phone and streets like twelve times, and you consider making a drinking game of it, but decide that you want to live.

Panning to Koushiro looking at his tablet fifty times and having a helpless look was overkill, is what I’m saying.  Like...  I shouldn’t get bored/impatient with the setup while waiting for the payoff.  I’ll give the Reboot more slack with this, because it’s aimed at children, whereas Tri was supposedly aimed at adults, but...  Kids are smart, dude.

And I think the biggest sticking point is that...  I absolutely want Kou-chan to know that he can think and act without the tablet.  But what I really want to know is...  Why is his self worth 100% pinned on how helpful he is to others?  Like, this problem feels like step 0.5 in a fifty step program towards self confidence, lol!  But hey, there’s plenty of episodes left!  

I’m trying to think- I’m at that point where I’ve written so much Koushiro fanfics that I’m having trouble remembering what was canon...  Have we ever truly dove into Koushiro’s self esteem issues?  We’ve seen him blossom as the others come to trust and turn to him, explicitly starting with Taichi at the gate in Vamdemon’s castle.  By 02, he’s the resident exposition man/original Chosen guru for the new kiddos.  By Tri, he has his own fancy ass office and is making distortion goggles and a digital safe room for the digis.  By Kizuna, he has his own company...

But does anyone ever tell him that he doesn’t have to stay up for three days straight, trying to help everyone alone in his office?  Does anyone tell him that they’re worried about him?  Like, I know Jyou comes by and cleans up and tells him to sleep, and Taichi has a single, “Don’t push so hard” line in the fourth film, but like...

I really, really want to see someone tell Koushiro, canonically, that they’d love him even if he couldn’t reason his way out of a paper bag.

Like, I’ve always admired and pointed out that Koushiro is so helpful, always, that he will always try to help if he’s just approached with basic respect- and often, he’s already working on something.  I really love this about him!  I just...  Want someone to say, “Hey dude, I’m glad you’re here!  You’re awesome because of [thing that isn’t Koushiro using his intelligence to be helpful].”

Instead, I’m getting, “Hey, you’re helpful even without the computer!  Good job!”  And clearly, this boosted Reboot Kou’s confidence, which I love!  It’s a step in the right direction, and I shouldn’t even be complaining!  This is literally one of those, “This isn’t exactly what I wanted to see, but objectively there is nothing wrong with it and it was good.”  Ie, Hidden is being a baby!

But next time, Ten-chan, Taichi, instead of “You’re always helpful,” can’t we just say, “You’re always loved?”  I know for a fact that they both love him already in the Reboot, especially Ten-chan.

BUT!  Baby steps!  There is so much series left!  And in the meantime, FANFIC!

AND EVERYONE, YOU MATTER JUST FOR BEING YOU, NOT BECAUSE OF STUFF YOU CAN DO/HOW HELPFUL YOU CAN BE!  I LOVE YOU!  OKAY BYE!

Digimon Adventure 2020, episode 8 reaction (and over-analysis)

This week, a full-episode action scene, some introductions and character dynamics. If this is how an average episode will be, I’m fine with it.

Was Yamato this cool last time around? Back in OG Adventure, he always seemed more “perceived as cool” than actually cool. He was too much of an anxious mess to qualify. Maybe it’s because Takeru isn’t around this time, or because he already has a solid relationship with Gabumon, but 2020 Yamato is a lot more confident. Besides, he’s capable of holding onto a gigantic wolf doing several cartwheels without feeling the slightest bit dizzy. Cool. Taichi and Sora agree, and so should you.

This wasn’t Yamato’s introduction but it certainly felt like it played the same role for his character as the previous two did for Mimi and Jou: establish it and immediately get some minor character development rolling. His arc was a fair bit more standard than the other two but they got it out of the way fast enough that I enjoyed it instead of finding it annoying like I normally would. It helps that literally everyone saw through it and was willing to work with it. One of the things I like about Koushiro’s arc in the original series was how it, for the most part, completely refused to go for the most melodramatic option, and that seems to be the case for Yamato at least in this new series. Even that brief “friendship” sequence is a lot more restrained that it could have been.

Anyway, we got Yamato. He’s cool, very cool. He cares a lot, but refuses to show it. He tries to distance himself as much as possible from the others but fails, and he’s glad to have failed by the end. He’s dumbfounded to have received help. Good start for his character arc.

Gabumon didn’t have much to him (unlike Gomamon or Tentomon, even Palmon considering she has the butler routine), but we did get more confirmation that he and Agumon know each other from somewhere. He’s also the one who explains the situation to Taichi’s group, so perhaps he’s Yamato’s voice whenever the boy doesn’t feel comfortable speaking. We’ll see.

I guess I should also talk about the fight, since that was the main focus of the episode. It achieved the best thing it could have: it made sure everyone had a role and a time to shine. Yamato was the obvious star, up to and including throwing his cloak at the Solarmon to stop their attacks, but Taichi and Sora weren’t much behind, gaining points with how comfortable they were in a supporting position. Gomamon and to a lesser degree Palmon had some good non-battle contributions, which makes them feel like more complete characters than Piyomon and Agumon. The final “friendship boost” against Gorimon was well done.

Anyway, other observations:

We’ve settled on roles for the main cast (minus Yamato): Taichi leads at every point, Sora seconds him and is pretty observant herself, Mimi does “girly” stuff in the background that is played as completely charming rather than annoying, and Jou has the normal reactions people would have, but over-the-top. As far as the digimon go, Agumon and Piyomon do whatever their partners do, but Palmon is always trying to help Mimi or Jou and Gomamon flipflops between being worried about Jou and playfully teasing him.

Taichi was, as ever in this series, pretty much the perfect leader for the group, taking lead whenever needed, knowing when to defer to Yamato’s experience, making sure Jou didn’t feel ashamed of his surrender attempt, perfectly okay with playing a supporting role. He thrives in combat situation, even his fear when faced with Gorimon being forgotted quickly. He’s, as admitted by Tomioka, clearly inspired by V-Tamer Taichi (not in particular skills but in how competent and confident he is), which does make me worry that, much like in V-Tamer, he won’t have much of a character arc here. In the meantime, he‘s pretty good, but let’s see where it’ll lead.

It might just be me overthinking it, but Sora seemed noticeably more worried than the others when the situation in Tokyo was mentioned. I have a feeling she’s not going to deal with the eventual pressure well.

Not much Koushiro, other than him making more exposition and trying to not make Jou feel inadequate (and failing).

The humor with Jou wasn’t to my liking, but it does help that it all comes from reactions and decisions that, while certainly over-the-top, are rooted in understandable insecurities and fears. So, bad humor, good characterization.

Mimi's precious as ever, and she and Jou are established as the “normal” ones of the group. Well, not everyone can be an ultimate badass, or Koushiro.

Gabumon’s attack wasn’t capable of overpowering the Tankmon’s missiles, but it was capable of overheating them and causing them to explode. This repeats itself with the Gorimon, making him the first digimon to have been killed since the first 3 episodes.

That howl was awful. Sorry, no if or buts about it.

Before I forget: Mimi and Yamato talked. Not indirectly, they actually directly addressed each other. And just like that, Mimato is infinitely more plausible here than in OG Adventure.

Not that I think it’ll happen. If anything, Sora’s introduction to him was a bit too significant-seeming to me. Boy looked shook from it.

Next episode, Koushiro finally joins, Ogremon is back, and we get our first Perfect-level. What are the odds that MetalTyranomon is the same one who just got shoved out of a cliff?

Koushiro Izumi is NOT a “background chara” (that can be easily dismissed or ‘left out’ of the ensemble cast), I don’t know who needs to hear that...!! (And regardless of Koushiro’s own role usages / screen-time; it’s STILL Important.) Koushiro will ALWAYS be important as representation of non-normative families no matter what Toei may choose to SHOW (or BELIEVE...)

{I might finish this for this month, but we’ll see.} (This song genuinely means a lot to me anyhow; I am making it out of genuine appreciation for this {+canon} chara; and as this is just a pre-view, I hope it can be respected.)
