The sea breeze carried whispers of opportunity as I strolled through Anvil’s bustling streets. Days earlier, I had sold nearly all I carried—old weapons, trinkets from ruined towers, even a few relics whose stories had ended. Every contract, every coin saved found purpose in one sum: five thousand septims. Not a fortune won by heroics, but by perseverance and the patient labor of service.

Amid the market’s clamor, a hushed conversation caught my attention—a manor for sale at a suspiciously low price. Intrigued, I made my way to The Count’s Arms, where I found Velwyn Benirus nursing a drink.

“Interested in property?” he asked, eyes darting nervously. “Benirus Manor is available for 5,000 septims. A steal, really.”

The price was tempting, and the prospect of a home in Anvil alluring. I handed over the gold, receiving a deed and a key in return.

That evening, I stepped into my new abode. Dust-laden air greeted me, and the creaking floorboards echoed my footsteps. The manor bore the weight of neglect, its grandeur faded. Seeking rest, I ascended to the bedroom and settled into the aged bed.

Sleep was fleeting.

A chilling wail pierced the night, jolting me awake. Translucent apparitions emerged, their mournful eyes locked onto mine. Instinctively, I reached for Faith’s Edge, its silver gleam slicing through the spectral forms. The battle subsided, but unease lingered.

Descending to the main hall, I discovered a shattered vase beside a skeletal hand and a tattered diary page. The fragment spoke of a secret chamber, accessible only by a Benirus heir. Velwyn’s hasty departure now made sense.

Determined to confront him, I learned from locals that he’d fled to the Imperial City. After days of travel along the Gold Road, I found him at The King and Queen Tavern. Confronted with the evidence, his facade crumbled.

“My grandfather, Lorgren, dabbled in necromancy,” he confessed. “His experiments cursed the manor. I thought selling it would rid me of the burden.”

With persuasion, he agreed to return and help lift the curse.

Back in Anvil, we ventured into the manor’s depths. Velwyn revealed a hidden passage, leading to a sealed chamber. As he activated the mechanism, a surge of energy erupted, and he fled, leaving me alone.

Within, I faced the tormented spirit of Lorgren Benirus. His voice echoed, pleading for redemption. Yet, as I approached, his true intent surfaced. The lich emerged, malevolence incarnate.

Our clash was fierce. Faith’s Edge met dark magic, each strike a testament to resolve. Finally, with a decisive blow, Lorgren’s form dissipated, the curse lifting.

Sunlight now filters through clean windows, and warmth returns to the halls. Benirus Manor stands renewed—a sanctuary reclaimed.

In confronting the past, we pave the way for a brighter future.

Lore: The Netherese in 1492 DR

Disclaimer Game Version: All these analyses were written up to the game version v4.1.104.3536 (Early access). As long as new content is added, and as long as I have free time for that, I will try to keep updating this information. Written in June 2021. Detail: BG3 takes place in 1492 DR.

To understand what's the context around "Netherese magic" and, let's hope, its nature, I think it's of vital importance to know a bit about Netheril and what happened in recent years.

The game does a good job in showing us what happened with their fall at Karsus' hands. I explained in the post of "Well-known Characters" a good amount of information about him. His desire for godhood was a bit more complex than just wanting to be a god, even though the game shows it as blind arrogance and ambition: so far we know, it was Mystra who commanded her priests to spread this version of Karsus' Folly, as if he only wanted power alone. 

After Karsus' folly, all the floating cities of Netheril fell to the ground, destroying their population with them. However, only three cities were saved since they were too high in the air: their fall gave enough time for Mystra to be reborn in minutes and saved them. A fourth enclave, ruled by Telamont Tanthul—also called Lord Shadow—was teleported to the Shadow Plane (now called Shadowfell) days before the catastrophe. This was possible because Shadow Lord had been experimenting with the Shadow plane energies for a while. When he returned to Faerûn to see the aftermath of Karsus' folly, he recognised the need to stay in the other plane and gather strength to rebuild Netheril. After 1700 years, he started his plan for the return of his Civilisation in 1372 DR.

This is the context in which the trilogy of The Return of the Archwizards is set. This also belongs to 4e, which is one of the concepts that have annoyed more players, since this return made the Shadovars the Big Bad Evil everywhere. Maybe WotC wants to clean this aspect in the game. Maybe not. We don't know for sure. But we may suspect that Netherese people are returning in BG3: many details ingame keep giving context about them: Gale's explanation about Karsus' Folly, Excavation of the Enclave of Nhalloth (book), The Approachable East: Vol5 (book), and then the presence of Netherese magic not only in Gale's "orb" but in the tadpoles. 

I think it's worth checking the ingame book called “Excavation of the Enclave of Nhalloth”. Nhalloth was a Netherese city floating above the Sea of Fallen Stars in Faerûn. After Karsus' folly, it sank into the sea, claiming for some underwater creatures. As a consequence of the Spellplague, the geography changed, the waters lowered, and allowed a bit of exploration. Little was found, and explorers reported odd feelings and ghosts around it.

What do we know about the Return of Netheril in 1372?

These new Netherese people started to spread their influence in Faerûn, looking for Netherese old artefacts and spying on people and places that could possibly hinder their ultimate goal of creating a new Netheril in their image. But, were these people truly Netherese? The question comes from the fact that living creatures can't stay in the Plane of Shadow (currently merged with the Plane of negative energy which transformed it into the Shadowfell) without being affected by it. So, in an attempt to be short but still provide important facts I will numerate vital details of them that may become handy in BG3:

This floating city used to be called Thultanthar, and after its return, it's more commonly referred as the City of Shade.

Somehow, the Netherese people survived, and became more united and secretive.

Over 1700 years, each generation of these netherese people become more and more attuned to the shadow plane, some of them even turning into Shades: twisted, dark, humanoid creatures with longer lifespan than humans. Lord Shadow was still the main ruler of the City of Shade because he is now a Shade.

A big percentage of their population are worshippers of Shar.

The archwizards (ruling class) in the highest ranks are called Shadovars. Not every Netherese or Shade person is a Shadovar. Despite this, most folk refer to all Netherese as Shadovar nonetheless.

Most Shadovars are followers of Shar.

Shadovars are masters of Shadow Magic. It's a common mistake to think that Shadow magic is the same as Shadow Weave magic. Shadow Magic is magic using the energies of the Plane of Shadow. This can be done using Weave or Shadow Weave. Since most shadow casters are evil-aligned, Shar tried to offer them the Shadow Weave as a means to cast their magic without using the Weave (an element of a neutral-good aligned deity). This is related to the effect of worshipping without consent: Using the Weave is always a way to worship Mystra even if the caster wants it or not. This always gives power to Mystra. Shar created the Shadow Weave as a way to divert all those evil-aligned casters into her own worshipping. More details in the post of "Mystra and her Chosen ones"

With the return of the Shadovars, they tried to corrupt the recently recovered Weave and turn it into Shadow Weave. 

In 1487DR, Lord Shadow tried to gain the power of the Mythal of Myth Drannor, but Elminster killed him and the City of Shade fell upon Myth Drannor, destroying both cities.

However, this was not the end of the Shadovar. We may have some information about how they are in 1490s DR (let's remember BG3 is during 1492 DR):

Lord Shadow may be part of the Weave now (I have no idea why Ed said this. Lord Shadow was not a Chosen of Mystra, why would he be a weaveghost now?)

Two of his daughters and a Netherese arcanist survived: The sisters Lelavdra and Manarlume and the arcanist Gwelt have been calling themselves "The Three".

The Three have been collecting Netherese and others loyal to the Shade Empire from the ruins of the Citadel of the Raven in the western Moonsea region since late 1487 DR. They had collected at least 60 low level arcanists and 20 low born Netherese within a short period of time.

Gwelt was leading the hunt for others calling their group "The Court of the Three."

Their goals were supposedly to collect other Netherese, make allies, identify foes, take command of the remaining floating Netherese cities, and find a remote location to regroup and plan their re-emergence. It is unknown how far they have come.

Why all of this may be important?

Because part of this canon material may or may not be part of the story of BG3.

It's true that Larian has already changed some very consistent canon facts, such as the spell of the Hag eye (Ethel justifies her spell as a very personal customised one) or—the most impressive change—the Ceremorphosis process: Gale explains that the normal process removes the personality of the person in the sixth day after the infection, when in Forgotten Realms canon it should happen few hours after the infection. So my expectations for them to follow all canon material are not blind. They will change canon concepts as they think suitable, which is how DnD works. Still yet, it seems reasonable to read about all this in order to have a better context of what we will see, since the canon context is undeniably there.

Personally I always saw the presence of Netherese/Shadow Magic in the tadpoles as the intervention of Shar, but I never could find a group of mortals who would do that work and have such specific knowledge. We know that, with the exception of Mystra, contact with mortals is forbidden to all gods; therefore, Shar could not be the one to have approached these Mind Flayers. Now, the presence of the Court of the Three, working alongside or co-opting The Three Dead's plan seems a more reasonable possibility for me.

So far, what we know is that 

Shadow Magic is equivalent to Netherese Magic ( EA,  Ethel's words)

Shadow Magic is magic related to the plane of Shadows. This plane was altered by Shar when she merged the negative energy plane with it, causing the Shadowfell. The Shadowfell was Shar's realm for a while.

Shar was a great loser in the last edition. She could not change the Weave into Shadow Weave and become the greatest deity of magic as she planned. So she may want to counter-attack now.

Shadovars—who tried to help Shar in turning her into the Goddess of Magic—are masters of Shadow Magic and Shadow Weave magic.

The Shadow Weave was not destroyed, it's recovering at a similar pace to the Weave. 

The tadpole can't turn the host into a mind flayer because Netherese magic (the dream person) attached to it works as a stasis process. ( EA)

The Netherese magic—aka dream person—seems to restrain the Mind Flayer transformation while having strong connotations of Bhaalspawn essence. ( EA)

These small details may suggest that maybe the Shadovar are returning, or the three dead are using Shadovar's knowledge or vice versa. The possibilities are many and it seems hard to decide which ones are more likely since EA gives little information for such estimation.

The Smiths

The biggest reason for young hybrids to aspire to attend Cassell College was to find their soulmate, the person who was like them, both in pedigree and in riches.  Before classes start, the men have checked out the ladies and the ladies have checked out the men. Identifying the highest ranked students in class narrowed down the candidates, with the highest ranking male students coming out of the 3E being the prized stallions with the lowest rankings hoping to find something in the scraps left behind.

The Smith sisters were no different. Not only with spotless pedigrees, they had hefty bank accounts. In their early twenties, they were already accomplished business women, each one running their own real estate business, but not in housing, but in farmland. Each one of these women owned hundreds of acres where they grew maize which they traded to great success on the commodities market. To them, some rich city boy would likely not understand the importance of their business, thinking farming was a humble dirty practice. But the women, especially Celeste, understood that women like them were the ones who filled their rich bellies at night. 

Now they had come out as Rank A and were fortunately seated next to the Rank S of the class on day one. Of course, they were going to plant their flags immediately next to him. But if the poor leftover stallions of Cassell College thought that they were going to hopefully go after two other sisters as scraps, they were sadly mistaken. There were no ‘scraps’ among the Smith Sisters.

“There! That’s the last of it!” Porsche slapped her hands together as she finished moving the last of three boxes that held Tigre’s meager belongings into his new room. He’d been living in the hospital for so long, but now his one bedroom was larger than even that. It was a spacious open plan with large windows and its own bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. Their dorm was located on the top floor of the newest dormitory building on campus. 

At the first floor was the lobby and recreation area that included its own indoor pool and sauna, huge exercise room with state of the art equipment and a small theater to watch movies. There were arcades full of video game cabinets, ping pong and pool tables, and air hockey machines. There was even a salon and massage parlor. The building sat on a biking and walking trail and was quite near the library.

Porsche sat next to him on the king-size bed and handed him his tablet. “This is the college class registration portal where you choose your classes for the year. You have advanced classes because of your rank where you get the best teachers on any subject so pick whatever you like. First, you have to decide on your major.” She looked up at him with big bright brown eyes.

Tigre felt his heart suddenly skip a beat looking into those eyes, their delicately curling lashes, the rise and fall of her cheekbones. Her skin was perfect, smooth, and even. A rich shade of mahogany. “Major?”

“The direction of your study. You can’t just study everything. You have to pick a specific subject to pursue. You can change it later, but… it will just take you that much longer to graduate.”

Her fingers were topped with French manicures as she swept down to the Majors list. “Pick one.”

There were majors in Theology, Engineering, Chemistry, Alchemy… Tigre sighed. He didn’t know what many of these meant. “Is there one that has to do with fighting?”

He just remembered his vision had a lot of depictions of war. That was what dragons were known for and that’s what he wanted to be, a warrior, like a dragon.

“Fighting? So… you want to major in Martial Arts?” Porsche pulled her face into different surprised expressions. “Alright then. These will be your classes.” She tapped her finger on the screen. 

“Taijiquan, Physical Education, Kendo, Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jujistu, Muy Tai…” She listed them off.

He didn’t know what any of these meant! “Yeah.” He said. “Sign me up for those.”

She laughed once. “You can’t take them all at once. They limit Phys Ed to four per year, so you can have energy for your core classes and not hurt yourself. So pick four.”

He had questions about each one but he figured it wouldn’t matter. He just picked the first four off the list. 

“Okay then you have Battlefield training level 1 that all Cassell students have to attend here…” She ticked that off. “And then there’s your core classes. Right here.”

“Core Classes?” He asked, shocked. This was really adding up!

She looked at him reproachfully. “You can’t just join Cassell and be a meathead. You’ll be taking Norse Mythology 101, Dragon Lineages 101, and Alchemy 101.” She made a few more taps of her fingers and suddenly his schedule was lined up neatly in blocks of time on a calendar. “You’re kind of spacy so we’ll need to set some reminders.” 

She now took the tablet completely out of his hands.

“Spacy?”

“It means you don’t keep track of things well.” She didn’t look up from the tablet. “You have to be reminded or you won’t do what you need to do or you’ll get overwhelmed and forget.” 

“That’s true…” He admitted softly. After all, Toyama had to remind him to brush his teeth. How was he going to keep up with all of this?

She rewarded him with a smile. “Wisdom is with the modest!”

“Porsche…? What’s your major?” He asked her in a meek tone.

“I’m going into Dragon Physiology.” She said easily.

“Fizzy… ology…?”

“I study Dragon bodies.” She hands him back the tablet. “Okay, we’ll be going once we all change.”

“Where are we going?” He looks down at the tablet but she’d set the lock screen back on.

“Shopping, you need clothes and,” She stood up and paused to look him up and down “...a lot more stuff for classes and going out et cetera. Plus, we’re having a party tonight to celebrate our win.”

“We are?” Tigre said, amazed. 

“Yep. We are.” Porsche sighed, wearily. “Ahhh… it’s so tiring, to be having to help you like this. So don’t make things difficult. We’re doing you a favor to help you out so you don’t get lost. Be sure to clean up after yourself and do what we ask alright?”

“Oh, of course! I really appreciate your help!” Tigre nodded earnestly.

She gave him an approving nod. “Good. I’ll be back in a bit.”

A grown man sharing a dorm with three rich single women would raise anyone’s eyebrows, but Tigre walked out of the building with them, not having much of a choice. The girls stepped into a sun that flashed off their ebony skin and crystalline handbags, in midriff baring blouses with low shoulders and jean shorts cut above their thighs. “You have a very hefty stipend but you’ve never touched money before so I’ll hold on to it for you.” Celeste says taking his Student ID card from him. “I’ll make sure you have everything you need.”

“Oh… okay. Thank you!” Tigre nodded.

Ruby glanced over and frowned. “It’s still his money…”

“He’s just going to waste it on something stupid because he doesn’t know what he needs.” Celeste shrugged. “You know how it is with people who get a lot of money after never having any. We, on the other hand, actually know what to do with it.”

A sleek dark blue Miata was parked in front of the building and they opened the door and got in.

“You do know about seatbelts right?” Porsche smiled as she got into the passenger side. 

Before Tigre could answer, he was startled when the whole roof of the car started folding back! Ruby giggled behind her hand. Tigre returned her smile.

“If there’s something you want just ask for it.” Ruby said.

The engine roared to life and the three of them took off, weaving through the shining spires of Chicago. The sweet tones of R&B music played on the radio and Tigre stared upwards up the skyscrapers. The three girls put on dark glasses against the sunlight, their hair blowing in the wind. 

They pulled up to a red light and idled. 

“Hey girls! Got any room for me?” A voice shouted from the corner of the street. A man in a basketball jersey whistled from a jeep.

The girls paid him no mind.

“Oh come on, don’t be that way!”

The three girls all looked at each other in unison and then the light turned green and the car sped off. 

“Does this happen a lot?” Tigre glanced behind him.

“All the time, honey. Get used to it.” Porsche lowered her glasses at him. “ You’re the luckiest guy in the world. Look at where you are. You’re in a car full of cute girls on a bright late summer day! What do you think is going to happen? Everyone wants to be you right now.”

“Don’t give him a big head.” Celeste rested her arm on the steering wheel. “I like him the way he is. Too many guys out there just think they’re entitled to our attention. We’re the ones who choose who we want. Has nothing to do with ‘luck’. We’re all the ‘luck’ he needs.” She looked into the rear view mirror. “You just sit back and relax and don’t mind the peanut gallery.”

They pulled into an upscale mall and walked in empty handed and walked out carrying three multicolored and multi sized bags on each arm. When they got back to the dorm, they started decorating with balloons and banners and bright lights. Bottles of alcohol were lined up on a minibar and glasses were arranged on the table.

These girls didn’t cook, they ordered food from the cafeteria to have it catered.

Ruby leaned over and turned up the heavy bass music and clapped her hands dancing in the middle of the living room. She grinned at Tigre  and invited him to dance with her. He had no idea what to do but she encouraged him to  ‘move to the beat’.

“By the way. Clubs. We’re joining Lionheart.” Celeste suddenly announced from the kitchen.

Tigre stopped mid-groove, hands awkwardly in the air. “We are?”

“Yeah, the people in Student Union are all uppity idiots that need to be taken down a peg. Senior Lu Mingfei is nice enough, but god, the people around him? Gag me. They’re entrenched in their stupid Euro-centric views and have no idea how the world works. But we have the other Rank S. And that’s gonna burn ‘em good.” Celeste crossed her arms. “That means we’ll be able to rise up the ranks pretty quick. It’s a sure win. There’s not enough people in Lionheart who can compete with us.”

She rolled her eyes at Tigre's stunned expression. “I’ll spell it out for you. You saw that fool, Robert. He walked right up to you as assumed you were going to want to lead Lionheart, all the while ignoring the triple threat sitting right in front of him. You’re not the one who is going to lead Lionheart. We are!”

Sure enough, a few hours later, the dorm was full of Lionheart members.

Ep 70: A Daughter’s Hope

Smo, Feugis: 10-11th Feast 3E Y628 (558)

Previously, as the Bronze Scales seek Vesper’s mother, Halos, they finally arrive outside the docks of Smo, the Efreeti City next to the burning sea in the plane of fire. As they approach, a vision cold and dark comes, revealing the Sphinx of Black Mask, who has found Tasha. A blast of deathly energy breaks from the sky, dissolving the vision as Vesper’s heart stops to see the spirits of the dead watching her, steeling her confidence.

Deciding to push onward into Smo, the Scales meet with Coyote, a strange contact of Rhaj, in a sports bar outside an arena. They learned of where Halos might be, a Profane House and Manor to a celestial master. The Scales made their way there before having Amsen as an insect sneak past a peacock in the garden and into the manor, finding Halos in a temple to the celestial master, cleaning it. Signalling to her, she found an excuse to leave where the Scales came out of the sphere to meet her, Vesper and Halos embracing.

But the Erinyes body guard was suspicious and broke down the door before Ellory finished her teleportation circle. Amsen slowed her down enough with an iron door conjured from his patch, allowing the Scales to escape as the tall celestial of porcelain and gold hair revealed herself.

We come Back to the Story here...After falling through the circle, distant thunder rumbles as you are shot through space, cool mist on wind sprays your faces before you come to a sudden stop, falling upon the stone floor of the teleportation foyer beneath Norbell Tower.

What We Protect ~ Chapter 2 ~

Most people have a backstory. Most people have secrets, something to hide. Whilst some of those may be small things that a person feels uncomfortable sharing with their everyday world, others can be more drastic. Dangerous. A risk to everything you’ve ever loved. What would happen if these secrets were to be revealed to the world? Who would they hurt? What if they were only trying to protect those close to them? Of course, one would never know unless they come clean, but it could be too late to realise that more damage had been done than good. As much as I wished that the secrets I keep to myself were small inconvenient ones, the events that had occurred over the course of my life just never seem to want to give me a break.

Some people may not have anything to hide, but everyone has something to protect.

The next morning starts out the same way as any other. Waking up, dragging Jun out of bed on what seems like my fifth attempt, eating our breakfast together and then heading out for the day. When we reached the school, I suddenly remembered about last night and how Jun claimed not to know who Yuri is. Figuring it just slipped his mind, or he just forgot her name but would recognise her face, I left it and decided to deal with it when we saw Taehyung again.

Standing next to a young girl further ahead, was the familiar face I had gotten acquainted with yesterday, and I brought Jun over with me for introductions.

“Morning!” I smiled as we came to a stop in front of the two.

“Ah, Y/n, good morning! Nice to see you again,” he returned the smile before averting his gaze to Jun, “and this must be the almost birthday boy” he greeted, kneeling down to his height. I watched as him and Jun shook hands and turned my attention to the quiet girl gripping onto Taehyung’s other hand.

“Hi sweetie,” I grinned, “you must be Yuri. I’m Jun’s mum, Y/n. It’s lovely to meet you.” I introduced myself. She waved back and shyly smiled, moving to hide behind her dad. I had to contain myself from squealing at her cuteness.

Taehyung stood back up and I figured now was the best time to ask him.

“Hey, you did say Yuri’s in class 3F right?” I questioned.

Before he could reply, a quiet voice answered for him.

“I’m in class 3E, dad how can you get it wrong again?” she complained, narrowing her eyes as she looked up at him.

He sheepishly smiled and apologised, “Sorry baby, you know I can get confused sometimes.”

“See, I told you I wasn’t imagining things!” I claimed, gently swinging Jun’s arm.

He simply rolled his eyes, “But still, she isn’t in my class” he retorted.

The day of the party came around quick and I had just finished with the last of the decorations as the doorbell rang and the first influx of loud kids arrived. Jun ran straight past me and opened the front door, despite my shouting at him to never answer the door. But anyone on this side of the door could hear that it was excited children from the shouting that had already started. Boy, would I be in for a hectic day.

An hour later, the house was full of Jun’s classmates and their loud screaming and shouting radiated their excited and sugar fuelled energies. Some of them were inside, stuffing more sweets in their mouth when they thought an adult wasn’t looking, and the other half were playing outside on the bouncy castle. Feeling satisfied with the running of everything, I made my way back to the kitchen after having refilled the drinks stand.

“You really went all out for him, he must be having the time of his life!” another parent, Jisoo, beamed.

I smiled at her and answered, “Yeah I felt kinda bad that his party wasn’t all great last year. We’d just moved here, and he hadn’t started school yet, so he didn’t have any friends to celebrate with.” I guiltily recalled.  

Insisting that I wouldn’t be able to handle all the children by myself, Jisoo, Naeun and Suho offered to stay and help during the day after arriving with their own kids. I felt relieved that they stayed because I knew that if I was the only adult here, I would end up going crazy. When one of us wasn’t running in the garden to make sure nobody wasn’t falling out of the bouncy castle, we were all sitting around the kitchen island, just talking.

At first, I did feel out of place, to a certain extent, given that I was the youngest parent there and still in a graduate job whilst the others had at least 2 children and were practically middle aged. Any fears I had about the conversations revolving around things like work, bills or school soon flew out of the window as we soon immersed ourselves in topics surrounding what our own teenage years were like, and how fast the children were growing up.

“No way, I can’t believe you used to be in a band! I just can’t imagine you going wild in front of a crowd, you seem so…office like” Naeun laughed, after hearing Suho’s story about his best childhood accomplishment.

“I totally agree” Jisoo added, taking a sip of her coffee.

“Should I be offended?” he feigned hurt, placing his hand over his heart.

“I’m sure, you know, they mean well? Even though I’m not sure what office-like even means?” I asked more than reassured him, laughing along with the two other girls.

“Not you too, Y/n. Look – you guys just haven’t heard me sing yet.” He hastily placed his coffee mug down on the island and rubbed his hands together.

“Brace yourselves, ladies” Jisoo joked as Suho began clearing his throat. Just as he was about to open his mouth, the doorbell rang. I jumped out of my seat and quickly made my way to the door, giggling as Suho let out a groan of annoyance and muttered, “One day, I’ll prove you wrong.”

I opened the front door and was greeted with the faces I’d secretly been anticipating showing up for the past twenty minutes.

“Yuri! Taehyung! You guys made it, come in” I happily greeted as they made their way through the door.

“Sorry we’re a little late, Yuri took forever deciding what to wear.” Tae claimed, taking off his coat. I looked at Yuri’s outfit and gave her a smile of approval.

“Well, she made the right choice, she definitely has an eye for fashion.” I admitted, admiring her style.

“Yeah, she gets it from her dad” Taehyung boasted.

“I’m sure she does,” I rolled my eyes and teased. Yuri began taking off her shoes, but I stopped her. “Hey, you can keep your shoes on and go straight into the garden to the bouncy castle!” I quickly told her.

“Bouncy castle?!”

And with that, she took off running towards the sound of children shouting in the garden. I gestured Taehyung towards the kitchen and we started to make our way there, following the trail of a very excited Yuri.

“So, you gave into the bouncy castle then?” his amused voice asked.

I chuckled and replied, “Yeah, I couldn’t resist it. I’m way too much of a soft parent.” I admitted as we stepped into the kitchen. We were met with stares from the other three who stopped mid argue about Suho’s singing talents. I was confused at their sudden silence before I remembered that they probably hadn’t met Taehyung yet.

Before the awkward silence could continue, I quickly spoke. “Guys, this is Taehyung. Taehyung, meet Jisoo, Naeun and Suho. Taehyung just moved here with his daughter, Yuri, who now goes to the same school as our kids.” I explained, moving out of the way slightly to let them get a better view of him.

“Nice to meet you all” Taehyung greeted.

“Take a seat, I’ll make you some coffee” I offered, and pulled out the chair I was previously sitting down on.

“Thanks” he quietly muttered and smiled at me, before filling the empty spot next to Suho.

As I moved to boil the kettle again, I could see both Naeun and Jisoo staring at me from the corner of me eye, so I met their gaze and glared at them as they both began wiggling their eyebrows behind their mugs. I should have expected something like this as they had been constantly on my case about reopening my love life. Any man they see me talking to, they insist I date. It seems that half the time, they forget that the only men I come into contact with these days are married fathers! But that doesn’t stop them though, they’ve even gone as far as setting me up on a blind date with another single parent, who I found out through his obsession with talking about his ex-wife, that we weren’t compatible. At all. Man was it awkward whenever we had the misfortune of crossing paths at the school.

A little while later, we had fed all the kids who were yet again excited about having Pizza for dinner. Then the time came for cutting the cake, and I had to stop myself from crying in front of everyone as I watched Jun blow out his candles. Once the children had clapped and cheered to their hearts content, Jun declared it time to open his gifts.

Sitting in a circle, the children began handing their gifts one by one with the assistance of Naeun, whilst Jisoo and Suho took duty of handing out cake slices to everyone. As I sat next to Jun, collecting the rubbish from the wrapping paper, I looked around to see that Taehyung wasn’t anywhere in the room.

TAEHYUNG’S POV

I was leaning against the door frame of the small living room that had just about managed to fit everyone in. The atmosphere in the house was an inviting one, anybody could tell the children had let the excitement from playing games and eating junk food all day go straight to their heads as they cheered and hugged the birthday boy when he was opening his presents. All focus was on Jun, nobody seemed distracted in the slightest so I took this as my opportunity to slip away.

Making my way back towards the direction of the kitchen, I quietly closed the door behind me and let the sounds of music and cheering become muffled. Quickly switching to alert mode, I made my way over to the island where Y/n’s laptop was sitting. I had seen it here earlier and was itching to get my hands on it, but I had to wait until nobody was around. Now I had the perfect chance and was desperate to find any ounce of information that I was looking for.

I turned the laptop on and saw it was locked with a password. Of course, there’s a password. What was I expecting? There was literally nothing I could think of to try and put in, because I didn’t know anything about Y/n. I was growing anxious by the second and became increasingly aware of the fact that somebody could just walk through the kitchen door any second and catch me snooping.

My hands became sweaty and I kept wiping them on my jeans, I was becoming nervous and paranoid. I knew I wasn’t cut out for this kind of thing and if I had any other choice, I wouldn’t be in this situation right now. I was close to a nervous breakdown when the sound of one of the children screaming, “Happy birthday Jun!” came through the door and it hit me

I typed in todays date, feeling like it was the only chance I had at guessing the password and sighed with relief as it worked and unlocked the laptop. Shaking my head, I focused on what was in front of me and narrowed my eyes on what I found. Y/n had left open a page full of apartment listings in a different city, it seemed you were planning on moving to a new house.

Shit, this is bad.

I glanced up at the other tabs open and saw they were all the same, some of them were emails to agents, expressing your interest in some properties.

Fuck, this is really bad. If she leaves, I’ll be at risk. I won’t have a job. Shit. I can’t keep an eye on her. I-I’ll be in trouble. Big trouble.

Hit with more nerve-wracking anxiety, I shakily pulled out my phone and snapped pictures of the places and areas you were looking at, making sure to get the addresses. If anything would help at this point, it would be knowing where you’re planning to go. I was cut short taking the photos as soon as I heard your voice trailing towards the kitchen, and dropped my phone fearing I would get caught.

I quickly pulled down the lid of the laptop and moved down behind the island to pick my phone up off the floor.

Y/N’S POV

I excused myself from the room to go and get my present to give to Jun and weaved my way through the children. Walking towards the kitchen, I was confused to see the door closed.

“Why is this closed?” I muttered to myself, opening it and peering inside. I wasn’t expecting to see anybody in here, but I spotted a tall figure in the corner peering through the cupboards.

“Everything okay, Taehyung?” I asked, eyebrows raised. I fully stepped into the kitchen now, keeping the door wide open. He quickly whipped his head around, eyes wide and hang gripping his chest.

“Shit, Y/n, you scared me” he gasped. “I was just looking for a glass.” He said, moving away from the cabinets.

“Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you,” I said, immediately feeling bad. “But, you’re not going to find any glasses in the cereal cupboard.” I walked over to the opposite side of the room and pulled out what he was looking for, noticing that his eyes were closely following me. “What would you like to drink?” I asked, opening the fridge.

“J-just water please.” He shakily said, moving to sit down on one of the stools. I nodded my head and poured the cold water in the glass and handed it to him.

“Damn, you must be easily scared. You’re practically shaking.” I said, feeling worried.

He quickly downed the water. And took a deep breath. “Yeah, sorry I’ve always been easily scared.” He admitted.

“No need to apologise,” I warmly smiled. “Come on, we’re just about to finish opening the presents.” I said, remembering why I came in here in the first place. Opening the pantry door, I retrieved the hidden present and turned back around to see that Taehyung had already left the kitchen to go back inside. I blinked in surprise at the empty kitchen and shrugged my shoulders, thinking he was just excited about opening presents. I was about to leave the kitchen when I noticed my laptop was slightly open on the counter.

Weird. I could have sworn I kept it closed earlier.

I made my way over to shut it properly and then back to the room to give my baby his birthday gift.

If only I had known the real reason behind why Taehyung was so shaky.

The 3 Ps Assessment: Parties, Political Interest Groups, and PACs

1a. Republican: Restrictions on energy is taking thousands of jobs and hurting the American economy. We nee to use our own oil, “clean coal”, natural gas, solar, geothermal, and nuclear energy to relieve our dependence on Middle east oil.

Democrat: America should be running on clean energy by the mid-centry. American states are already seeing an increase in hurricanes, droughts, and flooding. The need for clean energy means there’s a need for new jobs to work for clean energy companies instead of big oil.

Libertarian: Governments shouldn’t be subsidizing any form of energy and they have a terrible track record with the environment, so they aren’t responsible for it. We shouldn’t trust governments with out environment and energy resources.

Green: Climate change is the largest threat facing America and the world today. They want to cut 95% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. They want to encourage and create clean energy jobs. They want a strong international climate treaty. They want an economic policy for a safer climate treaty. They want clean agriculture.

Peace and freedom:They believe that socialism is necessary to end the destructiveness of capitalism on our environment. They want to out-law unsustainable practices such as clear cutting and fracking. They want free public transportation, and to eliminate nuclear power plants. They want to restore the damage in our air and water systems. They also want to end environmental racism.

1b. Republican: I agree that we need to relieve our dependence on oil from the Middle East, but we don’t have the same reserves as them. We don’t have enough oil in the U.S to support how much we use. We need to be relieving dependence on all oil, natural gas, and coal. And focus on solar energy.

Democrat: I agree with almost everything the democratic party said about climate change. But their predictions aren’t realistic. Scientists say we’re not doing nearly enough to keep “global temperature increases to “well below” two degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”(as agreed in the Paris agreement). To do this we need to lower our meat consumption greatly, but it doesn’t state that as ways we can lower our CO2 and methane emissions.

Libertarian:I agree the the government has a bad tech record with the environment, but in dire times the government should take control and restrict certain things to ensure public safety and health for generations to come.

Green: I agree with all of the libertarians points. I don’t know that they’re reachable, but they do include the effects of animal agriculture. they want to encourage less meat consumption, and promote organic and local food production and distribution.

Peace and freedom: I agree with everything that peace and freedom says. Sadly, this is the only way we can really stop climate change, and ensure life on earth for the human race.

1c. I agreed most with the Peace and Freedom’s platform. This doesn’t surprise me too much because although they're views are extreme, we need an extreme and radical change to combat climate change.

There’s the “West Contra Costa monthly group meeting” on November 3 in Berkely.

4. Both the Sierra Club and the CEJA seemed pretty organized, but the Sierra club had more opportunities to get involved and just generally more to explore on their site. The sierra Club seems more successful, partially because they have more ways to get involved on their website. The Sierra Club targets people around the nation that are concerned about the environment and want to get involved, while the CEJA is geared toward Californian’s who are concerned about the environment. The CEJA seemed to project more concern for the health of low-income areas, and people of color that are often not represented in environmental justice, and are at the highest health risks because of where they live and the amount of money the have (environmental racism). The CEJA’s supporters include APEN (Asian Pacific Environmental Network), CBE (Communities for a better Environment), CCAEJ ( Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice), and CAUSE ( Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy).

The wind here never sleeps. It runs through the temple’s high arches like a restless spirit, cold and clean and full of weight. I woke before sunrise and could not return to sleep, so I walked alone along the upper walls, wrapped in my cloak and silence.

Below, the valley still slumbered, steeped in mist. The Blades were already stirring, men and women shaped by discipline, sharpened by duty. They do not pray aloud.
