En 2010, Wafaa Bilal, artiste d’origine iranienne, s’implante de manière chirurgicale une caméra à l’arrière de la tête. Son projet, 3rdi, met en avant cette réalité dans laquelle nous sommes constamment surveillés. La caméra implantée dans la tête de Wafaa prend des photos toutes les minutes durant toute la journée et ce pendant une année. De cette manière, l’artiste iranien prend des images en toute neutralité. Les photos ne sont pas le fruit d’une réflexion comme dans le processus de photographie classique. Les images étaient lors de toute la durée du projet mises en direct sur un site créé à cet effet. Toutes les photos sont d’ailleurs toujours disponibles sur son site.

Je trouve que ce projet est une bonne critique de notre société actuelle et de la manière dont nous sommes constamment filmés et photographiés sans notre consentement, dans notre dos. Le suivi en direct de ces photos prisent automatiquement sans que que les mains de l’artiste soient littéralement derrière est également une manière unique et originale de contempler et d’apprécier une œuvre d’art.

My work to date has been concerned with the communication of public and private information to an audience so that it may be retold, distributed. The stories I tell are political dramas, which unfold through my past experience and into the present where they interact with the currency of media as the dialectic of aesthetic pleasure and pain. Through various layers of distribution and interpretation, pictures are drawn using interactive models established through the stories’ (technological) framework where they are revealed and shared. With an audience locked in participation, my story may be retold. The 3rdi is just such a platform for the telling and retelling of another story. A camera temporarily implanted on the back of my head, it spontaneously and objectively captures the images – one per minute – that make up my daily life, and transmits them to a website for public consumption.

Our own weakness would dismay us, but God’s strength is offered to us; in His light we see, and in His strength we work. We have duties to perform, difficulties to encounter, and foes to overcome; let us therefore go in the strength of the Lord.

It is promised to us, and may be received by us; we must ask it of God, we must expect it in faith, and go forth believing that He is faithful who hath promised. Never let us attempt any thing in our own strength; if we do, we shall be sure to fail; let us first take up God’s promise, rely on His veracity, and so go forth to duty, conflict, and danger. Then the battle is not ours, but the Lord’s; then we are sure of success, succour, and victory.

The Lord will then be our strength and song; our refuge and certain salvation. His strength is made perfect in weakness, and His grace is glorified in the unworthy.
