After a gruelling six months, we're pleased to finally announce to you this year's winners of the 2024 Kirby OC Tournament!
We'll start with the results from the Second Chance Brackets. This event was hosted to allow those who were voted out within the first three rounds of the mainline tournament to participate for a little longer, and featured high-speed 3VS match-ups.
The grand final of the Second Chance Brackets pitted Noir Fontaine (of @desultory-novice), the long-suffering swordsman, against Rope MF (of @mint-termsandconditions), that one guy who really really likes ropes. Both contestants produced an incredible, ongoing series of finale propagandas bouncing off the strengths of both characters, combining both lore and comedy, comics, and even animations!
Their poll, ✦ THERE ARE NO STRINGS ON ME ✦ concluded with one singular vote of difference. This polled in favour of:
⭒THERE ARE NO STRINGS ON ME⭒ ✦ FINAL RESULTS ✦
Tumblr media
WINNER: Rope MF with 50.3% of votes!
Congratulations to Rope MF!! This was an incredibly tight race until the very end, with Noir claiming a lead for multiple updates right up until the last moment, with a surprise victory for Rope MF!
Moving on to the Mainline Tournament. After six months of intense 1 on 1 competition, our grand finalists emerged as Valfrey (of @gethoce), the butterfly samurai who created suns at the beginning of the universe, and starstruck dee (of @starflungwaddledee), a palmful of waddle dee who is definitely very normal.
Despite their differences of vibe, both characters are beloved by the community, within the tournament and out, and their creators have told consistent tales throughout the course of the event. Valfrey in particular has spent her time doing everyone a great service by handling one specific menace, a story that carried through into her propaganda until the very end, while starstruck found herself rather lost en route.
None the less, as we don't technically require contestants to be on the tournament grounds to compete, their poll ✦ FOR THE SUN ✦ ran as normal! The results are:
⭒FOR THE SUN⭒ ✦ FINAL RESULTS ✦
Tumblr media
WINNER: starstruck dee with 54% of votes!
For this poll in particular, we have an additional graph to show the full week of movement!
Tumblr media
Despite a slow start, starstruck dee pulled into a tie, and then into a lead that she maintained up until voting closed. Congratulations starstruck dee!! Propaganda and campaigning made an incredibly noticeable impact on this poll, with every post from each competitor and their supporters resulting in an instant uptick of attention for their character on the poll!
Congratulations to the winners, and also to their opponents. To be among the final four of a roster that was just shy of 150 characters is an incredible achievement!
Our final wrap-up for the tournament and this blog will be posted within the next week or so.
Once again, congratulations to our competitors, and thank you to all-- contestants and spectators alike-- for participating this year! This tournament could not exist without your love of OCs, and we are thrilled to have been able to host you, your characters, and all the creativity and passion that has come with them!

Fruit Jam RP2350B credit-card mini computer with all the fixin's 🍓🍇💾
We were catching up on a recent Hackaday hackchat with Eben Upton (https://hackaday.io/event/202122-raspberry-pi-hack-chat-with-eben-upton) and learned some fun facts: such as the DVI hack for the RP2040 was inspired by a device called the IchigoJam (https://www.hackster.io/news/ichigojam-combines-strawberry-and-raspberry-to-deliver-a-raspberry-pi-pico-powered-educational-micro-66aa5d2f6eec). We remember reading about this back when it was an LPC1114, now it uses an RP2040. Well, we're wrapping up the Metro RP2350 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6003), and lately, we've been joking around that with DVI output and USB Host support via bit-banged PIO, you could sorta build a little stand-alone computer. Well, one pear-green-tea-fueled-afternoon later we tried our hand at designing a 'credit card sized' computer - that's 3.375" x 2.125", about the same size as a business card (https://hackaday.com/2024/05/07/the-2024-business-card-challenge-starts-now/) and turns out there's even a standard named for it: ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 (https://www.iso.org/standard/70483.html).
Anyhow, with the extra pins of the QFN-80 RP2350B, we're able to jam a ridonkulous amount of hardware into this shape: RP2350B dual 150MHz Cortex M33 w/ PicoProbe debug port, 16 MB Flash + 8 MB PSRAM, USB type C for bootloading/USB client, Micro SD card with SPI or SDIO, DVI output on the HSTX port, I2S stereo headphone + mono speaker via the TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/tlv320dac3100irhbt/2353656), 2-port USB type A hub for both keyboard and mouse or game controllers, chunky on-off switch, Stemma QT I2C + Stemma classic JST 3-pin, EYESPI for TFT displays, 5x NeoPixels, 3x tactile switches, and a 16-pin socket header with 10 A/D GPIO + 5V/3V/GND power pins. The PSRAM will help when we want to do things like run emulations that we need to store in fast RAM access, and it will also let us use the main SRAM as the DVI video buffer.
When we get the PCBs back and assembled, what should we try running on this hardware? We're pretty sure it can run DOOM. Should that be first? :) We also need a name. Right now, we're just calling it Fruit Jam since it's inspired by the IchigoJam project.

USB RTC for Raspberry Pi: The Best Way to Enhance Your Raspberry Pi's Time Accuracy
Tumblr media
When it comes to building real-time applications with the Raspberry Pi, one of the most crucial components to ensure is timekeeping. A RTC (Real Time Clock) module provides the Raspberry Pi with a reliable source of time, even when the system is powered off. For those looking to achieve incredibly accurate timekeeping, a USB RTC for Raspberry Pi is a solution that combines the DS3231 RTC chip with a MCP2221 USB to I2C/UART converter is a perfect match.
In this blog post, we'll dive deep into what makes this USB RTC setup an ideal choice for your Raspberry Pi projects, and how it enhances accuracy, reliability, and ease of use.
What is USB RTC?
RTC is a device which is used for maintaining accurate time in the host’s system processor. With the Raspberry Pi, the internal clock relies on the system supply to track the accurate time and the main issue is when the Raspberry Pi is powered off, the clock resets. USB RTC is a solution for providing accurate timekeeping even when the Raspberry Pi is turned off or disconnected from the network. This setup allows users to easily add accurate timekeeping to their Raspberry Pi without using the GPIO pins.
The USB RTC is a device which comes with a strongly integrated DS3231 circuit that is used to consume less power and has an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. It has MCP2221, a USB-to-UART/I2C serial converter that provides USB connectivity, used in Raspberry Pi operations that contain USB, UART(Serial), GPIO, and I2C interfaces. This module can be used with Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux or any other operating system.
Key Features & Specifications:
DS3231 RTC Circuit: The DS3231 provides a highly stable timekeeping function and includes a built-in temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), which helps maintain accuracy across a wide temperature range.
Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO): This is a critical feature of the DS3231. TCXO compensates for temperature variations that could affect timekeeping accuracy. This ensures the RTC module performs well in a range of environments without the need for external temperature sensors.
Battery Backup (CR1220, 3V): The module uses a CR1220 coin-cell battery to maintain time even when the Raspberry Pi is powered off. This ensures your system's time is preserved even in the event of power failure or system reboot.
16-pin, 300-mil SO Package: The module comes in a compact and durable 16-pin, 300-mil SO (Small Outline) package. This size makes it easy to integrate into your projects.
Automated Backup Power Supply: The onboard battery backup power supply ensures your RTC chip continues to run and track time even when the Raspberry Pi is turned off or disconnected from power.
Fast 400kHz I2C Interface: The RTC communicates with the Raspberry Pi using a 400kHz I2C interface, allowing fast and efficient data transfer. This is crucial for time-sensitive applications, as it minimizes any lag or delay when reading the time or setting the RTC.
MCP2221 USB to I2C/UART Converter: The MCP2221 is a USB-to-I2C and UART converter that makes it easy to connect the RTC to the Raspberry Pi via a USB port. This eliminates the need for GPIO pins, making it a plug-and-play solution for Raspberry Pi users.
USB 2.0 Compatibility: The module uses USB 2.0 for a fast and stable connection to the Raspberry Pi, offering plug-and-play functionality without requiring complicated wiring or software configuration.
Plug-and-play: The device is plug-and-play, with available drivers for various operating systems, including Linux, ensuring smooth integration with the Raspberry Pi.
High Accuracy: ±2ppm from 0°C to +40°C: Offers incredible timekeeping accuracy of ±2ppm (parts per million) between 0°C and +40°C. This means that, in a typical environment, the RTC will deviate by no more than 2 seconds per day—a level of precision ideal for most hobbyist and professional projects.
Extended Accuracy Range: ±3.5ppm from -40°C to +85°C: In more extreme conditions, such as outdoor or industrial applications, this module maintains an accuracy of ±3.5ppm in the temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Whether you're working in a chilly warehouse or a hot outdoor environment, this module ensures your Raspberry Pi’s timekeeping remains precise.
Versatile Timekeeping: The module doesn’t just count seconds and minutes; it also tracks days, dates, months, and even the year with leap year compensation valid until the year 2100. This makes it perfect for long-term projects, as you can rely on the RTC to keep accurate time for many years to come.
Two Time-of-Day Alarms: With two independently programmable time-of-day alarms, this RTC module allows you to set scheduled events. Whether you need to trigger an action, send a notification, or turn on/off a device at specific times, the alarms make it easy to synchronize with your Raspberry Pi’s actions.
Programmable Square-Wave Output: The square-wave output feature allows you to generate periodic signals that can be used to sync other devices. Especially useful in projects that require precise timing for communications or measurements.
Use Cases:
Data logging: For applications like weather stations or scientific experiments, you need precise timestamps for each data point.
Embedded systems: For embedded systems that require time-based tasks (like alarms or scheduled events), the RTC ensures that the system runs on a stable, reliable time.
Low-power applications: The RTC ensures your Raspberry Pi can operate in low-power or battery-operated setups while maintaining the correct time.
IoT devices: When building IoT applications where devices may not always have a constant internet connection, having a local, accurate time source is essential.
Conclusion:
For projects that demand extremely accurate timekeeping, the combination of the DS3231 RTC chip and the MCP2221 USB to I2C/UART converter is an excellent solution. This setup not only provides highly accurate, temperature-compensated time tracking but also integrates seamlessly with the Raspberry Pi via a fast I2C interface.
Whether you're building a weather station, data logger, or any time-sensitive project, the DS3231 with MCP2221 ensures that your Raspberry Pi has reliable, battery-backed, and accurate timekeeping capabilities that won't be affected by power outages or system restarts.

R11°+ at 7 a.m. on my table – breakfast about 7 then paying and settling accounts till 8 ¼ - saw our host before being off at 8 50/.. – he gave us a letter last night for his father-in-law, the commandant at Vladicawkas, and shewed us the cards of 2 Englishmen who had claimed his services (as he spoke French) sometime (years?) ago at V- a Mr. Moore and a Mr. Kirwan of Dungin (or some such name) Park – he thought Mr. Moore was colonel – no! said I, or he would certainly have put it on his card – he gave me at my request my card to which I added my address “Shibden hall Yorkshire” and at Mr. Jernikofskis’ request I wrote on a sheet of paper “Madame Lister de Shibden hall Yorkshire” in French to avoid the mistress at full length for which our colonel asked; but I told him we always write it Mrs. in English – the other being used for maîtresse d’école ou de quelque chose – pas comme il faut – we have really been very comfortable chez notre bon lieutenant colonel – magré l’absence de sa femme, who he said had taken away the key of a principal drawer containing our excellent telescope etc. etc. and he said we should have had things better had she been home – we had everything we wanted – we had a wild goose for dinner yesterday = ./80 not at all fishy tasting but wildish and good – off at 8 50/.. with a pleasing remembrance of Kisliar [Kizljar] – said I should take especial care of the Kabarda bow our host gave me last night – amazing the dexterity with which the Kabardians use this weapon – they literally transfix a hare or any such small animal and pin her to the ground – 3 horses to each kibitka – but got on very well – at the 1st ferry (and paid ./80 as before for the 2 ferries) at 9 23/.. – some minutes in whipping the horses into the right place on the boat, and then over in 3 minutes – George’s kibitka came afterwards – En route again at 9 38/.. – at 2nd ferry at 10 5/.. – much cattle and carts laden with hay and pipes (big barrels about the size of our port wine pipes) of Vodki (brandy) – several distilleries 2 or 3 at least close to Kisliar [Kizljar] – the reason the road to the town now makes such a great round, is that the Terek 2 or 3 years overflowed all the low ground direct to the town, and ruined a great deal of vineyard ground close up to the wooden gate by which we went out to the vineyards we saw (the one on Friday night en route to the government vineyards less than ½ way) – which ground still lies waste – had to wait a little – over in 2 or 3 minutes at 10 16/.. and back at the station  (Sukoborozdinskaia) at 10 40/..and off again at 11 5/..  A- queer this morning  as always nowadays ssince Astracan or before   she mumps one half and cries the other half her time   I cannot stand it  think of getting off to visit Vere  going to Dorpat  writing on Russia  taking Joseph Booth and Oddy  or perhaps ssomeone from Dopart  Mrs. Briggs to be left at Shibden  how thankful I shall be to be well rid of A- ‘tis from Kisliar [Kizljar] on the steppes of Russia that I think so seriously of it

Upgrades while vacant (discussion)
I'm in Massachusetts, have a 3 unit apartment I've been renting for about 6 years. Obviously impacted by COVID19 and have just blocked my calendar until June.
I've been doing some small upgrades here and there and was wondering if any other hosts have been doing the same.
One of the things I did includes hardwiring a 3v power supply to my August Smart Lock Key Pad (changing 2 AAA regularly has always annoyed me).

Pentingnya Mengetahui Kontrol Sisi Pada Sirkuit Listrik

What is the Difference Between VPS and Dedicated Server Hosting?
Introduction
When it comes to hosting websites or applications, businesses and individuals face a crucial decision: choosing the right type of hosting that meets their needs in terms of performance, security, and cost. Among the most popular options are Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting and Dedicated Server hosting. This article aims to provide a comprehensive comparison of VPS and Dedicated Server hosting, discussing their features, advantages, and use cases to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding VPS Hosting
Definition and Architecture
A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtualized server that mimics a dedicated server environment within a shared hosting environment. The key technology behind VPS is virtualization, which uses a hypervisor to divide a physical server into multiple virtual servers. Each VPS operates independently, with its own operating system, resources, and isolated file system.
Features of VPS Hosting
Isolation and Security: Despite being on a shared physical server, each VPS instance is isolated from others, providing a secure environment. This isolation ensures that the actions of one VPS do not affect the performance or security of others.
Resource Allocation: VPS hosting allocates specific amounts of CPU, RAM, and storage to each VPS instance. These resources are dedicated to the VPS, ensuring consistent performance.
Customization and Control: Users have root access to their VPS, allowing them to install and configure software and settings as needed. This level of control is akin to having a dedicated server.
Scalability: VPS hosting offers flexibility in scaling resources. Users can easily upgrade or downgrade their resource allocation based on their needs without significant downtime.
Cost-Effectiveness: VPS hosting is generally more affordable than dedicated hosting, making it an attractive option for small to medium-sized businesses and developers.
Use Cases for VPS Hosting
Small to Medium-Sized Businesses (SMBs): Businesses that require reliable hosting with dedicated resources but cannot justify the cost of a dedicated server.
Developers and Programmers: Ideal for testing environments, development projects, and hosting applications that need specific configurations.
E-Commerce Websites: Online stores that need a balance of performance, security, and cost-efficiency.
Growing Websites: Websites experiencing increased traffic that outgrow shared hosting plans but do not yet require the power of a dedicated server.
Understanding Dedicated Server Hosting
Definition and Architecture
A Dedicated Server is a physical server exclusively rented by a single client. Unlike VPS hosting, where multiple users share the same physical hardware, a dedicated server provides full access to all of the server's resources. This setup eliminates the need for a hypervisor, allowing direct hardware access.
Features of Dedicated Server Hosting
Exclusive Resource Use: All the server's CPU, RAM, storage, and bandwidth are exclusively available to the client, providing maximum performance and reliability.
Enhanced Performance: Dedicated servers can handle high-traffic websites and resource-intensive applications due to their powerful hardware and dedicated resources.
Customization and Control: Clients have complete control over the server's hardware and software configuration. This includes choosing the operating system, hardware components, and installing custom software.
Security and Compliance: Dedicated servers offer higher security levels, making them suitable for industries requiring strict compliance with data protection regulations. Clients can implement advanced security measures tailored to their needs.
Reliability and Stability: With no other users on the server, dedicated hosting provides consistent performance without the risk of resource contention.
Use Cases for Dedicated Server Hosting
Large Enterprises: Companies with substantial online presence, requiring robust performance and high security.
High-Traffic Websites: Websites with significant daily traffic, such as news portals, social media platforms, and popular blogs.
Resource-Intensive Applications: Applications that demand extensive computational power, storage, and memory, such as gaming servers, data analytics, and large databases.
Compliance-Sensitive Businesses: Organizations in finance, healthcare, and other sectors with strict regulatory requirements for data handling and security.
Key Differences Between VPS and Dedicated Server Hosting
Performance and Resources
VPS Hosting: Provides allocated resources within a shared environment. Performance is generally good but can be affected by the physical server's overall load.
Dedicated Hosting: Offers exclusive access to the entire server's resources, ensuring maximum performance and stability.
Cost
VPS Hosting: More affordable due to shared physical hardware. Ideal for smaller budgets.
Dedicated Hosting: Higher cost reflects the exclusive use of physical hardware. Suitable for larger budgets and businesses needing top performance.
Scalability
VPS Hosting: Easily scalable by upgrading resources within the virtual environment. Ideal for growing businesses.
Dedicated Hosting: Scaling can be more complex and costly, often requiring physical upgrades or migration to a new server.
Control and Customization
VPS Hosting: Offers significant control with root access, but some limitations due to shared physical resources.
Dedicated Hosting: Provides complete control over hardware and software configurations, with no restrictions.
Security
VPS Hosting: Isolated environment provides good security, but shared physical server can introduce risks.
Dedicated Hosting: Higher security due to exclusive use of hardware, with the ability to implement advanced security measures.
Reliability and Stability
VPS Hosting: Generally reliable, but performance can fluctuate based on the physical server's load.
Dedicated Hosting: Offers unmatched reliability with no risk of performance being impacted by other users.
Choosing Between VPS and Dedicated Server Hosting
Assessing Your Needs
When choosing between VPS and Dedicated Server hosting, consider the following factors:
Budget: Determine how much you are willing to spend on hosting. VPS is cost-effective, while dedicated hosting offers premium performance at a higher cost.
Resource Requirements: Evaluate your website or application's resource needs, including CPU, RAM, storage, and bandwidth. High-demand applications may require dedicated hosting.
Traffic Volume: Consider your current and projected traffic. High-traffic websites benefit from the stability and performance of dedicated servers.
Security and Compliance: Assess the level of security required for your data. Industries with strict compliance standards may need the enhanced security of dedicated hosting.
Scalability: Plan for future growth. VPS hosting offers flexible scalability, while dedicated hosting may require more planning and investment for scaling.
Technical Expertise: Determine your ability to manage and configure the server. VPS hosting is easier to manage, while dedicated hosting offers greater control but may require advanced technical skills.
Practical Scenarios
Small Business Launching an E-Commerce Site: A VPS can provide a cost-effective solution with sufficient resources and security to start and grow.
Established Enterprise with High Traffic: A dedicated server ensures consistent performance, security, and control over the hosting environment.
Growing Blog with Increasing Traffic: Starting with a VPS allows scalability without high initial costs. Transitioning to a dedicated server can be considered as traffic continues to grow.
Developer Testing and Staging Environment: A VPS offers an isolated environment to test and develop applications without the overhead of a dedicated server.
Conclusion
Choosing between VPS and Dedicated Server hosting involves understanding the unique features and benefits of each. VPS hosting offers a balanced solution with good performance, scalability, and affordability, making it ideal for small to medium-sized businesses and developers. In contrast, Dedicated Server hosting provides unparalleled performance, control, and security, suitable for large enterprises, high-traffic websites, and resource-intensive applications.
Carefully assessing your needs, budget, and future growth plans will help you determine the best hosting option for your specific requirements. Whether you choose VPS or Dedicated Server hosting, both options provide robust solutions to ensure your website or application runs smoothly and efficiently.

Interval Transfer Bandwidth Retries CWND IPerf under linux (in a VM) shows some minor losses, but Server B is under active usage (1-10 MBit/s), so Congestion might occur. IPerf under Windows show nothing special. I've realized the issues as I was trying to copy a 200gb disk-file from one host to another - what resulted in a drop to 0 MBits/sec copy speed, which sometimes recovers, sometimes the operation is being interrupted.
