Happy Saturday Fandom :) Zero Chenford in this one but good separate SL’s for them both. Really good growth for Tim though which at this point you all know I love. Let’s dive on in.

3x12 Brave heart.

Tim is paired with Nyla today since Nolan is otherwise occupied. They visit the hospital since Harper wants to check in on John and his son. Tim is annoyed cause they’re gonna get roped into something just being there. He takes a phone call while Harper checks in. It's the venue he booked for Angela's bachelorette party. They're calling him to say they're canceling and keeping his deposit. Tim was already grumpy being here and this is not helping.

Harper rejoins him and he asks her opinion on venues and she's got nothing for him haha They're about to leave then Lo and behold they spot guys with concealed carry’s. Tim mutters how it’s been less than 5 minutes since they arrived. Grumpy Tim has arrived and isn't leaving anytime soon. I do love how he walks up to them. Hand on his duty belt as they approach. Me likey. This man makes me a puddle just walking. My god. How does he do this? The man tries to charm them both. Saying how they must be recruiting from modeling schools now.

It's not working in the least. He then adds on between Tim and Nyla he can’t tell which one is prettier. Harper cuts him off and says clearly her HA! Tim looks so offended. His reaction is the best part. He low key knows how handsome he is. Except when women announce it then he’s shy af. He looks like he took it so personally. LOL

No Lucy around to help him lick his wounds. It's ok Tim I think you're the prettier one hehe They quickly find out it’s La Fiera’s body guards. Their cop spidey senses immediately going into overdrive. Tim groans because now they’re gonna be here all day. Harper asks him what he thinks she’s doing here? Tim says 'Nothing good'… We know that’s right.

Lucy and Jackson are also at the hospital. Their rolling stop turned into more. She took off and destroyed city property. She injured herself in the process and cut her arm. They’re now stuck there until she is patched up. Jackson says he’s gonna grab breakfast since he didn’t this morning. Lucy questions him skipping a meal. He replies he didn’t have a choice Tamara is eating them out of house and home.

Lucy apologies for thrusting her upon their living situation. Jackson is trying to be sweet about it says it’s ok… but wondering when she’s going to be leaving? Lucy says it’s so hard to get ahold of the housing program. They have crazy long wait times to check on her application. Jackson mentions using right now to check since they’re stuck anyways. Lucy lights up says that’s a good point. She gets very excited only 3 callers in line. She is so adorable I can not.

Jackson makes his way back to Lucy. She mocks him for his terrible breakfast choice. I mean it's not a great one ha Everything seems like it’s lining up for them. Their suspect is all patched up so they are ready to go. Their suspects runs just as Lucy’s phone call is answered. Poor Lucy that's some bad luck. Lucy hangs up losing her place in line. They chase her all the way to the parking lot where she passes out….They find out she’s a drug mule and that’s why she collapsed. They’re gonna be at at hospital even longer now especially waiting for a Narcotics detective to show up.

Angela is made aware of La Fiera’s presence at the hospital. Walks away from her OB appointment leaving Wesley hanging. She finds out she’s here "Just for her son." Angela doesn’t believe that for a minute. Wesley comes and finds them all angry she missed her appointment. Tries to ask Tim if this was work related? He makes sure to stay out of their spat LOL Tim is beyond adorable as the scene continues. He lost Angela’s venue of choice earlier. So he tries to make it up with a sports bar LMAO

Oh Timothy, Look at that gorgeous smile of his when he tells her his plan. Tim is so damn proud of himself and is shot down quickly after. Angela's face has me cracking up so very much. Tim gets nervous and says he was joking… He would never....The way he backtracks has me rolling. Watching Tim quake in front of strong women always gets me. What makes him such a sucker for Lucy. Also she is not around to negate his terrible idea's atm and it shows haha

Harper rolls up with security footage of La Fiera clearly not at the hospital "Just for her son." They spot Mack Daniels as one of the guards…Tim’s face is everything when he sees this. Clearly hasn’t changed his ways at all working for a Narco boss. SMH.

They roll up and Mack looks high as a kite. He lies about knowing who his client is. All he tells them is it’s not La Fiera. Tim tries to get him to cooperate. Saying he doesn’t need anymore trouble i’m sure. Mack cracks and says he’s work for Tomas Madrigal. All three of them groan. He’s the kingpin of drugs in Southern California. Multiple investigations going on for him. No way Mack doesn't know that.

He then starts the pity party about why he had to take this job. How it’s all Tim’s fault. He comes at Tim SO hard. Tells them he can’t be picky about the money he makes. Up to his eyes in debt. Tim tells him working for the enemy isn’t the answer. Mack goes on that his client is dying cancer. He’s only there to make sure no one interrupts his final moments. Mmmhmm sure…

Angela calls him out about La Fiera coming by. Mack tells her she only came by to pay her respects. Ok sure Mack… and I don’t find Tim attractive. We’re both telling lies today aren’t we? Clearly she is here to make a play for his business before he dies. They get interrupted by Tomas’s son telling Mack to get back to work. He sends more daggers Tim's way before disengaging with them.

I adore Nyla checking in on Tim. Asking if he's alright? His body language is stiff as a board. Poor love having to reface that decision he made back in 3x06. It was the right call but doesn’t make facing Mack’s wrath any easier. Also seeing how much Mack has fallen from grace since he last saw him. Taking jobs like this. Too bad Lucy isn’t there to help him. Since she’s not he shakes it off and pretends he is fine. When we all know he very much is not. But once again his girl is not there so he will clam right up.

I do love this trio working together. Only thing missing is Lucy. I hope in s6 we see Lucy make detective. Then these three BAMF women and Tim with metro can all work together on a case like this. Be amazing it would. Sigh. A girl can dream can’t she? Anyways Nyla says she certified for wire tapping and they have their next move.

We return to Lucy and Jackson waiting out their suspect. She now has to pass the drugs before they are able to leave. Plus they need someone from narcotics to show which they haven’t. Lucy tries her hand again at the phone call. She’s told she's 46th in line….Jackson says he’ll check on narcotics to see if they’re coming anytime soon.

After he’s told no update he pulls out his phone. Looking back at Lucy like he’s doing something wrong. I mean he is....lol. Lucy notices right away he’s looking at something. She comes over and asks what he’s doing? He lies and says Tiktok Lucy is incensed when she see that is NOT what it is. It’s clearly him watching Tamara. She just doesn't know why. This isn't Jackson's best moment I'll say that.

Lucy is instantly in protective mama mode over Tamara. She's so mad at him. As she should be honestly. I would be pissed too Lucy. WTF Jackson. He tries to cover it up by saying he’s testing their system. Then she pulls a line from Tim’s playbook. Calling Jackson a lying liar who lies baha Also she can break Tim Bradford when he's lying you are not going to fair much better my man ha I’m so offended for Tamara tbh and for Lucy. How Jackson assumes she took his Baby Yoda figurine. Just because of her background.

Jackson decides to step it in more with his next set of words. (Stop you fool....) That she shouldn’t trust Tamara cause she lived on the streets. How he wants her to trust Tamara. But she probably had to do a lot to survive on the street. Lucy is so upset he didn’t tell her how he really felt. Also the way he's coming after Tamara. He continues his witch hunt saying baby yoda is missing. Lucy snaps and says he isn’t. That she broke him. Didn’t think he would notice like he did. She was gonna replace it soon. Then does a Mic drop of a line leaving Jackson stunned. Rightfully so IMO. Not your best moment good sir....

The SL with La Fiera’s son is tragic af. It's all her fault (not that she is going to see it that way.... ) She brought him into the line of fire. Using him as cover to make her dealings. He gets caught in the middle and killed because of it. Tomas's son comes after her and Diego is the collateral damage. Wrong time wrong place for that kid. Its pretty damn sad.

Angela was there talking to her when her son is shot to death. So she blames Angela for the death of her son. He was away from her when the shooting began. (Couldn’t have been the deal she made of course…) This sets up the finale and 4x01 and why LA Fiera comes at Angela like she does. Even though Angela saves her life Diego was in the crosshairs and dies.

Angel gets pinned down and calls for backup. Luckily Nyla and Tim are still in the building. This little moment between them is too cute above. I love their rivalry with one another. Tim saying he’ll take two leaving the third for Harper. She has to over compensate and say she’s got the big guy. Tim’s reply ‘Not that big’ LOL It is sexy af to watch him in action not gonna lie. Dispatches his two pretty quickly.

We return to Jackson and Lucy waiting for their suspect to get out of surgery. Lucy is still on the phone waiting for a call. They finally answer her and she finds out Tamara is in. That she’ll get an email by weeks end. Her little dance of excitement is so damn cute. I swear that is just Melissa coming out and I friggin love it. Jackson takes this opportunity to apologize for being a suspicious jerk. Good man.

Super proud of him for doing this. I love that he wanted to make it right. But grateful Lucy had the foresight to stop him. It would break her heart and Tamara wouldn’t feel ok staying there. Be the worst idea ever to tell her he felt that way. Love Lucy looking out for her in that way. ❤️ His heart is in the right place but it would crush Tamara.

This final scene with Mack gets me right in the feels. Tim waits for him to leave the hospital. Wants to try and get through to him one more time. Mack giving him every excuse in the book why he can’t go to rehab. Tim battles back with more logic. The same kind of logic Lucy would throw at him in a situation like this. Like 3x07 where she destroyed his every point. Asking how many times have they seen junkies act like this? Say the same things? How many actually got out of the hole without going to rehab?

This is such a good scene for Tim. We once again get to see his good heart come out. Watching what’s become of Mack is eating away at him. Tim had to try one more time to help him. To save him from himself. He does a damn good job with his speech. Gah it’s so good. Eric crushes it per usual. Pre-tears in his eyes as he passionately pleas with his friend. Killing me softly.

Look how far Tim has come. I can not. This scene is proof of that growth. Also the good heart he had before it was beat up by Isabel and all that trauma he endured. He's confronting Mack even though he knows he's going to bite his head off. Because it's the right thing to do. Even tells him to use his hate for him. Especially if that's going to be his drive to get better. To get clean and go to rehab finally. That he refuses to give up on him.*heart clutch* You can see Tim slowly getting through to Mack with his unwavering support.

it really hits home when Tim tells him to be a better example for his kids. The way Eric delivers that line. Gets me good. To take his lumps and cowboy up. The beautiful mixture he has now of logic and empathy. It gets through to Mack and he pulls him in for a sweet hug. This hug is the best part. This gets me right in the feels. Lucy would be floored by him in this moment. For Tim to even think to reach out like this. To be there for Mack in this way. My damn heart.

Letting that empathy and good heart of his to see the light of day again. It was always there but it got buried in his trauma. I saw a quote the other day made me think of Tim. Also of the impact Lucy has had on him. ‘I think the most beautiful thing in the world, is watching the light come on in someone’s eyes after they’ve been in the dark so long.’

If that isn’t Lucy and Tim and the impact she’s had on him idk what is. She’s re-awakened this part of him he thought was long gone. The light in his eyes is back. I mean for Tim to even think to reach out like this. His growth always blows me away. He couldn’t stand the thought of his friend drowning. Especially after his hand in it. Needed to be apart of helping him heal. So he took a chance and it worked.

Even when they’re apart Lucy’s impact on him shines through. This scene is absolute beautiful proof of that. This man is wonderful and refuses to let his friend suffer. To go through this alone. So he makes sure he knows he has his back. The scene ends on a sweet note though. Tim asking if he knows any venues for bachelorette parties? Mack giving him same answer he already tried LOL So Cute. I can not.

Lucy and Jackson make it home. This is the cutest part of the episode for them. Tamara has made dinner for them both. it’s a very sweet thing for her to do. Tamara tells Jackson she has something for him. Saying she knows Lucy broke his Yoda thing LOL Then panics and makes sure he knows. Lucy confirms before she continues. This scene is too funny. Tamara got him a cute plushy to replace it. He is floored by her kindness. The fact that she felt the need to replace it at all. Even when she didn't break it.

She says it’s to thank him for letting her stay. It’s the first time she’s felt safe in forever. You watch the guilt wash over Jackson. How much he regrets ever thinking badly of her. He wants to tell her but Lucy stops him. I love the way Lucy gently puts her hand on his arm. Like 'No she doesn’t need to know this.' He course corrects and says she can stay as long she needs to. The smile on Tamara’s face says everything. It’s so sweet.

Jackson geeks out and ask if she’s seen The Mandalorian? She says it’s based on a movie right? Jackson tries to keep his geek in check and says he has a lot to teach her haha it’s very cute way to end the episode for this trio.

This ep although apart was super good for them SL wise anyways. What I love about them. They stand up so well as characters separately. I always prefer them together but I’m not miserable with their SL's apart every once in awhile.

I do continuously love how soft Nyla has become for Nolan. She drags Tim to hospital to check on him cause Henry collapsed.

arthur 1x11 analysis

HERE to the other stuff i wrote about merlin

what i truly deeply love about merlin 1x11, the labyrinth of gedref is not merlin calling arthur out for killing the unicorn, or him telling gedref that he trusts arthur with his life, or merlin following arthur in the labyrinth against orders, or him being smart.

it's not even arthur wanting to sacrifice himself for the kingdom, or him taking the blame for what it's happening to his people and showing everyone that he will be a great, just king, or him not allowing merlin to drink poison in his place.

all these things are great, and beautiful, and they just say a lot about how great these two are, both as individuals and together, ready to sacrifice themselves for camelot and for each other.

no.

what truly gets me, what has my heart in a clench, what keeps me awake at night is this:

arthur saying that he is glad that merlin is with him.

"I'm glad you're here, Merlin"

this is the part of the episode that most leaves me screaming and crying and sobbing.

because arthur, at this point, already knows he is going to drink the poison. he knows is he the one that will drink it, no matter what self sacrificing merlin has to say.

arthur here is not saying he is glad merlin is there because merlin is going to take his place and die for him. no, even if what he says just before may make someone think.

"I had no idea you were so keen to die for me."

"Trust me, I can hardly believe it myself."

this may make someone believe that arthur is glad that merlin wants to sacrifice himself for arthur (not that arthur will ever allow it).

but the truth is that arthur is glad that, since he will drink the poison and most likely die, he will at least be able to talk to merlin one last time. he is glad that merlin is there with him because he didnt want to die alone. he is glad merlin is there with him because merlin will be the last person he will see and the last person to see him.

and ultimately, he is glad that merlin is with him because merlin gives him the courage he need to do this.

arthur is brave enough. he is brave because he loves camelot and would die for his people, because he loves them.

but arthur is also brave because he loves merlin, be it friendship or something more, whatever suits you.

arthur is brave and merlin makes him feel brave as well.

and so, arthur is glad that merlin is with him.

he is glad that it's merlin the last person he may ever talk.

his first and true friend.

his loyal and brave servant.

his other half, even if he doesn't know it yet, but I'm sure he can feel it.

if arthur were to die, he is glad to do so with merlin by his side.

and the next thing that breaks me the most is that, whenever arthur has to face danger, he tells merlin to go away and save himself. and merlin always finds a way to tell him that no, he won't leave him. like in 2x13, the last dragonlord:

"Are you really going to face this dragon with me?"

"I'm not going to sit here and watch. I know it's hard for you to understand how I feel, but... well, I care a hell of a lot about that armour, I'm not going to let you mess it up."

which leaves arthur staring at merlin with undeniable affection.

or in 3x12, the coming of arthur:

"Merlin, you should go with them."

"Nah, I've seen the woods already."

and i can go on and on about every time merlin refused to leave arthur's side, like any other servant may do, like even a normal friend could do. and every time, arthur looks at merlin with relief.

and i truly believe that, every time, arthur thinks: if i am to die today, I'm glad to die with you at my side.

he thinks, every time: I'm glad you're here, merlin

Tbh i think I’m losing interest in the rookie 😞 I didn’t even start watching the show for chenford, I watched it because I thought it was good and the characters felt like family and only after I fell in love with chenford. But these days the show is more comedy than drama, the dynamics of the team are all over the place and I don’t like it, they give us chenford stuff only to act the following week like nothing happened and fuck continuity. I genuinely miss the s1-s2 vibes and how they used to deal with the team

Just like when they did the last few episodes of season three, two episodes without chenford interacting with each other?? One episode, Brave Heart, (3x12) everyone was in the hospital the whole episode.. not a single chenford scene???not them bumping into each other unintentionally.. NOTHING!!

The writers and Alexi knows that half of the fandom is rooting for chenford/ wants them to be endgame, but yet they barely pay much attention to them, nor do they listen to us!

As much as I do love some comedy, I do want some more drama.. these last few episodes, with the Wesley and Elijah storyline has a lot of drama. To be honest it’s stressing me out- but, I feel as if that’ll ruin Wopez since they got married.. I guess.. since we didn’t get to witness that.

But I’d like to see more dramatic scenes, more than comedic scenes. So again, I do understand what you mean, anon.

4. willow x oz, i dont know if this is an unpopular or not but i feel like if the 90s had been more accepting of term then willow wouldve been bisexual, but like even now tv shows will rarely let characters say that word :( but anyway i love them! theyre both quirky and kinda awkward but its such a sweet relationship and you really see how they go from awkward crushes to an actual deep relationship, oz is one of my favourite characters too what a dude!

3. giles x jenny, mlmxwlw solidarity in this bisexual couple! there is no an ounce of straight between them and i love it, i love their dynamic, i love that giles *respects women* (im staring daggers at xander rn), also the original girlboss x malewife couple askdjaksjhd

2. drusilla x spike, these two!!!!!! once again a bisexual couple with zero straight between them, the vibes are off the charts. sexy vampires, goth x punk love, i just love them man, and their relationship is so interesting to delve into. like theyre vampires, theyre soulless and yet they have a capacity for love, they care deeply for eachother, theyre so tender towards eachother in season 2 in the way they take turns to care for one another, also drusilla picking spike up with one hand made me gay and thats on that

1. willow x tara!!!!! lesbians man lesbians! they have a beautiful relationship, until a certain point wink wink, they feel like a perfect match, willows become more outgoing due to buffy and xander snd having a proper group of friends, so its cool to see her as the more outgoing independant one in the relationship, and tara is such a honey 🥺 the biggest sweetheart in the world what a babe!!!! also like how groundbreaking was their relationship? as a queer couple, they had p much the dame amount of screentime as a aueer relationship today! and willow says the word lesbian so many times and is always making gay jokes which is something shows today are too scared to do, its honestly refreshing which is weird for a show in the 90/00s

this is so hard because its such a damn good show so i had to rlly be picky about this but here we go

5. 6x22 ‘grave’- i watched buffy for the first time last year at work coz i worked with one other person just packing shit, and THIS was the episode that made us cry infront of eachother. the scene with willow and xander at the end is one of my all time favourite scenes and like legit we were watching and we starting going like ha.. this is so sad Q_Q and we looked at eachother and we were both crying akdjdjsjdhs its SO GOOD, like this is a friendship ive been so invested in and [seeing xander be able to pull her back from that dark place was so heart wrenching and amazing god its so good]

4. 3x12 ‘helpless’ - im finishing up s2 in my rewatch rn so i havent rewatched this one to double check but i remember loving it man. buffys father daughter relationship with giles is my favourite of the whole show they make my heart ache, so i love that this is an episode that really shows you how dedicated giles is to her, [its the breaking point where he finally disregards the fact that hes a watcher and acts as her father once and for all, its a turning point for their relationship where he is finally embracing the fact that shes like a daughter to him and i just love to see it Q_Q get you a dad who will leave his lifes calling for you]

3. 4x22 ‘restless’ - season 4 is interesting coz it has really good episodes and them some gd awful ones 😂😂 but this one just blew me away, i love a good character study episode and this is THE SHIT! its so weird and creepy but in the most perfect way, its not on the nose its so subtle, it feels like an uncanny valley version of buffy almost, i like that they finished the season first and then took this episode to do something out of the box and different i feel like it lets them fully explore this idea without the pressure of needing plot included. [also the cheese man is iconic. dont however like xander being all nasty with willow and tara but whats new there man]

2. 1x12 ‘The Prophecy Girl’ - for my first watch of buffy i wasnt that into the first season, like i enjoyed it but i didnt think it was anything super special? but this episode changed EVERYTHING for me. up until now buffy had been fun, witty, charming, but not anything new atleast for me, maybe in the 90s it was but right now its your average teen supernatural show. but this episode!!!! the emotion! buffy facing her death, her speech about how shes just 16 and shes scared and she doesnt want to die, that is what i wanna see!! its heartbreaking and it made me cry, and then it gives us the wonderful moment of giles trying to take her place and buffy realising that she has to be the one to do it, man its so good! basically anything with buffy and giles being a duo is gonna make it an automatic yes from me and this is indeed the case for this episode, i just love that the show remembers that shes a child! shes not brave all the time, shes not strong all the time, shes just doing her best and sometimes its overwhelming, 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 i bow to this episode

1. 2x17 ‘passion’ - i know i just sang praises about prophecy girl but THIS EPISODE IS THE SHIT, the best episode full stop. i wont accept any argument. angel is probably my favourite big bad, its so funny to see plain bread, mopey brooding angel become this charismatic, funny, poetic, blood thirsty angelus, hes everything i want in a villain and in this episode he delivers! rip jenny tho love her. i think the tension built around angel is so good, because of his drawings and notes left around, every scene youre worrying like is he here now? are they safe or what? its so tense! and also it is me and im a slag for buffy x giles father daughter moments and this episode fucking delivers! giles discovering jennys dead body is probably one of the best scenes on the show, the dramatic irony is heAVY, we know jenny is dead, we know that these flowers arent from her, but giles is so so happy, and i want to see him happy but you just know somehing horrific is about to happen and damn does it. its a masterpiece! i love jenny and giles so much it is so sad, but also the fact that it gave us that scene makes me almmmoost ok with it? i also love the moment where giles breaks down in buffys arms, hes been there for her and now shes returning the favour and hes accepting it i just 😭😭😭 also on a different note, angels narration of this episode is amazing! it gives us great insight to who he is as “evil angel” and like even though hes awful i was also kind of rooting for him coz hes just such a great villain

17. Which characer do you wish had less of a focus on them in the show?

i dont wanna get yelled at butttttt i dont like the amount of focus on dawn. i think it makes sense for the her first season considering the story arc but that season really does double down its focus onto dawn and buffy and it barely leaves room for anyone else to have a storyline, it keeps the episodes super depressing too its like a constant level of just sadness the whole time because we’re so stuck in THEIR arc, theres no room to balance it out and have a breather, some people might like that its more serious but i really really didnt like, i love episodes like prophecy girl where it is campy and brings the more emotional notes in when the time comes, but dawns whole arc is just constantly depressing the whole time i just hate it, and also just shes not a character i felt i could connect to because of how suddenly shes introduced, so its weird to have her SO focused on in the first half of that season coz we dont know her yet so i feel like the emotional moments dont land the way that they should? basically they shouldve eased us into dawn or introduced her differently and maybe i would like her enough to want the focus on her but i really just dont

The Man Without Fear, Not the Man Without Love

“No man is an island.”

And this is exactly what season 3 showed us.

This third season contained clear hints at Frank Miller’s The Man Without Fear, the most obvious one being Matt using these terms in his eulogy to Father Lantom’s in 3x13, as most of you noticed:

“He counseled me to transcend my fears, to be brave enough to forgive and see the possibilities of being a man without fear.” 

Fear can stem from a lot of different things: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of opening up to someone, fear of losing someone... Utimately fear has to do with one’s deepest scars. I think that in Matt’s case, it’s a mix of all of those, and more. But fear was counterbalanced, or rather worked hand in hand with another motif: the motif of love, whether it be romantic, friendly, or family related.

Love was omnipresent this season, notably through these couples:

Foggy & Marci 

Melvin & Betsy 

Nadeem & Seema 

Fisk & Vanessa 

Matt & Karen hold a special status as they were the only ones who were not really paired up, as they broke up in season 2. That’s why I will argue that the love all around them was used as a foil that pointed to their own relationship, past, present and future.

1) An overarching pattern

Foggy & Marci stand for reassurance, comfort, understanding, COMMUNICATION. And this might sound paradoxical, and you might disagree, but... I would say that Matt & Karen are actually good at this. At the beginning of season 3, there’s a LOT of things left unsaid, there’s been a lot of lying as well, on both parts, but when these two are together, they are often on the same page. And it’s because they’re so similar that things sometimes get ugly. But consider this: Marci is always comforting Foggy, calling him Foggy-Bear, caring about his well being. While Matt & Karen don’t have any nicknames for each other (this might be a fic prompt), they do reassure, comfort each other. A few examples:

1x01: they just met, Matt promises her he’ll keep her safe.

1x12: Matt tells Karen everything’s gonna work out, and then, in an other scene, she gives him THE hug.

1x13: Matt tries to get her to tell him what’s been up with her, but Karen doesn’t open up. He comforts her nonetheless.

2x02: Karen tells Matt he can tell her anything, and that he’s “worth keeping around.”

3x11: Karen tells Matt she’s not leaving him.

3x12: Matt tells Karen her mistakes don’t define her.

3x13: Matt tells Karen he’s happy she told him about Wesley and her brother.

These two, despite keeping SO MUCH to themselves and from each other, are always here for each other. I mean, the balloon??? Anyone?? Plus, when they’re brainstorming about a case, especially in season 2, they agree, they back each other up (except when Matt’s afraid for Karen’s safety... But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t think her ideas are that bad). There’s a kinship between them, something easy and natural, that is reminiscent of Foggy and Marci. And this aspect overarches all three seasons, and will continue.

2) The Past: Cutting All Ties

At the beginning of season 3, Matt’s still haunted by Stick’s teachings, and this is part of his struggle as a man who’s also supposed to be a warrior. Matt is a character torn between his will to love, let people in, and his fear of losing them. In addition, he’s also on a mission, and Stick’s advice was of course meant to keep him focused on the greater good, their common goal, but I’d like to think that Stick also thought of Matt’s own “well being” as well as his friends’. I think that, to him, cutting all ties was an act of mercy. But it all ended the same way: with Matt alone, and bloody.

Here’s what Stick told Matt in 1x07:

“Cut it loose, all of it. Cut yourself free from the women, the comforts, the fancy job. [...] Do you have friends? People you care about? [...] Cut 'em loose, for their sake. Break their hearts if you have to, just do it quick.” 

And here’s what Matt told Melvin... in 3x07:

"Fisk will know. And he'll hurt Betsy. If you really loved her, you'd cut her loose. This life doesn't work with Betsy's.” (27′58′‘)

This CANNOT be a coincidence: 1x07 ==> 3x07, and the very same words...? This is definitely a parallel to season 1 and Stick’s teachings. Here, we’re halfway through the season, and Matt JUST “reconnected” with Karen, but he’s not exactly been warm and friendly. He contacted her because he needed her help. Granted, he could’ve gone to anyone, and this was a first step to come back into her life... but I think that at this point, he wasn’t so sure about what would happen next. Would he stick around? Would he let them both go? Would he “cut’em loose” to protect them? When Matt tells this to Melvin, I think he actually believes that this is the right thing to do, both for Melvin, and for him.

3) The Present: To Hell with the Lies

The present is embodied by Ray & Seema, as well as Foggy & Marci. And these are two very different dynamics.

The main correlation between Ray & Seema and Matt & Karen is the lying part. Ray and Matt lie to the people they love most for the same reason: they want to protect them. By keeping the truth from them, they think they can shelter them. But all these lies cause a lot of damage:

Seema: “Do you know why I married you, Ray? It wasn't your good looks or my father's blessing. It was because I believed in my soul that I had found a good man who would love me. And who would be completely honest with me.” 

Ray: “Seems, I do love you-”

Seema: “You lied again and again.”

Just like Karen isn’t mad about Matt being Daredevil, but rather about all the lies, Seema is not angry at Ray for what he did, I think she gets that. But she’s hurt by his lies. The two pairs are parallaleled here. Loving someone means accepting them as they are, supporting them. But you can’t do that if you’re being lied to. Karen constantly supported Matt. She trusted him. He broke that trust. It’s the lies that broke them up, not Matt’s alias.

4) The Future: Working Hand in Hand

Finally, Vanessa & Fisk seem, to some extent, to foreshadow Matt and Karen’s future. These two will not be the evil couple of the series, but they will be working hand in hand. 

When she got back to NYC, Vanessa felt left out. She wanted to be part of Fisk’s world. To be fully his, and him fully hers. And you can’t do this if you keep your significant other outside of your world, if you shut them out:

Vanessa: “When you stopped your man from speaking in front of me, I I was reminded that I am not a part of your life. Not fully, and so not at all. And this I don't want to admire your world. I want to live inside of it with you.”

Fisk: “Vanessa, it's one thing to know my work, but it's another to dirty your hands with it.”

Vanessa: “My hands were never clean. If you truly want me share your life with me. Fully.”

That’s what Matt tried to do. He tried to keep Karen away, but eventually these two worlds collided and he had to tell her the whole truth. Just like Fisk let Vanessa in, completely, and allowed her to “rule” by his side, making calls, taking decisions. I believe that the show has built up to this, that Matt and Karen will now be working together, sharing everything. It was the last thing they needed to be able to be together, fully. Him revealing he was Daredevil, relying on her for some tasks (Jasper Evans, the press conference) was the beginning of a cooperation between them. Karen telling him all about her past was also a big step, she let him into her world. She needed to do this. 

What’s more, you can see the similarity between the reasons behind Fisk’s decision to keep Vanessa out of his “business” and Matt’s reasons not to tell Karen he was Daredevil: they both want to protect the ones they love from the darkness of their worlds, from what they could become because of it. Matt has put Karen on a pedestal, and even though he denied that, I think he idealized her, just like she idealized him. But they’re the same. They’re equally damaged, they’re both sinners, they’re equals.

To conclude, this might be far-fetched, but that’s the way I see it. This show isn’t about love, but... It’s still a huge part of it if you want my opinion, and this season especially. Love was everywhere. Right when Karen and Matt were broken up and figuring things out. I don’t think this is a coincidence. While watching the season, I truly felt like all these couples, all these quotes were about Karen and Matt, or could be applied to them. And after all, aren’t they now the epic love story of the show...? ;) 

So yeah, no man is an island. Matt cannot be an island, and he realized that. So did Karen. Important secrets, important scars were shared. And the Man Without Fear will definitely not be the Man Without Love.

Fundamentals - Arrow Music Notes 6x18

As the city moves towards impeaching Oliver as mayor and the team continues to disintegrate, Oliver finds himself confronted with hallucinations of himself and his past due to Vertigo.  This resulted in a wonderful mix of new and old music  throughout the episode.  (Warning: this is a long review)

This episode begins with the Hood attacking the new police precinct to stop Diaz with darker elements in the music reflecting Season 1 with minor brass chords, various electronics, less melody, and a lot more dissonance.

10 hours earlier, Felicity parent-trapped John and Oliver together trying to get them to work together again.  As John arrives, the brass chords play from “Trust and Verify”(1x11).  This track was the main theme during their painful fight in the previous episode.  After they throw jabs at each other, the strings from that theme return as Oliver tells John that he has earned a reprieve after listening to his advice for 6 years.  A theme that emphasized growing trust now accompanies a tear in their relationship.

Quentin notices that Oliver is discouraged after meeting the councilman regarding impeachment.  Oliver shares that John left the team over his leadership.  Quentin gives a beautiful speech that he has seen Oliver grow tremendously since being the Hood.  As he speaks, the French Horns play three notes from “Home of the Brave” (5x13).  This theme was during Oliver’s speech as mayor for gun reform.  Here it is a reminder of how far Oliver has changed from a Vigilante to mayor, the Green Arrow, and with a family.

Unfortunately, Oliver was drugged with Vertigo by the councilman.  As he goes home, he loses it with Felicity and breaks William’s science project while strings, hammered dulcimer, and guitar harmonics play “Join Us” (1x14).  This instrumentation was used much more frequently in Season 1 providing a little foreshadowing. That theme was first was used as Diggle explained why he was on Oliver’s team after his time in Afghanistan, asking himself the question: “am I still good?”  After all that is going on and losing it, that question haunts Oliver as heads to the bunker.

Oliver hears a noise that resembles banging on a pipe (a repeating indication something is off) and turns around to see Felicity in front of him.  This Felicity tells him that they need space as high electronics play.  These are the same sounds used in the background of the piano melody in “Someone you Love” (3x12 - “I don’t want to be a woman you love”) and “Let Each Other Go” (4x16 - giving back the ring after the fake wedding) evoking those same memories and feelings when she walks away from Oliver as she declares that Oliver showed William the man he really is and leaves, Oliver’s worst nightmare coming true.

Quentin finds Oliver heart-broken and discouraged (and high).  Strings, piano (Oliver’s instrument) and harp (Felicity’s instrument) play over those high electronics as Oliver tells him about Felicity leaving.  The harp plays a theme based off “Sara Silenced” (3x01), taking part of the string theme and changing the rhythm.  This repeats as Oliver asks why everyone leaves him and then  why Quentin hasn’t quit yet.  The harp and guitar harmonics then plays the underlying harmony often used with the slow Arrow theme especially in “Everyone Left” (5x02).  Quentin assures Oliver that he is changing but the others are dealing with their own issues and putting it on Oliver.  He add that Oliver should not worry about Felicity because she loves him as the harp turns to a new theme.

The banging increases (this pipe sound matches the Vertigo music in 3x01 “Greatest Fear” and several fighting tracks from Season 1 like “Damaged”) as does the dissonant high strings to reveal Adrian Chase, supposedly alive and well to the shock of Oliver.  As Chase shoots Oliver, his glissando strings “Prometheus” (5x01) begin.  These come back against the Arrow horn as they fight.  Chase continues to taunt Oliver that he will come back for Felicity and William and Oliver is left in the same dilemma as 5x23 whether to kill Chase.  This time he does and when he breaks Chase’s neck, the music from 1x01 plays “City in Ruins.”  This is the electronic motif when he says “no-one can know my secret” and kills his kidnappers in the exact same neck hold (the same happened in 5x01.)

Chase’s tick-tock theme returns as he reappears: “I might not be killable.”  Oliver, however, realizes that he is hallucinating as the violins and horn play his hero theme.  As Chase monologues echoing Oliver’s doubts and fears regarding alienating everyone around him and being his own worst enemy, snippets of melody fragments and instruments emerge amidst the high, fluid, sliding electronics emphasizing how this is no longer reality.  As the scene progresses, lower notes under-pin the gravity of the situation once he realizes he has been drugged with Vertigo.  Echoes of the Arrow hero theme plays in electronics as Chase repeats John’s sentiments that Oliver is stretched too thin and a worse leader despite being happier.

Oliver gets into the elevator on the way to meet the council only to enter the Queen mansion.  The strings, hints of hammered dulcimer and flute play the music from the pilot when he entered the Queen mansion and sees Thea.  Now he sees a room full of memory for his family before he turns and sees pre-Gambit Laurel.  As he interacts with this version of Laurel asking about his upcoming trip, “Loss and Regrets” (1x01) plays.  This is the theme for Oliver and Laurel since their first encounter when he gets back from the Island, with Laurel declaring she wished he would rot in hell longer than 5 years for what he had done.  Oliver will always have a deep regret for how he destroyed the Lance family in choosing Sara to leave with him and cheating on Laurel.  Throughout the whole scene, a high pitched dissonance note plays to remind that this is not reality but another hallucination.

The music grows more intense as the scene changes to Laurel dying in the hospital and then to Rene.  As his emotions heighten against the newbies, percussion, brass, and string patterns adds to the fighting intensity.  The music changes to a sinister nature as he sees Raisa stabbed and Diaz enters the picture.  A low note accompanies the scene right before Diaz stabs Oliver and then switches to a low electronic beat and electronic chords. That low electronic repeated note has been with Ricardo Diaz since he was introduced in 6x06 and again at the end of the episode as he says the same words: that he wants to break Oliver piece by piece.

The high electronics continue as he wakes up and then sees the Hood. As the Hood yells that he has failed the city, a repeated low note underpins the visceral darkness of the Hood.  Oliver finally gets to the meeting with the City Council, and the music is unsettled with distorted high electronics as he continues to see Chase, a visual reminder that he is still on Vertigo and a little unstable.  String patterns, timpani, and low brass fill in as the council starts to interrogate him about the Green Arrow and where he got his proof. Quentin takes him aside to regroup and then tells him to go the bunker to get well.  Chase reminds Oliver that he is in his head as hammered dulcimer (often in S1) is added to the Arrow style music.  The Arrow hero theme plays in the horn with the Arrow string theme as Chase tells Oliver that a hero would make the risk to stop Diaz once for all.

Several different Arrow string patterns play as Felicity discovers that Oliver has gone to the precinct and runs to stop him.  Meanwhile guitar harmonics play as Quentin tries to stop Oliver dressed in his old Hood costume. Felicity enters the precinct to see the aftermath of the fight shown at the beginning of the episode.  High distorted electronics with a few interspersed low bass notes and percussion emphasize the danger that both Felicity and Oliver are in.  As Oliver believes that Felicity is still a hallucination, brass and higher electronics alternate as Felicity in the reality conflicts with what he has been seeing.  Chase tries to convince him not to listen and give up his fight with a percussive repeating note and the crazy distorted notes continue as Oliver admits he does not know if she is real.  Felicity touches him and asks him to listen to his heart, as the Olicity theme “The One I Love” (2x23) plays in the strings, bringing him back to reality in time for them to escape to the Arrow strings.

The same harp theme from earlier (when Oliver was taking to Quentin) returns as he tells Felicity that he got clarity from his time on Vertigo to bring the mission back to basics and alone.  (Sorry Oliver, no-one makes good decisions based on a drug trip).  The guitar harmonics continue as Oliver is impeached as mayor.  Later on, Felicity and Oliver discuss this in the loft, harp and strings play while a horn plays a new theme as Oliver feels certain he needs to separate his two worlds.  Then he goes to talk to William to make sure they were alright.  The Arrow hero horn plays as he tells William that he thinks he has found a way to stop Diaz.
