one of the myriad things that I vehemently want the 5th wave of feminism to achieve is getting pornography and prostitution/sex work banned from the face of this planet. like get every porn site wiped off from the internet. and yes that includes getting rid of the OF too. we've seen enough of the capitalisation of sex or precisely of women & young girls. I mean after a noticeably exponential increase in the cases of sex/child trafficking from the past many years, it leaves us no choice but to eradicate it once and for all.

4th, last I heard. But I think with the rise of TERFs it's probably going to be 5th soon. There seems to be a rising tide of trans hate to go along with the usual radafem man hate these days.

Sailor Moon Epiodes #1,2,4,8

What can I say, Sailor Moon is like the most anime ever. This show’s right up there with Naruto, Dragonball Z and Evangelion in terms of popularity. The show is a pretty straightforward shoujo magical girl anime. It follows a female lead with magical powers, accompanied by a cat, who has to use her whimsical space magic to defeat power ranger-esk villains who are evil for the sake of “I’m evil lmao.” Our main lead is Usagi who is “a bit of klutz” and a hardcore slacker who gets dragged into the world of crime fighting by a cat named Morgana… I mean Luna. Using the power of the moon or something like that, she transforms into a sailor scout (a power ranger but epic) to use the powers of deus ex machina to absolutely incinerate any evil in a single blow. All that we watch is pretty episodic and follows the typical Saturday morning cartoon plot which gets a bit repedative after the 5th “In the name of the moon, I’ll punish you.” Regardless, the show picks up down the line and is not only timeless, but quite enjoyable.

What we watch shows the typical features of the girl power movement of 3rd wave feminism. The female lead is the crime fighting protagonist who works with another female companion (her cat and eventually the other planetary sailor scouts). The show follows her and humanizes her as a full person and not just a sexual object like female heroes of the past did. The focus is on her fighting evil by moonlight and winning love by daylight. Her everyday life is put into focus showing Usagi going through classes, dealing with her love life, and her everyday life (slice of life stuff). On top of that, her Sailor Moon moments usually focus on her fighting with only her witz (for the most part). She doesn’t exclusively fight with the permission of men nor alongside them, in fact the sailor scouts can only be women. She breaks the gender norm and shows fills the role a normally male based hero would fill in a city in peril.

This female empowerment was a good first step that gave way for a lot of subsequent situations of women breaking the gender norms in media. Though Sailor Moon did help break the stereotype, it wasn’t free from the women stereotypes of the past. Usagi is at times dependent on Tuxedo Mask (played by Robbie Daymond, the absolute goat) for encouragement and the will to fight. She relies on a man to give her purpose and drive, a common trend seen in depiction of women in older media. Furthermore, Usagi is depicted as very sensitive and very prone to breakdowns which once again play into the old generalizations. The show also does play into the lewd fantasy of most guy-centric shows (despite being for girls) by appealing to the male depiction of sexual clothing. The sailor scout uniforms can be seen as skimpy and appealing to the school girl fetish popularized in the otaku community. However, the personality stereotypes are combatted by the other sailor scouts, like Sailor Murcurey (the second scout to join the gang), by showing high levels of intelligence, tenacity, and leadership.

Something I found neat and wanted to point out was episode 8 in specific which depicts the struggles of so called “star students.” Studying hard and getting good grades isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and usually requires a large amount of effort from the students and put a lot of strain on the individual person. Ami puts in a lot of effort and sacrifices fun for her studies. This shows we should have a balance of both academia and enjoyment in our days to have a fulfilling life. I believe Usagi and Ami show the two extremities of the academia/recreation spectrum. Together, they can make up for each other’s shortcomings.

Overall, I enjoy Sailor Moon and recommend everyone at least give it a go at least once. It shows it’s age and, like I said before, is very much a Saturday morning cartoon but nonetheless, it’s fun to watch.

Feminism In Levels

Feminism is a weedy word, thick with all manner of vines and roots, caveats and claims. Sometimes to come against feminism feels like a shadow boxing match. You can never land a good punch because there’s always a counter-point or goal that can make someone appear as a bad person to even criticize its ideas. Well, I want to bring to light a handy way of categorizing feminism that has aided me in discussing it. We are currently in the 4th or 5th “Wave” of feminism, each more intersectional and revolutionary than the last. The 1st wave was what you expect, women’s suffrage. The 2nd was the extension of rights in courts, job discrimination based on sex instead of merit, and near the end a voice to callout men being rapists when they’re rapists. Cool. I think anyone who is against these on all ends, could use a little sit down, or maybe even a deeply concerned discussion. When the problems come along is in the 3rd wave (1990s-2010). In this stage Kimberle Crenshaw’s Intersectionality laid its claws in the movement. Turning something that was a social bus of fairness into a Greyhound of victim validation. This is when the marginalization rhetoric and reparations talk began. Clamor to giving specialized rights for being (in the eyes of a special committee) oppressed or disadvantaged relative to another. We’ll talk about Intersectionality in a later post, but you get the gist. So if you’re ever asked are you a feminist, you can now clarify very easily to what degree. Take it from someone who has too many of these conversations, its something of a lifehack!

Their current campaign "Making Is Hot" is a great way for them to show what they do, turning away from how sustainability is seen as quite reserved and turning it into modern, sexy, wear.

Loewe exhibition

Isn't it funny now how a brand is now the superstar - it doesn't wait for a collaborator, a museum to help it? Now it controls the narrative of it's archive, shows its point of view on things, when things happen, who is included, because it is the superstar in that equation.

The spectrum of womanhood in the mainstream:

Alongside the fact that trad-wives have become popular talking points, or just stay at home girlfriends (in the US but I'm sure you can find British examples), they've become points of ire in this 3rd (really 2nd wave feminism) world. Possibly because of the past 15 years and the rise of the far right across the world, bringing conservative values and also social media now being able to see not only what people you follow think about what but also people, who the algorithm think have something interesting to say, think.

Female masculinity or just masc sexuality in women is now I feel, coming more and more into the mainstream view where 20 or 30 years ago a film like Drive Away Dolls would have been seen as snuff or something but is now respected because it's directed by one of the Coen brothers. This is the opposite side of the spectrum where the masculinity isn't cosplay - it's real life.

EDIT: The day this was originally published this below was also published and I think that the writer doesn't go deep enough? There's still quite a bit of lack with non-white stories in that aspect in the mainstream.

I think that the internet has made people (especially on X, and in Britain) *way* more reactionary than before. There's such a lack of compassion, a sense of isolation and not a want to understand or see things from another point of view. This and when the Queen died I wrote about growing nationalism. It's a very narrow path to walk down if you want to make culture. Or if you just want to experience something....I think we're in for another 5 brain melting years but unfortunately "escapism" is possible.

The Feminine is our ability to tap into our subconscious.
