Yennefer collapsed in the wrong direction on the weights bench next to him and Geralt didn’t even turn his head.

She let loose a huge dramatic groan of agony, her usual lead-in to gym-time conversation. Geralt grunted in response. His usual response to everything.

“I despise the double standard of conventional beauty requirements more than I could possibly say,” she started. “For you it’s completely fine to bulk up like some barely sentient mountain but for me I must add cardio and endurance training to my weightlifting regimen if I’m to maintain any kind of toned physique as is required of me by our terrible misogynistic society.”

Geralt grunted in response.

Yennefer sighed and flipped over, back to the weightlifting bench so she could at least look as if she would be using the equipment properly. “I took that spinning class they keep advertising on the front bulletin board. It kicked my arse.”

Geralt raised an eyebrow but paid her no attention beyond that, continuing with his reps.

Yennefer generously waited for him to place his bar back on the rack, letting him take his time to respond to that clearly outrageous statement.

“I have seen your arse, Yen.” Geralt responded, finally. “I have to imagine you’re exaggerating.”

Yennefer preened a bit at the compliment but let loose another sigh. “I’m not. The relentless twink who teaches is a vicious tyrant. He picked on me immediately.”

Geralt’s attention had already been caught by Yennefer’s specific mention of a twink but the last bit about being picked on compelled him to respond with words. “Picked on you? How?”

Yennefer groaned again, theatrically flipping her hair over her shoulder in a respectable display of defeat. “He called me out as a weightlifter straight away and wouldn’t leave me alone all class, telling me that I wouldn’t last a day in his world and yelling at me to keep up. He was more than lovely by the end when I had actually managed to hold on for the whole class but I was so exhausted I couldn’t move. He laughed at me even as he helped me out of his room.”

There was far too much in that to unpack, Geralt just latched on to the first part. “He thinks weightlifters are weak?”

Yennefer shrugged. “It’s not like he’s wrong. Look at me.”

“Yes, but you’re…” Geralt trailed off, Yennefer’s expression working like a spell to dry his words right up.

“Yes?” She prompted, poisonously.

Geralt grunted in a way that would have sounded like someone clearing their throat in embarrassment if Geralt ever did anything as pedestrian as that.

“I’m not weak,” he answered, simply.

Yennefer hummed. A dangerous sound. The rattle of a snake before it lunges.

“Well,” she said, flipping her hair the other way, to punctuate her ‘well’. “Care to place a bet on that?”

Geralt found himself scanning his gym pass that next Wednesday at 6 o'clock in the morning.

This wasn’t unprecedented: Geralt worked from home, so most of his self-appointed socialization came from visiting the gym. And he often went early in the morning because, even if the gym was mostly empty, it still counted as socialization to be in a place other people were.

The difference was, instead of heading straight to the rowing machine to warm up or the weightlifting benches for his daily reps, he waited, glumly, outside the dark, glass-encased studio where the spin class was supposed to take place.

He took Yennefer up on her bet. He hadn’t wanted money: he was mostly doing this for pride (and bragging rights), but if Yen won, she got to pick Geralt’s outfits for the week.

Geralt’s outfits usually defaulted to the gym clothes he worked out in, seeing as that was his only reason to get dressed, and that consisted mostly of black cutoff sweats and a black muscle tank. Which is what he wore now.

The assembled crowd seemed to be mostly chattering moms, here for an early morning workout before they had to get their kids to school. Or there were some professional looking women, getting their class in before a day at the office. Mostly women.

There were at least two other men, speaking to each other, but from what Geralt could guess, they were likely here to ogle the twink spin instructor Yennefer had mentioned rather than any desire to ride a stationary bike to music for an hour.

All of them gave him a wide berth.

The doors opened at exactly 6:15, a mousy looking brunette guy peeking his head out with a grin. “Okay, true believers, who’s ready to sweat?”

Some of the moms sent up a practiced sounding “Whoo!” but the professional looking women just offered the guy a smile and made their way past him through the door, beelining toward the bikes in the middle.

Geralt hung toward the back, letting everyone head in before him, sure there would be a bike in the back corner he could claim when he got in there.

The mousy guy stopped him at the door with a hand on his chest.

“You’re new,” the guy said, looking up at Geralt with a teasing curiosity.

Geralt didn’t bother to reply. What he’d said hadn’t been a question.

The guy grinned, taking a step back and crossing his arms, blocking Geralt’s entrance to the studio. His frame was slight but muscled, his outfit a neon-hooded but sleeveless crop-top and a pair of running shorts like something out of postcard from South Beach from the 90’s. This was definitely the twink Yennefer had mentioned.

“And not very friendly,” the guy observed, looking Geralt up and down. “What, were you planning on sitting in the back of the room to brood?”

Geralt grunted. It was close enough to what he’d come to do.

The guy grinned wider. “I’m afraid that won’t do. You see we like to welcome every new student to my class of spin with a featured front row seat. That way I can best review your performance and decide what best to focus on in upcoming classes.”

Geralt grunted again, showing his teeth in a way that was more sneer than smile. “I just came to finish one class.” he growled.

The guy’s eyebrows hitched up and he actually let out a surprised little scoff. “Oh, you think you’re going to finish class today?”

Geralt grunted in a way that couldn’t have more clearly conveyed ‘Obviously’ if he’d said the word aloud.

Mr. Twink Spin Instructor clicked his tongue sceptically, again looking Geralt over, his eyes lingering on his shoulders and neck. “We’ll see about that.”

Geralt felt like he was going to die.

“That’s right everyone! We’re feeling it, we’re loving it, and now get ready to kick it up! Here we go! Everyone off your seat!”

Geralt attempted to stand in his stirrups but his legs gave out immediately. His tailbone connected painfully with the seat of the stationary bike.

The instructor had been perfectly accommodating at the start, leading Geralt to a bike at the front and helping him adjust his settings. He showed Geralt how to adjust the bike’s resistance and helped strap his feet into the stirrups that were in place of pedals. For safety.

Or just to keep him as a prisoner as he struggled and was verbally abused for it.

“Everyone is doing so wonderfully except our lovely blond mountain up front. Come on Mr. Grumpy, where’s your spirit?”

Geralt didn’t even have enough breath to grunt. He had no idea how this man could talk so much.

“Couple more pushes and then we have our decline. Then we’re onto sprints!”

Geralt huffed in a way that only vaguely resembled the word ‘fuck’.

He finished the pushes but couldn’t physically sit up in his seat for the decline. He was collapsed on the handlebars and couldn’t move.

He’s not sure when his legs stopped, only that the instructor was very loudly making fun of him.

“And it looks like our big strong muscle man is down for the count. Now, friends, let’s not mock him. It’s unkind to lambaste someone’s weaknesses.”

Geralt couldn’t pick up his head, but he curled four of his fingers down in a very weak approximation of the bird. The instructor laughed, jovially.

Geralt’s breath evened out in time, but his limbs would not cooperate with him as he tried to pick up with the workout. He managed to undo his feet from the stirrups, his arse slipping off the seat, slick from his sweat. He got his feet on the ground and stumbled out from the dark and loud room to spare himself the second half of the class. And his torment.

The instructor did take a parting shot as he left: “Excellent work finishing class, Mr. Muscles! Please do come back soon.”

Yennefer was extremely smug.

Geralt was nothing if not a man of his word so he arrived at the gym the next day and took her proffered garments without comment, ducking into the locker room to change.

It was the loudest leopard print jumpsuit he had ever seen. Geralt was disgruntled and impressed: where had she even found something like this in his size?

He did his workout as normal. He noted the extra stares he got from surrounding lifters but they said nothing so neither did he.

Yennefer talked a mile a minute, her breath not even stuttering with her reps, and all Geralt could think about was that damn twink who’d made fun of him. How had he instructed that whole class and still had the energy and breath to talk and cheer everyone on the entire time? He’d never even paused in his litany: constant encouragements and critiques and instructions and, in Geralt’s case, cheerful insults. It would have been admirable if it hadn’t been so annoying.

Perhaps there was value in such high intensity cardio.

Geralt scanned his gym card at the same time the next week, back for the spin class.

This time he had brought a 32 oz water bottle, a sweat towel so he wouldn't slip off the seat (again) and even more resolve.

He was also wearing an obscenely tight and tiny crop top and booty shorts with “Are u Nasty?” printed across the arse. This was the last day of Yennefer’s punishment and of course she’d saved the most ludicrous outfit for last.

The outfit did make him more interesting to the assembled crowd, it seemed, but all it took was a sneer from Geralt and they were minding their own business again. Or they weren’t outwardly gawping, at least, which was something.

When the instructor peeked his head out to welcome them to class that week his eyes instantly caught on Geralt and he positively lit up.

“You’re back!” he said, not even bothering to greet the other students. “I did not think you would be! Much less dressed like this.”

“Lost a bet,” Geralt volunteered for no reason he could discern. He didn’t need to explain himself to this guy. Nor justify what he was wearing. What business was Geralt of his?

“I’ll have to thank the bet commissioner should I ever meet them.” the guy mumbled, his eyes lingering on Geralt's exposed sternum. It really was an extremely short crop top.

Geralt just grunted, watching the instructor watch him.

“I didn’t properly introduce myself last time,” the instructor said, dragging his eyes up from Geralt’s navel to his face. “I’m Jaskier.”

Geralt grunted again but, after a moment of consideration, answered “Geralt.”

Jaskier grinned. “Glad to be acquainted,” he said. “Shall we begin class?”

Geralt was able to grab a bike in the back this time for which he could only be grateful: he knew his arse was falling out of these shorts and he was reluctant to subject the others to it.

He did better in this class. He drank water when they had a moment, though the guzzling of it did serve to make him feel ill. He wiped his sweat at intervals but dropped his towel halfway through and had to do without it for the rest of class. He couldn’t bend far enough to the floor to pick it up.

Even if Geralt was doing better, Jaskier still picked on him, even in the back of the class. Jaskier seemed to have decided he liked him. He told Geralt to lift his knees higher or try to hold his core and not bounce as much or “Do this bit without holding the handle bars”.Geralt followed his instructions, because he wasn’t a quitter, but he was sure each time he tried he embarrassed himself more.

He made it longer this time but still found himself collapsed over the handlebars before the end of class, unable to move. He didn’t bother dismounting his bike and making his way out this time, knowing he’d have to walk all the way through the other bikes to get there: the door was at the front of the room. And Geralt was happier to wait out the class than suffer that humiliation again.

So Jaskier teased him for his useless vanity muscles again (and, seriously, why were all of the insults about his muscles?) but by the time Geralt was officially spent, Jaskier didn’t linger on his presence for long.

By the time class was over, Geralt was feeling relatively back to normal if not completely sore all over. He undid his stirrups and bent to retrieve his towel, coming face to face with Jaskier when he stood back up.

He was grinning, of course. “You did better today.”

Geralt grunted, ignoring the dirt and grime from the towel’s time on the floor and using it to wipe his neck. “I always aim to improve.”

Jaskier smiled wider. “An admirable quality in a man.” he winked.

Geralt grunted again, turning his attention to his water bottle, unscrewing and re-screwing the top. “Any tips?”

Jaskier hummed, leaning against the front of Geralt’s bike. He was dressed similarly to last week, but this time with a blue-purple color palette, more berry look than the lemon-lime of last week.

“Try doing cardio between classes, too,” he answered, his eyebrows arched in a superior looking way. “Build up your endurance.”

Geralt grunted in a way that could have been construed as a ‘thanks’ before pushing off the bike and making his way out.

He heard Jaskier call out behind him: “See you back next week!”

Jaskier did see him back next week. And the next week, and the week after that.

After those first two classes, Jaskier got extremely, weirdly supportive. Every minute longer Geralt made it in class from the week before, Jaskier would praise him and give him compliments. Geralt was equally put off and flattered by it. Once, Jaskier said "Look at this white-haired Hercules, moving his muscle around. He's struggling but he's getting there!” when he’d had them do a lot of increased resistance sprints. And another time, during a speed run, he’d said “How do you move your huge body so fast? You're doing amazing!" Which was at once patronizing and nice to hear. He did not need to be babied, to be treated like a toddler just learning to ride a bike. But the way the spin instructor smiled at him did make him feel as if he’d achieved something.

Whether that something was an achievement with spin classes or something else was hard to say and no one’s business.

Yennefer had not been keeping up with Geralt’s continued attendance of the spin class. She was not usually at the gym that early and didn't catch Geralt until he was well into his workout, so she didn’t even know he’d been practicing cardio. She herself had been weighing the merits of taking up lap swimming which, while with the unfortunate side effect of making her feel like she’s drowning, also meant she could show off her fabulous physique and look sexy coming out of a pool, which were both extremely important to her.

Geralt, as someone who was fond of watching Yennefer get out of a pool, supported this. He also supported this as a way to steer her away from the spin classes, but one ulterior motive was enough. Yen wouldn’t go looking for another.

It wasn’t until the fourth class – a full month of failure and doing cardio as a warm-up before he lifted in the days between classes – that he could make it through a full class, not only having completed the exercise, but not feeling as if he wanted to die.

Jaskier made the whole class clap for him. Geralt gave them an awkward wave in acknowledgement.

His goal was to make it through an entire class. And now he had. He could give up the secrecy: there was no reason to come back.

Except Jaskier was skipping over to him after the class, smile wide in congratulations.

“Well done Mr. Muscle Man!” Jaskier said, clapping Geralt on each shoulder, shaking him a bit with his enthusiasm. “Oh what a journey it’s been! And now here you are!”

“Here I am,” Geralt growled, but in a fonder way than he’d thought himself capable of.

This instructor was extremely annoying. But somewhere along the way Geralt had become incredibly endeared to him.

“You really have done great,” Jaskier told him, his face less bright and more soft. He stood with his hands on his hips, swaying a bit as if the loud music from the class were still affecting him. His outfit was softer today as well: a forest green rather than neon monstrosity. It matched closer to Geralt’s usual black. “I do hope you come back.”

Geralt grunted. He didn’t have any reason to come back. He’d proven he could make it a whole class. He’d done what he’d gone there to do.

But–

“It’s not like I have anything else going on at this time,” he admitted, voice low.

Jaskier’s answering grin was loud.

“Excellent! Now I don’t have to do something stupid like ask you on a date just to see you again.”

Geralt blinked, fumbling his water bottle, the lid of which he’d been carefully unscrewing and rescrewing.

“Why would you do something like that?”

“Haven’t I just said?” Jaskier answered, his eyes glittering with the same mischief Geralt had seen when they’d first met. “To see you again.”

Geralt grunted, his eyebrows furrowing in frustration. “But now I’ve said I’ll come back to class you’re not interested in a date?”

Jaskier cocked his head, his sweaty hair falling past his eyes. “Are you asking?”

Geralt blinked again, biting his lip. He felt like he had been tricked, but he wasn’t completely angry about that.

“If I did,” he started, his already deep voice going deeper as he took half a step closer. “What would be your answer?”

Jaskier looked up at him, his neck stretching back the further he had to look up. “Why don’t you ask and find out.”

Geralt growled and Jaskier just continued to grin at him. The spark in his eye had become a smoldering fire and Geralt was becoming more and more interested in being consumed.

“Let’s go for a drink.” He said, his voice getting even lower, stepping even closer.

It wasn’t a question but Jaskier grinned and answered anyway.

“Yeah, okay.”

Jaskier didn’t take a single step back. He didn’t lean away. He stiffened his chin and met Geralt’s eye.

Yennefer was going to be so smug.

These Pantry Labels Made by a Blogger in Minnesota Are Taking Over TikTok

How simple, streamlined white stickers ended up in pantries across America

Before the pandemic, I never spent much time in my apartment’s tiny galley-style kitchen, preferring to dine out (or take out). Stay-at-home orders changed all of that. My refrigerator has never been more full, and while I’ve actually come to enjoy cooking, I found that recipes were taking twice as long as they should because of my overflowing spice cabinet. I’d sift through jars of turmeric and Everything But the Bagel blends, pushing past pumpkin-pie spice and paprika to search for garlic powder, only to realize I was out.

In the midst of my frustration, TikTok’s For You page, which seems to have an algorithm that knows me better than I do, surfaced an organizational video by Brooklyn-based blogger Teresa Caruso that details how she turned her “hot mess” of a spice cabinet into a pristine display. (Lest you think TikTok is just dancing teens, the #diy hashtag has nearly 40 billion views.) Caruso’s project seemed entirely doable, if a little time consuming. But the real sell for me was the streamlined white stickers she placed on each of her spice jars. Something clearly resonated with other people too: Her how-to has since been viewed over 3.4 million times.

Caruso first got the idea to revamp her cabinet after seeing a similar project by carpenter and blogger Jen Woodhouse on Pinterest. “My bottles were just multiplying — I’d buy things, forget them in the back of the cabinet, and all of a sudden was left with three huge bottles of crushed red pepper,” Woodhouse told me. She came across custom spice labels by Kim Negaard, a Minnesota graphic designer and blogger who runs Paper & Pear on Etsy. Woodhouse appreciated the stickers’ “clean, modern look,” as did her followers — after she posted about the undertaking on Instagram, she was inundated with requests for where she bought them.

While Etsy offers plenty of similarly spare spice labels by a host of sellers, Negaard’s designs are among the most popular — her minimalist and modern labels have over 2,300 reviews. When I got in touch with Negaard to learn more about her brand, she said the business was inspired by a personal need: A few years ago, in an effort to “reduce packaging waste and the environmental impact” of cooking, she and her husband started buying bulk spices at their local food co-op and storing them in old jars. But the upcycled containers lacked labels, and when she couldn’t find any options she liked, she decided to make her own. An Etsy shop soon followed.

And while TikTok has certainly boosted her fan base, she says she began noticing an uptick in business in February, just before the country went into lockdown. Suddenly, “there was this unique combination of people with extra time on their hands to tackle home projects who also couldn’t eat out,” she explains. Negaard says she and her husband are now operating at ten times the amount of sales compared to the end of 2019; from January to March 2020, sales were 3.5 times what they were during the same period last year.

The labels have experienced notoriety on other social-media platforms. Earlier this year, Domino highlighted organizer Shira Gill’s overhaul of a kitchen belonging to Identité Collective founder Anastasia Casey, and the resulting spice cabinet — featuring Negaard’s signature labels — has been regrammed and pinned hundreds of times. Negaard believes the design is so popular because “it’s something that photographs well and can easily create a visually satisfying before-and-after effect that both TikTok and Instagram thrive on,” she says.

Casey told me that, though she loves her kitchen’s Paper & Pear labels, she believes the appeal of pantry overhauls on social media extends beyond some thoughtfully designed spice jars. “Those little moments of organization bring some calm to the storm and are a welcome mental break,” providing people with a small sense of accomplishment and control, Casey says. Adds professional organizer and Pinch of Help founder Brittani Allen, “The uniformity of the bottles and stickers eliminates just about all of the visual clutter of different spice bottles,” she says. “Our brain has less to process without all of the different packaging, which provides a calming effect every time you open your spice cabinet.” And these days, many of us welcome a little bit of calm anywhere we can find it.

Natural Oven Cleaner that MELTS Away Years of Grease and Grime

This is the story of how I managed to learn how to clean an oven without using chemicals, and hopefully this natural oven cleaner might help someone else in a similar pinch.

Why do I love natural oven cleaner?

Well, I’m embarrassed to admit: I haven’t cleaned my oven in six years. (Yes, that’s gross. I know.)

Call it a combination of procrastination and the stubborn refusal to use chemical cleaners in my house (I do crazy stuff like use whipped coconut oil for lotion)–and, I’ll admit, a dash of unadulterated laziness.

Not to mention I couldn’t really tell someone how to clean an oven if they asked me. So I put it off. And put it off. A

nd as time went on, all that grease and grime kept building up until my oven was downright scary.

I mean, it’s not like I never tried to clean my oven. I really did–once or twice. I saw those nifty pictures on Pinterest that claimed vinegar and baking soda could act together as a natural oven cleaner that would magically dissolve away oven grease, and thought, “Wow, that looks easy!”

Didn’t happen.

So there I was with a filthy oven, a bad case of procrastination, and more than a little resentment toward Pinterest. But all was not lost. Here’s my natural oven cleaner recipe and tips.

How to Clean an Oven: To Scrub or Not to Scrub

When it came to doing the dirty work of cleaning my oven, there was one reality I didn’t want to face: a little elbow grease was required.

I detest scrubbing (that’s that dash of laziness I was talking about). Some heavy duty chemical oven cleaners claim you can clean your oven without scrubbing, but I had two problems with that:

1) These chemicals don’t always work. Reviewers seem to be split on whether scrubbing was necessary.

Some people experienced that mysterious oven cleaning magic, but others definitely did not and had to resort to good old-fashioned physical labor to get their ovens clean.

2) Even if the chemicals do work, it’s not worth the risk to me. I definitely don’t want to fill my kitchen with fumes and chemicals, and then stick my head in the oven so I can breathe in a concentrated dose (at least not without a good gas mask!).

And if I probably have to scrub anyway, I might as well use a truly natural oven cleaner rather than expose my family to a bunch of dangerous chemicals.

In the end, I faced the fact that I hadn’t cleaned my oven in six long years–some scrubbing would be unavoidable. It was my penalty for serious oven neglect.

Luckily, it wasn’t as difficult as I thought.

3 Keys to Cleaning Your Oven with Natural Oven Cleaner

Want to learn how to clean your oven with natural oven cleaner? In my little oven cleaning adventure, I learned a few important keys for how to clean an oven (even an insanely dirty oven) in the easiest, least complicated way possible.

Here’s what you need:

1. The Right Prep

This is not a spray-and-wipe job. A little preparation is required, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Basically, you want to soak the grime into submission. An overnight soaking is probably your best bet–especially if you have years of baked on grease in your oven (like me!).

But for some folks a couple of hours might be enough to do the trick.

I found that using the right tools can turn oven cleaning into a relatively easy task.

Like I said, vinegar and baking soda didn’t cut it for my oven. But I wasn’t ready to give up on finding a natural oven cleaner that actually worked (and that was actually natural–a lot of the so-called “green” and “natural” cleaners out there still carry huge warning labels about not letting the stuff touch your skin, which is not exactly my idea of natural!).

I was told this cleaner was totally capable of cleaning my oven with absolutely no chemicals. Supposedly it’s some tough stuff. But I had my doubts.

Still, since this cleaner doesn’t come with a scary warning label, I decided it was worth a shot. I let it soak overnight to make sure I had a head start on the grime.

My doubts started leaving my mind when I saw this:

Yep, that’s six years worth of nasty oven grease literally melting into a pool of goo at the bottom of my oven.

Needless to say, I was more than a little impressed.

After some scrubbing (it really wasn’t as bad as I imagined), my oven ended up looking almost new:

No, I am not going to make crazy claims and say my oven actually looks brand new–it doesn’t.

I didn’t clean it for six years and the darn thing did a lot of baking during that time, so it’s not perfect. But I wasn’t looking for a fairytale oven, just a clean one.

PS: Other cleaners might do the job, but I can’t personally vouch for them. For me, this worked. If you want to try something else natural, I can only recommend looking for a soap-based product that comes from a company that cares. Soap is the best to battle grime and grease, and a company that cares — well, that one sort of explains itself.

Step by Step: How to Clean an Oven with Natural Oven Cleaner

1. Prep it. Remove any big baked on chunks of who-knows-what that might be hanging around the bottom of your oven. Then spray your oven with a 1:1 or 1:2 mixture of Thieves concentrated cleaner.

Give it a real good soak (I ended up using a whole 32-oz spray bottle of 1:1 concentration to tackle the six-year-old grime in my oven–you’ll probably be able to get away with a lot less!).

2. Soak it. Let the cleaner sit for at least 2 hours. For really filthy ovens (like mine) an overnight soak is going to help a lot. I sprayed mine down before bed and tackled the scrubbing part the next morning.

3. Get your tools. Have your gloves, scouring pads, cleaning brushes and washcloths ready to go.

4. Put on some tunes. Scrubbing is way more fun with music!

5. Get scrubbing. Time to get to work! Use your scouring pads to get the bulk of the grime, and your steel brush will take care of the sneaky grease stuck in the crevices.

6. Wipe down as needed. All that melted goo makes it tough to see what’s left to be cleaned. Wipe off the excess with a washcloth, rinse it out with warm water, and get back to scrubbing.

7. Intermission. Okay, you’ve been scrubbing for a little while and have got the main part done. But there’s still some tough, baked-on spots.

Give your oven one more spray down with your cleaner, and let it sit for 15 minutes while you enjoy a tall glass of iced tea and check your email.

8. Final wipe-down. Scrub any remaining tough spots. Give your oven one last misting with cleaner and wipe it down with a clean washcloth. Everything should be shiny clean!

Let’s Catch up: All the Free Stuff

Hello internet world!

Long time, no see…or write. Over the time that I have been absent, or more like, over the time that I can remember posting last, I have: moved to Lubbock TX (from College Station, TX), gotten my dream job as an autopsy technician, and I have met the love of my life, my boyfriend, Nick Travis.

It has been a year since I’ve been here, and everything is going great. I started my lease at the apartment May 10, 2019, Nick and I met on September 26, 2019 (on Tinder…another story for later), we were Facebook official on September 28, 2019, and we started living together in my apartment. The month of April 2020, during quarantine (another story to tell later), I moved our small stuff (Nick moved the big stuff) into the house we are living in now. It’s nice, technically a 3 bedroom 1 bath, out in the county. The best part? Its rent and utility free. ABSOLUTELY FREE. The worst part? Probably all the dirt that’s out there or maybe my commute (I went less than 5 minutes to work to about 20 minutes). I mean, we’re in between cotton fields, so…

Anyway, I have recently gained a new obsession! I have read (about to finish the 2nd) 2 books about living plastic free! Crazy to even think about doing, I know. However, a lot of people are doing it. Before I get too far ahead of myself, the books are called Life without Plastic and Plastic Free. They are actually pretty good and not just science-y facts. It really got me thinking that it’s possible to do! I mean, I know I’m looking at just the easy stuff, but I feel like I can do it. Nick is on board too, so we will be doing it together. My biggest problem will be personal care products and food items. I’m not sure I can give up my bottled shampoo, mostly the conditioner. I have curly hair for Pete’s sake! I have no idea if using bar shampoo and conditioner (which I just found out is a thing) will damage my hair or not. I guess we shall see because I just ordered bar shampoo and bar conditioner off of amazon. I will update how I feel about it when it arrives.

I also bought cloth napkins, a cloth table cloth (for the boys [included in the Tinder story]), stainless steel plates, stainless steel cups, stainless steel bowls, a stainless steel to go spork (it’s foldable!), a 2 pack of bamboo to go utensils, a 10 pack of reusable sandwich bags, and a soap saver for the shampoo and conditioner bars. After my reward points, it was a total of $205 and some change. It’s going to a good cause, right? I plan on trying to sell the plastic stuff on a Facebook garage sale page to hopefully make back some of the money….maybe $30. Anyway, I searched to buy all of this stuff off of amazon and made sure of its qualifications and all that, but I could’ve gotten it from these many sites: life without plastic, ECO-bags, Chicobag, ReUseIt, planet box, and lunch bots. These are just a few of the places that are referenced to in the books I’ve been reading.

So everyone says to start out going plastic free slowly. So, I have set a few goals for me to reach within the next few weeks: stainless steel/glass plates and drinkware (have/ordered), stainless steel pots and pans (expensive so I’ll get them eventually, but I LOVE my nonstick Pioneer Woman set), stainless steel water bottle (I literally just bought a 73 oz plastic bottle [SMH]), use my own to go containers (no Styrofoam) (next round of purchasing) , compost, recycle, shampoo and conditioner bars (bought), downsize plastic personal products (probs not happening). I’m going to clean out my kitchen cabinets this weekend and maybe I will get the other stuff in soon too. We shall see.

Something that I tried to start a while back was going zero waste. I’m going to try for it again. I would do pretty well besides to go food containers. However, I’m not drinking sodas much anymore, so that is cut down a lot. Here are my ideas for going zero waste: reusable napkins, reusable tablecloth, buy bulk, reusable water bottles, use towels instead of paper towels, no plastic utensils, paper plates, etc. All of these ideas correlate with Beth Terry’s actions in her Plastic Free book. She went down to like 1 point something pounds of garbage per year. PER YEAR. Some people even fit their yearly garbage in a mason jar! When the boys are at our house, we take out the garbage like 2x a week. When I lived alone, I took it out once every 2 weeks. We can work on it though.

Currently, we burn our garbage, since we live in the middle of nowhere. Which isn’t good for the environment either. The ashes leech into the ground and could contaminate groundwater. We have a well! There are so many environmental problems that we all contribute to that it makes me paranoid. In fact, paranoia runs my obsession with this, I think. Oh well, at least it’s working.

I recently tried doing the keto diet, before the quarantine. I felt great the first week, then I got bored while eating the same healthy foods over and over. I read the Dirty, Lazy, Keto books and it got me going. I even joined a group on Facebook to keep me accountable. Then quarantine happened and we couldn’t get many meats or vegetables with all of the shortages, so we just bought what we could to survive on. Nick made the comment that I was happier eating normal food versus keto… well duh. But we don’t want to see each other miserable so since quarantine has been over here (May 1) we’ve just been eating normal. HOWEVER. There is another way of eating I want to try. Sugar free. My mom did sugar free after she got food poisoning when I was in junior high and she lost a crap ton of weight. I figure if I cut out my sweets, the sprite and sweet tea, and try for fewer carbs (not stopping them), I might lose some weight. I gained 6 lbs over quarantine so I want to lose even more than I originally wanted.

My last goal is to set up a stable skin routine. Here’s the deal, I shower every other day (once again, I have curly hair), so I wash my face every other day. I know, gross. Get over it. I get really dry skin when I use my acne wash often. So yeah. I do have the Olay daily facials and I haven’t used many of them yet. My goal is to alternate between my Panoxyl face wash and my olay daily facials. And then continue using my toner and moisturizer as normal, which I do use after showers and it changed my skin when I started using it.

Well, I just wanted to catch up and write down my current goals. I want to blog more too because I’m bored at work, but every time I think about it, I get busy. I have more ideas to write about, so I will be here more often, Toodle-oo

The point is, we like to take credit when things are going well, and when they aren’t it’s much easier to point to an external factor outside of our control (or, in this case, an internal factor — namely, our metabolism). But when it comes to manipulating our metabolism, even the dirtiest, thirtiest of us have the power to take control of our bodies and start tipping the scales in the opposite direction. And, luckily for you, small changes can pack a powerful cumulative punch. Consider this your checklist.

1. Work Out (But Not Just With Any Workout)

Specifically, we’re talking about workouts that combine strength training with intense cardio intervals. “A combination of both will provide a great metabolism-boosting workout,” says Mahri Relin, founder of Body Conceptions, a results-focused personal training company with group fitness studios and personal trainers in New York City and Denver. “Cardio interval training burns lots of calories in the moment, while also increasing post-exercise oxygen consumption and metabolism for up to 24 hours afterwards.” Staying consistent will bring its own rewards, too: “Increasing muscle mass contributes to an increase in resting metabolism,” Relin says.

2. Don’t Sleep In

The real tip here is to get good sleep, but if you’re rolling out of bed as late as possible you’re killing your chances of getting to bed at a decent hour. “We all want to increase our metabolism, but skimping on sleep can result in an extra pound of weight gain for every two weeks, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” says Joey Thurman, author of 365 Health & Fitness Hacks That Could Save Your Life. (Even low-grade sleep deprivation can affect the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which are responsible for signaling hunger and satiation, respectively.) Aim for 7-9 hours, as recommended by the National Sleep Foundation, and then channel your innermost strength to resist whacking the snooze button. You’ve got this.

3. Drink Water

Elite athletes (see: Novak Djokovic) swear by drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning. There are a couple of benefits to doing this, most of which involve avoiding the negative effects associated with dehydration, including but not limited to physical and mental fatigue. It can work wonders for the metabolism, too. “Simply drinking water can optimize your body’s ability to burn fat by increasing your metabolic rate by up to 30 percent — an effect that can last for up to over an hour afterwards,” says Relin. Our suggestion to make this as easy as possible: Fill a bottle with water, leave it next to your bed, and chug it first thing in the morning. Then aim to fill it up three to four times over the course of the day.

4. Pop A Simple But Effective (And Safe) Energy Supplement

Energy supplements often get a bad rap, and usually for good reason; for one, they’re typically loaded with sugar and proprietary blends, and hard-to-pronounce ingredients make it difficult to tell what you’re actually getting. But there are good options out there, like GO, a clean, NSF-compliant vegan capsule containing just 14 ingredients. “When it comes to energy supplements, GO is one of the cleanest around, with some smart, natural ingredients to give you and your metabolism a running start,” says Jaimie Bailey, a New York City-based nutritionist and FlyWheel instructor. “Combined with your morning workout, it’ll keep you firing on all cylinders all day long.”

5. Eat A Meal

Think of your metabolism as the crank on a spin bike (the gear between the pedals). When you move your legs, the crank turns. But when you stop pedaling, it doesn’t stop abruptly — it keeps spinning for a while. “Eating in the morning activates the thermogenesis process, which stimulates your metabolism,” says Relin. “A 2013 study divided subjects into two groups and found that people in the group that ate the majority of their day’s calories in the morning lost more weight than those who got the bulk of their nutrition later in the day.” That’s not to say you should force-feed yourself half a day’s worth of food before leaving for work, but at least eat something to get the gears turning.

6. Take A Shot

It’s 2018, which means there’s a pretty good chance that by now you’ve heard at least one person extol the health benefits of taking a hearty swig of apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning. “When your body chemistry is too acidic, it can struggle to function as well as it should,” says Bailey. “We don’t absorb nutrients as well, digestion is less effective, and we’re less able to fight off diseases and illness. Apple cider vinegar has a long list of benefits, but when it comes to metabolism, it can be a game changer.” Pick up a bottle of ACV (what the cool kids are calling it these days) and stir up this quick morning tonic — a daily staple for Bailey — to help balance out your body’s PH levels and fire up your digestion:

6-8 oz warm water

2 tbsp raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar

½ tsp honey (optional)

7. Toggle Health Mode ON

Ever noticed how missing one workout often leads to missing the next one, too? Or how eating one unhealthy thing (or downing a few too many drinks) on a Friday can set you off on a downward spiral for an entire weekend? Well, it works both ways. The trick is to simply get started, no matter how small or insignificant the action might seem. “Whatever you do — whether it’s exercising, drinking water, or eating a healthy breakfast — it’s going to help set you in motion to engage in other healthy habits over the course of the day,” says Relin. “Start your healthy habits right away, and you’ll be more likely to be active and choose healthier foods that’ll in turn help support a faster metabolism.”

Bubble Birthday Bash

When our bubble loving girly was almost a two year old, a Bubble party was a no-brainer! From bubbles in the backyard to the Bubble Guppies cartoon, this girl couldn’t get enough of all things bubbles.

As we are planning our baby boy’s 1st birthday party this month, I decided I better catch you all up on our girl’s last two parties and all of the fun details to have your own bubble (and next, ice cream) themed party.

Pinterest, Amazon, and Etsy get sooo many clicks from me when I’m planning one of the kiddo’s parties. And, the bubble bash was no exception. I found the cutest bubble themed food label tent file on Etsy along with invitations and water bottle labels and had them printed locally at Katie & Co. Then, I used my high school doodling skills to make bubble letters for all of the food tents.

And, the colorful “Happy Birthday” bubble banner was a find from here (customized to the colors of the party) along with other printables listed at the bottom of this post.

The bubble theme was evident in every aspect of the party. From the food labels to bubble machines pumping out bubbles during the party to a Bubble Guppies bounce house to bubble solution in a kiddie pool with every bubble making option you could imagine!

For the blowup pool with bubble solution, we had this set of bubble wands (smaller ones) and these giant bubble wands for the kiddos to play with. In hindsight, I’d suggest that being an adult supervised activity at the party as my daughter and some of her friends ended up coated in bubble solution.

But, then again, its super memorable! (Word of mom advice after this party, always have extra clothes for your kiddo at bubble themed parties!)

For the colorful bubble party for our sweet girl, rose gold “2″s were the perfect find! The “2″ balloon and candle coordinated so well with the pastel and various shades of pink used throughout the party.

On the kids’ table, a fuchsia raised petal taffeta covering was a wonderful accent and background for the bubble cake made by Wink by Erica (a combination of cakes I saw on Pinterest). Those edible bubbles were amazing and beautiful!

For cupcakes, I ordered pink and white frosted cupcakes from Kroger (local grocery store) and we added bubble gum and other round candies in various colors & sizes to the tops to give the bubble look.

As has become a tradition for our girl’s birthdays, I worked with Esther from Cuteheads to create a custom, party-worthy dress for our big 2 year old! Esther found the cutest bubble print jersey fabric after I explained my vision and mixed it with a light pink jersey and blue for a comfortable, tiered, open-shoulder dress that our girl could play in all day.

When thinking about table decor for a bubble theme, I stumbled across sensory beads. I’d seen them used for children’s activities, but the colors and shape made for a perfect glass container filler for the tables! (And, bonus fun for after the party for weeks!)

Another lesson learned, be sure any container with the sensory beads in them have a top or filler (like flowers) to keep tiny hands out as a couple of little ones thought it was edible at first. (No children actually ate them, thankfully!)

Coordinating with the fuchsia taffeta table covering, the raised petals on these beautiful ivory taffeta tablecloths gave the bubble appearance in a sophisticated way. I will definitely use these tablecloths again and again for future parties. They even washed well in our washer and dryer and came out spotless after little hands covered in icing took their toll.

Bubble cookies from Wink by Erica were delicious and super cute! The colors coordinated perfectly and added a fun accent to the food table.

When thinking of popping bubbles, popcorn had to be on the food menu! So, our awesome nanny volunteered to make pink sprinkle popcorn that was aesthetically perfect AND delicious! Other bubble related food and drink items included bubbles to drink for the adults (prosecco), old school cheese balls (the orange cheetos like ones), and meatballs that we served in a crock pot.

I can’t complete this party post without acknowledging Photos by Kyle Weber and my husband’s tireless work to create things like the backdrop used for photos (seen in the first picture in this post). My wonderful husband bought the wood and built the backdrop on which I painted then added balloons for a colorful bubble background. We’ll use the backdrop over & over for parties and change up the accents (you’ll see how we used it for the Ice Cream themed party soon).

For Dry, Chapped Lips

Chapped Lips Remedy

Apply to the lips:

Chamomile 2 drops

Geranium 2 drops

Mix well with 2 teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel to help heal chapped lips.

Alternatively, use these oils as well: Eucalyptus, Rose, Sandalwood and Neroli.

How to Make Lanolin Lip Balm

1 tsp lanolin

1 tsp grated beeswax

1 tsp petroleum jelly

Melt the lanolin, wax, and petroleum jelly together over medium heat in a glass measuring cup in a pan of boiling water (water bath technique). Pour the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pillbox. Cool completely, until cool to the touch, approx. 20 minutes. Rub into lips and enjoy. Yields 1/2 oz.

DIY Chapped Lip Balm

General rule of thumb for winter chapped lips…basic lip balm recipe: melt together one ounce (by weight, not volume) of Beeswax preferably grated, it will melt faster), a ‘solid' fat…Shea Butter, mango butter, Coconut Oil, etc. and one oz of a rich liquid oil. (I like to use Avocado oil or Kukui Nut for this.)

This makes a basic soothing balm or salve that can be divided into smaller portions and/or enriched in innumerable ways. Use herbal infused oils (infused chamomile or Calendula) for skin soothing.

Chapped Lips Moisturizing Blend

Chamomile 3 drops

Sandalwood 2 drops

Flaxseed 1 teaspoon 5 (ml)

Apply Aloe Vera gel to your chapped lips before using this moisturizing formula.

Pink Pamper for Lips Recipe

This herb-infused pink lip balm will soothe and pamper your lips. Pure rose concrete add an unmistakable feminine aroma, and coupled with the kaolin, creates a smooth texture that goes on without a hitch. The pink color does not transfer to the lips.

6 grams St. John's Wort infused extra virgin olive oil

10 grams avocado butter

4 grams alkanet infused sweet almond oil

6 grams fractionated coconut oil

10 grams beeswax

a pea-sized amount rose concrete

a pea-sized amount kaolin (China clay)

Combine olive oil, avocado butter, fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil and beeswax in a heat proof measuring cup with a pour spout and place in a hot water bath. Once the beeswax has melted, remove from heat. Stir well. I use disposable pop sickle sticks to stir.

Add rose concrete and kaolin and stir again to ensure an even mix. Make sure the kaolin is completely broken up and dispersed. Pour into lip balm jars, tins or tubes and allow to cool before using.

How to Make Cocoa Mint Lip Balm

1T. + 1.5t. Sweet Almond Oil

1T. Beeswax Pastilles

1.5t. Shea Butter

1.5t. Cocoa Butter

8 Drops Peppermint EO

1 Vit. E Capsule (400iu)

Melt beeswax, then add and melt the butters. Let cool some, then add EO and Vit. E. Pour into lip balm tubes or tubs.

Lip Gloss Recipes

Naturally Delicious (and Simple) Lip Gloss Recipes

Chocolate Lip Gloss

1 1/2 teaspoons grated Cocoa Butter

1/2 teaspoon Coconut Oil

1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil

1/4 teaspoon grated milk chocolate

In a double boiler warm the Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, chocolate and Vitamin E Oil until melted. Pour into lip gloss container and allow to cool.

Aloe Vera Lip Gloss

1 tsp. Aloe Vera gel

1/2 tsp. Coconut Oil

1 tsp. petroleum jelly

Mix together in glass bowl and heat for 1 to 2 minutes on high in the microwave will yield about 1/2 ounce.

Coconut Lip Gloss

1 tsp. Coconut Oil

1 tsp. petroleum jelly

Same mixing and heating instructions as for the Aloe Vera Lip Gloss.

Coconut-Almond Lip Gloss

1 tsp. Coconut Oil

1 tsp. Almond oil

1/2 grated Beeswax

Same mixing and heating instructions apply as for the Aloe Vera Lip Gloss.

Colored Lip Gloss

This is an excellent way to use up lipstick that is too dark.

1 teaspoon grated Beeswax

1/2 teaspoon lipstick

1/2 teaspoon petroleum jelly

Melt the ingredients in a small can placed in boiling water. Stir it well and pour it into a small jar.

Apricot-Orange Lip Gloss

1 tsp Beeswax

1 tsp Apricot Kernel oil

1 tsp Calendula oil

3-4 drops of essential oil of Orange

Beet juice

Melt Beeswax in top of double boiler. Add Apricot Kernel and Calendula oils, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add beet juice if desired, for color. When partially cooled, add oil of Orange. Store in jar. Transfer a small portion to a purse sized container for use when away from home.

Vanilla Lip Gloss

1 tablespoon grated Beeswax

1 tablespoon Coconut Oil

1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil

1/8 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Place the Beeswax, Coconut Oil and Vitamin E Oil in an ovenproof container. Heat gently until the wax and oils are melted. Stir in the Vanilla extract and mix well. Pour the mixture into a clean container and allow to cool completely.

Sweet Lip Gloss

2 tsp Beeswax

1 tsp honey

7 tsp Castor Oil or Jojoba or sweet Almond oil

1/8 tsp. Flavor oil

Melt the oil and Beeswax together in pan over low heat until Beeswax is melted. Remove from stove, add honey and whisk. When the mixture is nearly cool add flavor oil, mix it up again and then pour into lip Balm container.

Since this comes out to be more like a gloss you can always add more Beeswax to it so that it is a little harder (about 1/2 tsp).

Cranberry Lip Gloss

1 tablespoon Almond oil

10 fresh Cranberries

1 teaspoon honey

1 teaspoon petroleum jelly (optional – for more shine)

Mix together all ingredients and place in a microwave or heat-resistant container. Heat in the microwave or a water bath until the mixture just begins to boil (1-2 minutes in the microwave). Stir well and gently mash the berries. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove all pieces of cranberry. Stir and allow to cool completely. When cool, spoon into a clean container.

To use: Spread a small amount onto your lips.

Lava Lamp Lip Gloss

6 Tablespoons Glycerin

50 Drops Lip Balm Flavoring

10 Drops Liquid Food Coloring

Mix together Glycerin, flavoring (I use green apple) and ordinary food coloring (I used red) in a small cup with a pour spout. Fill a roll-on lip gloss bottle about 1/4 with this mixture.

Fill remaining space in bottle with light oil such as sweet Almond oil. Be sure to leave a little room at the top to insert the roller ball assembly. I’ve heard that you can add a little mica or glitter, but I’ve also heard that it may clog the roller.

Citrus Lip Gloss Recipe

This make-it-yourself Citrus Lip Gloss tastes lick-your-lips delicious with both Tangerine and Lemon essential oils offering their benefits and flavors. Tangerine essential oil is a bit of an Aphrodisiac, so it is nice to wear out on a special date. The essential oils and honey combined make the gloss a tasty product that will keep your lips soft and moist for some time.

3 tablespoons sweet Almond oil

2 teaspoon Beeswax (pearls or solid Beeswax grated and measured)

1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel

1 teaspoon honey

800 IU Vitamin E

4 drops Lemon essential oil

3 drops Tangerine essential oil

Melt the Beeswax and sweet Almond oil together in a heat-proof container over boiling water. When the Beeswax is melted, remove from the heat. Add the honey and Vitamin E, mixing briskly with a wire whisk. Add the Aloe Vera gel and stir into the mixture. Add the essential oils and stir in well. Pour into a low wide-mouth jar.

Kiss Appeal Lip Mask

Kiss Appeal Lip Mask is soothing and is especially nice after warming it in the microwave about 10 seconds before using.

1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon kaolin (China clay) or other cosmetic clay (I do not recommend green clay because it is probably too drawing for delicate lips)

1 teaspoon emu oil

1 teaspoon honey

1 tablespoon rose hydrosol

Measure clay and set aside. Measure rose hydrosol and warm in the microwave about 20 seconds. Add emu oil to warm hydrosol and honey and stir well to incorporate. Add liquid mixture to clay and stir with a pop sickle stick to form a smooth paste. Use the popsicle stick to apply to lips and leave on for about 2 minutes, no more or it may dry your lips out. Rinse well with warm water, blot excess water gently and apply lip balm.

3 Natural DIY Lip Scrubs

While many people know of the importance of using a scrub on the skin of their face and body, they often forget about their lips. Your lips also need a good scrub, which removes dead skin cells and leaves behind soft, plump lips. The following lip scrubs are easy to make and use just a few simple natural ingredients.

Raspberry Lemonade Lip Scrub

This is a really fun lip scrub that you can make for yourself or give it to someone else as a gift. To turn it into a raspberry lemonade scrub, all you need is a single serving packet of drink mix in this flavor. If all you can find is strawberry lemonade, go ahead and use that!

Then you want to add some white table sugar, coconut oil, and essential oils you think compliment the scent. This can be lemon or another fruity essential oil. Combine them together and store in a small container.

Coconut and Sugar Lip Scrub

Another lip scrub that you can try out once again uses coconut oil, but it is going to use brown sugar instead of regular white sugar. This gives it a fun texture and flavor for your lips. With the coconut oil, make sure you are using organic, unrefined coconut oil.

This is the most natural form and will be best for moisturizing your lips. If you don’t have brown sugar, there is no reason you can’t use white sugar instead. Combine the ingredients and scrub your lips with the mixture, then rinse off. You can store the excess in an airtight container.

Lemon Lip Scrub

Lemon tends to be a favorite for most salt or sugar scrubs, including a nice lip scrub. The reason sugar is used for these scrubs is because if you have chapped lips, salt can be much too harsh. For the lemon lip scrub, use white table sugar with some lemon essential oil and a little coconut oil.
