minor barbie movie spoilers
it means a very lot to me that the big throwback song from the barbie movie is “closer to fine” by the indigo girls
so for those of you who don’t know cause this is kind of old queer lore, the indigo girls were this lesbian folk duo from the american south in the 80s and 90s
“closer to fine” is in general terms a song about coming to terms with your identity but of course it’s pretty much agreed on that it’s about coming to terms with your sexuality
so idk im just really excited that this very queer country folk song from a semi-obscure queer folk band who have not come up in the cultural conversation for a while is in the biggest blockbuster of the year being introduced to a new queer audience

can i just say the weird standard people try and hold queer romcoms(and queer media but) in general is so weird
its always "its too juvenile" and "its too wholesome" but then its "this is too sexualised" and apparently queer ppl having sex scenes is automatically "fetishizing". Always "too corny" "too angsty" and dont get me started on people who act like something has to be bad representation just because they didn't like it
"its cringey" it is a fucking romcom bro. like half of the appeal of a romcom is the kinda cringey fun of it all . not your thing? fine go watch something that is,not being the audience for something is fine but god stop acting like one romcom is gonna dismantle the movement for queer rights.

i call jackie a loser girlfailure so often because if i let myself face the affection i have for her it makes me sad. like what do you mean this girl who was so nice to everyone and who loved her best friend and her team and soccer and was excited to graduate high school and excited to go to college and excited to live her life died from hypothermia while feeling alone confused betrayed and abandoned. just because she didn't have what it takes to survive in the wilderness. the majority of people don't have what it takes, she was just the one that got unlucky enough to have to try. and she tried so hard it's heartbreaking, it was like watching an insect thrash in a spiderweb. her trying to reinvent her leadership but getting it all wrong, operating the woods like a high school that needs to have parties and dances and sleepovers. it was her unconscious escapism from having to face actually losing all that, and she had to die because of it. a seventeen year old girl died because she didn't want to trade dressing up painting nails and gossiping for the law of the jungle that was being forced on her. "she would have wanted that" they say as they eat her body and the truth is no, no she wouldn't have. she would be horrified and she would cry and sob if she knew what they did to her, because she was just a scared confused teenage girl and not a noble self-sacrificing hero or a patron saint
