Billionaire-proofing the internet
Tumblr media
Picks and Shovels is a new, standalone technothriller starring Marty Hench, my two-fisted, hard-fighting, tech-scam-busting forensic accountant. You can pre-order it on my latest Kickstarter, which features a brilliant audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.
Tumblr media
During the Napster wars, the record labels seriously pissed off millions of internet users when they sued over 19,000 music fans, mostly kids, but also grannies, old people, and dead people.
It's hard to overstate how badly the labels behaved. Like, there was the Swarthmore student who was the maintainer of a free/open source search engine that indexed files available in public sharepoints on the LAN. The labels sued him for millions and millions (the statutory damages for digital copyright infringement runs to $150,000 per file) and, when he begged for a settlement, said that they would accept his life's savings, but only if he changed majors and stopped studying Computer Science.
No, really.
What's more, none of the money the labels extracted from teenagers, grandparents (and the dead) went to artists. The labels just kept it all, while continuing to insist that they were doing all this because they wanted to "protect artists."
One thing everyone agreed on was how disgusted we all were with the labels. What we didn't agree on was what to do about it. A lot of us wanted to reform copyright – say, by creating a blanket license for internet music so that artists could get paid directly. This was the systemic approach.
Another group – call them the "individualists" – wanted a boycott. Just stop buying and listening to music from the major labels. Every dollar you spend with a label is being used to fund a campaign of legal terror. Merely enjoying popular music makes you part of the problem.
You can probably guess which group I was in. Leaving aside the futility of "voting with your wallet" (a rigged ballot that's always won by the people with the thickest wallet), I just thought this was bad tactics.
Here's what I would say when people told me we should all stop listening to popular music: "If members of your popular movement are not allowed to listen to popular music, your movement won't be very popular."
We weren't going to make political change by creating an impossible purity test ("Ew, you listen to music from a major label? God, what's wrong with you?"). I mean, for one thing, a lot of popular music is legitimately fantastic and makes peoples' lives better. Popular movements should strive to increase their members' joy, not demand their deprivation. Again, not merely because this is a nice thing to do for people, but also because it's good tactics to make participation in the thing you're trying to do as joyous as possible.
Which brings me to social media. The problem with social media is that the people we love and want to interact with are being held prisoner in walled gardens. The mechanism of their imprisonment is the "switching costs" of leaving. Our friends and communities are on bad social media networks because they love each other more than they hate Musk or Zuck. Leaving a social platform can cost you contact with family members in the country you emigrated from, a support group of people who share your rare disease, the customers or audience you rely on for your livelihood, or just the other parents organizing your kid's little league game.
Hypothetically, you could organize all these people to leave at once, go somewhere else, and re-establish all your social connections. Practically, the "collective action problem" of doing so is nearly insurmountable. This is what platform owners depend on – it's why they know they can enshittify their services without losing users. So long as the pain of using the service is lower than the pain of leaving it, the companies can turn the screws on users to make their lives worse in order to extract more profit from them. This is why Musk killed the block button and why Zuck fired all his moderators. Why bear the expense of doing something nice for users if they'll still stick around even if you cut a ton of headcount and/or expensive compute?
There's a way out of this, thankfully. When social media is federated, then you can leave a server without leaving your friends. Think of it as being similar to changing cell-phone companies. When you switch from Verizon to T-Mobile, you keep your number, you keep your address book and you keep your friends, who won't even know you switched networks unless you tell them:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/29/how-to-leave-dying-social-media-platforms/
There's no reason social media couldn't work this way. You should be able to leave Facebook or Twitter for Mastodon, Bluesky, or any other service and still talk with the people you left behind, provided they still want to talk with you:
https://www.eff.org/interoperablefacebook
That's how the Fediverse – which Mastodon is part of – works already. You can switch from one Mastodon server to another, and all the people you follow and who follow you will just move over to that new server. That means that if the person or company or group running your server goes sour, you aren't stuck making a choice between the people you love who connect to you on that server, and the pain of dealing with whatever bullshit the management is throwing off:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/23/semipermeable-membranes/#free-as-in-puppies
We could make that stronger! Data protection laws like the EU's GDPR and California's CCPA create a legal duty for online services to hand over your data on demand. Arguably, these laws already require your Mastodon server's management to give you the files you need to switch from one server to another, but that could be clarified. Handing these files over to users on demand is really straightforward – even a volunteer running a small server for a few friends will have no trouble living up to this obligation. It's literally just a minute's work for each user.
Another way to make this stronger is through governance. Many of the great services that defined the old, good internet were run by "benevolent dictators for life." This worked well, but failed so badly. Even if the dictator for life stayed benevolent, that didn't make them infallible. The problem of a dictatorship isn't just malice – it's also human frailty. For a service to remain good over long timescales, it needs accountable, responsive governance. That's why all the most successful BDFL services (like Wikipedia) transitioned to community-managed systems:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/12/10/bdfl/#high-on-your-own-supply
There, too, Mastodon shines. Mastodon's founder Eugen Rochko has just explicitly abjured his role as "ultimate decision-maker" and handed management over to a nonprofit:
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/01/mastodon-becomes-nonprofit-to-make-sure-its-never-ruined-by-billionaire-ceo/
I love using Mastodon and I have a lot of hope for its future. I wish I was as happy with Bluesky, which was founded with the promise of federation, and which uses a clever naming scheme that makes it even harder for server owners to usurp your identity. But while Bluesky has added many, many technically impressive features, they haven't delivered on the long-promised federation:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/ulysses-pact/#tie-yourself-to-a-federated-mast
Bluesky sure seems like a lot of fun! They've pulled tens of millions of users over from other systems, and by all accounts, they've all having a great time. The problem is that without federation, all those users are vulnerable to bad decisions by management (perhaps under pressure from the company's investors) or by a change in management (perhaps instigated by investors if the current management refuses to institute extractive measures that are good for the investors but bad for the users). Federation is to social media what fire-exits are to nightclubs: a way for people to escape if the party turns deadly:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/12/14/fire-exits/#graceful-failure-modes
So what's the answer? Well, around Mastodon, you'll hear a refrain that reminds me a lot of the Napster wars: "People who are enjoying themselves on Bluesky are wrong to do so, because it's not federated and the only server you can use is run by a VC-backed for-profit. They should all leave that great party – there's no fire exits!"
This is the social media version of "To be in our movement, you have to stop listening to popular music." Sure, those people shouldn't be crammed into a nightclub that has no fire exits. But thankfully, there is an alternative to being the kind of scold who demands that people leave a great party, and being the kind of callous person who lets tens of millions of people continue to risk their lives by being stuck in a fire-trap.
We can install our own fire-exits in Bluesky.
Yesterday, an initiative called "Free Our Feeds" launched, with a set of goals for "billionaire-proofing" social media. One of those goals is to add the long-delayed federation to Bluesky. I'm one of the inaugural endorsers for this, because installing fire exits for Bluesky isn't just the right thing to do, it's also good tactics:
https://freeourfeeds.com/
Here's why: if a body independent of the Bluesky corporation implements its federation services, then we ensure that its fire exits are beyond the control of its VCs. That means that if they are ever tempted in future to brick up the fire-exits, they won't be able to. This isn't a hypothetical risk. When businesses start to enshittify their services, they fully commit themselves to blocking anything that makes it easy to leave those services.
That's why Apple went so hard after Beeper Plus, a service that enhanced iMessage's security by making conversations between Apple and Android users as private as chats that were confined to Apple users:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/07/blue-bubbles-for-all/#never-underestimate-the-determination-of-a-kid-who-is-time-rich-and-cash-poor
It's why Elon Musk periodically freaks out and suspends users who list their Mastodon userids in their Twitter bios:
https://techcrunch.com/2022/12/15/elon-musk-suspends-mastodon-twitter-account-over-elonjet-tracking/
And it's why Meta will suspend your account if you link to Pixelfed, a Fediverse-based alternative to Instagram:
https://www.404media.co/meta-is-blocking-links-to-decentralized-instagram-competitor-pixelfed/
Once upon a time, we had a solid way of overcoming the problem of lock-in. We'd reverse-engineer a proprietary system and make a free, open alternative. We've been hacking fire exits into walled gardens since the Usenet days, with the creation of the alt.* hierarchy:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/11/altinteroperabilityadversarial
When the corporate owners of Unix started getting all weird about source-code access and user-modifiability, we didn't insist that Unix users were bad people for sticking with a corporate OS. We reverse-engineered Unix and set all those users free:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Project
The answer to Microsoft's proprietary SMB network protocol wasn't a campaign to shame people for having SMB running on their LANs. It was reverse-engineering SMB and making SAMBA, which is now in every single device in your home and office, and it's gloriously free as in speech and free as in beer:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/07/samba-versus-smb-adversarial-interoperability-judo-network-effects
In the years since, a thicket of laws we colloquially call "IP" has grown up around services and products, and people have literally forgotten that there is an alternative to wheedling people to endure the pain of leaving a proprietary system for a free one. IP has put the imaginations of people who dream of a free internet in chains.
We can do better than begging people to leave a party they're enjoying; we can install our own fucking fire exits. Sure, maybe that means that a lot of those users will stay on the proprietary platform, but at least we'll have given them a way to leave if things go horribly wrong.
After all, there's no virtue in software freedom. The only thing worth caring about is human freedom. The only reason to value software freedom is if it sets humans free.
If I had my way, all those people enjoying themselves on Bluesky would come and enjoy themselves in the Fediverse. But I'm not a purist. If there's a way to use Bluesky without locking myself to the platform, I will join the party there in a hot second. And if there's a way to join the Bluesky party from the Fediverse, then goddamn I will party my ass off.

MRS & MRS O'CONNELL
fbi agent! billie x international spy! reader
through the hushed tones on the phone and back and forth whispering lay a unsuspecting tideous house in the suburbs of los angeles. the streets were awfully peaceful only disrupted by the little giggles of little kids on one house's backyard and the water sprinkler nurturing the flowers. the two mistress's of the house eased into their own work.
you pranced around the house with an apron on and some kitten heels clicking on the marble floors with a high sharp ponytail as you worked your way around the kitchen preparing dinner. your dark eyes narrowed as billie's figure made it's way out of her study.
carefully like a feline creature they traced her state of being. the way one hand found it's way in the pocket of her work slacks with another messing up her dark hair in a lazy excuse of a low ponytail. her white collared shirt was messy her tie long gone and a few buttons opened.
''I'm having somebody over in a sec-'' before she could even finish her sentence the bell door ringed alarming you as you quickly shifted your eyes towards the door with an arched brow.
''are they staying over ?'' you questioned your eyes moving back to her just as fast. her oceanic eyes lingered on yours for a minute before she shook her head as her answer before she approached the door.
the door swung open as the stranger with a familiar voice came into the house shoes noticeably staying on already knowing who it was, your nose scrunched in disapproval. billie smelt your disapproval before she could even see it on your face but she shrugged it off this was a work thing anyways he'd be out of here in a matter of minutes.
a small greeting was shared between billie's director in office and you of-course with your eyes scanning his feet focused on the shoes he's walked everywhere in all to discard the dirt in your house. a small smile here and small talk there just enough for billie to successfully drag him down the hallway back into her study and shut the door behind her.
you turned around taking the meal out of the oven placing it on the kitchen counter to let it cool before your phone rings. not your ordinary smartphone but the small digital flip phone placed on your gaiters vibrating against your thigh. you quickly pulled up your skirt revealing the device lighting up before you grabbed it to answer.
'' los angeles on the line'' you quoted one of the rules of answering any calls coming from this device.
''the break-in at headquarters was identified... '' the female voice on the other end of the call announced but her voice faded nearing the end which was unusual. normally the calls were straight forward especially if it was for emergencies.
'' I'm listening...'' you informed taking off your shoes before wandering away from the kitchen to some place isolated and far from billie.
'' individual was identified through forensics by the sample left over at the scene of the break-in as female'' your ears perked immediately at that notation. your heart rate was faster than usual clearly a sign of fearing the unknown or maybe confirmation to something you already suspected.
''blue eyes , height of five feet ten , dark hair, white as of race, an identified fbi agent... you don't need me to continue do you ?''the voice over the call that belonged to your longtime sort of assistant sometimes blurring the line into a friendship.
last week an attempted break-in occurred in one of the headquarters in los angeles by some undetected , at the time, person. you were immediately called in for work and left billie with the lame excuse of getting some groceries for the house at a specific place because of the quality. when you got there it was chaos with protocols being activated right after being triggered to ensure that nobody actually infiltrated the building.
the only good thing about that day was the fact that some blood was shed by the perpetrator after they got slightly stabbed by security. you saw the footage and the way they fought it all looked too familiar even with the attempted coverage but you pushed the gut feeling down. you didn't want it to be her.
even when you got back home that evening billie wasn't home and when you called her assistant he blabbered about her being possibly hurt from a work mission. upon seeing her it kind of all came together because her stab wound being in the same exact place wasn't a coincidence.
''you knew it was her right. you never miss these you have a gift for it'' she confirmed before a small laughter echoed before she turned the line off.
''baby, you okay ?'' billie called out from afar looking at you from the other end of the house. on instinct your phone moved away from your ear being fisted by your hand as you hid it behind your back before swaying to face her. a forced smile on your face as you met her piercing eyes before nodding with a small affirmative answer.
your feet quickly walked towards her your eyes on hers with every step you took as if trying to assess if she knew anything about you like you did with her. her eyes were too neutral for her to not know anything and the way they raked over you like you were under inspection rather than being admired gave it all away.
she knew something

Field Trips & Foot Chases
Pairing: OA Zidan x Wife!FBI!Reader
Word Count: ~6,000
Genre: Action, Romance, Domestic, Humor
Setting: FBI HQ & NYC Historical Museum
Tumblr media
---
The elevator doors slid open with a familiar ding as Y/N Zidan stepped out onto the floor of the FBI New York office, her steps confident and brisk. It was barely 7:15 in the morning, and most of the city was still stirring awake, but inside these walls, the machine was already running. She clutched a file folder in one hand—yesterday’s case summary, neatly printed and signed—and her travel mug in the other, steam rising from the dark roast she desperately needed to survive the next twelve hours.
Dressed in slim black trousers and a camel-toned coat that still smelled faintly of OA’s cologne from where it had brushed against his earlier, Y/N’s look was a balance of business-formal and “mom-on-a-mission.” She didn’t plan to be here long. Just long enough to hand off the file to Isobel and print the necessary attachments. Then it was off to chaperone Talia and Harlow’s first-grade field trip to the New York Historical Museum.
Her twin daughters had been buzzing about it all week—especially Harlow, who’d told everyone in their household (including the dog) that she was going to “see real colonial shoes” and “eat a sandwich like George Washington.” Y/N smiled to herself at the thought.
She turned the corner into the bullpen, where the usual early birds were already around. Tiffany was poring over some digital forensics with a very large cup of coffee, while Scola looked like he was mid-rant about parking tickets to anyone who’d listen.
“Zidan!” Maggie Bell called from across the room. She stood, her coat half-off her shoulders, and crossed the floor with a grin. “What are you doing here? Thought you were playing hooky today.”
Y/N returned the smile and held up her folder like a trophy. “Just dropping off paperwork for Isobel and printing a few things. School trip starts at eight-thirty. I’m still on the clock for ‘Mom Duty.’”
“Right—the big museum day.” Maggie leaned on the edge of her desk. “Please, I need pictures. You know I live for updates on my goddaughters.”
“I’ll flood your phone with them,” Y/N promised with a laugh. “You’ll be sick of them by lunchtime.”
“Impossible.”
Just then, footsteps approached, and OA appeared from the direction of the elevator, hair still damp from the shower and shirt sleeves rolled to the elbows. He had the distinct look of a man who had tried to leave early and been waylaid by something critical—his tie hung loosely around his neck.
“Hey,” he said, smile softening the edge of his focused gaze when he saw her. “I thought you’d be at the school already.”
“I wanted to make sure the case was buttoned up,” Y/N said, handing over the rest of the folder to Isobel who had just joined them. “And someone has to keep the system running while the rest of you run off chasing bad guys.”
OA leaned down and kissed her quickly—chaste but warm. “You’re amazing. Have fun with the girls.”
“You know I will. Just don’t get tackled or shot while I’m gone.”
“I could say the same to you,” he teased, stepping back just as Isobel raised her voice.
“Team, let’s go—conference room, now,” Isobel called. She was already walking fast, the others grabbing tablets and folders in response.
Y/N glanced at the wave of motion like a tide rising behind her, then gave Maggie a wink. “And that’s my cue to leave.”
“Send me those pictures!”
“You’ll get a whole album,” she promised, waving goodbye to the team as they moved into their briefing.
---
The school courtyard was buzzing with six-year-olds and coffee-wielding parents when Y/N arrived, switching gears from “Agent” to “Mom” without missing a beat. She spotted Talia and Harlow immediately—Talia in a navy-blue peacoat and matching headband, Harlow in her trademark rainbow beanie and pink boots, a stark contrast of order and chaos that defined them perfectly.
“Mommy!” they cried in unison, bolting toward her. Y/N crouched down just in time to catch them both in her arms.
“Hey, my sweet girls,” she said, kissing each of their cheeks. “Are you ready to learn all about history and revolution and maybe meet a statue of Ben Franklin?”
“Only if he has the kite!” Harlow declared.
“I want to see the old-fashioned classroom!” Talia added.
Their teacher, Miss Reyes, smiled warmly as Y/N joined the parent volunteers. “Glad to have you with us today, Mrs. Zidan. The girls have been so excited.”
“Thanks for letting me come. I wouldn’t miss it.”
The bus ride was a whirlwind of snack-sharing, knock-knock jokes, and a surprisingly intense game of “I Spy.” Y/N sat with the girls, pointing out landmarks and helping explain the difference between colonial homes and “olden castles.”
By midmorning, they were inside the museum, walking through exhibits of Revolutionary War uniforms, artifacts, and models of early New York life. The twins held onto her hands tightly, wide-eyed and full of questions. Y/N took photos throughout, even getting a perfect candid of Talia peering into a replica hearth and Harlow dramatically posing with a tri-corner hat.
She sent a few to Maggie, who replied instantly:
Maggie: LOOK AT MY BABIES. That hat!! Why does Harlow look like she’s about to lead a rebellion?!
Y/N: Because she probably is.
The group finished the final stretch of the tour—crossing a grand marble hallway with columns and a huge exit foyer where the buses waited outside in the sun. The kids were energized, talking about muskets and old coins.
And that’s when Talia froze.
“Mommy… is that Daddy?”
Y/N’s head snapped up.
Outside the tall glass doors, two figures in dark suits were sprinting across the plaza, weaving between pedestrians. One of them was OA—her husband—his badge out, gun holstered, eyes locked on two suspects making a break for it.
Next to him? Maggie, determined as ever.
“Oh no,” Y/N whispered, eyes narrowing.
One suspect veered toward a side alley. OA followed without hesitation and tackled him hard to the ground, knee to his back, cuffs already in hand.
The second suspect bolted toward the museum steps.
Y/N’s protective instincts kicked in. “Miss Reyes, get the kids on the bus. Now.”
The teacher didn’t ask questions. Y/N was already moving.
She sprinted across the marble floor and out into the courtyard, intercepting the second suspect as he reached the sidewalk. Timing it just right, she shifted her weight, stuck her foot out, and caught him mid-stride.
He stumbled—hard—crashing to the pavement. Before he could recover, she was on him, knee pressing down, one hand on her spare cuffs clipped inside her purse.
“Federal agent,” she said calmly. “Stay down.”
Behind her, the tour bus erupted into cheers.
When OA came jogging up, dragging his suspect with him, he burst out laughing at the sight of his wife expertly cuffing the guy in front of a group of cheering first graders.
Maggie leaned over, catching her breath. “Okay, remind me never to underestimate you in ballet flats.”
“Noted,” Y/N said dryly.
They both looked toward the bus. Talia and Harlow were standing in the window, saluting with both hands, beaming.
Maggie nearly doubled over laughing. “You two have the coolest kids.”
“I’ll take that as a win.”
---
The suspects were booked within the hour. Y/N filed a witness statement while Maggie handled the rest. OA offered her a ride, but she waved him off.
“I’ve still got sandwiches to eat and juice boxes to open,” she said, kissing him on the cheek. “We’ll meet you later.”
By the time the girls were home from school, OA pulled into the driveway with a soft smile and two bags of cookies from the café down the street. The twins ran into his arms, talking over each other.
“Daddy, we saw you run so fast!”
“You tackled a real bad guy!”
“And Mommy kicked one!”
They all laughed as they went inside, collapsing onto the couch in a tangle of limbs and warmth.
Over dinner, the girls retold the museum adventure five times, dramatically acting out the takedown. OA and Y/N exchanged loving, amused glances. Their lives were never normal, but they were perfect in their chaos.
Later, after bath time, the family curled up in the twins’ bedroom for storytime. OA read from a picture book while Y/N braided Talia’s hair.
“And then the agent said, ‘Not today, criminal!’ and kicked him right in the shin—”
“That’s what Mommy did!” Harlow squealed.
Eventually, the girls drifted off to sleep, their hands still tucked in their parents’. OA carried Harlow to her bed while Y/N kissed Talia’s forehead, brushing a curl from her eyes.
They met in the hallway outside, quiet finally descending.
“She’s right, you know,” OA whispered, arms slipping around Y/N’s waist. “You did look kind of cool out there.”
“I don’t need to impress a bunch of six-year-olds,” she teased, kissing his jaw. “Just you.”
“Well,” he said, leaning in, “consider me impressed.”
They smiled, wrapped in the comfort of the night, hearts full.
Together, they walked into their bedroom, knowing tomorrow would bring more cases, more chaos—but for tonight, they had peace.
And maybe, just maybe, their daughters would dream of saving the world—just like their parents.
---
The End.

I work in digital forensics for my country's government. As a result, I see a lot of CSEM. And I feel dirty afterwards, which makes me feel gross entering the synagogue. Something about the hard cognitive shift between looking at some of the worst things human beings can do to one another and thinking about anything good and holy feels disorienting. I used to go to the mikveh when I lived in a city that had one, and that helped a lot. Now that I live where I don't have access to one, it's hard to get through this weird psychological block. I talked to my rabbi and he genuinely did not have a suggestion and said he'd need to think about it, since I'm the first person he's known who works in this field. Which is totally fine - I definitely prefer a well thought-out answer to a bad on-the-spot one - but I guess I was just wondering what other Jewish people do when what you've seen becomes impossible to stop thinking about or what you do to reset your mind? I am scheduled for a therapy appointment in a few weeks but I want to see if maybe someone else who's also seen some heinous things has a more Jewish approach to getting through this. (FOR: I was raised Orthodox, currently attend a Reform synagogue.)

2025 Supported Org: Bellingcat
Over the past two decades, the American public’s faith in mainstream news organizations has dropped precipitously – in a 2023 Gallup survey, more than half of respondents indicated that they believe news organizations actively mislead the public. The major organs of mainstream media have made many choices that have cost them the public’s trust, often relying on the “both sides” model of reporting at the expense of a full and truthful picture and treating politics as a horse race.
But these organizations are also under significant pressure as they struggle to adapt to the radical technological shifts in our media environment. These shifts have cut into traditional revenue streams, driving news organizations toward the sort of reporting that will generate revenue. They have also created both the possibility of and the need for new approaches to reporting, and many legacy news outlets have struggled to adapt.
Tumblr media
Bellingcat is an independent investigative collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists that uses cutting-edge technology to engage in fact-checking and open-source intelligence investigation outside the apparatus of major journalistic publications. In addition to doing their own reporting, Bellingcat designs and shares verifiable methods of ethical digital investigation. By publishing walkthroughs to open source research methods and holding tailored training sessions on their use for journalists, human rights activists, and members of the public, they’re broadening the scope and application of open source research. Their research is regularly referenced by international media and has been cited by several courts and investigative missions.
Operating in a unique field where advanced technology, forensic research, journalism, transparency and accountability come together, Bellingcat believes in the need for collaboration and has partnered with news organisations across the globe. Likewise, Bellingcat’s Global Authentication Project (GAP) seeks to harness the power of the open source community by nurturing and encouraging a network of volunteer investigators. Their Justice & Accountability unit, meanwhile, seeks to demonstrate the viability of online open source information in judicial processes.
You can support Bellingcat as a creator in the 2025 FTH auction (or as a bidder, when the time comes to donate for the auctions you’ve won.)

id like to know more about your current work and career as an anthropologist. where did you graduate from? what field of study did you focus on? what do you think about the current compartmentalization of the field of anthropology in the US today, removing it from a formerly holistic approach to a more 'separated' and corporate model? are you currently following anthropological news? if so, what region do you have an interest in?
I can't help but feel as though I'm being interrogated right now, but sure I'll answer:
I studied at Doshisha University in Kyoto for 3 years, before withdrawing due to isolation brought on my the pandemic. (bad choice to live across the ocean from your family when you also cant go outside)
I studied cultural and linguistic anthropology, as well as communicative philosophy (which I don't talk about as often because talking about philosophy is exhausting most of the time)
I really don't know what you're talking about here because anthropology is a massive field with a lot of different subsects, and I've noticed no shifts or changes to or from whatever you're calling a "holistic approach" or "corporate model". A holistic approach to what? Cultural anthropology? Biological anthropology? Linguistic? Forensic? Digital? And to what end? In theory? In construction of ethnography? Field work? Bankrolling study? You've said several pretty vague things in this part.
I'm not currently enrolled in any formal academic institution and so I'm not up-to-the-day on a lot of anthropological news, especially since most of my work doesn't demand that I do. That said, I do have a couple of news feeds from various countries I've studied like Japan, and still read ethnographies that catch my interest from time to time. Aside from that, most of my learning is habitually passive instead of active.

The difference began immediately at the first point of contact. Many companies in the digital asset recovery space treat clients as case numbers rather than individuals, but Astraweb prides itself on a profoundly human approach. From the moment Jane connected with their team, she was met with calm professionalism and empathetic understanding. Astraweb’s experts didn’t just collect the basic facts of her situation; they invested time in learning about her unique concerns, fears, and goals.
This personalized attention is critical. Financial loss, especially in the volatile cryptocurrency market, is not just about money it’s deeply tied to emotional well-being and future security. By acknowledging Jane’s distress and validating her fears, Astraweb’s team immediately alleviated much of her initial panic. They reassured her that despite the challenging circumstances, recovery was possible and that Astraweb would support her every step of the way. This empathetic approach planted the seeds of hope and trust that would sustain Jane through the recovery process.
Transparency and Clear Communication: Building Trust Through Every Step
One of the cornerstones of Astraweb’s client-centered methodology is transparency. Jane was kept fully informed from the outset, with the team providing clear, jargon-free explanations of the entire recovery process. Rather than leaving her uncertain or confused, Astraweb made sure she understood each step, from preliminary case assessment to the complex asset tracing and retrieval efforts ahead.
Regular, timely updates ensured that Jane never felt left in the dark. She received progress reports outlining milestones achieved, any obstacles encountered, and the strategies planned moving forward. This ongoing dialogue was more than just information sharing it was a partnership. Jane had the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and engage actively in decision-making. Astraweb’s responsiveness and clarity gave her a sense of control and confidence, which is often lacking when facing financial recovery situations
Tumblr media
Strategic Action and Efficient Recovery: Delivering Results with Precision and Care
With a thorough plan in place, Astraweb’s team mobilized swiftly and efficiently. Their approach was methodical and tailored to Jane’s specific case. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and deep expertise in blockchain analysis and digital forensics, they navigated the complexities inherent in cryptocurrency recovery.
What sets Astraweb apart is not only their technical prowess but also their commitment to aligning every action with the client’s best interests. For Jane, this meant careful management of sensitive data and continuous coordination to ensure all efforts supported her recovery goals. The team’s professionalism was evident in their precision and tenacity, persistently pursuing leads and unraveling the often opaque paths that digital assets can take.
Over time, their dedication paid off. Astraweb successfully recovered a significant portion of Jane’s lost funds. This achievement was more than just a financial victory it was a powerful restoration of Jane’s peace of mind and future stability.
Final Steps: Restoring Financial Security and Empowering Confidence
When Jane received the final recovery statement, the relief and gratitude she experienced were profound. Astraweb’s seamless process had not only restored her financial security but also transformed a traumatic event into a story of empowerment. The client-centered approach meant Jane never felt like a passive bystander; instead, she was an informed, engaged partner in reclaiming her assets.
Beyond the monetary recovery, Jane gained something invaluable a renewed sense of control over her financial destiny. Astraweb’s dedication to transparent communication and compassionate case management helped her move past fear and uncertainty. She emerged with greater knowledge of digital asset management and an increased ability to face future financial challenges with confidence and clarity.
Tumblr media
Astraweb’s Commitment: More Than Recovery, A Partnership
Jane’s story illustrates the core philosophy that drives Astraweb’s work: every client deserves more than just technical recovery services they deserve empathy, clarity, and partnership. The company understands that behind every lost asset is a person’s hopes, dreams, and security at stake.
For those facing the daunting prospect of lost cryptocurrency or other digital assets, Astraweb’s process offers a path forward. From Deceived to Delivered: Romance Scam Victim Recovers Crypto Assets
Tumblr media
When Martha Wineston., a 61-year-old retired school administrator from Nevada, first received a kind message on social media, she had no idea it would lead to a devastating financial loss and ultimately, an extraordinary recovery. Over the span of five months, Martha fell victim to a sophisticated romance scam that drained her of $42,000 in Bitcoin savings she had set aside for her grandchildren’s education and her own financial security.
“I felt embarrassed, but more than that I felt hopeless,” Martha said. “It wasn’t just the money. It was the betrayal, the shame of being deceived.”
Romance scams are a growing threat in the digital age, particularly among older adults. What makes them especially painful is not just the financial damage, but the emotional manipulation involved.
At her lowest point, Martha confided in a friend, who referred her to Astraweb a digital asset recovery firm that specializes in tracing stolen cryptocurrency and digital fraud cases.
Astraweb’s Forensic Approach Astraweb’s team began by analyzing the transaction data from Martha’s wallet. What they found was a sophisticated laundering trail involving cryptocurrency tumblers, cross-border transfers, and decentralized exchanges
Tumblr media
A scam like this is designed to make tracing the funds virtually impossible,” explained Jordan Kumar, lead analyst at Astraweb. “But the blockchain, while anonymous, is also permanent. If you know how to read it, you can follow the breadcrumbs.”
Using cutting-edge blockchain forensics tools and strategic collaboration with international crypto exchanges, Astraweb traced the funds through multiple layers of obfuscation. Within 72 hours, they were able to recover a significant portion of Martha’s lost Bitcoin.
A Message for Victims: There Is Help Martha’s story is both a cautionary tale and a source of hope. Too often, victims remain silent out of fear or shame. But digital fraud is a crime and it can be fought.
Many people wrongly believe that once cryptocurrency is gone, it’s gone forever. That’s not always the case. We’ve recovered funds even from highly complex scams.
Martha now shares her experience to encourage others not to give up. She volunteers with a support group for scam victims and has become an advocate for digital literacy and fraud prevention.
Tumblr media
A New Era of Digital Accountability As cryptocurrency continues to shape the global economy, the demand for digital justice grows. Services like Astraweb are proving that even in the decentralized world of blockchain, accountability is possible.
For those affected by crypto scams, time is critical. Fast reporting and expert help can make the difference between permanent loss and possible recovery.

Authorities in France arrested Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram, on Saturday, sparking a public controversy over online speech, encryption, and digital rights as well as a potential diplomatic fallout in Europe.
Prosecutors in Paris released a list of charges against a “person unnamed” in a criminal investigation in connection with which Durov is being questioned. Those charges include possession of child pornography, money laundering, and association with organized crime. Durov has not been charged but is being detained and questioned; French authorities can keep Durov in custody until Wednesday, at which time they must either release him or charge him with a crime.
Telegram struck a defiant tone in a statement posted to its platform Sunday, saying that its moderation policies were in line with industry standards “and constantly improving” while adding that Durov had “nothing to hide.”
“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” the company said.
Durov, who founded Telegram in 2013 in his native Russia, has long styled himself as a champion of unfettered free speech online. The platform has adopted a lighter-touch approach to content moderation than many of its social media peers, even as it has grown to nearly a billion global users.
“Unless they cross red lines, I don’t think that we should be policing people in the way they express themselves,” Durov told the Financial Times in a rare interview in March this year, saying the platform planned to improve its content moderation without elaborating on what he considers a red line.
In another interview in April with right-wing media personality Tucker Carlson, Durov said the company would cooperate with “legitimate” demands to take down content.
“If there was a group of people who were promoting violence, there was terrorist activity that was spreading violence in some parts of the world, publicly posting things that any decent human being would disallow or wouldn’t want to be posted, we would help them,” he said. “But in some other cases where we thought it would be crossing the line, it wouldn’t be in line with our values of freedom of speech and protecting people’s private correspondence, we would ignore those.”
That approach has seen Telegram being used by protesters and dissidents around the world as well as the authoritarian governments they are often fighting against, and it has become a leading source of information and intelligence in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Despite Russia’s historical baggage with Durov and Telegram (the Russian government unsuccessfully tried to ban the app in 2018), the country’s military has become dependent on the app for battlefield communication as well as propaganda in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “In the last two years of the war, no platform has played a greater role in helping us get insight into Russian thinking about the war than Telegram,” said Eto Buziashvili, a Tbilisi, Georgia-based researcher with the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab.
Multiple Russian officials have expressed outrage at Durov’s detention. Unless France provides strong evidence to back up its claims, “we are witnessing a direct attempt to restrict freedom of communication and, one might even say, direct intimidation of the head of a large company,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a briefing on Tuesday, adding that Moscow is “ready to provide all necessary assistance and support” to Durov.
Durov’s arrest was also slammed by X owner and fellow tech billionaire Elon Musk—who has espoused a similarly unbridled approach to online speech and is engaged in his own content moderation fight against European authorities—as well as former U.S. National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, who called it “an assault on the basic human rights of speech and association.”
French President Emmanuel Macron sought to quell accusations of government censorship on Monday, pushing back in a post on X against what he referred to as “false information” about Durov’s arrest. “The arrest of the president of Telegram on French soil took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation,” Macron wrote. “It is in no way a political decision.” He also added that France remained “deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship.”
Both Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have requested consular access to Durov. Durov is a citizen of both countries as well as France. A spokesperson for the UAE foreign ministry said the country is “closely following” his case.
Durov has a complicated relationship with Russia, having fled the country in 2014 after refusing (in his own telling) to share data from VK—another hugely popular social network that he founded—with the Russian government. He sold his stake in VK and eventually moved to Dubai, where he has largely been based since and where Telegram is now located.
But the geopolitical implications of Durov’s arrest go beyond his citizenships. Countries around the world, particularly in Europe, have been grappling with how to regulate social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok, attempting to draw the line between free expression and illegal content. Governments in many cases have also sought to break through the end-to-end encryption provided by messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal to protect user privacy, citing a need to police potentially illegal content.
Telegram sits at the intersection of both of those debates. It allows users to exchange private messages (though its encryption is somewhat weaker than other messengers) while also letting them create public broadcast channels that function more like social networks, albeit with far less content moderation.
“In a lot of use cases around the world, especially where we see the use of Telegram in conflict zones and for broader public messaging, it very much hedges more toward a social media app than a point-to-point communications app,” said Graham Brookie, vice president for technology programs at the Atlantic Council and senior director of the Digital Forensic Research Lab. “Telegram has very intentionally taken a very, very light touch to what the rest of the industry would refer to as trust and safety or content moderation,” he added.
That combination of privacy and lax oversight has made the platform a haven for bad actors, including cyber criminals, drug dealers, and even terrorist groups such as the Islamic State.
France appears to be taking issue with multiple aspects of Telegram’s model, calling out the illegal activity and content available on the platform in its statement on Monday detailing the charges against the “unnamed” person that Durov is being questioned about, which include three charges related to “cryptology” and the provision of encryption services.
But the broad nature of the charges and the lack of detail from the French government leave room for the case to be distorted in the public eye, according to Brookie. “We’re in this dangerous gray area where a lot of projection can be put onto whatever the reason [is] for his apprehension in France,” he said.
Durov’s arrest and the conversation around it could create misconceptions about encryption and hurt activists and dissidents around the world who rely on encrypted messaging for safety, said Mallory Knodel, a researcher at New York University who studies cryptography. “These kinds of violations could happen on any platform … and these alleged crimes are not related to whether the service is encrypted,” she said. “I do worry about this sort of perception of encrypted applications as being a place that enables these kinds of crimes to be committed.”
And despite the proliferation of harmful content on Telegram and what she terms a lack of “duty of care” for vulnerable users on the part of its leadership, Knodel said arresting a technology executive for content shared on their platform sets another dangerous precedent.
“Arresting a CEO is a harsh measure in any country,” she said. “It’s definitely an extreme measure, and it feels like it’s intended to send a message.”

Hudson and Rex S03E01 - Origin Story PART A
I am free! Finally, we made it out of S2. I do like S3 more as a whole.
Ugh, the subtitles are bad. And I'm afraid they'll remain like that for the rest of the season because I checked a random S3 episode and it was like that. Yep, these are the copies I found and uploaded myself. No, I don't have an alternate subtitle source sadly. HDTV rip subtitles are synced differently. Good news is that it's only S3 that seems to be the problem. Anyway, if you need a good laugh, put them on.
On to the episode.
I like the title, first of all. Definitely puts Rex on a superhero status. Every superhero has an origin story.
Did I prefer this to be the start of Hudson and Rex as a show? Yes. Does it make more of an impact when it's the story of how they met and we've watched Charlie and Rex as partners for two seasons? Also yes.
One drawback is that you can't make Diesel really look younger. I mean, theoretically they could cast another dog for this [on Kommissar Rex, there's an entire movie with how Rex started as a pup, and then an almost adult dog (teenage dog? I don't know dog ages but you could tell by his body) and that was a tv movie. I believe that dog later replaced the dog that played Rex]. But I don't know how much that would work or the training and time required.
Tumblr media
Rex with Lindsay.
Aaaand she's dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No, that's so sad already.
Covid episodes. So there's plenty of outdoors scenes.
Rex picking flowers lol
Tumblr media
It might sound ridiculous, but I feel that's a more dynamic haircut than last season's even though it's not that different. The suits have stayed. For now. The tie is trying to escape his body via Newfoundland air.
Tumblr media
Sarah, on the other hand, has done quite the change on her hairstyle. I remember when I saw the episode the first time and I was like, wow, that really suits her, although I never really had a problem with her hairstyle before.
"Thank you for inviting me." "Well, you're a part of the team, it wouldn't feel right to not have you be a part of it." Admit it, you just wanted her there.
Tumblr media
Dude, there's no sunshine. But you look cool, I get it. Small change of hairstyle to denote that this is a flashback lol
Tumblr media
Joe's flashback hair are also different, without the normally visible white above the sideburns, as I remember it. My takeaway from this is that in 3 years' time, Charlie and Rex gave him quite a few grey hair.
Tumblr media
"I'm not letting any of you bastards come close until I see someone trustworthy!"
"I've got four months left running forensics". Subtle way to show that's Sarah's predecessor.
Tumblr media
"What's the dog's name?" "Rex." "Rex. Seriously?" Okay, what's with the name? So it means king, so what? Take one look at that dog and tell me that he's not a king. Also, I am headcanoning that Charlie knows Latin.
Tumblr media
"New entry? Who's that? Seems trustworthy."
"Yeah, I know, we both have our issues to deal with". Yeah, you do.
There's definitely a connection but I think what's different is that Charlie tries to approach Rex as he would approach someone who's in pain, and more than that, someone who would understand what he's saying, and that's what ultimately makes a difference for Rex.
Tumblr media
Charlie: Good boy. Rex: Knock it off, Charlie, we just met.
Tumblr media
I don't care, this is a date.
Nice transition from the house now to the "circus" at the same house three years ago.
Tumblr media
Jesse is geeking out about the digital board. I can't really tell if they did something with Jesse's look.
"I think it's a picture of the kidnapper". It's a literal shadow and you want Jesse to put it up? Are you going to issue an APB on shadows?
Well, that scene where Charlie and Gus are trying to talk over Rex's very loud barks must have been fun to film.
Tumblr media
Charlie doesn't lose his temper often but he's definitely going to when it's about Rex. And we see the start of his "beef" with Renley.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Therefore, regulation suggests that we retire Rex." "Do you mean, put him down?" Look at him, he's already too invested.
Tumblr media
"I'll just sit here and look cute. I find that it often works in my favor."
I think the whole episode is supposed to showcase how Charlie was a bit rougher around the edges. He's easier to lose his temper, he admits to Rex that he also has issues, and it's logical because this dates closer to his divorce than any other episodes we've seen. He's also been off duty god knows for what reason because the Charlie we know is never off duty. My guess is Joe forced him to.
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry that man made you cry. I promise, I'll make him better."
lol Rex eating the paper to show Charlie that he needs food!
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, that was going to be your... lunch? Snack? What the hell is that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Oh, boy, that's high."
Tumblr media
Admiring the view.
Charlie: "Come on, we're going around." Rex: "Oh, no, we're taking the quick way down."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Rex, you're not seriously thinking..." Aaaand he's gone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Charlie, no, you can't do that!" Aaaand he's gone.
I love that Charlie doesn't even know that dogs can swim great but he's supposed to take care of a dog.
Tumblr media
So, who saved who, guys?
Tumblr media
Just came out of the cold river looking fiiiiine.
"You didn't tell me you could swim". This idiot, I swear. Have you not seen one cute "dog swimming video" online? How is that possible?
Tumblr media
"You followed me to the river. You're either dumb or my best friend."
Tumblr media
"I wish you were part of the team back then. You would have saved us from a very chilly swim". So, it's canon that Sarah is smarter than Charlie, right?
Agh. Damn them, they got me again. To be continued in Part B.

How Does a Criminal Defense Attorney Handle Forensic Evidence Disputes?
When facing criminal charges, understanding how a criminal defense attorney approaches forensic evidence disputes can significantly impact the outcome of your case. Forensic evidence, while often viewed as reliable, is not without flaws. A skilled attorney can challenge such evidence effectively, ensuring a fair trial.
Understanding Forensic Evidence
Forensic evidence involves scientific methods to analyze materials collected from a crime scene. Common examples include DNA analysis, fingerprint identification, and digital forensics. Despite its perceived reliability, forensic evidence can be mishandled or misinterpreted, making it essential to scrutinize its validity in court.
Key Strategies for Challenging Forensic Evidence
A criminal defense attorney employs various strategies to evaluate and dispute forensic evidence. Here are some critical areas they focus on:
Reviewing the Evidence: Attorneys thoroughly examine all evidence presented by the prosecution, ensuring it was collected and processed according to established protocols. Any inconsistencies or mishandling can weaken the prosecution’s case.
Examining the Chain of Custody: The chain of custody refers to the documented process of handling evidence from collection to presentation in court. Breaks in this chain, poor documentation, or lapses in security can cast doubt on the evidence’s integrity.
Assessing Collection and Analysis Methods: Forensic evidence must be collected and analyzed appropriately. Defense attorneys consult experts to evaluate the techniques, ensuring they meet legal and scientific standards. If the methods are flawed, the evidence may be challenged as unreliable.
Engaging Forensic Experts: Independent forensic experts can review the evidence and provide alternative interpretations. Their testimony can highlight errors in the prosecution’s case or validate defense arguments, offering juries a fresh perspective.
Addressing Specific Types of Forensic Evidence
Digital Forensics: In an era of advanced technology, digital evidence such as emails, texts, and metadata plays a pivotal role in criminal cases. A defense attorney ensures this evidence is preserved and handled properly, challenging any gaps in its collection or analysis.
DNA and Physical Evidence: DNA evidence, while powerful, is not infallible. Attorneys can question the conditions under which DNA was collected, potential contamination, and the statistical reliability of testing methods.
Crafting an Effective Defense Strategy
A robust defense strategy includes more than just challenging forensic evidence. It involves presenting a compelling narrative that resonates with the jury:
Presenting Alternative Explanations: Defense attorneys may offer plausible scenarios that account for the evidence while maintaining the defendant’s innocence. For instance, they might argue that DNA found at a crime scene was present for unrelated, innocent reasons.
Cross-Examination: Questioning forensic experts during cross-examination can expose weaknesses in their testimony, undermining the prosecution’s case.
Building Alibi Defenses: Establishing an alibi with credible evidence, such as surveillance footage or witness statements, can directly contradict the prosecution’s timeline of events.
Incorporating Forensic Psychology: Forensic psychology examines mental states and the reliability of witness testimonies. This can play a crucial role in cases involving complex psychological factors.
Protecting Your Rights
Navigating the complexities of forensic evidence disputes requires a meticulous and informed approach. A criminal defense attorney serves as an advocate, ensuring that every aspect of the evidence is scrutinized and your rights are upheld throughout the legal process.
