any response to butteredfrogs post?
I did use ai for that image before I knew how shtty ai was and haven't used it since and I apologize.
As for posting text written by chat gpt, I had chatgpt write an idea for a sims 4 expansion pack, similarly to how students use chatgpt for homework and general knowledge, which I don't see a problem with.

And when I thought I couldn't like him more, a new skin is unlocked and here's Unionist Matt telling you, yes YOU, to organize and fight for your rights. ✊

I'm not gonna lie that these photos give me a bittersweet feeling, though. As if it wasn't enough for actors to still be vulnerable to the use of AI by studios even after the strike ended, in January SAG-AFTRA signed a deal with an AI studio to use voice replicas in games, instead of opposing completely to it.
It makes me happy to know he was involved in the strike but at the same time... being stabbed in the back by those who were supposed to protect you is disheartening. Kudos to Remedy for being ethical and respecting the artists they work with, at least.

I've argued before that the current "AI" hype is a bubble replacing the void left by the since-popped crypto bubble but I'm like 30% serious in saying that I think nvidia is one of the main forces driving it because they realized that they couldn't keep selling chips to miners forever

This new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI
"The tool, called Nightshade, is intended as a way to fight back against AI companies that use artists’ work to train their models without the creator’s permission. Using it to “poison” this training data could damage future iterations of image-generating AI models, such as DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, by rendering some of their outputs useless—dogs become cats, cars become cows, and so forth."

I'll tell you, I'm kinda disappinted with the whole chatgpt thing. How it will *probably* die, and how it was either demonized relentlessly or used ruthlessly and thoughtless without moral.
Like, the sheer usefulness of it as a tool with a simple method of use was incredible. No you shouldn't have used it to write your story or essay, but no it wasn't *exclusively* a theft-machine like other ai inventions (such as the ai 'art' generators that are, yeah, just theft machines.)
In this age of Google becoming essentially unusable and thus information being harder to find from unbiased sources (or sometimes getting *any* information at all, because we all know these days that googling shit gets you things unrelated to what you asked for all the time now), chat gpt was so useful as a tool. You can't take what it says at face value because it doesn't know what facts are, but I used it to help invent a couple of words with prompts like "generate several options for the title of a doctor that would medically treat non-human sentient magic creatures. Generate these titles using Latin Root Words." And then I sifted through what it offered me for ideas and pieces. It would have taken me so long to google up various fucking Latin words.
Which is basically what chat got was useful for: quickly skimming information and data from the internet using a shockingly good quality algorithm to actually understand what information and context you *want*. The problem with generative written ai, especially the one fucking Google ai uses, is that they use the ai to *answer the question*, which usually leads to misinformation. Using the ai to fucking filter out the unwanted noise of the internet, and as a tool to gather the information you want, was just... revolutionary to my writing process.
It's unfortunate that people just fucking used that thing to write piss tier whole articles or books. It was a *tool*, not a writer. Neither evil nor good.

No matter whether AI does a good job at what it does or not, rage against the technology isn’t going to solve the labor issues. It isn’t going to stop artists and writers from losing their jobs. Whether it’s able to do the job adequately or not, it will be used to replace that job if all we do is protest against the technology itself. It will similarly do so if we rally around liberal principals like “copyright” and “intellectual property.” Most of the “intellectual property” belongs to conglomerates, not to intellectual laborers. The same if you misrepresent AIs water and energy consumption. None of these will get you anywhere productive, and some of them (“intellectual property”) even show a petty-bourgeoisie outlook.
Of course we should be concerned about small independent artists having their lives be less stable—even if it’s not our chief concern. Whether someone is an artisan proper or has some semi-proletarian characteristics (that is if they are working a side hustle to get by while they work on their passion project) that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take their interests into account, but it does need to come from an industrial proletarian perspective first and foremost. Who will get laid off if AI technology is adopted? Who will lose their income? These are far more primary than independent artists.
The industrial proletariat is the most concentrated and unified force we have. It is this force with which we can fight and win. If we want to fight and win on the subject of AI, it must be fought with the organized industrial proletariat. Unions represent one lower form of this fight. The higher form of this fight is a political leadership that can lead to political reforms and regulations being adopted by the government as concessions, or perhaps even AI and other means of production being seized by the proletariat and regulated and technologically improved by the proletariat.

here's the crux of the ai art issue that everyone is freaking out talking about right now (mostly on instagram)
uploading your art to the internet just like. inherently has these types of risks to it. just like your art being reposted by someone else is always a possibility when you upload, getting your art scraped is always a possibility, and that's just something that is borderline inevitable now. if your art exists online in 2023/2024, it's almost certainly been scraped, there are things you can do to discourage it, but short of not posting at all, its always a possibility
so like. seeing my instagram feed be a bunch of people acting as if it's a new thing rather than just something that was happening without necessarily being disclosed is wild to me, like i thought this was an assumption we were all working under,,,,,,,

Has it been long enough that we can all admit a lot of the backlash we all had to AI art was kneejerk and that we should have fully directed our anger at the shitheads who intended to use it for a quick buck by either selling the results it spits out after typing 'beautiful angel in the style or george rutko with well drawn hands' in the prompt at a markup and call it 'original creative work' or by cutting real human artists out of the equation in commercial settings in favor of having an underpaid intern type prompts into dall-e until they get something good enough they can use as a publishable graphic
#spitblaze says things#the problem#as always#is capitalism#and not the tools and methods at work#ive seen actual artists use AI Art to make beautiful impossible spaces#and lord knows i think its VERY funny to just make up new muppets#and i will admit that ive probably also been going in on this#but i have always drawn the line at formal regulation#look. the first time I saw someone say 'you need to have arguments that wouldnt also throw artists that photomash or musicians that sample#under the bus'#and they're RIGHT#Its very easy to blame the tool. blame the method. blame the dataset#its harder to admit that the issue is that people are trying to undercut your livelihood#and that you're scared and upset by it#and frankly. i am. im scared and upset#and while im pretty sure commerical interest will die down after realizing they cant copyright any of it#its very hard in the now to watch so many people look at what you do and be..#mad at you? because you can do it? and act like this tool makes them equally talented or w/e?#its...weird. and i dont like it. i cant think of a way to put it that doesnt make me sound like a snob#i dont like these people acting like having this tool makes them just as good at MY job#as ME who has beem practicing and honing my skills all my life#i dont like it. it makes me uncomfortable#and like. this is different than people who have no means of making art otherwise#people with physical or mental disabilities that make it unfeasible to pick up a pencil or tablet pwn and just draw#this is about able bodied able minded adults who resent me for having a honed craft#dont like that#idk where im going with this#tech bros suck#capitalists suck
