💌 ⤻ft. THE CEO, THE CHEERLEADER, THE BASEBALL PLAYER, THE ACADEMIC RIVAL
—> how they look in the mirror.
⤻ no content warnings, basically. just how the yanderes look and their favourite feature of themself
notes: i felt a bit lazy this time and decided to make a small post, sorry yall.
🦋 ⤻ archives.
Tumblr media
💌 ⤻ THE CEO, ADRIAN HOUDE.
Many articles have regarded him as the top bachelor, not just because of his money, but because of his looks. A handsome actor or celebrity is easy to come by, but a handsome CEO? It's a bit hard. Just look at all the rest of the CEOs alongside Adrian, who have bald heads.
Unlike them, Adrian has a full head of luscious blonde hair inherited from his grandmother. You know those hairstyles on 1950s men in those posters? Adrian's hairstyle is similar to that, if not just a slight bit more tousled.
His eyes are icy blue. With warmth only present in them when you're around. His eyes are hooded and sharp.
He's clean shaven with no stubble at all, and he wears a bit of makeup to hide the blemishes on his skin. Nothing is more attractive than a man who knows how to look presentable. He likes to wear a chapstick with just a hint of tint, just to make himself pop a bit more. He has a rather pale complexion. His jawline is sharp and strong, and his nose is straight with the base slightly upturned. His lips are slightly downturned, but his eyes are always smiling.
When it comes to smell, he probably wears a very stereotypical cologne of Tom Ford. However, there's always a hint of mint of him.
💌 ⤻ THE CHEERLEADER, KATIE WILLIAMS
Katie is the stereotypical pretty cheerleader, but it's not her looks that draws people in the most — though it certainly helps — is probably her ability to charm and manipulate anyone into doing her bidding.
Katie has really dark skin, and she wears it proudly. Her foundation and concealer is always dewy and bright as opposed to matte.
She loves makeup, looks like the 'cold girl' makeup, paired with some bold eyeshadow. Her eyes are double-lidded and are of a rounder shape with false lashes always on them. Sometimes, it's like she never takes them off. Some of her roommates in her sorority like to make funny rumours about it to tease her.
Her lips are plump, and, like a 2000s girlie, she loves wearing shiny lip gloss and lipstick. She doesn't overline her lips, though. They're big enough.
Her hair is naturally curly and she takes good care of it, like any other part of her appearance. She likes to wear her curly hair in space buns with little pom poms in her scrunchies. She really loves selling that cheerleader look as much as possible.
Her perfume is from Bath and body works, and she likes to experiment with it. She finishes most of her products every two months and will show up to class with a new perfume. Some of the girls in the school like to mirror her perfume too when she gets a new one. She's that popular!
💌 ⤻ THE BASEBALL PLAYER, JESPER HARGREAVES
Jesper is a brunette, and his hair is always tousled and fluffy. Even when it's wet, it has that bit of volume in it. He styles it everyday with a bit of gel but it always gets messy during practice. If you both are close enough in your relationship, he likes when you style it for him.
His skin is slightly tan from hours of playing in the sun but he makes sure to wear sunscreen, especially after finding out from videos that not wearing sunscreen can cause skin damage. He cringes everytime he remembers how he rejected sunscreen, deciding he was too 'macho' for it.
He has rather soft features for a guy. If he had a skinnier body, people would no doubt mistake him for a girl. He has soft rounded eyes with double eyelids, a cute button nose and heart-shaped lips and bushy eyebrows.
When it comes to scent, he's pretty basic about it. Just deodorant is fine with him. He's particular about sunscreen, but when it comes to shampoo and all, he's the type to use a 3-in-1.
💌 ⤻ THE ACADEMIC RIVAL, SEO MIN-JUN
Min-jun looks like your stereotypical Korean boy. Sure, he's basic, but he knows how to style well so he goes from average to god-like. He has permed his hair and gotten it a bit more fluffy and curly, the bangs swooped to the side to compliment his face shape.
His skin is pale and soft from all the skin care products and sunscreen he uses. He has a bit of a bigger nose and mono-lidded eyes — he's a bit insecure about these traits, give him compliments about it to make him feel better — but very pretty lips and a somewhat sharp jaw.
He has black eyes and black hair, but when he's alone, he likes to wear some contacts to play around with it. He does wear contacts on a daily basis though, but they don't add any colour, it's mainly to help with his eyesight because glasses give him a migraine and he can't find any shape that compliments his face well enough. Can you tell he's vain?
For scent, he probably wears a custom perfume made by some shop.

john's movies GOOD?!?!
Homestuck is 1 month old today! Sadly we didn't get an update to celebrate, but there's still so much to puzzle over with Sburb that I'm okay with it. Plus I watched Contact last night, and I'm canceling the narrator for claiming that John likes 'really terrible movies' because this movie kicks so much ass. I don't care if John only likes it because he thinks Matthew McConnaughey is pretty, this rules, I want to stop here and watch this one six more times.
In this movie, we get a cool scientist who's really good at her job and could easily have a successful career, turn away from that to focus on a fringe project searching for aliens, despite constant criticism and loss of funding. Eventually she succeeds, proves that aliens are real like it's no big deal, and is recognized by her work enough to be the first human sent to greet alien life. Only, since she can't prove that she actually met aliens or even left the planet, scientific opinion turns against her once more, despite her certainty that the contact did happen.
Now if we extrapolate this to John and Sburb, we could see a similar arc. He and TT are probably going to have some weird ass experiences playing this game. Something we don't know yet is how the game reacts to non-players - 'You just hope he doesn't notice the MAGIC CHEST on the roof' (p.143) is the only nod we get. What if the environment is only changed for the players, and the changes simply don't exist for Dad? What if they're technically living in different versions of the same house now, and John has to try and prove that TT is actually changing his environment? That could make for a weird story that deals a lot with object interactions, the same way the early pages did.
This movie's primary theme is science vs religion and faith vs proof, and the situations in which those aren't so different. I think we're already seeing this in Homestuck via the chumhandles, with John and TT being connected to science ('biologist' and 'therapist' respectively) while TG and GG are associated with faith ('godhead' and 'gnostic'). Maybe we'll get to see TG and GG play Sburb together and have a completely different gameplay experience to John's with TT, and we'll be able to compare and contrast the ways that they alter their environment.
I know family is a really common theme in movies, so I'm curious. If you randomly selected any five movies from, say, 1985-2000, what are the chances that parent-child relationships would be a driving plot force in all five? How meaningful is it that this keeps reoccurring? And from which Egbert's perspective do we see Ellie's relationship with her dad from? Is this John wishing he was like Ellie, and that his dad encouraged his interests more instead of trying to force clowns and cakes onto him? Or is this Dad trying to let John know that he does support him, that he'll get John movie posters and help him buy memorabilia for his friends and participate in John's love of pranks?
I am going to be so john egbertcoded and get a poster of this movie for my room too.
VIES WATCHED: 5/11
MOST RECENT MOVIE: Contact (1997) - Rating 9/10

Milestone Monday - Earth Day Edition
Tumblr media
Happy Earth Day!
Celebrated annually on April 22nd, Earth Day is an opportunity to support environmental protection and sustainability. The idea of Earth Day was first proposed by peace activist John McConnell (1915-2012) in 1969, but it didn’t fully take shape until Wisconsin senator (and former Wisconsin governor) Gaylord Nelson (1916-2005) initiated a nationwide environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. Today, earthday.org carries the torch promoting international events, sharing educational tools and initiatives.
In observance of the day, we’re sharing an offset print entitled Earth published by Bread & Puppet Theater in 2000.  This broadside was printed from masonite cuts created by Bread & Puppet Theater founder Peter Schumann (b.1934). Primarily known for their puppet shows, Bread & Puppet also operates a press that helps support the nonprofit through the sale of posters and publications, many of which can be found within our holdings!

Question for y'all!
If you're wondering what I mean, a mouthful to get the idea to you:
These are selected/Utena specific scans of the Newtype Magazine special issue addendum, '15th Memorial Book,' packaged with the April 2000 magazine. Utena appears in a few spots, as well as Utena alumni like Yoji Enokido! These Memorial Books are literally celebrations of the magazine's work, a strangely masturbatory process that nevertheless kinda makes sense for an era before internet was how this stuff mostly got conveyed. A rich secondhand market existed, and this was a way to get people filling out their collections, I suppose. As usual, no idea what any of this says, just that I think it's neato as a larger archival process, and I'm just trying to find the best place for it, or the best chance to get an audience. Obviously it will all go on the site, but the how and where I haven't worked out just yet. I'm just not sure if there's an audience for this stuff here. Checking!
PS yes that's Schell Bullet and yes I have it.

The new Nazis and the coming genocide they are planning
Tumblr media
April 29, 2024 3:37 pm Robert Zimmerman
Unless you have been badly educated at one of the so-called elite universities in the United States, Great Britain, or Europe, the genocidal goals of the terrorist organization of Hamas in Gaza are as plain as day.
These murderous thugs not only admire Hitler and wish to finish his effort to wipe out all Jews, they demonstrated that blatant evil goal on October 7, 2024, killing more than a thousand men, women, and children, torturing and raping many women and children in the process. Hamas’ victims that day had committed only one crime: being Jewish and living near Gaza. Many were from the leftwing secular Israeli community, and had worked hard to build good will ties with many in Gaza. The Gazans, working for Hamas, used those ties to gather intelligence that was then used to murder these Jews.
Soon after the massacre, Hamas officials went on television to celebrate these vicious murders. Ghazi Hamad of the Hamas Political Bureau proudly said said that the slaughter on October 7th “is just the first time, and there will be a second, a third, a fourth.” When asked if his position called for the anniliation of Israel, he immediately answered “Yes, of course,” adding “No one should blame us for the things we do, on October 7, October 10, October million, everything we do is justified.”
So what does these goals tell us about the hoards of protesters now swarming on many of these same college campuses, screaming things like “Globalize the Intifa!” and “Kill the Zionists!”? The picture above tells us all we need to know. On October 7th Hamas not only killed more than a thousand, it kidnapped more than two hundred more to hold as hostages, many of whom were little childen and babies. When supporters of Israel began putting up these posters showing the actual hostages held and demanding their release, supporters of Hamas in America and elsewhere would routinely go around ripping those posters down. In the case of the poster above put up in London, they did worse, actually drawing Hilter mustaches on the faces of the babies.
Tumblr media
On campuses now, these student protesters are daily telling us where they stand. They support Hamas unequivocally, and want it to survive to kill Jews. Like the Nazis in Germany, they work to harass and persecute any American Jews who happen to stroll by, sometimes acting to block their access to the university. In some cases they attack them violently.
At Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for example these pro-Hamas protesters painted red hands on a tree, a symbol used in a pogrom in Iran in 1941 to identify Jewish homes for the purpose of slaughtering them. Later, after two Israelis were lynched in Ramallah in the West Bank in 2000, one of the killers — after dismembering their bodies — proudly waved his bloody hands to the cheering crowd. Every Jew worldwide knows what that red hand symbol means: We want to kill you, and are eager to do it.
Now American student protesters are using that symbol, claiming that Israel is doing the same in Gaza, when even most shallow research of Israel’s actual war effort in Gaza will tell you it is doing everything it can to minimize civilian deaths. To accuse Israel of genocide here is to accuse it of the typical blood libel that anti-Semites have been using against Jews for centuries.
Meanwhile, these protesters take over campuses and buildings illegally, and then refuse to leave. Even after they are forcibly removed, with some arrested, they quickly and defiantly return (see the stories here and here for just two examples). Like Hamas, they make demands, and if their demands are not met, they use mob action to commit violence to get what they want. In their goals, their propaganda lies, and their actions they are identical in every way with the tactics of the 1930s Nazis.
Pay very close attention to the leaders of these protests. Many are soon going to become major players in the Democratic Party, which is closely tied to these pro-Hamas riots and clearly want them to continue. For example, Columbia University’s board of trustees has apparently acted to tie the hands of the university’s president to prevent any tough action to stop the occupancy of the campus. Instead of condemning this support for Hamas and the illegal mob take-over, they have kept silent. And when you take a close look at political alliances of the majority of that board, the reason becomes evident.
Among those trusted with governing the Ivy League college are a billionaire from the prominent Pritzker family; a hedge-funder who has donated well over $4 million to Democratic causes, including $775,000 just this election cycle; President Barack Obama’s former homeland security secretary, and a federal judge appointed to the bench by President Bill Clinton. “It’s no surprise that the board of trustees for a university allowing woke left-wing ideology and antisemitism to fester is made up of Democrat operatives and donors,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) said. At least six of the board’s 21 trustees have direct ties to the Democratic Party, according to an investigation by The Post, which examined voter registration and political donation records as well as other public documents.
These new Nazis are clearly the future of the Democratic Party. It is the kind of leadership the present party power-brokers want. Worse, the Democratic Party rank and file want such leadership as well. Only two days ago in a Democratic Party primary in Pennsylvania, congresswoman Summer Lee, a proud member of the radical, Marxist, pro-Hamas “squad”, defeated a challenge from more moderate local Democrat. Moreover, Lee won handily, with about 60% of the vote.
Will this be enough to get Americans to vote against this increasingly bigoted, anti-Semitic, and Marxist Democratic Party? Not likely. The Democrats are unified in favor of this new Nazi movement, while many Republican voters seem glad to sit on their hands like petulant toddlers and not vote, because the Republican Party doesn’t give them what the want, every time.
I must emphasize that I am not talking about the presidential election. These same non-voters — whom I like to call this generation’s version of “the good Germans” in the 1930s — won’t vote in local elections either, thus giving power to the Democrats from the top to the bottom.
This is how Hitler gained power. And it is how the next Hitler, likely hidden among the leaders of those pro-Hamas protests, will gain power in the coming decade. And when that happens, say good-by to the Constitution, to the Bill of Rights, and say hello to a new Holocaust.

Kaiju Week in Review (November 20-26, 2022)
Tumblr media
Megumi Odaka, best known as psychic Miki Saegusa from the Heisei Godzilla series, retired from acting in 2000 due to health issues and disappeared from the public eye for a decade. The narration she contributed to Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex was her first role since then, and she's finally ready to go back in front of the camera. 3Y Film (The Great Buddha Arrival, Nezura 1964) has a new kaiju movie in the works, Hoshi 35, which Odaka is set to star in. Since it's a 3Y joint, and part of a celebration of the 35 years since her acting debut, expect it to get meta. As usual, Hiroko Yokokawa is directing; another key player is Daisuke Sato (Howl from Beyond the Fog), who will serve as director of special effects, cinematographer, and suitmaker (with Tomoya Ayaki).
3Y productions are known for bringing back veteran kaiju actors, and Hoshi 35 has already cast several besides Odaka, this time focusing on the Heisei era instead of the Showa era. Jun Hashizume played MOGUERA pilot Koji Shindo in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Kojiro Inaba in Ultraman Z, Daijiro Harada was Mechagodzilla captain Takuya Sasaki in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Akira Ohashi stepped inside Gamera in Gamera 2, Iris in Gamera 3, and King Ghidorah in GMK. He'll be playing another monster in this one, Hoshikuzu. Hiroshi Miyasaka and Yumiko Tanaka will appear as well.
No plot details are currently known. The film is aiming for a October 2023 release date.
Tumblr media
Gridman Universe, the crossover film for SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYANZENON, has a new pair of posters and a teaser trailer. It'll hit theaters in Japan on March 24 (and hopefully arrive in the West before the year is out). Excessive fanservice aside, I really enjoyed GRIDMAN, but haven't gotten around to DYNAZENON yet... it aired in Spring 2021, which was a pretty chaotic time to be a Wikizilla editor, and I think I was under the impression it was all mecha, no kaiju. Guess I have to now!
Tumblr media
Veteran Ultra Series director Takeshi Yagi debuted a proof-of-concept short at Tokyo Comic Con called AKARI, which you can also watch online. The story is simple—a giant heroine (Akari) battles a rampaging cyborg kaiju (Pythagodon) in a futuristic, neon city—but Yagi and company have far greater ambitions for it. They created it as part of a course on tokusatsu techniques, and hope to turn it into a feature or series with the funds from that course, as well as other crowdfunding efforts. The story they've drawn up is pretty intriguing: a 2076 Japan where corporations run amok, the AI uprising is at hand, and an alien race who survived their own rogue AI empowers a woman to save the Earth.
Matt Frank designed Akari. Akihiko Iguchi (Mechagodzilla, King Caesar, Titanosaurus) came up with Pythagodon, and boy, you can tell. I hope we haven't seen the last of them.
Tumblr media
One more kaiju short for you to watch: Ivalla the Land Mine Monster: Case of Extra. This one is in more dire need of subtitles to get the full experience, but there's still a quality rampage to witness. From the other videos on the channel, Yuki Kurosu has been working on this for 8 years—props for persevering!
youtube
Godziban squeezed another episode out of Godzilla Festival 2022, this one focusing on the puppet displays and demonstrations at the event and the upcoming Blu-ray-only episodes which will see Bagan make his debut and many others battling it out.
youtube
Kadokawa released a fine video tribute to Gamera for his 57th birthday, which naturally ends by teasing the Netflix project. Interesting that they skipped over the 2015 short though.
Tumblr media
Your reading assignment for the week is Patrick Galvan's excellent tribute to Kazuki Omori for Toho Kingdom, a well-researched overview of his career and analysis of the two Godzilla films he directed.

I feel sad for the model but is anyone really surprised that an organization in a city that is synonymous with sexually exploiting women saw nothing wrong with a woman with self-harm scars in the first place?
A digital poster created by Pride Amsterdam is sparking backlash for featuring a trans-identified female model with a significant amount of of self-mutilation scars on her arms.
Photos of the advertisement began circulating on social media last week, showing a digital information stand in the iconic libertine city displaying the poster, which was part of the “My Gender, My Pride” campaign.
The campaign was launched as part of the wider Pride parade celebrations held annually from July 30 to August 7, which often take on a different theme every year.
Jason Bhugwandass, the subject of the digital poster, is one of 10 Ambassadors selected by Pride Amsterdam to represent the theme of the campaign. In the photo, Bhugwandass appears topless, displaying ‘gender affirming’ mastectomy scars and a stuffed dog perched on her shoulder.
But it was the trail of jagged self-harm marks from wrist-to-shoulder that sparked the most concern.
Tumblr media
The digital poster invites passersby to scan a QR code and watch a video created by Pride Amsterdam featuring an interview with Bhugwandass. In the video, Bhugwandass explains she takes a stuffed dog with her everywhere she goes in order to self-soothe.
Bhugwandass, 23, had been featured in a documentary released at the Netherlands International Documentary Film Festival in 2021. The hour-long film, titled ‘Jason,’ revealed Bhugwandass had been the victim of extreme domestic violence as a child. A profile on Bhugwandass published in RTL Niews in January adds that Bhugwandass was also abused by “multiple neighbors” throughout her youth.
At age 16, Bhugwandass was diagnosed with PTSD and housed in five locked youth treatment facilities over the course of one year due to repeated suicide attempts and depression. While in the facilities, Bhugwandass was often placed in solitary confinement, and experienced additional emotional trauma.
While the image of the billboard was circulated by many accounts, it wracked up mass attention after popular British feminist influencer Aja posted it to her Twitter on July 28.
“A woman who clearly spent years engaging in self-harm on her arms is now being celebrated because she has moved her self harming on to her chest,” Aja wrote, “This [message] is extremely dangerous.. its Pro-Ana the 2022 version.”
Pro-Ana, a shortened version of “pro-anorexia,” is a reference to an online subculture popularized by Tumblr which glorified eating disorders and self-harm. The subculture gained notoriety in the mid-2000s, where young girls flocked to post and circulate “thinspiration” on their blogs in an attempt to encourage each other to take on fad-diets and shed as much weight as possible.
Aja’s tweet wracked up almost 5,000 ‘likes’ as of this article’s writing, and over 450 primarily furious replies to the post were logged from feminists and those who have survived self-harm.
“I honestly cannot believe this exists,” user @stemfemm wrote in response to Aja, “The self-inflicted scars and the top surgery scars are one in the same. Self hatred and self loathing, now used to market trendy plastic surgeries to help you run further from yourself.”

This is not the firm time a trans-identified female has been used to advertise the benefits of ‘gender affirming’ surgeries while also appearing to have engaged in significant amount of self-harm prior to the procedure.
In December of 2021, an image from infamous gender surgeon Dr. Sidhbh Gallagher began to circulate on social media, showing an image of one of her clients she had posted to Facebook.
The female who had been given a double-mastectomy was similarly sporting a disturbing number of self-harm scars on her stomach and arms.

The outrage regarding the Pride Amsterdam billboard came just one day after England’s National Health Service announced that the country’s only pediatric gender identity clinic would be closing its doors. The news followed a damning investigation into the Tavistock’s Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) that was released in March of this year.
The review was the result of multiple whistleblowers coming forward with concerns about the clinic and its minor patients. Some said they felt Tavistock was engaging in gay conversion therapy for pursuing heavy-handed gender-based solutions, as well as often ignoring co-morbidities in young patients — such as autism or mental health concerns.
Of note, the review’s interim report pointed to a 2011 study which found that up to 10% of young people being referred for gender identity services in the Netherlands were on the autism spectrum.

@yugiohio #op youre in good company as most people interpret this film as a queer coming of age film. myself included.#i saw it for the first time in my early teens and it impacted me in a way i have never been able to articulate.#ive reserved it from the library so many times. i have the movie downloaded to my computer. i made myself posters.#im still trying to find the dvd. im still trying to find the novel and manga. i love these girls and the way they love each other so much.#anywayyyyy you didnt ask for any of this but this movie is just so important to me and I'm so so so happy youve discovered it#and that youre posting content from it
hope it's okay to put this here, if not will edit the post, buuuut i usually do a little post-movie decompression and your tags are a great place to start it:
i have had this on my letterboxd to watch for awhile, and was tipped over the edge when the director of a play im in said "so there's a biker gang and one of the girls is obsessed with rococo" i cannot tell you what about that description charmed me so much i had to watch it immediately, but hey, sometimes you know that It's Time
i was kind of expecting a really serious film, and it turned out much more like a sweet queer romcom of that early 2000s lesbian flavour (meaning that most of them don't end up more than subtext, but the text in this one is... very text. they pretend they're about to kiss in the end-credits sequence type text)
was fun to accidentally land on another film that's about Style and Taste and The Soundtrack Being Cool, because i watched empire records and then young soul rebels these last couple of days, so clearly that's the theme of this little unexpected watching time
but seriously this film is really Cool, first and foremost, and it's got a fascinating set of philosophies in it about style (especially clothes) that surprised me, because you don't get a lot of cinema celebrating style without at least giving a cautionary "but watch out lest you become Shallow!" i really enjoyed that the arc of this one was "actually i am great at making clothes and im really capable actually, but i'd much rather buy clothes and look pretty in order to be a true rococo woman! the most important thing is dedication to Style! (and ichigo)"
like, her ethos really is high femme camp -- she's there to look beautiful and she enjoys that and she does it on her own terms, and specifically the only person she enjoys making for is... ichigo
and consequently, while she absolutely dresses for herself, there is also a sense that the only person whose opinion she values is also ichigo, and ichigo treats her exactly how she wants to be treated -- when momoko faints, she runs to her and cradles her head, she takes her out on her bike at the end, she's the strong badass to momoko's sweet prettiness
but then in another fun subversion, momoko is the one constantly looking out for ichigo -- she has the clothes she needs (and sells them for cheap), she embroiders her jacket after going a full day on a search for a person we later find out doesn't exist, she wins all the money, she comes for her when ichigo is in danger of getting seriously hurt and saves her, she gets offered a job based on her competencies that later on gives ichigo an opportunity (ironically to look pretty, which... she really really is beautiful) (although they both turn them down after getting a taste of it, they'd much rather roll around on a bike together). ichigo says at the end that she'll simply never be out of her debt, and that makes momoko smile, like yeah, that means they'll have to stay together forever
idk this movie is just so Cool and so Fun and soooo so gay
i also note that the single mild no-homo is so immaterial that watching it i wasn't actually sure if it wasn't about akimi, who was introduced as this beautiful vision that changed ichigo's life back in the day and now it turns out that not only is she engaged to this man, she's pregnant and leaving the gang, shifting ichigo's whole axis -- the framing is on her, she was introduced with the In Love/Lesbian Awakening Gaze, she's the reason ichigo is who she is, and the catalyst for why ichigo eventually leaves the gang (the other catalyst being momoko + the slightly less focused-on one of "not liking the direction it's going in"). it's got such a "im a teenager and upset about this but i cannot say why, it must be because im in love with this guy i barely know and because uh... i don't respect the new leader's vision!"
i think this film also carries a certain kind of vibe that reminds me of streets of fire, that is, in some ways it feels much more like a myth or a fairytale, because everything is so extravagant and yet slightly vague (and i mean that positively). we're being introduced to the origins of a myth of these two people who travel the roads in cool clothes and set biker gangs right, like. Urgh it's so Cool!
and the animation i didnt even mention the animation but it's got Cool Animation too!!!!
it's funny, i tend to land hard on the "gets obsessed with more masc characters" (wow wonder why) but in this one -- while of course they're both great and that's the point -- i was absolutely enamoured with momoko. her casual cynicism, her confusion about why she suddenly cares about one (1) person, her absolute dedication to The Vibe that is her whole being, her seemingly being completely unaware of just how easily she can draw people to her. just, the Power that is momoko (and now she's got the muscle of ichigo, nothing can stop them)

sometimes they don’t come even if you build it
I just saw one of those fandom positivity posts that encourages people to be positive as a way of attracting other people to their blorbo/pairing/show. “If there isn’t enough fic for your fave or OTP, just create it yourself and be excited and people will join you!” And there’s some truth to that. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, and being publicly bitter about nobody liking your fave is not likely to get people to like either you or your fave. Staying positive and focusing on creating and boosting content for your fave is, at the very least, likely to make you happier than focusing on the negatives will, even if you don’t attract any new fans. I agree with all of that.
But the thing is, posts like this have been going around fandom since I started seriously participating in the early 2000s, and they are at best incomplete. I never see them acknowledge that this doesn’t work for all characters/pairings and it works disproportionately for the type of characters that fandom already loves and celebrates. It’s been used to silence people trying to discuss racial and gender bias in fandom. And it never takes into account the fact that quite often the people who are being addressed--the people who complain about their ship not being popular, or whatever--have already been doing the very thing the poster advocates. They have been making content, they have been celebrating their fave, they have been encouraging anyone with even a transitory interest in their fave ... and none of it has made a difference.
After years of work and trying to “be the change” and “build it” so “people will come” nothing has changed. They’re still just as alone as when they started. Maybe now there are a couple of people who will include their fave as a secondary character in a fic focused on other characters, who would otherwise not have included their fave, and that’s good. But it’s not the same as having a community of people, and while it’s better to write fic yourself than to have nothing you want to read, it’s still not the same as being a member of a creative community.
This isn’t always the case. I have seen people single-handedly create large and thriving fan communities around their blorbos. I have seen people write a couple of fic that acted as lightning rods and all of a sudden there were lots of people talking about that character or pairing or fandom. (This is most common when the fan creator manages to capture the attention of Migratory Slash Fandom.) But it’s not even close to universally true. I have also seen multiple examples of talented creators spending years turning out a ton of top-tier content for their blorbo or OTP and got nobody else interested in creating for that character or pairing at all. Lots of people would stop by, read their fic, some would comment with really nice comments. But they wouldn’t create anything for the character or pairing. It remained just as tiny as it ever had been.
In my experience, one person getting Super Excited About A Character/Pairing and creating content and encouraging others to do the same is most likely to work if the characters/pairings involved belong to the types of archetypes that fandom already loves. So, for example, a white male slash pairing that starts off rare is a lot more likely to grow than a female slash pairing featuring characters of color. A female secondary character who is straightforward and fights a lot or otherwise does a lot of “awesome” things is a lot more likely to get a growing audience than a female secondary character who is complex and less of a badass. And this is true regardless of how much love and effort their fans put in. Sometimes it works! ... a lot of the time it doesn’t. And it is more likely to work with white characters than characters of color, and it’s more likely to work with men than women, and it’s more likely to work with characters who fit the archetypes that are already popular. (Which means that the people who love that archetype probably also have other fandoms with similar characters/pairings with lots of fanworks that they can participate in even if their fave never gets big.)
So, yeah, trying to guilt and shame people is not going to work, it’s only going to make fandom less pleasant for everyone including you. Talking about how “nobody loves X” or “people should love X more!” are unhelpful at best. And I encourage everyone to create fanworks about their faves, and that’s even more true when you’re in a tiny corner of fandom with few (or no) others. It may work to attract people to your fave, and even if it doesn’t, creating something new is always good.
However.
For fans who don’t love the sort of characters and pairings that tend to get big, who have spent years writing fic and creating art and encouraging anybody who shows half an interest in their blorbo or OTP and been loud and passionate in just the way people recommend and are still the lone fan.
Posts about “just be positive!” and “create stuff! if you build it they will come!” are. um. a bit patronizing and demoralizing.
Not to mention, acknowledging this disparity and analyzing it is necessary to discuss things like fandom’s racial bias, and other biases.
